1. Questionnaire and findings
Here i have asked what an audience expects to see in a horror movie as it would help me to
identify the best features to put into my trailer. A body count and a
monster/killer/paranormal presence are tied at 60% and so are mostly expected. Suspense
and gore are not as much expected but still seem appropriate as they received 20%.
Here the audience have decided that the most suitable antagonist would be a human killer,
possibly being more realistic. This helps us to decide on the villain for our trailer which will
be human. A paranormal presence was the second most suitable so we had aspects of
paranormal activity.
2. This survey shows that the body count needs to be high in a film to be a horror. Ours is a
physiological horror so we included many murders and a high body count. Not all horrors
have a high body count but ours will need it which will satisfy the audience.
A murderer is compulsory as it shows a character taking lives which is iconic in a horror. If a
movie doesn’t have any murderer in any shape or form it doesn’t appear as horror.
Questions for my evaluation
Firstly what is your trailer about and why did you decide to use these ideas?
• It’s called the lesson, about a man whose wife is murdered and he is
pushed to insanity by his students causing him to murder.
3. • We decided to do this as it’s a unique idea, going against horror
conventions being in a school and having a respected figure becoming a
murderer.
• Talk about psychological horror, looks into the mind of a character, also
reduces amount of effects
Why did you decide to use the settings you did?
• talk about the graveyard being a gothic motif and a iconography of
horror related to death
• school links to the theme, also was a easy location for us to film in,
many open and dark spaces
Tell me about your character choices?
• Mr. cooper is the main antagonist, but also the stories main focus.
He is driven insane by the death of his wife and begins murdering.
We chose oye as this character because of his perfect portrayal of
an aggressive character. He is also dressed smartly challenging
conventions as villains....
• other minor characters include the boy insulting Mr. cooper, and
also a numerous amount of victims including another teacher
What was behind your music choices?
• We started with soft piano music (play) this builds suspense for
the audience which is recognisable with horror media
products. It then goes into faster paced music building
anticipation.
• Sounds we used included a heartbeat in a scene of a victim
running. This imitates the human heartbeat building fear. We
also had loud screaming and breathing noises which associates
with human suffering.
What editing and camera angles were used?
4. • We used a variety of camera angles, using our canon 60d.
We used the appropriate angles and shots such as over
shoulder shots in conversations between characters, first
person views from victims and depth of field shots when
the environment was important
• We edited it so that the more emotional, slow paced scenes
were at the beginning, associating with slow music. The fast
paced scenes went with the fast music, fading into build up
fear.
