History of thriller films
Thriller is a genre that has a range of subgenre like psychological
thriller, crime thriller, erotic thriller and mystery thrillers. The genre
itself is a film and television programming that interprets elements of
suspense, tension and terror. A thriller movie usually contains
different moods and a lot of thinking also red herrings and twist to
give the audience more suspense and leave them thinking. This also
has elements of psychological thinking where it plays tricks with the
human mind thinking that something’s that’s impossible is possible.
This particular genre usually has a concept and theme of revenge,
kidnapping and stalking. In this genre it goes into more categorize for
example the theme can be based around mind games and
physiological themes. Also go into action thriller where it would have
a plot throughout the film and a rescue or a mission.
Thrillers have changed during time and technology as the early
thrillers had limited equipment and now thrillers have so much
futuristic ideas and equipment. For example spy thrillers have
changed so much from before as they’re more higher and improved
technology to create more real stunts than in the early years.
Alfred Hitchcock’s was a popular director in the early years and is
known for (The lodger, Jack the ripper,
Blackmail) his films where well known
as he had is own stamp to the film by
having twist in endings of the film . His
films usually include violence, crime and
murder. In his films he seems to have
specific Idea of what he wants and
usually uses similar aspects throughout
his film making. He sometime uses film
making away of expressing his way of
dealing with obsession and desires.
2. Thrillers have changed as film making has changed. A modern film
seems to be more realistic and better quality due to the newer
equipment that has been
invented. A popular
physiological thriller is a film
called ‘Shutter Island’ directed
by Martin Scorsese. This is a
great example of a modern
thriller as it includes attention,
suspense and mind games. I
think the concept of this film
was outstanding as it had bits
of everything as well as
interest throughout the film.
This included elements of
another genre that was horror
and it was a good mix as it
showed insights of the genres.
Overall thriller films have the same elements but quality wise it has
changed overtime as there is more and improved equipment in film
making.
