2. Conforming to conventions by placing
the barcode and Issue Number at the
bottom right side of the page.
Challenging conventions by having a
main image and no other image on the
front cover as it is common for rock
magazines to have numerous pictures on
the front cover to attract attention.
Following conventions by using celebrity
endorsement on the front cover by using
a ‘celebrity’ on the front cover to attract
fans of the celebrity towards the
magazine.
Following conventions as the model on the
front cover is giving a direct mode of
address to the reader to grasp their
attention.
Developing/Challenging conventions by
advertising the brands social media
pages on the front cover rather then
elsewhere in the magazine. As well as
this giving an image of the logo’s of the
social media pages so they’re easily
recognisable and give familiarity to the
reader even if it’s a new magazine.
Conforming to conventions by using
a large, bold masthead centred at
the top of the front cover in order to
create branding and attract the
readers attention.
Following/developing conventions by using a
freebie to appeal to a teenage audience as
the word ‘free’ would better convince them
to buy the magazine. As well as this the word
‘FREE’ has a different colour theme to the
rest of the magazine to better catch the
readers attention.
Following conventions by using multiple eye-
catching coverlines to show the reader what’s
in the magazine and entice them more into
buying it. As well as using a main cover line
bigger then the other that ties in with the
main image.
Following conventions by using a colour
scheme that suits the genre as red ties in with
rebelliousness and passion tying in with the
rock genre. I also develop conventions by
using black to tie in with the pun in the
masthead as ‘Ragnarok’ is the end of the
world and ‘Ragnarock’ is a pun on that. Black
symbolises death which ties in with the
Armageddon theme.
3. Conforming to conventions by using a
consistent colour theme throughout the
magazine which ties into the genre of the
magazine.
Following conventions by still placing
The masthead at the top of the page
However I made it smaller so that it
doesn’t take too much of the readers
attention away but it’s still there to
show the branding.
Conforming to conventions by
featuring an editors note on the
contents page to form a connection
between the reader and the editor.
Challenging conventions by not using
a main image on the contents page
and instead using multiple images
that preview the magazine better and
show the reader what’s on specific
pages.
For the contents itself I challenged and
developed conventions. The contents
pages for rock magazines are normally a
lot more unorganized and flashy to catch
the readers attention, however for my
magazine I used a less common style in
rock magazines and made it more
organized as the contents page’s main
purpose is to help the reader navigate
through the magazine.
4. Conforming to conventions
by using the masthead in
the double page spread like
I did with the other pages to
remind the reader of the
brand.
I also conformed to
conventions by using a large
main image covering the
entirety of 1 of the pages
used for the double page
spread. This draws attention
to the reader and uses
celebrity endorsement as
the entire article on the
right page is about this
artist.
Another way that I followed conventions was
by writing the page numbers at the bottom of
the page so it’s easier for the reader to find
the pages from the contents page.
Followed typical conventions by inserting a
by line at the bottom of the page.
Normally this isn’t where a by-line is
placed however it is the norm to have one.
Adding the news segment was another way that I
conformed to normal conventions of a music magazine. By
doing this it self promotes the branding of ‘Ragnarock’ as it
attracts the reader towards the website of the brand.
Conventional headline used to
attract the reader to the story,
however I broke conventions by
not using a grab quote below the
headline or elsewhere on the
double page spread.
Followed conventions by using
a drop cap at the start of the
article.
I followed conventions by
using a standfirst before the
Q.A section of the article
begins to give the reader a
better idea of the article.
Finally I conformed to normal
conventions by using
crossheads to separate the
questions from the answers
and developed this by
changing the colour of the
questions to further separate
them from the answers.
