The ring is an example of psychological horror but also involves aspects of a supernatural. One of the
first ideas of horror iconography is the use of low key lighting throughout the film. This use of
darkness has many connotations including evil, and fear which are upcoming themes in the movie.
Also in most of the scenes it is raining which associates with the characters moods after the death.
This use of pathetic fallacy relates to the film type, where moods are going to be negative because of
the psychological damage.
The sounds used in the film are effective in creating an unnatural environment. One prime example
is when the phone rings. The phone ringing is a motif for the movie and is one of the meanings for
the films name itself. When the phone does ring fast paced sinister music is played in the
background to build suspense. As an audience we can recognise sinister music as a sign of danger
approaching. Slow paced sinister music can be just as effective for example when they are in the car.
A girl’s scream is also used in the horse scene, which automatically relates to thoughts of pain and
suffering which are appropriate within the genre.
Some of the theories are present within this film. Todorovs idea of disequilibrium is reflected
through the introduction of the video and its link to the deaths which interrupt the lives of the main
protagonist. Strauss and his idea of binary opposites also appear with the idea of good vs. evil and
old vs. young. However personally I think Bathez idea of enigma is most relatable. Within this film
there is so much mystery and questions that the audience could ask. Who is the murderer? Why Is it
7 days? Why does the murderer choose to kill? Also the villain within the film has her faced covered
by hair, so features are hidden which implies mystery.
