  2. 2. Teaching and training Teaching and training may be thought of as the same thing, but they, in fact, have many differences. While they are both appropriate in certain circumstances, sometimes the presence of one may be to the detriment of the other. “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn”, Benjamin Franklin
  3. 3. Definitions Teaching Training Teaching: "to cause to know something, to guide the studies of, to impart knowledge or to instruct by example, precept or experience.” Training seeks “to form by instruction, discipline or drill” or “to make prepared for a test or skill.” Teaching: ‘To cause to know something’, ‘to guide the studies of’, ‘to impart the knowledge of’, ‘to instruct by precept, example, or experience’. Training: ‘To form by instruction, discipline, or drill’, ‘to make prepared for a test of skill’. Teaching is mostly theoretically oriented Training is practical oriented.
  4. 4. Definitions Teaching Training Teaching provides new knowledge to the people Training helps the already knowledgeable people to learn the tools and techniques to apply the same. Teaching fills mind Training shapes habits. Teaching lays stress on education, knowledge and wisdom with a longer time span. Training lays stress on skills and abilities with a shorter time span Teaching gives extensive domains with limited knowledge in general. Training gives intensive information about a limited domain
  5. 5. Definitions Teaching Training Teaching provides breadth of knowledge in all spheres. Training provides depth of knowledge in a specific sphere Teaching makes Jack-of-all- trades. Training makes a Master of a trade Teaching is, in general, a broader area. Training is for a specific area Teacher provides information, knowledge, experience Trainer facilitates learning. Teacher usually creates the ‘need to know’ the knowledge for students Training, the student himself approaches for the knowledge as he realizes the need to know.
  6. 6. Definitions Teaching Training In this context, H. Clay Trumbull , rightly quoted, “It has been said that the essence of teaching is causing another to know. It may similarly be said that the essence of training is causing another to do.” Teaching may relate to the subject area. Training may relate to functional area. Teaching usually refers to classroom learning. Training refers workshops, seminars involving various games, role-plays, simulation methods etc.
  7. 7. Characteristics of Training Focusing on training, as well, makes the students more confident and competent and helps them to get employment opportunities. Training equips mindset, tools set and skills set. Training is always an active area where there will be interaction, questioning, learning by doing, role-plays, team games and practical activities. Although training is subset of teaching it does have lot of impact in equipping the participants with novel tools and techniques to become competent at the job front.
  8. 8. Training helps in uncorking the hidden talents among the people, which until then not realized apart from making the people highly creative and competent. Training usually has a more specific focus than teaching, which seeks to instill a deeper knowledge over a longer period of time. Training, on the other hand, seeks to help people master a specific skill, or skill set, until they are able to execute it efficiently. Training is usually a one-time or short-term event, as with job training. Training is subset of teaching.
  9. 9. Relationship between Teaching and Training Teaching and training are supplementary to reach other There are times when teaching and training must work in tandem. For the activities which require both cognitive and psychomotor domains of knowledge both teaching and training are required
  10. 10. Interference of Teaching and Training At times teaching can interfere with training and vice versa Instead of providing complete knowledge if the child is provided training in attempting a few questions If in subjects/ aspects where practical knowledge is also required along with theoretical knowledge emphasis is provided to theoretical knowledge only
  11. 11. Balancing the teaching and training Skill training is essential along with academic or theoretical knowledge Training will always be enriched when a deeper, longer-term knowledge is continually sought and acquired. Cognitive knowledge has its own limits and benefits so are that of psychomotor domains also Both are complementary to each other with each cater to different domains of knowledge At times we need both of these to varying extent
