Marrero Case Study
Boundaries and Demographics
Marrero is a small city located in southeastern Louisiana and located roughly fifteen miles outside of New Orleans. It is part of Jefferson Parish,
which encompasses smaller cities just like it and its wedged between the two cities Westwego and Harvey. According to the 2010 census, Marrero had
a population of 33,141. This number has most likely increased significantly since the latest census results (United States Census Bureau, n.d.). The
predominant age group in city's population is between the ages of forty–five and forty–nine with females making up the majority of the population.

Sidewalks line all the roads in Marrero are in adequate condition, but there are no bike lanes increasing the probability of accidents occurring between
both parties. All housing units in Marrero have specific green trash carts that are dumped only onTuesdays and Fridays. Driving around the area I
haven't seen one home with a blue recycle bin, which could pose increased levels of pollutants in the environment. Jefferson Sanitary landfill is located
about eighteen miles away in Waggaman, Louisiana (Jefferson Parish, n.d.)
Education and Services There is eighteen primary and primary and secondary school in Marrero, twelve are public schools and six are private
Catholic schools. The Jefferson Parish Public School System obtain a letter grade of a B for increasing its district's performance score for the
2014–2015 school year. Sadly, the majority of the public schools in Marrero received a grade of a C or D. There are three parks in Marrero; Estelle,
Pard, and Kings Grant all of which provide sports such football, basketball, baseball, volleyball all year round for both adolescents and teens to
participate in.

Essay on Salem Witch Trial Theories
Brennyn Mackey

The Secret War of Salem
Exposing the Culprit behind the Mass Hysteria
The Salem Witch Trials were a series of infamous events that demand an explanation for their occurrence. The trials that took place in 1692 caused
neighbors in the community of Salem Village in the colony of Massachusetts to turn on one another out of paranoia, accusing one another of witchcraft.
According to Carol Karlsen, a longtime author of the subject, nineteen people were hanged and about 200 others were imprisoned (40). A few theories
have been offered in order to explain the root of this mass hysteria. The theories in question need to be examined to see which holds the most credibility.
Most historians who have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to their research:
Ergot poisoning in individuals with adequate vitamin A intakes leads to gangrenous rather than convulsive symptoms. Vitamin A is found both in fish
and in dairy products. Salem Village was a farming community and Salem Town, which bordered the village, was a well–known seaport; cows and fish
were plentiful. There is no evidence to suggest a vitamin A deficiency in the diet of the inhabitants, and it would be particularly unlikely for the
so–called "afflicted girls," some of whom came from well–to–do farming families. The absence of any instance of gangrenous symptomatology makes
it highly unlikely that ergot played any role in the Salem crisis (Spanos).
The theory that there was an ergot infestation does not seem to hold up to the accounts of Spanos and Gottlieb. The theory of ergot infestation has
slowly lost credibility due to these pieces of evidence.
Another theory that attempts to explain the paranoia is the theory that witchcraft was being practiced in the community. The word "witch" came into
English from Wicca, an Anglo–Saxon word that means "wise one" (Buckland 26). Witches have been viewed throughout history as servants of Satan,
spreading misfortune. This is an exaggerated stereotype similar to the misconception that witches fly around on broomsticks and transform into

St. Louis And New Orleans
Kate Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty on February 8, 1851, in St. Louis, Missouri, into a socially prominent family with roots in the French
past of both St. Louis and New Orleans. Her father, Thomas O'Flaherty, an immigrant from Ireland, had lived in New York and Illinois before settling
in St. Louis, where he prospered as the owner of a commission house. In 1839, he married into a well–known Creole family, members of the city's
social elite, but his wife died in childbirth only a year later. In 1844, he married Eliza Faris, merely fifteen years old but, according to French custom,
eligible for marriage. Faris was the daughter of a Huguenot man who had migrated from Virginia and a woman who was descended from the
Charlevilles, among the earliest French settlers in America.
Kate was one of three children born to her parents and the only one to live to mature years. In 1855, tragedy struck the O'Flaherty family when her
father, now a director of the Pacific Railroad, was killed in a train wreck; thereafter, Kate lived in a house of many widows – her mother, grandmother,
and great–grandmother Charleville. In 1860, she entered the St. Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic institution where French history,
language, and culture were stressed – as they were, also, in her own household. Such an early absorption in French culture would eventually influence
Chopin's own writing, an adaptation in some ways of French forms to American themes.
Chopin graduated from the

Benedict Arnold Traitor Or Traitor
In the Revolutionary War, there were many different influencers that affected the course of the War. Both the American Colonies and the British had
brave and noble heroes. Yet there was one man who became a traitor and disliked by both sides in his lifetime. Benedict Arnold was an egotistical,
bold man who managed to find himself without anywhere to run do despise, or perhaps more because of, his actions and behavior during the
Revolution. Benedict Arnold had always been devilish, even from a young age. As a child he was known to cause trouble and harm. Rumor has it that
some of his "earliest amusements" included robbing birds' nests and sprinkling broken glass on the path to school where other children would cut their
feet. He remained... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When he got back to the colonies General Washington promoted him to the rank of a brigadier general. Arnold went on to fight in many battles,
most of them becoming a win. His rash courage and impatient energy helped him be remarkably successful on the battle field, but it also was the
cause of severe losses in his troops. Several officers disapproved of him, but Washington's personal efforts kept him from becoming resigned. As a
brigadier general he fought heroically at the Battle of Saratoga until his leg was, again, severely wounded. This time the injury caused a chronic,
and severe, limp that he had for the rest of his life. Unable to continue on field, he was restored to a proper relative rank, where General
Washington placed Arnold in command of a Philadelphia base. Although he remained bold his whole life, he used his attributes to help contribute
to the Revolution. Despite how supportive he was for the first part of his life, Benedict Arnold is most famous for betraying the Revolution and the
Colonies. Once Arnold dropped ranks and was forced to stay off the field, he became restless and aggravated. He had always been called by the life
of luxury, and felt as if he deserved a higher title for all of his efforts in the war. Deciding to turn to the British, Arnold needed a post from which he
could do the most service to their cause. He requested and received the command of the American

Who Is Benedict Arnold A Traitor
Desiring recognition and the feeling of pride brings a fullness in life so if you were to not being given the proper recognition, if you were utterly
ignored, if you were tossed aside and others received credit for your very own work, is if you were faced to choose between taking the high road
and becoming a better human being or would you act out in vengeance? Benedict Arnold's historical acclaim is often associated with the traitor
activity, by examining the experiences with Arnold, Americans are able to appreciate his leadership prior to his betrayal; his character is really
revealed through his past and all that he accomplished for his beloved country. Benedict Arnold sacrificed a lot for the greater good of the American
people. Arnold is not given recognition for all of the victories that he had been involved in and at a time during a promotion he gets passed up by low
ranking, less talented, less dedicated men than himself. "Major General Horatio Gates took credit for the victory. As if that weren't enough of an insult,
Congress had promoted five officers–all Arnold's juniors and most far less talented–over him. Even back then politics was part of the equation as
Congress ignored Washington's consistent backing and praise for Arnold, whom he admired as a fierce soldier." (Beck 105). Also, "Benedict Arnold
was a hero before he turned traitor. And just how he turned is a complicated story. Arnold made his name in upstate New York, fighting for control of a

Cell Phones And Their Effects On Children
They have come in and taken over our society, they have taken children away from their parents and turned them into drones. These horrible
devices are cell phones. The worst part though is when children lose these devices we expect they perhaps will do something healthy or active, but
honestly they merely devote themselves to reuniting with their phones. Teenagers won't sleep until they have it back their hands. I would
understand after all, I am one of those teenagers consumed by my phone. Once, I misplaced it, and spent the next two hours of my life focused
solely on locating my phone, that is how precious it is to me. It started one afternoon when I was riding my bike with my friends and I had just
popped a fresh piece of gum in my mouth. As the fresh mint swirled around in my mouth, I recalled that my mom needed me home by 4:30 pm, so
I reached in my pocket to check the time on my phone. I feel around, but nothing is there except for some ancient pocket lint. I slammed on my
breaks and immediately assumed the worse. I lost it in a gutter somewhere, so I retraced my steps to the nearest opening in the gutter. As I bent
down to peer into the storm sewer it smelled like someone had thrown up on a dead squirrel. No phone in the gutter, so before long I assumed that
one of my friends had stolen it from me. I began yelling and acting like it wasn't a playful joke anymore, but none of them had it. I biked home like

Why Is Lydia Darragh A Fake Tale?
Lydia Darragh was a brave Quaker Housewife living on Second Street when the British occupied Philadelphia on September 26th, 1777. Many
major wars were taking place, and they were known as the American Revolution when referred to as one. She supported the war effort and was
read out of her meetings because of that support. There is no concrete proof of Darragh's stories, but a family member brought her memorable
actions to life. That member was Darragh's daughter, Ann, who recounted the story years after it played out. Since Ann's testimonies have some
information that does not fit with other accounts, some historians have dismissed it as a fake tale. The British made Darragh move out of her
house so that they could use that area. Lydia wanted to stay because she had two children to take care of. She decided to ask Lord Howe for
permission to remain where she was. On her way, she met up with a British officer who surprisingly turned out to be a second cousin, Captain
Barrington, from Ireland. Due to Barrington, Darragh was allowed to stay in her home while keeping a room available for British officers to hold
meetings. Lydia Darragh carried out many courageous actions to support the Americans in the war. First, on the night of December 2nd, her house
served as a conference center for top British Officers. The officers engaged deeply as Howe sharpened his plans for a major offensive against
Whitemarsh on the 4th. General Howe, obtaining information from his spies, heard

The Great Chain of Being ideology developed before the Elizabethan Era, and was supported by the people of Catholic religion. The Elizabethan
Era took place from 1558 to 1603, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, in England (Manteo). Before the era had taken place, the Roman Catholics
believed in a ranking system for every part of the universe, and believed each part of the universe held a specific position in the world and carried
out functions according to its part. ("The Medieval, Catholic Roots of the Elizabethan World."). Catholics described the hierarchy as , "At the very top

Existence of a Valid Contract
2.Breach of the Contract 's Terms
3.Damages for Breach of Contract
If, and only if, these elements are met, the plaintiff, in this case Ms. Lee, can effectively argue her case and potentially win this case. Conversely,
if Disney is able to prove that her accusations fall short of the requirements for a breach of contract suit, Disney will be able to successfully defend
against the suit. The element of breach of contract that falls into issue in this case is whether or not there was an actual breach of the contract's
terms. Under Ms. Lee 's claim of breach of contract, her argument revolves around the ambiguity of the text within the contract. In her defense, she
claims that sales of "videocassettes" were authorized by the 1952 contract. Her contract stated the sale of "phonographic recordings and/or
transcriptions for sale to the public," but lacked the specificity of the term "videocassettes." Ms. Lee's claim is that she was not paid what was entitled
to her; the profits accrued from the sales of "video cassettes." If video cassettes are to be understood as "transcriptions," her argument holds a valid
case. In contrast, under Disney's defense to the breach of contract, they base their argument on another factor. Under their customs and usage provision
of this contract, Disney interpreted the sales of videocassettes as "any other technology to be invented." Although videocassettes were

Transnationalism: The Study of Population Moves
"As a theoretical construct about immigrant life and identity, transnationalism aptly suits the study of population movements in a world where
improved modes of transport, as well as the images that are transmitted by means of modern telecommunications have shortened the social distance
between sending and receiving countries." An immigrant's ability to adapt to a different nation has become an easier task than it was before. Customs,
practices, religions, political standings and cultures have blended in many nations to create an almost global civilization where media and

Customs, social, and political practices, as well as, cultural identities were exchanged between the receiving and sending nations, the migrants and
nonmigrants. This formed a hybrid community in order accomodate the growing number of Miraflorenos immigrating to Boston. Peggy Levitt
describes it by saying that: "Strong ties between migrants and nonmigrants created a transnational religious sphere within which people, resources, and
social remittances were constantly exchanged."(Levitt 1998: 74) This case is a perfect example of religious globalization, showing that there is a
constant exchange in beliefs, customs, practices, and information between sending and receiving naitions through the immigrants and their social
networks. Communities and religious organizations adapt and change in order to accomodate and sustain the mixture of cultural heritages. In turn,
those changes influence both the migrants and nonmigrants involved, which then spread from the recieving nation to the sending nation and
vice–versa. In this specific case, Levitt states that: "...immigrants communicate these adapted practices back to their homelands. they may then be

Life Is A Tragic Loss Of A Classmate
No matter how old or young we are, we have all had adversities to face. Whether good or bad, some are more difficult than others. Mine just so
happens to be a tragic loss of a classmate. In 2013, Dillon Jamal Neal was just starting his junior year of high school. Proudly wearing number

Benedict Arnold
The name Benedict Arnold has become a synonym for a traitor to one's country. In the first years of the American Revolution, however, Arnold was a

The Complex Issues Surrounding The Agriculture Street...
Public Housing
The complex issues surrounding the Agriculture Street Landfill are part of a much larger story about environmental justice and public housing that,
while an entrenched part of the city's history, came to the forefront post–Katrina. According to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies
Health Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., "a powerfully discriminatory tendency in planning is for environmentally vulnerable low–income
neighborhoods to be deemed disposable, whereas equally vulnerable high–income neighborhoods are deemed indispensable because they are more
valuable (Morse 2008)." Nowhere has this been more evident than in these poor, black New Orleans neighborhoods, historically dominated by public
housing.
New Orleans politicians, city officials, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) repeatedly stressed housing as their number one
priority following Hurricane Katrina, which by some estimates damaged 434,000 homes in the New Orleans area and destroyed nearly 140,000 of
them (Aldrich and Cook 2008). Yet, shortly after Katrina made landfall, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
spoke of not rebuilding all of the public housing lost during the storm. During recovery, the city closed down and fenced off many of the public
housing developments, to the delight of some government officials. "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God
did," Rep. Richard H. Baker, a

The Rev. Charles Richard
The Rev. Charles Richard became the third pastor of the parish in 1895, coming to Sacred Heart from Gibson, Louisiana. He was a familiar figure
riding on horseback on one of his three horses, "Fanny," "Dolly" and "Charley," as he traveled through the parish. The French–Canadian Richard
offered all the services in French, although he did present some of the homilies in English beginning in 1906 . On March 23, 1896, the Francois
Viguerie property was transferred to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The property was one arpent (608.46) linear feet wide to the point of the survey
which was interpreted to be the 40 arpent line. The recorded deed is in the Terrebonne Parish Conveyances book as Deed 455. A second piece of
property was received from Albert R. Viguerie on December 17, 1897. [insert picture of Prompt Succor] On December 17, 1897, on behalf of

Common Core State Standards Summary
According to the Common Core State Standards, third graders should demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships and
nuances in word meanings (CCSS L.3.5). The purpose of the word study lesson is to introduce students to figurative language. More specifically, we
wanted students to be able to distinguish the figurative and literal meanings of idioms. They will use More Parts by Tedd Arnold to create a poster
distinguishing the figurative and literal meanings of idioms used in the book. By using the context of the book along with its illustrations, students will
have an easier time deciphering the idioms and will become more familiar with the phrases being used. The main goal of this lesson is to not only

Analysis Of Concepts In The Hundred Dresss By Eleanor Estes
We all had something when we were younger that put the spotlight on us as children. Whether it was an unusual last name, big ears, or funny freckles
there was something that made us insecure or self–conscious. I can remember being made fun of for my last name "Hartung". Kids used to ask me if
my tongue was a heart and I would begrudgingly answer saying that Hartung actually meant royalty in German, which was a lie but it was what my
parents told me to say. In "The Hundred Dresses", Eleanor Estes illustrates these concepts that still hold true today because no matter how time goes
on children will always be made fun of for ailments they cannot help. She explains how putting others down due to things that are out of their control,
such as a funny last name like "Hartung", will never make you feel better about yourself. Eleanor Estes goes on to show how you should stand up for
people because being a bystander makes you part of the problem, something that adults and kids alike struggle with today. Lastly, she shows how
everyone is unique and although there may be something a little different about someone that does not mean they do not have other talents that make
them special in the best way possible.
Whenever someone feels unsure of themselves their first reaction typically is to attack those around them in an effort put themselves on a pedestal
maybe this is why Maddie never stood up for Wanda. Maddie herself was poor so it was easy to let others make fun of Wanda because

Baldwin's My Dungeon Shook: A Letter to my Nephew
Does the American Dream belong to every one or does it exclude some individuals? The American Dream is a very powerful force that molds
America. It has existed for many generations but has it changed over time? The foundation of the Dream tends to stay the same that is the pursuit of
happiness, hope, freedom, justice and equality. The concepts within the American Dream shouldalter to fit the changes of society. The breakthroughs

African Americans have to strive extremely hard to be successful and obtain a place in America. When reading Baldwin's statement it seems much like
Martin Luther King Jr. statement: "One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile
in his own land"(3). African Americans are trying to obtain their place in American society but are restricted to the area that the white Americans set
aside for them. Both Martin Luther King Jr. and James Baldwin are striving to make a difference to better America by publicly sharing their emotions.
Indeed Baldwin's letter expressed public awareness but it also consisted of personal elements that only his nephew was intended to understand. "You
can only be destroyed by believing that you really are what the white world calls a nigger" (Baldwin 243). This statement illustrates the pain that
Baldwin feels deep inside. When a person calls someone a nigger it lowers their self–worth and causes them thoughts of despair. The white society can
be hurtful to African Americans by underestimating what they say. When someone is constantly being called a nigger they start to believe that they
really are what they have always been called. When a person believes they are a nigger they lower their goals and ostracism thinking that they are not
accepted and they will never be. Situations like this are hard to grasp unless one lives them like Baldwin did. The fact that

The Awakening By Katherine O ' Flaherty
"Katherine O'Flaherty was born in St. Lois, Missouri, to a Creole–Irish family that enjoyed a high place in society. Her father died when she was four,
and Kate was raised by her mother, grandmother, and great–grandmother. Very well read at young age, she received her formal education at the St.
Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart. In 1870, she married Oscar Chopin, a Louisiana businessman, and lived with him in Natchitoches parish and New
Orleans, where she became a close observer of Creole and Cajun life. Following her husband's sudden death in 1884 she returned to St. Louis,
where she raised her six children and began her literary career. In slightly more than a decade she produced a substantial body work, including the
story collection Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897) and the classic novella The Awakening (1899), which was greeted with a storm of
criticism for its frank treatment of female sexuality" (Mays 439).
"The story of an Hour" was written on April 19, 1894, and first published in Vogue on December 6, 1894, under the title "The Dream of an Hour," one
of nineteen Kate Chopin stories that Vogue published. It was reprinted in St. Louis Life on January 5, 1895. The St. Louis Life version includes

Similarities Between Bonnie And Clyde
Are you familiar with Bonnie and Clyde? If not, they were a couple, who were also criminals. Through The Great Depression, they went around the
United States committing crimes. They ran against the law for just about four years, they were just about invincible. I will be talking about how they
met, their early life, and their journey together. They had a very interesting journey. It is so interesting how opposite they were, yet still so much alike.
Bonnie Parker was born on October 1, 1910. When she was just four years old her father died, and her mother took her family to a poor suburb of
Dallas. From several people, Bonnie was beautiful, was 4'11, and was approximately 90 pounds. She was a bright student and earned honors in her

decision to make, would she stay with Clyde and live a life running from the law, or would she leave him and start fresh? She had known that since
Clyde vowed never to go back to prison, if she stayed with him they both would die soon. She stayed with him. To help avoid being captured, Clyde
would be in a different car frequently. " In the months that followed, Clyde and a changing gang committed a series of robberies at various small

changed. God had intervened in man's plans, and Campbell arrived within 10 days. After his first meeting held in the Presbyterian church, he was
asked to join the all night prayer meeting. Gathering in a nearby cottage, 30 people came. He observed, "God was beginning to move, the heavens
were opening, we were there on our faces before God." God swept in at 3 a.m. Half the men and women were laying prostrate on the floor. About a
dozen men and women lay prostrate on the floor, speechless. They sensed that forces of darkness were leaving, and men and women would be

People were coming from all over the island. Large numbers were converted as the Holy Spirit convicted them of sin. Many were weeping, some
laying prostrate. At the end as Duncan gave the benediction, a young man started to pray out loud, and he kept praying for 45 minutes. The church
continued to be filled with people repenting. The meeting did not stop until 4 a.m. when Campbell was able to give the benediction again. When he
was leaving the church, someone told him, "People are gathering at the police station that are in spiritual distress. They are coming from all over the
parish. Can someone go and pray with them?" In the night the people were gathering under the glow of the stars. Men and women were standing on
the road. All were crying for God's mercy. The revival had come. Campbell stated: "That went on for five weeks with services from early morning until

Characteristics Of The Elizabethan Era
Class Classification The Great Chain of Being ideology developed before the Elizabethan Era, and was supported by the people of Catholic
religion. The Elizabethan Era took place from 1558 to 1603, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, in England (Manteo). Before the era had taken
place, the Roman Catholics believed in a ranking system for every part of the universe, and believed each part of the universe held a specific
position in the world and carried out functions according to its part. ("The Medieval, Catholic Roots of the Elizabethan World."). Catholics described
the hierarchy as, "At the very top is God, who created all things. Below God, in descending order, are the various levels of angels, the stars, the Sun,

Benedict Arnold Motivation
Benedict Arnold, "the most recognized name in American History 101" (Kullman, 2015), has become tantamount with the word traitor. Nowadays,
Benedict Arnold has become infamous for his treacherous plot of giving West Point to the Redcoats, but I like to believe that most people overlook his
paramount embroilment in the early stages of the Revolutionary War and the reasons that he decided to betray the United States. Arnold's decision
wasn't one dimensional. In other words, many factors were prevalent during the time of his attempt at treason that could have tipped him into the idea of
betraying America.
Born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut, Benedict Arnold appeared to most as an interesting figure. According to Notable Biographies
(n.d.), "Arnold was a risk–taker who looked for outlets for his energetic and impulsive (taking action before thinking things through) nature. He
volunteered for the French and Indian War (1754–63), a war fought between France and England in America for control of the colonial lands, but at
eighteen he deserted in order to be with his mother, who was dying." Arnold's impulsive behavior and his aptitude for war continued to be prevalent
in his life, but one thing that haunted his childhood would have to be death, seeing that three of his siblings and both his parents died. Arnold's mother
passed away in 1759. Secondly, Arnold's father "proved to be a drunkard; only after [Benedict Arnold] moved to New Haven could he begin to free

St. Joseph's Motivation
Motivation
Motivation for parish staff to continue work at St. Joseph's resides in their desire to foster the mission of the Church–both on the broad level and on the
more specific level of St. Joseph's. We felt the fulfillment of the parish staff strongly. While working at the parish is indeed a job, we experienced a
mentality that staff members felt privileged to work at St. Joseph's. One of the accountants, Cathy Bohnen, stated she looks forward to coming in to St.
Joseph's. We believe this supports the notion that the environment at St. Joseph's is one which encourages and supports its staff members simply by
creating an environment conducive to the work expected of staff.
The parish nurtures this innate motivation to work for the Church in several ways; first, there is daily morning prayer for the staff. Whoever is around
and desires to participate gathers at the front desk where a short prayer reflection occurs. In addition, Fr. Creagan encourages daily Mass; these practices
spiritually nourish the staff members. It would seem natural for this community to exist within a parish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

improvements to the school and evangelization of parishioners–especially those whose children have graduated from the school. One thing that stood
out most was the willingness of Fr. Creagan and his staff to continually evaluate and implement new strategies within St. Joseph's. This was true both
within the larger parish and within the community of the office. It is through this business practice that St. Joseph's experiences great success.
Additionally, the effectiveness of this business practice has led to a lively parish which seeks to spiritually cultivate its

In the academic library that I chose to examine, finding the reference desk is no easy task for the unfamiliar patron. With three major entrances and
six floors to navigate, this library is an epitome of what most libraries would strive to have: boundless space for patrons and a vast, growing collection.
The patron, however, could easily take one glance at this gargantuan building and easily become overwhelmed, despite the services that this one
building contains, such as being combined with financial aid, the information technology (IT) center, and areas to grab coffee and snacks. It is my hope

Eventually, I was able to find a seat to left of the reference desk. This allowed me to see the patrons as they walked up to the desk and the activities

Through the duration of the forty minutes I spent observing the reference desk, there are three people present: one who was absorbed in his
computer; one who was obviously bored and playing with his cell phone; and an older gentleman who was roving around the confines of the desk.
Between visits from patrons, the staff members conversed freely, even standing up and stretching their legs on occasion. Towards the second half of
the observation, one of the staff members retreated into the back room behind the reference desk. In the time dedicated to observing these
interactions, six patrons came to the desk, with only two of them having reference related questions. The first patron to approach the desk arrived at

A Short Story : A Story?
Anaru woke up covered in sweat, the ground was cold and hard. He had just had a terrible nightmare. He had had the same nightmare three nights

knew that these reoccurring nightmares had to mean something so he went to the village elder and explained what was going on, "every time I go

how am I supposed to do that?" The elder laughed a little and whispered, "that is something you must discover yourself" Anaru left the hut more
confused than before. How was he supposed to explore a dream? Anaru was almost annoyed by the elder's mysterious answer, but he knew that

Mad Men Sociological / Semiotic Analysis Essay
Every so often there is a television program that attracts a large audience because it is brilliantly written and entertaining. One of the most recent
television shows to do this has been Mad Men. The show revolves around an advertising agency in the 1960's and it's key players in the company,
more specifically Don Draper. Being set in the 1960's, it is important to do both a sociological and semiotic analysis of the show. Society and human
interactions have changed dramatically over the past fifty years and while it is a scripted television show and not a documentary, the drama prides
itself on paying close attention to details and keeping everything true to the time period. It would be interesting and informative to do an analysis...

Who Is Kate Chopin?
Since the dawn of time women have been oppressed by a society that forces them to feel and think a certain way. Despite society's rules, women like
Kate Chopin have always found an outlet to express their thoughts and opinions to others. Chopin was one of the first feminist writers and was often
criticized for the content of her work. Although she was praised for her writing, many people disliked the content because she depicted her main
characters as women who wanted to become independent and chase their own desires; which was seen as unorthodox and unethical during her time

All Of The Three Evils
Thus far, this section is the most enlightening when contemplating my day–to–day experiences in the Church. As Pope Francis calls us to missionary
spirituality, I can embrace the invitation and pragmatically layout how I would approach it on a daily basis. I am anxious of impediments in living out
this spirituality. After reading this section, I am at ease and peace knowing that we are not alone in this struggle. Pope Francis addresses the issues
head–on without wavering from an enthusiasm that can only come from the true Joy of the Gospel. In saying yes to the missionary spirituality we
renew our faith rooted in our baptism and confirmation. Pope Francis sheds light on the three evils which derail our "Yes" to this missionary
spirituality. #78 "As a result, one can observe in many agents of evangelization, even though they pray, a heightened individualism, a crisis of
identity and a cooling of fervor. These are three evils which fuel one another." In all of the three evils the self is the center instead of God. We live in
an "I" society and this mentality has definitely trickled into the Church. The "your way right away" individualized consumerism is how people have
been conditioned and they expect this in all areas of life. Sadly, this is true for those who serve the church as staff, lay minsters and volunteers. I
observed and dealt with situations in where you have two individuals speaking at each other instead of to each other. At times of registration at

  • 2. Essay on Salem Witch Trial Theories Brennyn Mackey 2 May 2011 The Secret War of Salem Exposing the Culprit behind the Mass Hysteria The Salem Witch Trials were a series of infamous events that demand an explanation for their occurrence. The trials that took place in 1692 caused neighbors in the community of Salem Village in the colony of Massachusetts to turn on one another out of paranoia, accusing one another of witchcraft. According to Carol Karlsen, a longtime author of the subject, nineteen people were hanged and about 200 others were imprisoned (40). A few theories have been offered in order to explain the root of this mass hysteria. The theories in question need to be examined to see which holds the most credibility. Most historians who have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to their research: Ergot poisoning in individuals with adequate vitamin A intakes leads to gangrenous rather than convulsive symptoms. Vitamin A is found both in fish and in dairy products. Salem Village was a farming community and Salem Town, which bordered the village, was a well–known seaport; cows and fish were plentiful. There is no evidence to suggest a vitamin A deficiency in the diet of the inhabitants, and it would be particularly unlikely for the so–called "afflicted girls," some of whom came from well–to–do farming families. The absence of any instance of gangrenous symptomatology makes it highly unlikely that ergot played any role in the Salem crisis (Spanos). The theory that there was an ergot infestation does not seem to hold up to the accounts of Spanos and Gottlieb. The theory of ergot infestation has slowly lost credibility due to these pieces of evidence. Another theory that attempts to explain the paranoia is the theory that witchcraft was being practiced in the community. The word "witch" came into English from Wicca, an Anglo–Saxon word that means "wise one" (Buckland 26). Witches have been viewed throughout history as servants of Satan,

  • 4. St. Louis And New Orleans Kate Chopin was born Katherine O'Flaherty on February 8, 1851, in St. Louis, Missouri, into a socially prominent family with roots in the French past of both St. Louis and New Orleans. Her father, Thomas O'Flaherty, an immigrant from Ireland, had lived in New York and Illinois before settling in St. Louis, where he prospered as the owner of a commission house. In 1839, he married into a well–known Creole family, members of the city's social elite, but his wife died in childbirth only a year later. In 1844, he married Eliza Faris, merely fifteen years old but, according to French custom, eligible for marriage. Faris was the daughter of a Huguenot man who had migrated from Virginia and a woman who was descended from the Charlevilles, among the earliest French settlers in America. Kate was one of three children born to her parents and the only one to live to mature years. In 1855, tragedy struck the O'Flaherty family when her father, now a director of the Pacific Railroad, was killed in a train wreck; thereafter, Kate lived in a house of many widows – her mother, grandmother, and great–grandmother Charleville. In 1860, she entered the St. Louis Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic institution where French history, language, and culture were stressed – as they were, also, in her own household. Such an early absorption in French culture would eventually influence Chopin's own writing, an adaptation in some ways of French forms to American themes. Chopin graduated from the ... • 5. Benedict Arnold Traitor Or Traitor In the Revolutionary War, there were many different influencers that affected the course of the War. Both the American Colonies and the British had brave and noble heroes. Yet there was one man who became a traitor and disliked by both sides in his lifetime. Benedict Arnold was an egotistical, bold man who managed to find himself without anywhere to run do despise, or perhaps more because of, his actions and behavior during the Revolution. Benedict Arnold had always been devilish, even from a young age. As a child he was known to cause trouble and harm. Rumor has it that some of his "earliest amusements" included robbing birds' nests and sprinkling broken glass on the path to school where other children would cut their feet. He remained... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he got back to the colonies General Washington promoted him to the rank of a brigadier general. Arnold went on to fight in many battles, most of them becoming a win. His rash courage and impatient energy helped him be remarkably successful on the battle field, but it also was the cause of severe losses in his troops. Several officers disapproved of him, but Washington's personal efforts kept him from becoming resigned. As a brigadier general he fought heroically at the Battle of Saratoga until his leg was, again, severely wounded. This time the injury caused a chronic, and severe, limp that he had for the rest of his life. Unable to continue on field, he was restored to a proper relative rank, where General Washington placed Arnold in command of a Philadelphia base. Although he remained bold his whole life, he used his attributes to help contribute to the Revolution. Despite how supportive he was for the first part of his life, Benedict Arnold is most famous for betraying the Revolution and the Colonies. Once Arnold dropped ranks and was forced to stay off the field, he became restless and aggravated. He had always been called by the life of luxury, and felt as if he deserved a higher title for all of his efforts in the war. Deciding to turn to the British, Arnold needed a post from which he could do the most service to their cause. He requested and received the command of the American ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Who Is Benedict Arnold A Traitor Desiring recognition and the feeling of pride brings a fullness in life so if you were to not being given the proper recognition, if you were utterly ignored, if you were tossed aside and others received credit for your very own work, is if you were faced to choose between taking the high road and becoming a better human being or would you act out in vengeance? Benedict Arnold's historical acclaim is often associated with the traitor activity, by examining the experiences with Arnold, Americans are able to appreciate his leadership prior to his betrayal; his character is really revealed through his past and all that he accomplished for his beloved country. Benedict Arnold sacrificed a lot for the greater good of the American people. Arnold is not given recognition for all of the victories that he had been involved in and at a time during a promotion he gets passed up by low ranking, less talented, less dedicated men than himself. "Major General Horatio Gates took credit for the victory. As if that weren't enough of an insult, Congress had promoted five officers–all Arnold's juniors and most far less talented–over him. Even back then politics was part of the equation as Congress ignored Washington's consistent backing and praise for Arnold, whom he admired as a fierce soldier." (Beck 105). Also, "Benedict Arnold was a hero before he turned traitor. And just how he turned is a complicated story. Arnold made his name in upstate New York, fighting for control of a chain of ... • 8. Cell Phones And Their Effects On Children They have come in and taken over our society, they have taken children away from their parents and turned them into drones. These horrible devices are cell phones. The worst part though is when children lose these devices we expect they perhaps will do something healthy or active, but honestly they merely devote themselves to reuniting with their phones. Teenagers won't sleep until they have it back their hands. I would understand after all, I am one of those teenagers consumed by my phone. Once, I misplaced it, and spent the next two hours of my life focused solely on locating my phone, that is how precious it is to me. It started one afternoon when I was riding my bike with my friends and I had just popped a fresh piece of gum in my mouth. As the fresh mint swirled around in my mouth, I recalled that my mom needed me home by 4:30 pm, so I reached in my pocket to check the time on my phone. I feel around, but nothing is there except for some ancient pocket lint. I slammed on my breaks and immediately assumed the worse. I lost it in a gutter somewhere, so I retraced my steps to the nearest opening in the gutter. As I bent down to peer into the storm sewer it smelled like someone had thrown up on a dead squirrel. No phone in the gutter, so before long I assumed that one of my friends had stolen it from me. I began yelling and acting like it wasn't a playful joke anymore, but none of them had it. I biked home like Speedy Gonzalez, and sprinted to my room, tearing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Why Is Lydia Darragh A Fake Tale? Lydia Darragh was a brave Quaker Housewife living on Second Street when the British occupied Philadelphia on September 26th, 1777. Many major wars were taking place, and they were known as the American Revolution when referred to as one. She supported the war effort and was read out of her meetings because of that support. There is no concrete proof of Darragh's stories, but a family member brought her memorable actions to life. That member was Darragh's daughter, Ann, who recounted the story years after it played out. Since Ann's testimonies have some information that does not fit with other accounts, some historians have dismissed it as a fake tale. The British made Darragh move out of her house so that they could use that area. Lydia wanted to stay because she had two children to take care of. She decided to ask Lord Howe for permission to remain where she was. On her way, she met up with a British officer who surprisingly turned out to be a second cousin, Captain Barrington, from Ireland. Due to Barrington, Darragh was allowed to stay in her home while keeping a room available for British officers to hold meetings. Lydia Darragh carried out many courageous actions to support the Americans in the war. First, on the night of December 2nd, her house served as a conference center for top British Officers. The officers engaged deeply as Howe sharpened his plans for a major offensive against Whitemarsh on the 4th. General Howe, obtaining information from his spies, heard ... • 12. The New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange The stock exchange is a place where individuals or investors can buy and sell shares of stock in any company on the list of exchange. Most people in the United States talk of stock exchange, referring to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). NYSE is the largest in the world with increasing importance of Internet trading, moving more and more from a physical trading floor to a global network of exchanges linked electronically from cyber space (Jill, 2006). Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, also known as Guggenheim by the majority, was established in 1939 by Solomon R. Guggenheim as a museum of Non–Objective Painting. This was under the guidance of Hilla Von Rebay who was the first director. It is located on the upper east side of Manhattan in New York City. It acquired its current name Solomon R (Jill, 2006). Guggenheim after the death of its founder in 1952. Solomon R. Guggenheim had been collecting his works of old masters back in 1980s. They met with Hilla Von Rebay who was an artist in 1926, who in turn introduced him to European Avant–grade art of which she felt had some spiritual and utopian aspect. (Heartney, 1999). As a result, Guggenheim changed his strategy of collecting and turned to the work of Wassily Kandinsky, just to mention. Initially, he displayed his collection at his apartment in New York City to the public. His collection grew and in 1937, he established Solomon R. The Elizabethan Era took place from 1558 to 1603, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, in England (Manteo). Before the era had taken place, the Roman Catholics believed in a ranking system for every part of the universe, and believed each part of the universe held a specific position in the world and carried out functions according to its part. ("The Medieval, Catholic Roots of the Elizabethan World."). Catholics described the hierarchy as , "At the very top is God, who created all things. Conversely, if Disney is able to prove that her accusations fall short of the requirements for a breach of contract suit, Disney will be able to successfully defend against the suit. The element of breach of contract that falls into issue in this case is whether or not there was an actual breach of the contract's terms. Under Ms. Lee 's claim of breach of contract, her argument revolves around the ambiguity of the text within the contract. In her defense, she claims that sales of "videocassettes" were authorized by the 1952 contract. Her contract stated the sale of "phonographic recordings and/or transcriptions for sale to the public," but lacked the specificity of the term "videocassettes." Ms. Lee's claim is that she was not paid what was entitled to her; the profits accrued from the sales of "video cassettes." If video cassettes are to be understood as "transcriptions," her argument holds a valid case. In contrast, under Disney's defense to the breach of contract, they base their argument on another factor. Under their customs and usage provision of this contract, Disney interpreted the sales of videocassettes as "any other technology to be invented." Although videocassettes were

Transnationalism: The Study of Population Moves "As a theoretical construct about immigrant life and identity, transnationalism aptly suits the study of population movements in a world where improved modes of transport, as well as the images that are transmitted by means of modern telecommunications have shortened the social distance between sending and receiving countries." An immigrant's ability to adapt to a different nation has become an easier task than it was before. Mine just so happens to be a tragic loss of a classmate. In 2013, Dillon Jamal Neal was just starting his junior year of high school. Proudly wearing number fifty–five on Friday nights, Dillon played defensive end for the Ouachita Parish Lions in what we call, The Lion's Den. He had such a lighthearted spirit that you cherish knowing someone like him forever. He was an angel who walked amongst the Earth, that God called home to honor Dillon with a pair of wings he earned. It has been four years since he left the Earth and there is not a day that goes by that I do not think back on the crazy conversations we had or all the laughs we shared over the years. After Dillon passed away, I realized that death does not wait on anyone so you should get your life right with God while you still can. On November 1, 2013, the day of Friday night football, Ouachita Parish High School and West Monroe High School went head to head in the biggest rivalry football game of the season. • 22. The Complex Issues Surrounding The Agriculture Street... Public Housing The complex issues surrounding the Agriculture Street Landfill are part of a much larger story about environmental justice and public housing that, while an entrenched part of the city's history, came to the forefront post–Katrina. According to the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies Health Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., "a powerfully discriminatory tendency in planning is for environmentally vulnerable low–income neighborhoods to be deemed disposable, whereas equally vulnerable high–income neighborhoods are deemed indispensable because they are more valuable (Morse 2008)." Nowhere has this been more evident than in these poor, black New Orleans neighborhoods, historically dominated by public housing. New Orleans politicians, city officials, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) repeatedly stressed housing as their number one priority following Hurricane Katrina, which by some estimates damaged 434,000 homes in the New Orleans area and destroyed nearly 140,000 of them (Aldrich and Cook 2008). Yet, shortly after Katrina made landfall, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development spoke of not rebuilding all of the public housing lost during the storm. During recovery, the city closed down and fenced off many of the public housing developments, to the delight of some government officials. "We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. Whether it was an unusual last name, big ears, or funny freckles there was something that made us insecure or self–conscious. I can remember being made fun of for my last name "Hartung". Kids used to ask me if my tongue was a heart and I would begrudgingly answer saying that Hartung actually meant royalty in German, which was a lie but it was what my parents told me to say. In "The Hundred Dresses", Eleanor Estes illustrates these concepts that still hold true today because no matter how time goes on children will always be made fun of for ailments they cannot help. She explains how putting others down due to things that are out of their control, such as a funny last name like "Hartung", will never make you feel better about yourself. Eleanor Estes goes on to show how you should stand up for people because being a bystander makes you part of the problem, something that adults and kids alike struggle with today. Lastly, she shows how everyone is unique and although there may be something a little different about someone that does not mean they do not have other talents that make them special in the best way possible. Arnold's decision wasn't one dimensional. In other words, many factors were prevalent during the time of his attempt at treason that could have tipped him into the idea of betraying America. Born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut, Benedict Arnold appeared to most as an interesting figure. One of the accountants, Cathy Bohnen, stated she looks forward to coming in to St. Joseph's. We believe this supports the notion that the environment at St. Joseph's is one which encourages and supports its staff members simply by creating an environment conducive to the work expected of staff. The parish nurtures this innate motivation to work for the Church in several ways; first, there is daily morning prayer for the staff. With three major entrances and six floors to navigate, this library is an epitome of what most libraries would strive to have: boundless space for patrons and a vast, growing collection. The patron, however, could easily take one glance at this gargantuan building and easily become overwhelmed, despite the services that this one building contains, such as being combined with financial aid, the information technology (IT) center, and areas to grab coffee and snacks. It is my hope that upon observing and engaging with the reference department that they will prove themselves to be helpful and accessible to patrons known and... This allowed me to see the patrons as they walked up to the desk and the activities that occurred in the staff work area. Behind the desk, there are enough computer stations that four staff members can work comfortably at a time. Through the duration of the forty minutes I spent observing the reference desk, there are three people present: one who was absorbed in his computer; one who was obviously bored and playing with his cell phone; and an older gentleman who was roving around the confines of the desk. Between visits from patrons, the staff members conversed freely, even standing up and stretching their legs on occasion. Towards the second half of the observation, one of the staff members retreated into the back room behind the reference desk. In the time dedicated to observing these interactions, six patrons came to the desk, with only two of them having reference related questions. The first patron to approach the desk arrived at 2:40. Clad in a runner's outfit, she did not look older than nineteen. She must not have realized this was the desk that she needed because as she almost walked by it completely, she did a double take. The gentlemen at the desk did not even glance at her until she was standing in front of the desk. The staff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. A Short Story : A Story? Anaru woke up covered in sweat, the ground was cold and hard. He had just had a terrible nightmare. He had had the same nightmare three nights in a row. Every time the same thing happened, he was swimming in the river, the water was always jet black and every time a group of eels would bite into his leg. Using the rows of hooked teeth in their mouth to hold his legs tight. Then they would start to pull him under water, every time he would fight with all his energy, but every time the eels would pull him under, and just as he thought he was going to die he would wake up. He knew that these reoccurring nightmares had to mean something so he went to the village elder and explained what was going on, "every time I go to sleep I have the same nightmare, the eels they attack and kill me, what does it mean," The elder responded in a low gravelly voice, "young one these nightmares trouble me, the meaning of them is still not clear, you must go back to your dreams explore within your mind," Anaru replied, "but how am I supposed to do that?" The elder laughed a little and whispered, "that is something you must discover yourself" Anaru left the hut more confused than before. How was he supposed to explore a dream? Anaru was almost annoyed by the elder's mysterious answer, but he knew that everything the elders said and did had a purpose. That night before he went to sleep Anaru prayed to Tangaroa, the Maori god of water for protection in his dreams from whatever lurked below the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Mad Men Sociological / Semiotic Analysis Essay Every so often there is a television program that attracts a large audience because it is brilliantly written and entertaining. One of the most recent television shows to do this has been Mad Men. The show revolves around an advertising agency in the 1960's and it's key players in the company, more specifically Don Draper. Being set in the 1960's, it is important to do both a sociological and semiotic analysis of the show. Society and human interactions have changed dramatically over the past fifty years and while it is a scripted television show and not a documentary, the drama prides itself on paying close attention to details and keeping everything true to the time period. It would be interesting and informative to do an analysis... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Peggy's chosen lifestyle is opposite the other women in the show outside of Sterling Cooper, mainly Don Draper's wife Betty. Don Draper is a very successful, so his wife gets to spend her days looking at art, or riding horses. Their socioeconomic stance allows her to spend her entire day doing leisure activities and not be worried about such trivial things as work. Betty even had a nanny, so as not to over exert herself with cooking dinner and taking care of their children after all that horseback riding. Being a housewife to a successful man, Betty lived a very different lifestyle than the young girls who worked as secretaries. The secretaries in Sterling Cooper created their own small hierarchy which can be viewed as a bureaucracy. Joan is the "head secretary," giving her a significant value to both the men and the secretaries. For the most part she decide who gets which secretary, and if changes should be made. She orders the other secretaries to do things and they listen knowing the power she holds behind the scenes (whether or not they know its because she's sleeping with one of the partners is another story). Joan was held in such high regard, even the men of Sterling Cooper would listen to her; mainly because she demanded respect and they were always hoping to impress Joan to hopefully catch her attention. This is also why it becomes so hard for Peggy when Joan begins to resent her for catching the attention of the men in the office ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite society's rules, women like Kate Chopin have always found an outlet to express their thoughts and opinions to others. Chopin was one of the first feminist writers and was often criticized for the content of her work. Although she was praised for her writing, many people disliked the content because she depicted her main characters as women who wanted to become independent and chase their own desires; which was seen as unorthodox and unethical during her time period (Ewell np). • 40. All Of The Three Evils Thus far, this section is the most enlightening when contemplating my day–to–day experiences in the Church. As Pope Francis calls us to missionary spirituality, I can embrace the invitation and pragmatically layout how I would approach it on a daily basis. I am anxious of impediments in living out this spirituality. After reading this section, I am at ease and peace knowing that we are not alone in this struggle. Pope Francis addresses the issues head–on without wavering from an enthusiasm that can only come from the true Joy of the Gospel. In saying yes to the missionary spirituality we renew our faith rooted in our baptism and confirmation. Pope Francis sheds light on the three evils which derail our "Yes" to this missionary spirituality. #78 "As a result, one can observe in many agents of evangelization, even though they pray, a heightened individualism, a crisis of identity and a cooling of fervor. These are three evils which fuel one another." In all of the three evils the self is the center instead of God. We live in an "I" society and this mentality has definitely trickled into the Church. The "your way right away" individualized consumerism is how people have been conditioned and they expect this in all areas of life. Sadly, this is true for those who serve the church as staff, lay minsters and volunteers. I observed and dealt with situations in where you have two individuals speaking at each other instead of to each other. At times of registration at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
