The Honor Code
2. A large subsection of cosmopolitanism is the power of external public shaming, and the power of
shame to shape the behaviors of cultures. This is also the part of cosmopolitanism which can be
applied more broadly to societies than to individuals. In his book, The Honor Code, Appiah offers
various examples about the connected roles which shame and honor have respectively in guiding the
morality of different cultures, and how these influences change over time through external forces
which evaluate and judge the practices of that particular society. The reason he gives for honor
having enough weight to influence behavior to such an extent is "our deep and persistent concern
with status and respect, our human need for what Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel called
Anerkennung¬–¬recognition" (Honor xiii). This theory about honor connects to a psychological
notion that human beings are social creatures and depend on social connections and interactions for
a large part of our own self worth. Appiah goes on to say that "we human beings need others to
respond appropriately to who we are and to what we do. We need others to recognize us as
conscious and to acknowledge that we recognize them" (Honor xiii). Not only do humans need to be
recognized, but we must also have our actions affirmed, a theory which Appiah applies not only to
individuals, but to collective honor as well. a. This idea of honor is not entirely removed from his
cosmopolitan standards concerning morals, and Appiah

What Makes A Family?
As a leader, I have five core values that matter most to me; having a family, maintaining
order(tranquility), meaningful work, growth, and truth. I strongly believe in each one of these
components. Having a family is so important because they are a main support system. Family
doesn't have to be someone who is blood related. Family can be anyone who you feel means a lot to
you and supports you. Maintaining order(tranquility) is important because in the work place, you
need to have organization of some sort. With order, everything will simply fall into place.
Meaningful work describes itself. If what you're doing isn't meaningful to you then why are you
doing it? Growth is a key component because the point of doing something is hopefully to reach a
goal that you have set for yourself. You should aim to keep growing to eventually reach your goals.
Finally, truth is another very important value that I have. I believe truth can bring you happiness. If
you are living your life with lies on your mind you will never be content. Altogether, these five
components make up my list of most important personal values. As my team, you will first work
individually to come up with your own ideas. It is important to brainstorm on your own to see what
your own mind can come up with. You would be surprised how much you can think of on your own
if you really try. Next, you will all come together as a team and share your individual ideas. I believe
that by working as a team you are able to come

West Point Cheating Scandal Case Study
West Point Cheating Scandal
Description:
In April of 1976 it was found that there was a possibility that over half of the junior class at West
Point Academy had violated the West Point honor code by cheating on a case assignment. The honor
code states "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do." This was by far the
largest violation of the honor code in West Point history and presented some unusual challenges to
the administration. As the year dragged on it was found that more and more students possibly had
cheated on the assignment and was also becoming a public relations nightmare in the press and
internally to the Army branch of the United States military.

Being accepted and going to West Point is supposed to be an honor and a challenge. All that comes
along with this honor and discipline is the fact that they are there to do an important job for many
people. This would imply that it is correct to ask them to live to a higher standard than civilians as
well as their future subordinates and the scrapping of this code would put them into the same
grouping as any other students, and these people are not just any other students. It has been noted
that the standards of the entire Army are those of West Point.
Theory:
A good applicable theory involved in this case is that of legitimate power. In legitimate power
circumstances in the military you are ordered and described in detail exactly how to do every part of
your life, someone else is in control of how you are supposed to be and act. At West Point Academy
this holds very true. The reasoning behind the legitimacy, especially at a military academy, comes
from the fact that the people involved know what they are getting into and accept this.
At an academy you are being trained to someday be the one who will be the trainer and leader. If
you cannot follow through with procedures when and how told you will not be able to inflict these
procedures when you are in charge. The people who have gained this status have done so through a
series of steps

The responsibility administering the honor code was delegated to the cadets. This was known as the
cadet honor board. The honor board conducted investigations on cadets who were reported to have
violated the honor code. The honor board would decide on a person's guilt or incense by a board
vote. The results were then forwarded to the Commandant for his action. General Berry had his
concerns as to how the honor board functioned. He believed that giving student's authority to
investigate and determine the guilt or innocence of fellow cadets was not in the academy's best
interest. General Berry viewed the current system was flawed and time consuming. The faculty who
had a dislike for the Honor Board also influenced General Berry. He felt that in order to preserve the
academy's integrity. General Berry believed the Honor board should be eliminated from the process.
The challenge for General Berry was to overcome the pressure placed upon him to make a quick
decision. He had to make a decision which were acceptable to the cadets, the public and government
officials. General Berry had to make sure that his decision was based upon evidence and the
punishment if any was fair to the involved. The French–Raven and Kelman Overall Contingency of
Power Theory closely relates to the West Point Cheating Incident. It centers around three

Honor Code Dbq
In recent years, many schools and institutions have introduced an "honor code". The idea behind an
honor code is that, if a student is caught cheating or in violation of the honor code, then there are
serious consequences. Also, in some institutions, if a student catches another student violating the
honor code, then the students must turn in the violator. While in theory this sounds like a good plan,
many cases have shown that this code does not work in a practical application. Even with the
introduction of the honor code, many schools have found that students continue to cheat, and
students refuse to turn in their peers. Because of its ineffectiveness to work, the honor code should
be removed. Many schools and studies have found that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

While perhaps an honor code would have worked many many years ago, in modern times it is very
easy to bypass and avoid. In Source D, Philip Altbach discusses how the internet can be used to
make plagiarizing much more easy and simple to do. In the source, he says "The Internet provides
an inexhaustible source of information, and it's tempting to simply insert phrases directly into
reports." He also said "Plagiarism is more common now... it's just easier to do." In combination, it
becomes apparent just how easy it is to cheat and break the honor code. With the internet, access to
treasure troves of data and information is available in a matter of milliseconds. This cuts down on
the time necessary to get facts and information to write a paper, which is why it is so commonly
used. Because of the openness of the internet, it can becomes extremely difficult to regulate and
monitor the usage of it, leading to lots of plagiarism. The use of an honor code will do nothing to
stop the use of the internet to plagiarize. This is backed up in Source D, when it says " To find out
for sure, Bloomfield spent an afternoon programming a computer to spot repeated phrases." It took
Bloomfield an entire afternoon's worth of programming to catch all the cheaters in his class. The
average teacher will not have the knowledge to create a program that can detect similarities, so the
cheating will go unnoticed. This is why the honor code should be repealed, because it is outdated

America Places A Heavy Emphasis On The Crime Of Stealing
America places a heavy emphasis on the crime of stealing. Starting at a young age individuals are
taught that taking things that don't belong to you is wrong. Once these children enter academic
institutions, they learn that stealing does not just mean taking material objects, such as your friends
Go–Gurt, or candy from the corner store, it also applies to idea and thoughts. In other words,
intellectual property. Crimes involving intellectual property include, plagiarism, cheating on an
exam, and submitting work that is not your own. Academic institutions have waged war on
academic dishonesty through several methods, but the main combative tool they use is an honor
code. These honor codes act as contracts that students agree to, acknowledging that they will be
academically honest, not receive unauthorized aid, and so forth. These honor codes vary from
institution to institution. The Honor Code in use at Hofstra University is a prime example of a
classic honor code. However, to demonstrate the differences between honor codes we will also
analyze the honor codes in effect at The State University of New York (SUNY) and University of
Colorado Boulder (UC Boulder). The Hofstra University Honor Code appears to be short, but upon
reading, covers most of the issues involved with academic integrity.
As a member of the Hofstra community, I pledge to demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior in all
aspects of my life, both inside and out of the classroom. I understand that I am

The empowerment and enforcement of the code has always been up to the ethics committee which is
made up of cadets itself. This had always been to exert pressure on all students to comply with the
code by means of having to face your peers in hearings.
The one part of the honor code that was a staple of controversy was the end that says no cadet will
tolerate any action that violates the honor code. This implied that if you knew anything about a
violation that you were just as liable as the offender himself. This part of the code was troubling for
many considering you were dealing with comrades who were training next to you in close quarters
and with serious future implications. This can be a very precarious situation for many and by
holding students to it can promote more honor code violations. The problem here is the fact that
anyone can make mistakes and in the situations involving the honor code West Point has taken the
honor out of supporting your comrades as well as the honor of admitting to your mistakes. They
have done this by issuing expulsion to all violators. It can be said that someone who can admit to
their mistakes knowing the consequences that will ensue is of a stronger moral background than one
who may not violate the code in the first place or someone who does not get caught. (Note: the
current honor code allows for reacceptance to the academy after violations and

Many schools tend to have problems with cheating and trust between students and teachers. Many
schools have introduced honor codes which have either significantly improve these issues or have
had no effect. Honor codes, if effectively integrated and properly interpreted, can help my high
school minimize serious cheating, increase student morality, and improve trust. Honor codes can
help students become more honest and make the classroom less vulnerable to dishonesty. An online
article from the perspective of Alyssa Vangelli, a senator, establishes the way she perceived honor
codes by illustrating the idea that "reminders of these moral values [give the student] a responsibility
to perform honestly in the school environment" (Source B). Repetition ... Show more content on

An opinionated piece from McGabe, Donald, and Gary Pavela argue that, while any rule can be
made, it is the punishment that comes after it is broken that causes everyone to follow it. However,
since high schools cannot enforce a serious punishment that can truly teach students a lesson, the
only way to enforce an honor code is to have the students do it instead. Since students will act based
on what other students think of them, having the students enforcing the honor code will be the most
effective way of incorporating the honor codes (Source F). In order to get the students to enforce the
honor codes, the teachers must create a community within the classroom that includes a ratio that
has a greater number of honest to dishonest students. Since students are heavily influenced by their
peers, having the dishonest students be in a group with the honest student will discourage them to
cheat, since they know that their peers will judge them. Add in that no dishonest students can work
together and should be seated away from each other, and this will allow room for the honor code to
take effect and be integrated accordingly. One might argue, that putting honest students with
dishonest student will not work, because of the fact that cheating has already happened in schools
that are known to have strict honor codes, such as the University of Virginia, in which Chris Khan,
the author of the article "Pssst–How Do Ya Spell Plagiarism?" discovers, "Since last spring, 157
students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory. Thirty–
nine of those accused of violating the school's honor code have either dropped out or been expelled–
the only penalty available for such a crime" (Source D.) However, Khan overlooks that just because
an honor code is strict does not mean that it is effective in reducing cheating. If 157 students were

Honor and Poetry in a Bedouin Society
(Critique)
The book, Veiled Sentiments: Honor and Poetry in a Bedouin Society, by author and anthropologist,
Lila Abu–Lughod, who is best known for her work on women's issues in the middle east, presents
two years of fieldwork in Egypt among the Awlad' Ali Bedouin community who have gone from
living a nomadic lifestyle , a farming system where animals are transported from one area to another
in search for fresh grazing land, to living in villages where smuggling, raising animals, and doing
odd jobs are ways of supporting themselves. In the book, Abu–Lughod brings together the concepts
of structure, hierarchy, ideology, and discourse to illustrate the Bedouin culture, and how the ...

When reading Veiled Sentiments, I got the impression that the existing social hierarchy among the
Awlad' Ali was based on gender, age, wisdom, and wealth, "Women are always dependent," and "
the powerful have obligations and responsibilities to protect and care for the weak. The weaker
members epitomized by the helpless infant, and by extension all children. (p.80–81)" Abu– Lughod
did a good job depicting the ways that the social hierarchy works, by including terminology such as
wliyya, and by vividly describing situations where women, and children seemed weaker than the
adult males in the community, who in most situations appeared to be the head of households. The
author also goes further into the ideals of the Awlad' Ali by discussing the relations between female
modesty (hasham), "natural inferiority", and sexuality. She depicts the ideal woman in the eyes of
the Bedouin people, describing her as soft spoken, and "well–behaved," and with no open thoughts
on sexuality. Apart from discussing the importance of hasham in a woman, Abu– Lughod points out
that emotion of love and affection between men and women is a taboo. Men that show emotion
towards a woman are seen to be weak and are shunned upon by their male peers, as well as women
in the community. "Women claim, for instance, that "real men" control all their dependents and beat
their wives when the wives do stupid things ( p.89)". In

Use of the Bible in handling ethical dilemmas – As Christian, our morally right and wrongs comes
from the laws and teachings of the word of God. The scripture tells us in (Romans 15:4) "For
everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught

Are Honor Codes Necessary
Is an honor code necessary? In any circumstance where a person's integrity is tested, an honor code
is essential. Furthermore, an honor code will deter cheating and implement and embed integrity into
the school's culture. Regardless of the students who refute to confine themselves into the system, it
will ultimately influence everyone under the code. Students will generate a moral sense that weighs
the costs and benefits of cheating. With this in mind, I believe that my school should establish an
honor code considering that it profoundly influences the culture of the school, it contributes into
creating integrity as a habit, and it ensures a safe academic environment.
First, establishing an honor code will mold integrity into a social norm. Likewise, enforcing rules to
eliminate cheating and unoriginal content remarkably impacts the culture of the school. By
enforcing strict rules and punishments into the school's system, students gradually grow aware and
take pre–cautions. As a result, "peer culture [develops] on honor code campuses... [that makes]
cheating socially unacceptable"(source F). Though a handful of students may attempt to evade the
honor code, the new culture will lead them to be "embarrassed to have other students find ... Show

deem high school as any annoying obstacle rather than a period where they prepare themselves for

than " where they learn little of value"(source F). Furthermore, the honor code ensures the
development of integrity before college, when "violating the school's honor code [results] in either

Honor codes in an academic setting can have varied effects, but when executed successfully, they
can help to eliminate practices that are dishonest and cultivate trust and integrity among students
and teachers. Windham High School should adopt an honor code in order to promote an
environment of trust and integrity. Adopting an honor code can be a difficult process and relies
greatly on the integrity of the student and their values on cheating. For example, Source C delineates
a "feedback loop" on how an honor code can either create a "culture of dishonesty" or one of trust
and integrity. At the core of this feedback loop are the students and whether there are more
"cheaters" or honest students. While there are undoubtedly numerous "cheaters"

Code Of Honor In The Iliad
Throughout The Iliad, the heroic characters make decisions based on a definite set of principles,
which are referred to as the "code of honor." The heroic code that Homer presents to the reader is an
underlying cause for many of the events that take place, but many of the characters have different
perceptions of how highly the code should be regarded. Hektor, the greatest of the Trojan warriors,
begins the poem as the model of a Homeric hero. His dedication and strict belief in the code of
honor is illustrated many times throughout the course of The Iliad. An example of this is presented
in book three of the poem, where Hektor reprimands Paris for refusing to fight. He says to Paris,
"Surely now the flowing–haired Achains laugh ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

encounter," (6:327). Paris agrees that he has been dishonoring himself, and tells Hektor he will

outlining the battlefield with Astanax, their son.
When Andromache pleads with Hektor to stay home and cease fighting,
Hektor refuses, telling her that he would feel deep shame in front of the Trojans if he were to
withdraw himself from the war. Hektor then tells Andromache that the thought of her being dragged

Achains troubles him, but he is relieved by the knowledge that she will be looked at as "the wife of
Hektor, who was ever the bravest fighter of the Trojans, breakers of horses, in the days when they

Ilion," (6:460). This causes Andromache to shed tears. On the one hand, she understands Hektor's
beliefs and deep sense of morality, but on the other feels it is just as honorable to stay home and care
for one's family. This is a second place in which Hektor feels torn between two conflicting
responsibilities. A character's social status was mainly based upon his performance in the battlefield.
Achilleus is a tragic figure who believes strongly in social order, but questions the idea of fighting
for glory. When Aias and Odysseus are sent by Agamemnon to plead with Achilleus' to fight for the
Greeks, Achilleus denies them, saying "There

The Code Of The Honor Code
Rules and regulations have always been necessities within the society, especially in the educational
system; however, similar to the way we enforce rules to improve the students' actions, we must
provide standards that ethically better the students. By forming our own perspective on the honor
code, acknowledging that the efficiency of the honor code relies on the student bodies' compliance
to the expectations, and relating the honor code to free will, we have come to the conclusion that the
present honor code in our school, Robert Vela High School, needs to be revised. The solution is
quite simple, separate the rules and create a new honor code that comprises of expectations

It is true that many students may not do what is right in every situation, but everyone has a
conscience and will know that they failed someone in the process of their wrong doings. In the same
way that American citizens say the Pledge of Allegiance to honor the United States, schools should
too "...[pledge]...never to lie, cheat or steal" in order to allow the students to feel as if they are trying
to keep a promise rather than simply following a guideline (Source D). Overall, the honor code
should be seen as a moral expectation and not an ordinary combination of directives.
The most crucial part of establishing an effective honor code is to acknowledge that the students are
the ones who determine the level of its efficiency. Within the school system, there are always rules
that must be followed; however, a portion of the student population will not obey them. The honor
code needs to be separated from the rules in order to establish a set of standards that are a necessity
to build the "...type of environment [we] want to live in"(Source B). The culture of the students is
the enabler for the success of the honor code. Fundamentally, the honor code should be the
expectations that establish the setting of the school. Within schools today, there are many situations
in which a student is required to do an assignment in order to receive a passing grade. To many this
would urge them to complete the task, but to others

Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff's Old School
The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there
are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the
education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of
the students. However, the term 'honor' in the title 'honor code' is what people can occasionally take
issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question
the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff's Old
School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance
and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school's honor code because he
believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word 'honor'.
Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized
education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of
enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them,
students' cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would
be detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades
would make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to

Persuasive Essay On Honor Codes
Most likely, the majority of students have cheated at one point. In the moment, the student wants to
get a good grade on the test, but they do not know the answer and cheating pops into their head.
Then they will think of how to cheat successfully, without getting caught. They know that it is
against the rules and if they get caught the teacher will be let down, but they continue because it is
worth it, right? This dilemma has gone through almost every students head at least once in their
academic career. Schools have tried to correct this behavior by introducing honor codes that are not
always successful. Where in reality, the honor codes should be more focuses on the integrity of the
student, rather than forcing the student to fit the mold held by administration. Ideally, catching
cheaters and having a genuine learning space is the goal. As in the case of Virginia and Harvard
University, have enforced honor codes that implement a dismissal of cheating; the students at many
school around the US, see these rules as restrictive, which leads to the students not want to follow
these codes and seem rebellious (Source C) (Source D). Also, teenagers schedules are busy enough
as it is and desperate times call for desperate measures – even if that means cheating. Students,
especially in high school, do not have the time to do all the homework assigned to them, so they will

The Influence Of Honor Code
Honor codes and honor systems promote integrity to pervade throughout the student body. Although
it is absolutely necessary to establish rules that attack academic dishonesty, the idea that honor codes
will significantly impact the school's population of cheaters is ridiculous because of a student's
natural tendencies, new accessible technology, and kids yearning to bolster their social status.
Having students write or sign something stating that they won't cheat will not prevent cheating. It's
done in schools all over the country in the form of signed syllabuses, class discussions, and
preexisting honor systems, yet there are still those who are academically dishonest. There's an ever

The Code Of The Honor Code System
The honor code is a set of rules used by high schools and colleges to prevent the students from
cheating, stealing and plagiarizing. The honor code puts the responsibility of maintaining academic
integrity on the student's shoulders instead of those of the faculty. Ideally, this code works well
because the students are trusted, monitored and held accountable by their peers. Unfortunately, in
reality the honor code is not successful and actually allows for more cheating. Rockhurst High
school is better at preventing misconduct by enforcing stricter policies than the honor system. The
honor code should no longer be implemented in Rockhurst High School because it is not necessary.
The honor code system basically tells students that is up to them to decide whether it is acceptable to
cheat or not. Although, most people would hope that the students at Rockhurst possess enough
integrity to know that cheating is wrong, it only takes a few "cheater–types" to undermine the
"honest–types".(Source C). As Rutgers University professor Donald McCabe said "honor codes
don't always work. Their success depends on a culture of academic integrity". The students need to
have an expectation that cheating is not tolerated by their peers.
Unfortunately, the students at Rockhurst High school do tolerate cheating. Students in general are
not willing to peer–regulate one another. In a 2007–2008 survey of a small public university, of the
275 students only 8% said they would report a fellow

offered identify themselves as subject to the laws of a greater power, and neither are secular. In both
epics, the main theme is the unpredictability of human life. Life was based on the idea of strife and
turmoil for the Greeks, joy and misery were not distant from one another, and nobody is secure from
disaster.
Homeric Heroes live with an honor code which directs their behavior.
To the Homeric heroes, honor is essential so much so that life would be insignificant without it.
Thus, honor is more valuable than life itself. Knights Tale is meant to explain the code of chivalry
and honor. The Medieval culture was the purpose and formation of the chivalric code, a principle of
behavior that set not only proper forms of behavior but also suitable communications among it's
citizens. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cost of pride is the central moral of the tale. These risks are presented in several forms. We see
the pride of Hector. He knows that Achilles will win the battle against him, yet he decided to fight
him nevertheless. The result of this pride, lead to death and tragedy. In the Iliad, Homer describes
heroism as a victory on the battleground in which the desire to win and the call to aggressive action
represents courage. It is this courageous notion that links figures like Agamemnon, Achilles, Hektor,
Palamon, and Arcrite. Homer's "The Iliad" shows how the heroic code was deep–rooted in ancient
Greek soldiers. In many instances, the Greeks placed this code of honor above their lives. The heroic
ideal was supreme. The largest task for a man was heroism and valor while the worst was
cowardliness. Achilles personifies this heroic ideal in the

Honor Codes In Schools
Every person who enrolls in college feels like they are going to drown in essays, lab reports, and
math homework, right? So why do students instead of learning the material, writing down notes, and
studying choose to cheat and plagiarise instead? In a research study that is based on academic
integrity it seems that students in high school don't see the point in working hard in their classes,
because everyone "cheats" and once they move onto college those same habits stay with them
(McCabe). The impact of honor codes, when enforced correctly, make a huge difference in schools.
Most successful honor codes are usually student enforced in order to create a better learning
environment amongst their peers. However, although some students are willing to take the risk of
getting caught and reprimanded, most are in favor of honor codes. While honor code systems causes
a lot of distrust between students and their teachers, academic honor codes should be integrated into
school systems because it creates a more honest working environment .
Schools that have honor codes have reduced plagiarism and cheating among their student body,
creating a more trustworthy learning environment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Honor Codes: Hit or Miss? Honor codes are a set of rules or ethical principles governing a
community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community.
The use of an honor code depends on the belief that people can be trusted. Those who are violating
the honor code can be subject to punishment, including being expelled from the school. Schools
should maintain the use of honor codes so that dishonesty is deterred from. Honor codes are the
embodiment of two things – trust and integrity. When schools maintain these honor codes, it gives
off many advantages. "Unlike the majority of colleges where proctoring of tests and exams is the
responsibility of the faculty and/or administration, many schools with academic honor codes allow
students to take their exams without proctors present, relying on peer monitoring to control
cheating." (Source F) By allowing non–monitored tests, the honor code instills a better relationship
between staff and students. When a student is having a problem with the class, they will more likely
talk to the teacher rather than resort to copying. The code makes staff more trust worthy. ... Show

as a student, I have neither given nor received aid on this assignment/exam.' Students write this on

never to lie, cheat or steal." (Source D) By making students write this statement, it creates a false
sense of trust that can be abused. They are more likely to cheat because they think that no one will

Children sign an agreement contract that says if they break these rules they accept the punishments.

The Ethics Of Academic Integrity
Academic integrity continues to be an important issue of public concern especially in higher
education institutions. There are countless articles that report students cheating on examinations,
plagiarizing written assignments, and collaborating with others when such behavior is prohibited.
Conversely, there are reports of viable honor systems that have been implemented in schools that
make such unethical behavior less pervasive. Both of these extremes, beg the question whether an
honor code, such as the Stevens Honor System, is the most effective way to curb immoral behavior
and promote a high regard for honesty. As Henry David Thoreau makes it clear in his essay, "Civil
Disobedience," governments should not be allowed to impede on individuals' consciences and
behaviors. Thus, the honor code should only be a set of minimalistic rules that promote each
individual's personal integrity so they can act honorably based on their own conscience. It should
not however, in any way, legislate or seek to punish students for unlawfulness. By drawing from
Hsun Tzu's ideas in "Encouraging Learning," an honor code ought to be treated as a cornerstone on
which a foundation of moral and ethical academic behavior is built. Hsun Tzu, a Chinese
philosopher, poses many interesting points about the connection between learning and moral
behavior in shaping students into lawful citizens. The success of an honor code depends on the trust
it places in individuals' beliefs and how they are applied to

Student Code Of Professional Responsibility
As members of Western College of Law, and, moreover, as members of the legal and academic
communities, students must hold themselves to the highest standards of ethical behavior. An
individual whose actions impugn the integrity of his self or herself necessarily impugn the integrity
of the institutions and communities in which they are permitted membership. Moreover, those who
would practice law have a sworn duty to the People, who must trust in the honor and integrity of
their legal advocates and representatives. If the People lose faith in the law, the law loses its efficacy

these students most likely are just not as informed of the student code rules. Educating students most
likely are just not as informed of the student code rules. Educating students on the honors code is an
important job and should have been taught to students from the beginning. However, only 65% of
students report ever being taught the honors code (Sledge and Pringle). This number is very low
considering how every student should have been taught the codes. Re–education on the honor codes

Are Honor Codes at a University Level Effective in Maintaining Academic Integrity?
Issue Question
The issue I am interested in exploring is whether or not honor codes at a university level are
effective in maintaining the integrity and academic honesty of their students. The issue is of interest
to university administrators, faculty, and other employees, as well as students and
education_______. While some argue that honor codes enforced by university administrators are the
best or only way to enforce discipline in academic honesty, many argue that there are other solutions
to this problem such as workshops, student governed programs, or peer–enforced honor codes.
Today, the argument between the two groups continues to thrive and grow while a number of studies
and experiments are being carried out.

Constantly, high schools, such as Lopez High School, have reported severe percentages of cheating,
misbehavior, and dishonesty. For this reason, Lopez High School, among other schools, should
establish and maintain an honor code within them. Providing an honor code will help reduce the
percentage of cheating with the classrooms. Along with, constantly reminding the students' of their
''moral values and responsibility'' to perform with honesty (Vangelli). Also by enforcing the honor
codes at Lopez High Schools, the students' integrity to live and work in an honest and safe
environment will significantly increase. Punishments for failure to ensue the honor code should be
enhanced frequently to reduce the percentage of misbehavior within the school. Furthermore, if
schools follow and create an honor code it will improve the school's reputation by gaining respect of
other schools and its peers. Cheating has always been a controversial issue at a variety of high
schools and colleges, including Lopez High School. "Requirements for students to write a pledge of

Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes
In numerous colleges, students have minimal awareness about their honor codes and the
punishments that correlate with violating that academic agreement. Susan Greenburg, author of
"Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes", discusses the issues behind having an honor code and
why colleges should no longer have this practice. She addresses the conflict in Stanford University,
where students in a computer science class spring up attention on whether the code is still an
appropriate use today. These students enrolled in the course were under questioning about their
academic dishonesty and received harsh discipline in a class and future occupational field that
involves collaboration with others daily. For some, the honor code is unfair considering ... Show

She reviews how educators can be very strict on enforcing honor–codes, but students have trouble
understanding the line between original, individual work vs. plagiarized, group work. "As a
journalism instructor, I have encouraged students to work together in ways that other honor–code–
bound professors would deem "unpermitted collaboration––..." Teachers all have their own rule
about plagiarism violations and explain to students the punishment they face if caught. Even though
students received discipline in this one computer science class at Stanford University does not mean
all instructors at honor–code schools are as rigorous when it comes to collaboration work among
their students. Not every college upholds the same conduct when someone has been found at fault;
every situation is different. The way one school approaches the situation may not be the way another
school does. "Further, rates of overall cheating at honor–code schools rose slightly between the
1990–1991 and 2005–2006 school years, while they declined at no–code schools. As McCabe
writes, the influence of honor codes "has eroded over the past two decades." Greenburg includes no
explanation why this decline and rise happened to farther her argument. Not enough anti–plagiarism
encouragement methods in the schools could be a reason for the rise. Her connection of the two
schools does not necessarily mean that

Defining Heroism
Heroes, despite their extraneous characteristics, have very similar values to the people that follow
them. This point of view can best be explained using three key points of focus. These points are as
follows: The similarity of a higher guidance in times of need, the similarity of the code of honor that
they live by, and the fact that no matter who the hero is, he or she is under pressure to be a
successful role model.
The similarity of higher guidance in times of need is the easiest and most direct of all the three
factors. Most heroes, but not all, live their lives in allegiance to God or another worshiped figure.
Take the story of Beowulf for example. Beowulf was without fear when he faced the monster known
as Grendel. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe the correct view on the subject is that no matter who you are, you are still God's love and
servant. This unites every class, as long as they chose to believe it.
Another communal characteristic of heroes and those who follow them is the fact that everyone
lives by a code of honor. Heroes live by a higher code of honor than those who follow them. For
heroes, their actions must either all be in accordance with the rules set by their master, or greatly
excel the expectations that are held for others. Going out of their way at every possible instance is
considered mandatory. The main point of all of this is not that they actually do all these things, but
that they proudly enjoy performing the tasks given to them. Everyday people are the same, just less
intense. Everyone has a code of honor. Some have a higher level than others. One person may live
by a code of honor consisting of no regulations at all. Another could live by the regulations that they
can't go against the bible, can't break the law, and occasionally have to try to be nice to people. In
another case, a person could see the minimum code of conduct in their life being to live their life in
the footsteps of God, obey all laws, and do every possible act of humanity and good will that they
can. The point is that no matter who the subject is, be it hero or zero, everyone has a code of conduct
that they chose to live by

Trust at Xavier is a very important issue. In order for Xavier to trust me I have to have trust in others
and myself. Xavier has to trust me from the day I enter their school until the day of graduate.
Honesty is the key to trust for it will set me free from cheating, lying ,

trust them I will get into bad situations. I should have a close relationship with Xavier and myself so

experiences are good or bad it will give me a chance to learn from my mistakes. By experiencing
things I can learn more about myself. In college I have the freedom to do anything I want, but I
shouldn't take it lightly. The honor code will teach me not to have too much freedom and how to

Pavela from Source F, Vangelli argues that a simple revision of an honor code system benefited the

advocated revision to the honor code increases the amount of students that passed the honor code of
their own accord which prevents the honor code from being forced upon the students as another set
of generic rules. Now, this is not to say that this single revision can fix all of the complex issues that
the honor code system fails to address but, this revision would draw more support behind the honor
code system which would help maintain its success. Vangelli later reaffirms her claim when she
describes the positive impacts of the revision to the honor code system when she states that,
"Another turning point occurred when students began to examine the role of an honor code as
something other than a new set of rules to obey... the real question was what type of environment we
wanted to live in"(Source B). In other words, Vangelli believes that the revision in the honor code

Honor Codes In Schools
My position on the honor codes within a school system is that they can be beneficial during certain
circumstances. I say this becuase honor codes are guidelines that usually are not enforced with more
consequences behind them rather than morals. They are sometimes enforced with a pledge filled out
with a signature but those who create the pledge fail to understand that the signature is on a sheet of
paper that will deteriorate and has no moral value behind it in order to enhance its importance. An
honor code is a necessity in a school that is trying to be an exemplary school which all schools
should be striving to be. On the other hand it may cause many problems restricting students of their
feeling of freedom because an honor code provides restraints and if the student body feels rebellious
because of those restraints then they will begin to disregard the honor code thus giving no value in
morals or importance to that education facility. Another issue with an honor code is that ... Show

Even if the school implements consequences they soon become meaningless and they usually result
in the student being even worse off than before. The problem with that is there aren't many
consequences that can be given that do not interfere with the students rights within the school
system. Which is why many honor codes are based on morales but even so you cannot make an
honor code based on morales without teaching morale importance in the classroom. To successfully
implement an honor code you must set up a system where morals are being taught throughout the
day within the classrooms as well as the lessons, and ensure that you have a code that helps to
implement these morales into everyday things for the students. Until such a code is implemented I
will stand on my belief that an honor code is completely unnecessary and a simple waste of time if

Academic Honesty
In reading and researching the topic of academic honesty and integrity I have found that there are
varying views on what is considered cheating, and that cheating occurs in all academic levels and
fields of study. Interestingly business students do not believe that cheating is as serious as students
in other fields. I also found that there are many parties that are responsible for teaching students why
academic honesty and integrity are so important. The key to teaching this important value is to start
when children enter the educational system and for higher education learning institutions to continue
the expectation and education of honesty and integrity.

They are required to take religion classes. Maybe they have better moral values than students at
secular universities and colleges.
So a key question regarding academic honesty and integrity is, whose job is it to teach honesty and
integrity in an academic setting? Hall and Kuth (1998) suggest that "an academic honor code will
not have the intended effect without the endorsement of and widespread support by the faculty."
(p.13). Research by Hall and Kuth (1998) also indicates it is the responsibility of the institution to
"promote the importance of academic integrity, clearly articulate their academic integrity policies,
disseminate these policies widely, discuss the policies frequently, and have systematic procedures in
place for addressing related issues (McCabe & Trevino, 1993)." (p.13)
I do not believe it is the colleges and universities alone that need to teach honesty and integrity.
They need to implement courses and policies and codes. They need to expect students to follow
these codes and policies, and should have a clear cut system to make sure they are being abided by.
The consequences of breaking these rules of honest conduct should be dealt with immediately and
fairly. But teaching an important characteristic like honesty needs to start before one goes to college.

The Honor Code

  • 1. The Honor Code 2. A large subsection of cosmopolitanism is the power of external public shaming, and the power of shame to shape the behaviors of cultures. This is also the part of cosmopolitanism which can be applied more broadly to societies than to individuals. In his book, The Honor Code, Appiah offers various examples about the connected roles which shame and honor have respectively in guiding the morality of different cultures, and how these influences change over time through external forces which evaluate and judge the practices of that particular society. The reason he gives for honor having enough weight to influence behavior to such an extent is "our deep and persistent concern with status and respect, our human need for what Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel called Anerkennung¬–¬recognition" (Honor xiii). This theory about honor connects to a psychological notion that human beings are social creatures and depend on social connections and interactions for a large part of our own self worth. Appiah goes on to say that "we human beings need others to respond appropriately to who we are and to what we do. We need others to recognize us as conscious and to acknowledge that we recognize them" (Honor xiii). Not only do humans need to be recognized, but we must also have our actions affirmed, a theory which Appiah applies not only to individuals, but to collective honor as well. a. This idea of honor is not entirely removed from his cosmopolitan standards concerning morals, and Appiah ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. What Makes A Family? As a leader, I have five core values that matter most to me; having a family, maintaining order(tranquility), meaningful work, growth, and truth. I strongly believe in each one of these components. Having a family is so important because they are a main support system. Family doesn't have to be someone who is blood related. Family can be anyone who you feel means a lot to you and supports you. Maintaining order(tranquility) is important because in the work place, you need to have organization of some sort. With order, everything will simply fall into place. Meaningful work describes itself. If what you're doing isn't meaningful to you then why are you doing it? Growth is a key component because the point of doing something is hopefully to reach a goal that you have set for yourself. You should aim to keep growing to eventually reach your goals. Finally, truth is another very important value that I have. I believe truth can bring you happiness. If you are living your life with lies on your mind you will never be content. Altogether, these five components make up my list of most important personal values. As my team, you will first work individually to come up with your own ideas. It is important to brainstorm on your own to see what your own mind can come up with. You would be surprised how much you can think of on your own if you really try. Next, you will all come together as a team and share your individual ideas. I believe that by working as a team you are able to come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. West Point Cheating Scandal Case Study West Point Cheating Scandal Description: In April of 1976 it was found that there was a possibility that over half of the junior class at West Point Academy had violated the West Point honor code by cheating on a case assignment. The honor code states "A cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do." This was by far the largest violation of the honor code in West Point history and presented some unusual challenges to the administration. As the year dragged on it was found that more and more students possibly had cheated on the assignment and was also becoming a public relations nightmare in the press and internally to the Army branch of the United States military. The honor code at West Point was pointed and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being accepted and going to West Point is supposed to be an honor and a challenge. All that comes along with this honor and discipline is the fact that they are there to do an important job for many people. This would imply that it is correct to ask them to live to a higher standard than civilians as well as their future subordinates and the scrapping of this code would put them into the same grouping as any other students, and these people are not just any other students. It has been noted that the standards of the entire Army are those of West Point. Theory: A good applicable theory involved in this case is that of legitimate power. In legitimate power circumstances in the military you are ordered and described in detail exactly how to do every part of your life, someone else is in control of how you are supposed to be and act. At West Point Academy this holds very true. The reasoning behind the legitimacy, especially at a military academy, comes from the fact that the people involved know what they are getting into and accept this. At an academy you are being trained to someday be the one who will be the trainer and leader. If you cannot follow through with procedures when and how told you will not be able to inflict these procedures when you are in charge. The people who have gained this status have done so through a series of steps ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

West Point Cheating Incident Essay West Cheating Incident Case Running Head: West Point Cheating Incident Case Submitted By: Warren Frazier For: Advanced Organizational Behavior 1 April 2014 West Point Cheating Case Description The success of a major corporation depends primarily on the development and completion of its mission statement. In order to achieve success, make profits and remain competitive in today's market. Most organizations accomplish its mission by hiring personnel with high integrity, trustworthy, and dedication. Organizations are proven to be more productive when there are employees who are totally committed to helping the company commitment for success. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The responsibility administering the honor code was delegated to the cadets. This was known as the cadet honor board. The honor board conducted investigations on cadets who were reported to have violated the honor code. The honor board would decide on a person's guilt or incense by a board vote. The results were then forwarded to the Commandant for his action. General Berry had his concerns as to how the honor board functioned. He believed that giving student's authority to investigate and determine the guilt or innocence of fellow cadets was not in the academy's best interest. General Berry viewed the current system was flawed and time consuming. The faculty who had a dislike for the Honor Board also influenced General Berry. He felt that in order to preserve the academy's integrity. General Berry believed the Honor board should be eliminated from the process. The challenge for General Berry was to overcome the pressure placed upon him to make a quick decision. He had to make a decision which were acceptable to the cadets, the public and government officials. General Berry had to make sure that his decision was based upon evidence and the punishment if any was fair to the involved. The French–Raven and Kelman Overall Contingency of Power Theory closely relates to the West Point Cheating Incident. It centers around three components of Power. • 9. Honor Code Dbq In recent years, many schools and institutions have introduced an "honor code". The idea behind an honor code is that, if a student is caught cheating or in violation of the honor code, then there are serious consequences. Also, in some institutions, if a student catches another student violating the honor code, then the students must turn in the violator. While in theory this sounds like a good plan, many cases have shown that this code does not work in a practical application. Even with the introduction of the honor code, many schools have found that students continue to cheat, and students refuse to turn in their peers. Because of its ineffectiveness to work, the honor code should be removed. Many schools and studies have found that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While perhaps an honor code would have worked many many years ago, in modern times it is very easy to bypass and avoid. In Source D, Philip Altbach discusses how the internet can be used to make plagiarizing much more easy and simple to do. In the source, he says "The Internet provides an inexhaustible source of information, and it's tempting to simply insert phrases directly into reports." He also said "Plagiarism is more common now... it's just easier to do." In combination, it becomes apparent just how easy it is to cheat and break the honor code. With the internet, access to treasure troves of data and information is available in a matter of milliseconds. This cuts down on the time necessary to get facts and information to write a paper, which is why it is so commonly used. Because of the openness of the internet, it can becomes extremely difficult to regulate and monitor the usage of it, leading to lots of plagiarism. The use of an honor code will do nothing to stop the use of the internet to plagiarize. This is backed up in Source D, when it says " To find out for sure, Bloomfield spent an afternoon programming a computer to spot repeated phrases." It took Bloomfield an entire afternoon's worth of programming to catch all the cheaters in his class. The average teacher will not have the knowledge to create a program that can detect similarities, so the cheating will go unnoticed. This is why the honor code should be repealed, because it is outdated and can easily be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. America Places A Heavy Emphasis On The Crime Of Stealing America places a heavy emphasis on the crime of stealing. Starting at a young age individuals are taught that taking things that don't belong to you is wrong. Once these children enter academic institutions, they learn that stealing does not just mean taking material objects, such as your friends Go–Gurt, or candy from the corner store, it also applies to idea and thoughts. In other words, intellectual property. Crimes involving intellectual property include, plagiarism, cheating on an exam, and submitting work that is not your own. Academic institutions have waged war on academic dishonesty through several methods, but the main combative tool they use is an honor code. These honor codes act as contracts that students agree to, acknowledging that they will be academically honest, not receive unauthorized aid, and so forth. These honor codes vary from institution to institution. The Honor Code in use at Hofstra University is a prime example of a classic honor code. However, to demonstrate the differences between honor codes we will also analyze the honor codes in effect at The State University of New York (SUNY) and University of Colorado Boulder (UC Boulder). The Hofstra University Honor Code appears to be short, but upon reading, covers most of the issues involved with academic integrity. As a member of the Hofstra community, I pledge to demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior in all aspects of my life, both inside and out of the classroom. I understand that I am ... This had always been to exert pressure on all students to comply with the code by means of having to face your peers in hearings. The one part of the honor code that was a staple of controversy was the end that says no cadet will tolerate any action that violates the honor code. This implied that if you knew anything about a violation that you were just as liable as the offender himself. This part of the code was troubling for many considering you were dealing with comrades who were training next to you in close quarters and with serious future implications. This can be a very precarious situation for many and by holding students to it can promote more honor code violations. The problem here is the fact that anyone can make mistakes and in the situations involving the honor code West Point has taken the honor out of supporting your comrades as well as the honor of admitting to your mistakes. They have done this by issuing expulsion to all violators. It can be said that someone who can admit to their mistakes knowing the consequences that will ensue is of a stronger moral background than one who may not violate the code in the first place or someone who does not get caught. • 15. Honor Codes Dbq Many schools tend to have problems with cheating and trust between students and teachers. Many schools have introduced honor codes which have either significantly improve these issues or have had no effect. Honor codes, if effectively integrated and properly interpreted, can help my high school minimize serious cheating, increase student morality, and improve trust. Honor codes can help students become more honest and make the classroom less vulnerable to dishonesty. An online article from the perspective of Alyssa Vangelli, a senator, establishes the way she perceived honor codes by illustrating the idea that "reminders of these moral values [give the student] a responsibility to perform honestly in the school environment" (Source B). Repetition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An opinionated piece from McGabe, Donald, and Gary Pavela argue that, while any rule can be made, it is the punishment that comes after it is broken that causes everyone to follow it. However, since high schools cannot enforce a serious punishment that can truly teach students a lesson, the only way to enforce an honor code is to have the students do it instead. Since students will act based on what other students think of them, having the students enforcing the honor code will be the most effective way of incorporating the honor codes (Source F). In order to get the students to enforce the honor codes, the teachers must create a community within the classroom that includes a ratio that has a greater number of honest to dishonest students. Since students are heavily influenced by their peers, having the dishonest students be in a group with the honest student will discourage them to cheat, since they know that their peers will judge them. Add in that no dishonest students can work together and should be seated away from each other, and this will allow room for the honor code to take effect and be integrated accordingly. One might argue, that putting honest students with dishonest student will not work, because of the fact that cheating has already happened in schools that are known to have strict honor codes, such as the University of Virginia, in which Chris Khan, the author of the article "Pssst–How Do Ya Spell Plagiarism?" discovers, "Since last spring, 157 students have been investigated by their peers in the largest cheating scandal in memory. Thirty– nine of those accused of violating the school's honor code have either dropped out or been expelled– the only penalty available for such a crime" (Source D.) However, Khan overlooks that just because an honor code is strict does not mean that it is effective in reducing cheating. If 157 students were willing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The weaker members epitomized by the helpless infant, and by extension all children. (p.80–81)" Abu– Lughod did a good job depicting the ways that the social hierarchy works, by including terminology such as wliyya, and by vividly describing situations where women, and children seemed weaker than the adult males in the community, who in most situations appeared to be the head of households. The author also goes further into the ideals of the Awlad' Ali by discussing the relations between female modesty (hasham), "natural inferiority", and sexuality. She depicts the ideal woman in the eyes of the Bedouin people, describing her as soft spoken, and "well–behaved," and with no open thoughts on sexuality. Apart from discussing the importance of hasham in a woman, Abu– Lughod points out that emotion of love and affection between men and women is a taboo. Men that show emotion towards a woman are seen to be weak and are shunned upon by their male peers, as well as women in the community. "Women claim, for instance, that "real men" control all their dependents and beat their wives when the wives do stupid things ( p.89)". In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Are Honor Codes Necessary Is an honor code necessary? In any circumstance where a person's integrity is tested, an honor code is essential. Furthermore, an honor code will deter cheating and implement and embed integrity into the school's culture. Regardless of the students who refute to confine themselves into the system, it will ultimately influence everyone under the code. Students will generate a moral sense that weighs the costs and benefits of cheating. With this in mind, I believe that my school should establish an honor code considering that it profoundly influences the culture of the school, it contributes into creating integrity as a habit, and it ensures a safe academic environment. First, establishing an honor code will mold integrity into a social norm. Likewise, enforcing rules to eliminate cheating and unoriginal content remarkably impacts the culture of the school. By enforcing strict rules and punishments into the school's system, students gradually grow aware and take pre–cautions. As a result, "peer culture [develops] on honor code campuses... • 27. Code Of Honor In The Iliad Throughout The Iliad, the heroic characters make decisions based on a definite set of principles, which are referred to as the "code of honor." The heroic code that Homer presents to the reader is an underlying cause for many of the events that take place, but many of the characters have different perceptions of how highly the code should be regarded. Hektor, the greatest of the Trojan warriors, begins the poem as the model of a Homeric hero. His dedication and strict belief in the code of honor is illustrated many times throughout the course of The Iliad. An example of this is presented in book three of the poem, where Hektor reprimands Paris for refusing to fight. He says to Paris, "Surely now the flowing–haired Achains laugh ... Hektor then goes to find Andromache, who is standing by the walls outlining the battlefield with Astanax, their son. When Andromache pleads with Hektor to stay home and cease fighting, Hektor refuses, telling her that he would feel deep shame in front of the Trojans if he were to withdraw himself from the war. Hektor then tells Andromache that the thought of her being dragged off by the Achains troubles him, but he is relieved by the knowledge that she will be looked at as "the wife of Hektor, who was ever the bravest fighter of the Trojans, breakers of horses, in the days when they fought about Ilion," (6:460). This causes Andromache to shed tears. On the one hand, she understands Hektor's beliefs and deep sense of morality, but on the other feels it is just as honorable to stay home and care for one's family. This is a second place in which Hektor feels torn between two conflicting responsibilities. A character's social status was mainly based upon his performance in the battlefield. Achilleus is a tragic figure who believes strongly in social order, but questions the idea of fighting for glory. When Aias and Odysseus are sent by Agamemnon to plead with Achilleus' to fight for the Greeks, Achilleus denies them, saying "There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Code Of The Honor Code Rules and regulations have always been necessities within the society, especially in the educational system; however, similar to the way we enforce rules to improve the students' actions, we must provide standards that ethically better the students. By forming our own perspective on the honor code, acknowledging that the efficiency of the honor code relies on the student bodies' compliance to the expectations, and relating the honor code to free will, we have come to the conclusion that the present honor code in our school, Robert Vela High School, needs to be revised. Overall, the honor code should be seen as a moral expectation and not an ordinary combination of directives. The most crucial part of establishing an effective honor code is to acknowledge that the students are the ones who determine the level of its efficiency. Within the school system, there are always rules that must be followed; however, a portion of the student population will not obey them. The honor code needs to be separated from the rules in order to establish a set of standards that are a necessity to build the "...type of environment [we] want to live in"(Source B). • 31. Honor Codes In Tobias Wolff's Old School The existence of honor codes has had basis in helping students learn since their inception, but there are still those who object to their very definition. Nearly every institution centered around the education of children has some sort of code of conduct or set of rules in place for the betterment of the students. However, the term 'honor' in the title 'honor code' is what people can occasionally take issue with, as the term often implies a much more respectful idea. This issue leads one to question the purpose of honor codes. Although honor codes, like that of the school in Tobias Wolff's Old School, exist for the purpose of bettering the students by ensuring that they all have an equal chance and that they all do their own work, Mr. Ramsey objects to his school's honor code because he believes in a much more personal and valuable meaning of the word 'honor'. Honor codes and codes of conduct have existed for about as long as systems of institutionalized education have, as they exist for the betterment of the students. Honor codes often consist of a set of enumerated standards that the aforementioned institution holds its students to. Without them, students' cheating would go unregulated, which would overall just harm themselves, since it would be detrimental to their learning experience. The use of outside advantage to garner better grades would make it harder for the students to gain the help that they need, as well as allowing students to proceed without actually ... • 33. Persuasive Essay On Honor Codes Most likely, the majority of students have cheated at one point. In the moment, the student wants to get a good grade on the test, but they do not know the answer and cheating pops into their head. Then they will think of how to cheat successfully, without getting caught. They know that it is against the rules and if they get caught the teacher will be let down, but they continue because it is worth it, right? This dilemma has gone through almost every students head at least once in their academic career. Schools have tried to correct this behavior by introducing honor codes that are not always successful. Where in reality, the honor codes should be more focuses on the integrity of the student, rather than forcing the student to fit the mold held by administration. Ideally, catching cheaters and having a genuine learning space is the goal. As in the case of Virginia and Harvard University, have enforced honor codes that implement a dismissal of cheating; the students at many school around the US, see these rules as restrictive, which leads to the students not want to follow these codes and seem rebellious (Source C) (Source D). The honor code puts the responsibility of maintaining academic integrity on the student's shoulders instead of those of the faculty. Ideally, this code works well because the students are trusted, monitored and held accountable by their peers. Unfortunately, in reality the honor code is not successful and actually allows for more cheating. Rockhurst High school is better at preventing misconduct by enforcing stricter policies than the honor system. The honor code should no longer be implemented in Rockhurst High School because it is not necessary. The honor code system basically tells students that is up to them to decide whether it is acceptable to cheat or not. Although, most people would hope that the students at Rockhurst possess enough integrity to know that cheating is wrong, it only takes a few "cheater–types" to undermine the "honest–types".(Source C). The Iliad and The Knight's Tale accounts of social orders and cultures are similar in the sense that the social rules offered identify themselves as subject to the laws of a greater power, and neither are secular. So why do students instead of learning the material, writing down notes, and studying choose to cheat and plagiarise instead? In a research study that is based on academic integrity it seems that students in high school don't see the point in working hard in their classes, because everyone "cheats" and once they move onto college those same habits stay with them (McCabe). The impact of honor codes, when enforced correctly, make a huge difference in schools. Most successful honor codes are usually student enforced in order to create a better learning environment amongst their peers. However, although some students are willing to take the risk of getting caught and reprimanded, most are in favor of honor codes. • 49. The Ethics Of Academic Integrity Academic integrity continues to be an important issue of public concern especially in higher education institutions. There are countless articles that report students cheating on examinations, plagiarizing written assignments, and collaborating with others when such behavior is prohibited. Conversely, there are reports of viable honor systems that have been implemented in schools that make such unethical behavior less pervasive. Both of these extremes, beg the question whether an honor code, such as the Stevens Honor System, is the most effective way to curb immoral behavior and promote a high regard for honesty. As Henry David Thoreau makes it clear in his essay, "Civil Disobedience," governments should not be allowed to impede on individuals' consciences and behaviors. Thus, the honor code should only be a set of minimalistic rules that promote each individual's personal integrity so they can act honorably based on their own conscience. It should not however, in any way, legislate or seek to punish students for unlawfulness. By drawing from Hsun Tzu's ideas in "Encouraging Learning," an honor code ought to be treated as a cornerstone on which a foundation of moral and ethical academic behavior is built. • 59. Honor Code Essay Are Honor Codes at a University Level Effective in Maintaining Academic Integrity? Issue Question The issue I am interested in exploring is whether or not honor codes at a university level are effective in maintaining the integrity and academic honesty of their students. The issue is of interest to university administrators, faculty, and other employees, as well as students and education_______. While some argue that honor codes enforced by university administrators are the best or only way to enforce discipline in academic honesty, many argue that there are other solutions to this problem such as workshops, student governed programs, or peer–enforced honor codes. Today, the argument between the two groups continues to thrive and grow while a number of studies and experiments are being carried out. Methods I initially began my search for sources by using the website Lili.org. This site contained different scholarly articles that pertained to the subject I was studying and led me to further investigation. Through this website, I was led to EBSCO and Academic Search Premiere, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This article then gives directions and ideas on continued assessments that can be done at universities and colleges to further the study of academic integrity. • 61. Essay On Honor Code Constantly, high schools, such as Lopez High School, have reported severe percentages of cheating, misbehavior, and dishonesty. For this reason, Lopez High School, among other schools, should establish and maintain an honor code within them. Providing an honor code will help reduce the percentage of cheating with the classrooms. Along with, constantly reminding the students' of their ''moral values and responsibility'' to perform with honesty (Vangelli). Also by enforcing the honor codes at Lopez High Schools, the students' integrity to live and work in an honest and safe environment will significantly increase. Punishments for failure to ensue the honor code should be enhanced frequently to reduce the percentage of misbehavior within the school. Furthermore, if schools follow and create an honor code it will improve the school's reputation by gaining respect of other schools and its peers. Cheating has always been a controversial issue at a variety of high schools and colleges, including Lopez High School. "Requirements for students to write a pledge of honor" every time they submit an assignment to their designated teacher should be enforced (Vangelli). This would result in the student conscious being more subjective to "behave honestly" and be "responsibly at all times" (Vangelli). If Lopez High School follows and enforces these ... • 63. Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes In numerous colleges, students have minimal awareness about their honor codes and the punishments that correlate with violating that academic agreement. Susan Greenburg, author of "Why Colleges Should Ditch Honor Codes", discusses the issues behind having an honor code and why colleges should no longer have this practice. She addresses the conflict in Stanford University, where students in a computer science class spring up attention on whether the code is still an appropriate use today. These students enrolled in the course were under questioning about their academic dishonesty and received harsh discipline in a class and future occupational field that involves collaboration with others daily. For some, the honor code is unfair considering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She reviews how educators can be very strict on enforcing honor–codes, but students have trouble understanding the line between original, individual work vs. plagiarized, group work. "As a journalism instructor, I have encouraged students to work together in ways that other honor–code– bound professors would deem "unpermitted collaboration––..." Teachers all have their own rule about plagiarism violations and explain to students the punishment they face if caught. Even though students received discipline in this one computer science class at Stanford University does not mean all instructors at honor–code schools are as rigorous when it comes to collaboration work among their students. Not every college upholds the same conduct when someone has been found at fault; every situation is different. The way one school approaches the situation may not be the way another school does. "Further, rates of overall cheating at honor–code schools rose slightly between the 1990–1991 and 2005–2006 school years, while they declined at no–code schools. As McCabe writes, the influence of honor codes "has eroded over the past two decades." Greenburg includes no explanation why this decline and rise happened to farther her argument. Not enough anti–plagiarism encouragement methods in the schools could be a reason for the rise. Her connection of the two schools does not necessarily mean that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. Defining Heroism Heroes, despite their extraneous characteristics, have very similar values to the people that follow them. This point of view can best be explained using three key points of focus. These points are as follows: The similarity of a higher guidance in times of need, the similarity of the code of honor that they live by, and the fact that no matter who the hero is, he or she is under pressure to be a successful role model. The similarity of higher guidance in times of need is the easiest and most direct of all the three factors. Most heroes, but not all, live their lives in allegiance to God or another worshiped figure. Take the story of Beowulf for example. Beowulf was without fear when he faced the monster known as Grendel. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe the correct view on the subject is that no matter who you are, you are still God's love and servant. This unites every class, as long as they chose to believe it. Another communal characteristic of heroes and those who follow them is the fact that everyone lives by a code of honor. Heroes live by a higher code of honor than those who follow them. For heroes, their actions must either all be in accordance with the rules set by their master, or greatly excel the expectations that are held for others. Going out of their way at every possible instance is considered mandatory. The main point of all of this is not that they actually do all these things, but that they proudly enjoy performing the tasks given to them. Everyday people are the same, just less intense. Everyone has a code of honor. Some have a higher level than others. One person may live by a code of honor consisting of no regulations at all. Another could live by the regulations that they can't go against the bible, can't break the law, and occasionally have to try to be nice to people. In another case, a person could see the minimum code of conduct in their life being to live their life in the footsteps of God, obey all laws, and do every possible act of humanity and good will that they can. The point is that no matter who the subject is, be it hero or zero, everyone has a code of conduct that they chose to live by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Honor Code Dbq My high school's honor code system must be revised to incorporate the students' input to prevent the cheating that harms the integrity and the future success of my peers. By revising the honor code system, students will have a greater incentive to uphold the honor code and create a safe environment. With a University like Harvard that has the esteemed status as an Ivy League university, one would presume that Harvard would have a fairly progressive honor code system to address the growing issue that is plagiarism. In Source C, Jennifer Dirmeyer and Alexander Cartwright display that even the most prestigious universities such as Harvard are plagued with cheating when Dirmeyer and Cartwright state that, "The possibility that 125 Harvard students ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Source B, Alyssa Vangelli explains the importance of revisions to the approval of the honor code system at the high school she attends, Lawrence Academy, when she states, "The revised pledge of honor also helped gain student approval for the honor code"(Source B). Much like McCabe and Pavela from Source F, Vangelli argues that a simple revision of an honor code system benefited the student body and the faculty. I wholeheartedly endorse what Vangelli argues because a student advocated revision to the honor code increases the amount of students that passed the honor code of their own accord which prevents the honor code from being forced upon the students as another set of generic rules. Now, this is not to say that this single revision can fix all of the complex issues that the honor code system fails to address but, this revision would draw more support behind the honor code system which would help maintain its success. Vangelli later reaffirms her claim when she describes the positive impacts of the revision to the honor code system when she states that, "Another turning point occurred when students began to examine the role of an honor code as something other than a new set of rules to obey... the real question was what type of environment we wanted to live in"(Source B). • 71. The Importance Of Honor Code Honor Code Do you believe that it is important to have an honor code in your school? An academic honor code or honor system is a set of rules or ethical principles governing an academic community based on ideals that define what constitutes honorable behavior within that community. I believe that Fairmont Heights High School should not have a honor code, because the administration will not enforce the policy, the students will not obey it, and it will be a distraction to schools.. • 73. Honor Codes In Schools My position on the honor codes within a school system is that they can be beneficial during certain circumstances. I say this becuase honor codes are guidelines that usually are not enforced with more consequences behind them rather than morals. They are sometimes enforced with a pledge filled out with a signature but those who create the pledge fail to understand that the signature is on a sheet of paper that will deteriorate and has no moral value behind it in order to enhance its importance. An honor code is a necessity in a school that is trying to be an exemplary school which all schools should be striving to be. On the other hand it may cause many problems restricting students of their feeling of freedom because an honor code provides restraints and if the student body feels rebellious because of those restraints then they will begin to disregard the honor code thus giving no value in morals or importance to that education facility. Another issue with an honor code is that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if the school implements consequences they soon become meaningless and they usually result in the student being even worse off than before. The problem with that is there aren't many consequences that can be given that do not interfere with the students rights within the school system. Which is why many honor codes are based on morales but even so you cannot make an honor code based on morales without teaching morale importance in the classroom. To successfully implement an honor code you must set up a system where morals are being taught throughout the day within the classrooms as well as the lessons, and ensure that you have a code that helps to implement these morales into everyday things for the students. Until such a code is implemented I will stand on my belief that an honor code is completely unnecessary and a simple waste of time if not carried out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Academic Honesty In reading and researching the topic of academic honesty and integrity I have found that there are varying views on what is considered cheating, and that cheating occurs in all academic levels and fields of study. Interestingly business students do not believe that cheating is as serious as students in other fields. I also found that there are many parties that are responsible for teaching students why academic honesty and integrity are so important. The key to teaching this important value is to start when children enter the educational system and for higher education learning institutions to continue the expectation and education of honesty and integrity. Importance of Maintaining Academic Honesty An important factor when looking at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are required to take religion classes. Maybe they have better moral values than students at secular universities and colleges. So a key question regarding academic honesty and integrity is, whose job is it to teach honesty and integrity in an academic setting? Hall and Kuth (1998) suggest that "an academic honor code will not have the intended effect without the endorsement of and widespread support by the faculty." (p.13). Research by Hall and Kuth (1998) also indicates it is the responsibility of the institution to "promote the importance of academic integrity, clearly articulate their academic integrity policies, disseminate these policies widely, discuss the policies frequently, and have systematic procedures in place for addressing related issues (McCabe & Trevino, 1993)." (p.13) I do not believe it is the colleges and universities alone that need to teach honesty and integrity. They need to implement courses and policies and codes. They need to expect students to follow these codes and policies, and should have a clear cut system to make sure they are being abided by. The consequences of breaking these rules of honest conduct should be dealt with immediately and fairly.
