Flight Patterns Alexie Sherman Summary
Alexie Sherman authors a short story intitled "Flight Patterns" which at first glance has the
appearance of being nothing more than a family man taking a taxi–cab ride to the airport. The main
character, William, is presented as a Native American living in Seattle, Washington with his wife
and young daughter. "Flight Patterns" takes place after the devastating and tragic events of
September 11th, 2001 and dives into the experiences William faced since that historic day. However,
the story is more than meets the eye as William experiences a perspective change on life and family.
William evolves from being a father and husband wondering "what if" to leaving his bags behind in
a sprint towards a telephone. William experiences a complete lifestyle change, from being a
"present" husband and father to realizing how fortunate he truly is. The eventful stories of Fekadu's
is key to William's character evolving as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the sense of not wanting to wake up to wondering where he would be if his life was different. "At
5:05 A.M., Patsy Cline fell loudly to pieces on William's clock radio. He hit the snooze button,
silencing lonesome Patsy, and dozed for fifteen more minutes before Donna Fargo bragged about
being the happiest girl in the whole USA." (55) William is a provider, just as his ancestors were;
however, as evidenced above, and throughout, he struggles with his seemingly normal lifestyle.
William does not jump to his feet and lays on the couch to postpone the starting his day and life.
"Maybe he romanticized the primal–for thousands of years, Indians also died of ear infections–but
William wanted his comfortable and safe life to contain more wilderness." (63) William fantasizes
about living another life, especially after the events of September 11th as it changed out he was
viewed in society. William wondered if he left his life behind to live the way his ancestors did if he

Advertising In Advertising
As you are flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine count how many advertisements
you see. On average advertising takes up 47% of all magazine pages (Moses). Next time you are
flipping through a magazine, count how many advertisements appear. Advertisements are a strategy
for companies to reach out and draw customers in to sell products. We live in a world full of
advertising whether it be right on front of you in a magazine, or driving past on the interstate,
advertisements are everywhere we go. Advertising can be done through commercials, magazines,
social media posts and contests, and through tweets on twitter. According to Jean Kilbourne,
"Advertising often sells a great deal more than products, it sells values, images, and concepts of love
and sexuality, romance, and perhaps most important, normalcy" (RPC 101). Kilbourne is referring to
how we interpret ads ourselves and what the real message is behind them. The advertisement used
for the Dove real beauty campaign conveys a strong message about strong body image where not
only is one body type considered attractive, but all body types are attractive. The advertisement uses
an emotional appeal to influence women to value their own body image and to change the way
women think about their bodies in a positive way. This ad has a vivid white background, making the
focus on the women as they stand out according to their differences. The advertisement shows
women of different sizes, ages, and races posing next to

Larry Mcmurty's Lonesome Dove
The Story of Lonesome Dove takes place in South Texas along the Rio Grande. Larry McMurty
explains in his novel a theme of never taking advantage of people and being grateful for what people
do for you. In the novel of Lonesome Dove, Blue Duck took advantage of most of people in the
town by kidnaping and lying to everyone (McMurty, 20). Woodrow Call tries to be rational and
explain different ways to Blue Duck on how to treat others the right way. Throughout the novel,
multiple characters come and go through the setting of the Rio Grande. Gus Mccrae and Woodrow
Call are the main characters in the book; they are the protagonists of the city, doing the right thing
and trying to help everyone strive in the city. The Indians and Blue Ducks are the ... Show more

The Effects Of Social Media On Society
Since I was younger I have always been creative and interested in coming up with my own unique
ideas. When it came time to think about my future career I decided I needed to be doing something
creative and artsy. I was not quite sure what I wanted to do with my future that involved my many
interests. Finally, I came up with becoming an advertising manager after getting my degree in
business marketing. Advertising managers create interest among potential buyers of a product or
service for a department, for an entire organization, or on a project basis. They must plan advertising
and promotional campaigns and decide which media to advertise in, such as, radio, television, print,
online media, and billboards. Advertisements and forms of social media have a huge affect on
people, because it is mainly all that we see. Now these advertisements are meant to sell society on
an idea or product, they are not meant to be negative in any way. However, some advertisements,
mainly on social media websites, are affecting society, especially women, more than most people
realize.
The whole point of an advertisement is to find a target audience, capture their attention, and sell an
idea. Any person could log into any one of their social media accounts and see an advertisement for
anything. Without advertisements, businesses would not be as successful and people would not be as
inclined to give in to a new concept or item. People are easily persuaded, especially if it is a new
trend.

Context, Violence and Leadership in Cormac McCarthy's...
Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" does a marvelous job of highlighting the violent nature of
mankind. The underlying cause of this violent nature can be analyzed from three perspectives, the
first being where the occurrence of violence takes place, the second man's need to be led and the
way their leader leads them, and lastly whether violence is truly an innate and inherent characteristic
in man. Cormac McCarthy once said, "I think the notion that the species can be improved in some
way, that everyone can live in harmony is a really dangerous idea." (Overview) This quote leaves us
with the impression that humanity as a whole is innately violent, and we will explore this idea by
examining "Blood Meridian." This paper consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The question to ask is what caused the West to be such a formidable location? The first theory to
explore is that which states the land "Blood Meridian" took place in, Southwest America and
Mexico, caused an absence of responsibility, which then caused the violent acts. In "Blood
Meridian" massacres occur almost daily, yet civilization is neither built up nor hurt because there is
no civilization to break down. (Kiefer) At the beginning of the book, The Kid has been brought to
Captain White to be interviewed for a spot in the company. Captain White exclaims to the Kid,
"There is no government in Mexico. Hell, there's no God in Mexico. Never will be." (Blood
Meridian 36) While this statement may be the byproduct of racism on Captain White's part, there is
no doubt that some part of this statement holds true. On many occasions the gang of scalp–hunters
engage in illegal behavior in Mexico and are met by little law enforcement. For three weeks the
gang of Americans make Chihuahua city theirs, feasting, drinking and whoring. It becomes so bad
that the locals write on walls of the city, "Mejor Los Indios." This translates to, "Better the Indians."
(Schopen) Of course the gang encountered little to no resistance during their three–week takeover of

Lonesome Dove Analysis
Lonesome Dove is a story in the western genre written by Larry McMurty. The book was published
in 1985 and was the first book of a tetralogy, but third in chronology. The book is about a strenuous
cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Lonesome Dove was a wholesome and interesting book that
engages your curiosity from the beginning to the end. In the beginning of the story they are in a
small south Texas town called lonesome Dove, where the two main characters Augustus McCrae
and Woodrow Call had settled down and started a livery stable after being famous Texas rangers.
The journey starts off after Jake Spoon rides into town talking about Montana and the untapped
potential. That is what sets them off on their journey driving cattle from Texas to Montana. As their
journey began they had many dilemmas, but I would say their first dilemma was the death of Sean
O'Brien a young Irish man found with his brother Allen O'Brien when they collected the cattle for
the drive. That part of the story was the first major event of the story driving fear in many of the
crew. As the drive went north, so did Jake spoon, who brought along a woman by the name of
Lorena Wood. Lorena is a major character in the story as she is a love interest of both Augustus
McCrae, Jake Spoon ,and desired by many. The story had an interesting offshoot that involved a
sheriff from fort smith, Arkansas by the name of July Johnson. This story begins with Jake Spoon
who was in fort smith gambling when he got into a

have always been very fascinated with Duvall. He has that toughness about him, I think it takes to
be a star in a western movie. Duvall was born January 5. 1932, in San Diego. In the winter of 1955,
Duvall began to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City under
director Sanford Meisner. While he was there, he roomed with Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman,
and James Caan. Between the three of them, they have 19 Academy Award nominations, with five
wins.
Duvall played roles in several western movies including Open Range, True Grit, Lawman,

was it created? They say necessity is the mother of invention, when in 2004 the dove company
suffered from low sales, and corrupted crowd wanting shallow over exaggerated beauty, dominated
by ignorance, of what real beauty is all about, so they wanted to reshape the definition of beauty,
from a stereotype of what a woman's look should be, to what real beauty is all about. Instead of
following the market, for standards in beauty traits, like full lips, small nose, wide eyes, thin
anatomy, to change these concepts into something entirely different, a whole new perspective of
beauty definition coming from being naturally beautiful, like having freckles, being overweight,
having wrinkles, accepting the differences where the real beauty exists. A fresh, new perspective, or
shall we say revolutionary new definition, of a misunderstood meaning of beauty, using hardest
method to do while attempting to convince an audience, which is a social changing, for they never
used the word "solve", instead they used the word "change" repetitively, because dove's primary
objective was the change.  The campaign targeted middle aged women, between the ages 40–55,
not perfectly shaped models. They wanted to reach as wide audience as they can in order to make
women accept themselves even in imperfection on one hand, and to improve their sales market the
other hand. These women have steady incomes, and can pay for products without

The Lonesome Dove Saga, By Larry Mcmurtry
There are so many different concerns that a lot of women have today, and just like there is today, in
the past during the time of Larry McMurtry's writing of the Lonesome Dove Saga, women had
perhaps the same, or maybe even a little different, concerns throughout this time period that you
come to find. These fully formed characters McMurtry introduces you to come to be; fun–loving,
strong–minded, and heart–filled women.
Clara Allen and Captain August "Gus" McCrae was thought to be together forever. Throughout
years and years of their lives, Clara and Gus had a connection. A type of connection that simply was
one that could not compare to any other. They were the type of people who knew what they wanted,
but knew it was no good for the both of them. As they both started to accept the fact that no matter
how much they cared for each other, it would never hold out in a permanent relationship. Gus goes
on a cattle drive from Lonesome Dove, Texas to Montana in hopes to find the one who once turned
him down, Clara and maybe have a chance to change her mind. Clara was the type of women who
could not marry Gus, for it was the fact that she thought of him as someone to wild to try and settle
down with. Clara knew what she had to do and who she had to be with. For Clara, it may have been
the fact of she loved him enough to let him go, and perhaps he felt the same way. She felt for Gus,

Tamela Mann was born on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas and she the youngest siblings

during the Tyler Perry's plays when Tamela became an actor that when she first met her husband

Tamela Mann made it throughout her years when she was choir singer, actor, mother and
grandmother that doesn't mean she never stops working with her music. Tamela Mann wanted
everyone to know the true meaning of gospel through her music. She made the best songs or album

Analysis of Daystar by Rita Dove Essay
While reading the poem "Daystar," written by Rita Dove, its readers most likely do not ask thought–
provoking questions like "Why did Dove write this?" or "What is the true meaning behind this
poem?" but the poem has deeper meaning than what its outside layer portrays. Dove, an African
American woman born in 1952, has not only viewed the racism of the United States society, but she
has also seen how gender can or cannot play a role in the advancement of a person's life (Rita Dove:
The Poetry Foundation). The poem "Daystar" not only takes an outside perspective on the everyday
life of a woman, but it closely relates to Dove's family history. Dove uses the experiences of her life
as a woman, and the knowledge gained from living in countries ... Show more content on

"Daystar" comes from a book of poems written by Dove entitled Thomas and Beulah, which tells
both the real and unreal stories of Dove's maternal grandparents (Stein 64). Unlike Dove, who grew
up during a time of women's rights, her grandmother most likely did not have an admired career as a
housewife. In discussing Thomas and Beulah, Stein explains, "It is almost painful to witness
Thomas and Beulah, two people clearly devoted to each other, continually misinterpret each other's
behavior" (70). Although "Daystar" is not necessarily written from an autobiographical perspective,
Dove is using the research of her family and her own experiences to welcome us into the lives of the
distressed Beulah. Beyond the already mentioned first line about how Beulah "wanted a little room
for thinking (1)," there are many other evidences in the poem that prove this woman desires more
than what she currently has. Even today, women are viewed as the main caretakers of their children
and the ones who are expected to respond to the domestic duties at home, and this is what Beulah
exemplifies. In the next lines of "Daystar," obligations of motherhood are further explained as Dove
writes, "but she saw diapers steaming on the line, /a doll slumped behind the door" (2–3). Both the
diapers and the doll imply that it is Beulah's job to take care of the laundry and clean up the mess
that her children have left behind. Furthermore, the

The Studio System Essay

Key point about the studio system could be:
Despite being one of the biggest industries in the United States, indeed the World, the internal
workings of the 'dream factory' that is Hollywood is little understood outside the business.
The Hollywood Studio System: A History is the first book to describe and analyse the complete
development, classic operation, and reinvention of the global corporate entities which produce and
distribute most of the films we watch.
Starting in 1920, Adolph Zukor, head of Paramount Pictures, over the decade of the 1920s helped to

The following essay will examine how these changes took place, and what impact it had on the film
making industry in America. We shall also examine how the system relates to the current production
methods used in film making. The main issues raised within the text will be summarised concisely
within the conclusion. Before a film reaches the cinema screen, and its audience it must go through
a three stage process. Firstly and most obviously it has to be produced, following this it must then be
distributed, and finally exhibited. Before the introduction of the studio system in the 1920s all of
these processes were controlled separately. Although this gave the makers of films, such as directors
and producers, room to express their creativity it placed a heavy constraint upon the amount of
movies that could be made, and financial profits. However, despite Hollywood's uneasy birth, by the
1920s it had become one of the worlds leading film producers (Dirks, 2002). This was largely due to
the introduction of the producer, or studio syste

Character and Landscape: The Interlocking Elopement of Isolation
According to Michael Budd in his essay, "A Home in the Wilderness", the Western genre is "based"
on distinct "oppositions" that operate to complicate character relations and move the plot forward
(2). Within these various oppositions, Budd highlights one of the most prominent is the juxtaposing
"settlement and wilderness" which can be seen at the forefront of films such as Ride Lonesome
directed by Budd Boetticher in 1959 (2). In Ride Lonesome, the main character of Ben Brigade is an
aging bounty hunter that seeks revenge against a bandit that murdered his Wife; Landscape in the
film is used to demonstrate the volume of isolation he feels that ineptly separates him from the ...

When focusing on the opening sequence of both films, key shot angles and perspectives of the wild
landscape allude to elements of the main character that alert the audience to their distinct separation
from society. When analyzing the first shot sequence of The Searchers, a women is seen opening a
door from the inside creating scenic shot in which the outdoors is framed from her perspective. In
showing this shot from her perspective, a distinct juxtaposition of separating landscape from
civilization is demonstrated as she stands from her porch looking out. From following her
perspective this relates closely to Budds' understanding of how Ford creates a visualization of
civilization through the stylistic "...tradition in which home and shelter is juxtaposed with its
opposite" being "the desert wilderness, within single images" (2). The "visual confrontation" in turn
creates a focused "framing" device for the audience where of harsh color separations between home
and landscape inhabit a distinct isolation of the protagonist within their inhabitance (2). In following
her direction, the camera utilizes an eye line shot that pans to the direction of a rugged road where
Ethan can be seen riding in from a distance. What is distinct about this shot is how Ethan essentially
becomes apart of the landscapes rural composition, while the female counterpart visually stands out

Too Many Commercials on Television
If you're sitting at home watching television it's quite obvious that you're going to end up seeing
more commercials than the length of whichever show you're viewing. Some people might take those
opportunities to direct there attention different matters and others might just shrug them off.
However, from the view of a feminist, it could mean suffering through stereotypical depictions of
women and wanting to hurl your flatscreen out the window. To put it simply, the way society tends
to view women is far from being harmless.
On November 9, 2013, Pantene came out with a feminist–themed ad campaign in the Philippines
that quickly spread throughout the world. The video featured a man and a woman facing a typical
workplace double standard. The male in the classy suit is called a boss, but the female in her little
black dress is bossy. When giving a speech, he's persuasive, but she's being pushy. At the end of the
commericial the female twists around and words appear onscreen: "Don't let labels hold you back.
Be strong and shine." Advertising such as this first has you smelling fresh flowers but then reality
sets in and all you can really smell is bullshit. "Is a woman really considered "vain" when she
washes her face? Is prancing across the street in a dress really being a "showoff?" In trying to dispel
female stereotypes, Pantene may make women feel more criticized than they are." (Claire Suddath,

Jane Austen 's Novel And The World Of Books
Novels are a unique form of writing that brings about a new style in the world of books. Novel by its
definition is a new kind different from anything ever before. These books range from the greats to
the recently printed because novels only have to be new for when they came out. So for instance
Pride and Prejudice was novel when it came out in 1813 just like how Mrs. Dalloway was novel
when it came out in 1925. Although these novels seem to be fiction, if not realistic fiction, it is
common to wonder how the authors came up with these ideas for their books. In actuality most
authors take experiences that they had from their lives and incorporated them into the story. Often
after researching an author one can see that there are many parallels between their novel and their
actual life. Some aspects can be from other situations outside of ones personal life, but ultimately
authors create much of their stories based off of life experiences and can be seen in Housekeeping,
The Passion, and Thomas and Beulah. Growing up in Sandpoint Idaho was the first influence that
Marilynne Robinson had when it comes to writing her stories. In this instance it has influenced her
in her writing of Housekeeping to have a more western and Midwestern feel to there locations. On
top of that she includes many rural factors into her stories other than Housekeeping referencing her
life growing up in rural Idaho. One of the more notable factors in this comparison in Housekeeping

Example Of Visual Art Critique
Visual Art Critique
For my visual art critique, I attend the Texas State University Wittliff Collections on Tuesday,
October tenth. During my visit I viewed works of art from the Lonesome Dove collection. The first
piece of work I critiques was the photograph "Crossing the Rio Grande" taken by Bill Wittliff. This
photo was taken on the set of the Lonesome Dove in 1988. What stood out to me was the
significance of how real this photo is. So many slaves have tried to cross this river to escape
persecution and slavery. Although, in this instance the photo is depicting three cowboys or horseman
crossing the Rio Grande River in pursuit of cattle driving thousands of cattle from Texas up north to
Montana. Although this photo is quite iconic in relation to this history of Texas I do not believe this
piece of work along with many others from this exhibit should be deemed canonical. I personally
rate this piece of work a four and a half, out of ten simply because while it is a great piece of art; it
is the type of work I would like to hang in my bathroom above my toilet so while I am urinating I
can view a nice "manly" piece of art.
The second piece I critiqued was also a photo from the set of "Lonesome Dove". The second piece
of art was titled "Gus on Porch," and was also taken by Bill Wittliff. This piece of work was very
interesting to me because although I am not from Texas, I believe that this photo depicts how many
outsiders of Texas, view the states past. This photo features

Dove is Trying to Change the Look of Beauty in Women
According to Dove.com, "Only 4% of women describe themselves as beautiful." Women have
always dealt with problems of beauty. Many of them desire to look like the models they see in the
magazines. Unfortunately, this unrealistic expectation has led American women to judge their own
beauty in some negative ways. However, a campaign by Dove has attempted to convince the other
96 percent of women that they are also beautiful. Dove Real Beauty Sketches is a short film
produced in April 2013 as a part of Dove Real Beauty campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to
show that "you are more beautiful than you think" by comparing the sketches of self–description and
the descriptions from strangers. At the beginning of the film, over lightly soft music, a group of
female participants from different ages briefly talk about their appearance, and how they wish they
can be somehow different. Then, they are called back into a warehouse where a man named Gil
Zamora, who is a FBI trained forensic artist, is waiting in front of a drafting board with his back to
them and separated by a curtain. He asks them about their hair color, chin, and their most prominent
feature. At the same time, he draws sketches based on how they describe themselves, and then draw
the same people with the strangers describing them. Then, the commercial continues to flash on the
next screen; the artist shows the sketches to these women with the version of their appearance in
their mind compared to the version everyone

A Reflection Of Kirk Franklin's Life
Kirk Dwayne Franklin was born January 26, 1970 in Forth Worth, Texas. Kirk Franklin has been
one of the most influential gospel artists since his debut in 1993. Franklin lived a troublesome
childhood. He was abandoned by his mother and did not know who his father is. In his song, "Let It
Go" he states, "My momma gave me up when I was four years. She didn't destroy my body but she
killed my soul" His gospel music became a reflection of his testimony. Though Kirk Franklin faced
a plethora of obstacles as a child, he was able to overcome them with his faith in God and his Aunt
Gertrude who took him in at four years old and believed in him. Kirk Franklins gospel music
appeals to Black Gospel, Urban, Gospel, and Contemporary Gospel style. Kirk Franklins childhood
experiences, skills and urge for change in the Christian culture inspired him to become one of the

One of the biggest hits on the album was the song, "Why We Sing." The album offered a smooth,

Beauty Standards : The Positive Effects Of The Standards...
Beauty standards are portrayed everywhere: on magazines, social media, ads, commercials, and
even flaunted among peers. While the ideals are supposed to promote health awareness, fitness
motivation, and self love, it unfortunately results in many unfavorable consequences. Women are
constantly "penalized for not being beautiful and at the same time are stigmatized, even
pathologized, for not feeling beautiful, for having low self–esteem, for engaging in behaviors like
dieting and excessive exercising, or for having eating disorders" (Johnston and Taylor 954). Beauty
standards are unrealistic and unhealthy to pursue, and misinforms the public on what true beauty is.
While not all beauty image ideals promote negative feelings and dissatisfaction, many believe that
the negative effects far outweighs any positive effects. There have been many attempts to validate
our current beauty standards. For example, critics have argued that while there has been research
showing the negative effects, "there are also studies that found no effect or even positive effects of
these media portrayals on young women" (Arendt, et al 2). Also, while many people accuse beauty
of being arbitrary, it is simply not the case. As F. Nahai states in his article "Evolutionary Beauty",
"The quest to define standards of beauty is not new. One of the earliest to seek insight into the
elusive qualities of beauty was the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. He believed that beauty was

such as becoming distant from her mother and boys are always on her mind.As each poem is written
it is enviable to see the maturity that has taken over her.The story really connects with its audience

Essay on Analysis of Rita Dove’s, “Daystar”
C Stevens 07/09/2010 Professor Kierath English 102.212 Analysis of Rita Dove's, "Daystar"
"Daystar" by Rita Dove is an expressive poem, which centers on the main character, a young mother
and wife, who internally struggles with her burdensome, daily duties, which creates a lack of
freedom in her world. Dove's choice of words lets the reader empathize with her confined life. In
this poem, irony exists for the mere fact that from birth to adulthood the female population is
brought up to feel fulfilled by simply becoming a wife and mother; however, this poem describes the
monotonous duties and the joyless bond that can be between husband and wife. As the poem opens,
Dove begins with a metaphor that entertains the idea of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Later that night when Thomas roller over and lurched into her, she would open her eyes and think
of the place that was hers" this proves the point that she cannot even express herself sexually
because she does not feel as if she has control in the situation. Her mind wanders elsewhere, in a
place where she is her own master, instead of what is reality. Additionally, the main character's
husband shows some selfish tendencies in the fact that he may not notice his wife's discontentment
with his affection. However, this may also present the lack of communication between man and wife
and therefore may cause a sense of isolation from her husband. The main character possesses the
characteristics of most young women, a full plate of responsibility and the lack of freedom that can
wither away a person's soul. My response to this poem is that I strongly respect the author for
bringing up such a controversial issue such as discontentment with being a stay–at–home mother,
since this is usually to be expected of women. Dove explains the poem delicately and leaves the
underlying sense that she may have possibly been through the situation herself. This being said, her
imagery is wonderfully used and the metaphor of the doll being slumped over is a brilliant way to
reflect upon the main character's feelings and actions. The irony comes into play, in my opinion,

Analysis Of Of Mice And Men
Critical Analysis on "Of Mice and Men" In 1992 Gary Sinise directed the tragic film "Of Mice and
Men." The story is about George Milton and Lennie Small, two friends who travel together in search
of work. Though Lennie is very calm and harmless he isn't very smart and is unaware of his
strength, which leads him into trouble. A New York Times article describes him this way; "Lennie is
a gentle giant of a man with the mental capacities of an 8–year–old. He loves to fondle soft things,
like mice, puppies and rabbits, even a small piece of velvet." Through the eyes of Lennie and
George the audience sees the special relationship that they share. However there is a larger theme at
play in the film. Though George has Lennie by his side, Lennie's companionship seems to offer
George very little relief from his loneliness. The people they encounter and the irony of the duo's
situation portray the theme of loneliness in the film. The film begins with a scene of George and
Lennie running from a posse of men with dogs and guns. After escaping their pursuers they are left
on a train to nowhere, all alone. This is the first time that George and Lennie's loneliness is revealed.
In a following scene their isolation is confirmed as they walk down an empty road taking them to
another chance at work. On the way, George notices that Lenny is playing with something. George
finds that Lennie has a dead mouse. Lennie has a habit of getting mice and petting them until they
die. When George takes

Carine Mccandless The Wild Analysis Essay
"I was confident I could provide enough indirect clues for readers to understand that, to no small
degree, Chris's seemingly inexplicable behavior during the final years of his life was in fact
explained by the volatile dynamics of the McCandless family while he was growing up" (Krakauer:
The Wild Truth 9). Many readers may view Chris, or Alex, as an individual who deems reproachable
in terms of his drive to endure the wild, and live solely off of the land. However, they are unaware
of the prohibitive memoir Chris retains in relation to his family. Krakauer strives to accomplish an
"indirect" insinuation to the reader that Chris upheld a non–healthy relationship with his first hand
relatives, and that his irrational behavior was acted upon this occurrence. This coherently leads to
Krakauer's indirect characterization of Christopher as that of enigmatic and unsubstantiated in terms
of mental competence. In accumulation, it illustrates that other individuals, such as Krakauer or his
readers, renowned that the assertiveness in which he alleged in was not so representative of a ...

An Analysis of Hector Berlioz's Les Nuits d'Ete Born in 1803, in the village of La Côte–Saint–
André, France, Hector Berlioz produced some of the most invigorating and exciting music of the
Romantic period (Holoman, 1, 6). Romanticism primarily focused on subjectivism, therefore people
were concentrating more on their emotions and spirituality and less on logical explanations for the
problems of humanity. Those of the Romantic period valued nature and depended upon the

The tonal tension portrays the anger and confusion that the character is experiencing. During the
beginning of the movement, the vocal line is given much freedom for expression because the
accompaniment is mainly comprised of block chords entering on each beat. As the emotions of the
character intensify, the energy of accompaniment is also enhanced by repeating chords by use of
compound eighth notes. The emotion of the vocalist and orchestra continues to increase because the
vocalist makes their way to their high/head register to sustain notes to portray their anguish while
the orchestra is playing arpeggiated chords set rhythmically to thirty–second notes. The movement
ends with the vocalist sustaining and the orchestra arpeggiating the dominant (V) chord to leave the
listener with a sense of unsettlement and discomfort (Berlioz, Les Nuits d'Ete). L'Absence
(Absence) is the fourth movement and is very contrasting to Sur les Lagunes by means of emotion
and tonality. The character singing is in a stage of grief when one may deny the occurrence of the
death. The singer repeatedly pleads "Reviens, reviens ma bien aimee," which literally translates to
"Return, return my beloved." Though the text is saddening, Berlioz set the song in the key of F#
major which provides a bright and elevating sound. The accompaniment is minimal in this
movement because it

A Good Man Is Hard To Find, By O Connor
The theme of nature, environment, and landscape has always been integral in the development of

Analysis Of Lonesome Dove
Lonesome Dove Book Report
Lonesome Dove is a story in the western genre written by Larry McMurty. The book was published
in 1985 and was the first book of a tetralogy, but third in chronology. The book is about a strenuous
cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Lonesome Dove was a wholesome and interesting book that
engages your curiosity from the beginning to the end. In the beginning of the story they are in a
small south Texas town called lonesome Dove, where the two main characters Augustus McCrae
and Woodrow Call have settle down and started a livery stable after being famous Texas rangers.
Third journey starts off after Jake Spoon rides into town talking about Montana and the untapped
potential. That is what sets them off on their journey driving cattle from Texas to Montana.
As there journey began they had many dilemmas but I would say their first dilemma was the death
of Sean O'Brien a young Irish men found with his brother Allen O'Brien when they collected the
cattle for the drive. That part of the story was the first major event of the story driving fear in many
of the crew. As the drive went north, so did Jake spoon, who brought along a woman by the name of
Lorena Wood. Lorena is major character in the story as she is a love interest of both Augustus
McCrae, Jake Spoon ,and desired by many. The story had an interesting offshoot that involved a
sheriff from fort smith, Arkansas by the name of July Johnson. This story begins with Jake Spoon

Is Beauty Only Thin Deep? Society's Beliefs in the...
Is beauty Only Thin Deep? Throughout time, the most controversial topic among women health has
been weight. Society and our culture molds women's brains into believing that being thin is what
will fulfill overall happiness. Being thin means you are more successful, loved, attractive, and
overall truly beautiful. Thin women are seen as having an overall perfect life. Although, there is
another form of woman that is seen as undesirable, hopeless, overall disliked by many. That form of
woman is the curvy or larger female. If one were to go out on the street and gather a group of men
and show them the thin vs. large female and which one is more attractive, most of them would say
the thin is. As a result to this, we reject the larger women because they do not fit societies norms.
Thin women are afraid to become this. In this way, our culture has created a monster. Every thin
female will admit at least one time in their lives they have been worried about "getting fat" or
"gaining more weight". When a thin female sees this, they are afraid they are becoming the
monstrous other that is the larger female. As mentioned above, the thin female is what society and
our culture looks up to as the definition of beautiful. What everyone sees from the thin woman is
that she's popular, admired by many, envied by most, and have absolutely have no problem

The West in Film Essay examples
The depiction of minorities, specifically women and Native Americans, in Western film has changed
drastically from the early 1930's to the late 1980's. These changes represent the changing views of
American society in general throughout the 20th century. In the early part of the century, women and
Native Americans were depicted as a burden. Women were viewed as a form of property, helpless
and needing support. These minorities were obstacles in the quest for manifest destiny by the United
States. Western films during the early 20th century represent the ignorance of American culture
towards minorities. As time progressed, society began to develop compassion for Native Americans
and men began to see women as equals. The movie industry ... Show more content on

These films were made when America was struggling with the idea of what it meant to be American
and who was American. The view towards Native Americans during this period was that they were
"savage", thus giving American expansionists the right to take over their land and ignore the rights
of the Indians.
Stagecoach is a classic western directed by John Ford. The central theme of this script "the
passengers' forging a temporary community to defend themselves against the Indians and the desert"
(Slotkin, 305) represents the societal views of the time. The frontier was a place of hope and new
beginnings, with only the Indians in the way. Americans during this time period strongly supported
this view of Native Americans as being an obstacle in American expansion. This is displayed not
only in the movie but also in the fact that these expeditions were supported by the nation. The
triumph of Americans over the Native Americans is a common theme in early westerns.
While accurately depicting the invasion of Americans on Native American soil, Ford makes no
attempt to suggest that these acts were immoral because during the 1930's this was not the point of
view of Americans. " The depiction of Native Americans in Stagecoach is typical of the late 1930's.

of his signature erotic falsetto: "I said, 'Coooool! But I'm leaving my pants on/ 'Cuz I'm kinda goin'

Flight Patterns Alexie Sherman Summary

  • 1. Flight Patterns Alexie Sherman Summary Alexie Sherman authors a short story intitled "Flight Patterns" which at first glance has the appearance of being nothing more than a family man taking a taxi–cab ride to the airport. The main character, William, is presented as a Native American living in Seattle, Washington with his wife and young daughter. "Flight Patterns" takes place after the devastating and tragic events of September 11th, 2001 and dives into the experiences William faced since that historic day. However, the story is more than meets the eye as William experiences a perspective change on life and family. William evolves from being a father and husband wondering "what if" to leaving his bags behind in a sprint towards a telephone. William experiences a complete lifestyle change, from being a "present" husband and father to realizing how fortunate he truly is. The eventful stories of Fekadu's is key to William's character evolving as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the sense of not wanting to wake up to wondering where he would be if his life was different. "At 5:05 A.M., Patsy Cline fell loudly to pieces on William's clock radio. He hit the snooze button, silencing lonesome Patsy, and dozed for fifteen more minutes before Donna Fargo bragged about being the happiest girl in the whole USA." (55) William is a provider, just as his ancestors were; however, as evidenced above, and throughout, he struggles with his seemingly normal lifestyle. William does not jump to his feet and lays on the couch to postpone the starting his day and life. "Maybe he romanticized the primal–for thousands of years, Indians also died of ear infections–but William wanted his comfortable and safe life to contain more wilderness." (63) William fantasizes about living another life, especially after the events of September 11th as it changed out he was viewed in society. William wondered if he left his life behind to live the way his ancestors did if he would be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Advertising In Advertising As you are flipping through the pages of your favorite magazine count how many advertisements you see. On average advertising takes up 47% of all magazine pages (Moses). Next time you are flipping through a magazine, count how many advertisements appear. Advertisements are a strategy for companies to reach out and draw customers in to sell products. We live in a world full of advertising whether it be right on front of you in a magazine, or driving past on the interstate, advertisements are everywhere we go. Advertising can be done through commercials, magazines, social media posts and contests, and through tweets on twitter. According to Jean Kilbourne, "Advertising often sells a great deal more than products, it sells values, images, and concepts of love and sexuality, romance, and perhaps most important, normalcy" (RPC 101). Kilbourne is referring to how we interpret ads ourselves and what the real message is behind them. The advertisement used for the Dove real beauty campaign conveys a strong message about strong body image where not only is one body type considered attractive, but all body types are attractive. The advertisement uses an emotional appeal to influence women to value their own body image and to change the way women think about their bodies in a positive way. This ad has a vivid white background, making the focus on the women as they stand out according to their differences. The advertisement shows women of different sizes, ages, and races posing next to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Larry Mcmurty's Lonesome Dove The Story of Lonesome Dove takes place in South Texas along the Rio Grande. Larry McMurty explains in his novel a theme of never taking advantage of people and being grateful for what people do for you. In the novel of Lonesome Dove, Blue Duck took advantage of most of people in the town by kidnaping and lying to everyone (McMurty, 20). Woodrow Call tries to be rational and explain different ways to Blue Duck on how to treat others the right way. Throughout the novel, multiple characters come and go through the setting of the Rio Grande. Gus Mccrae and Woodrow Call are the main characters in the book; they are the protagonists of the city, doing the right thing and trying to help everyone strive in the city. • 7. The Effects Of Social Media On Society Since I was younger I have always been creative and interested in coming up with my own unique ideas. When it came time to think about my future career I decided I needed to be doing something creative and artsy. I was not quite sure what I wanted to do with my future that involved my many interests. Finally, I came up with becoming an advertising manager after getting my degree in business marketing. Advertising managers create interest among potential buyers of a product or service for a department, for an entire organization, or on a project basis. They must plan advertising and promotional campaigns and decide which media to advertise in, such as, radio, television, print, online media, and billboards. Advertisements and forms of social media have a huge affect on people, because it is mainly all that we see. Now these advertisements are meant to sell society on an idea or product, they are not meant to be negative in any way. However, some advertisements, mainly on social media websites, are affecting society, especially women, more than most people realize. The whole point of an advertisement is to find a target audience, capture their attention, and sell an idea. Any person could log into any one of their social media accounts and see an advertisement for anything. Without advertisements, businesses would not be as successful and people would not be as inclined to give in to a new concept or item. People are easily persuaded, especially if it is a new trend. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Context, Violence and Leadership in Cormac McCarthy's... Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" does a marvelous job of highlighting the violent nature of mankind. The underlying cause of this violent nature can be analyzed from three perspectives, the first being where the occurrence of violence takes place, the second man's need to be led and the way their leader leads them, and lastly whether violence is truly an innate and inherent characteristic in man. Cormac McCarthy once said, "I think the notion that the species can be improved in some way, that everyone can live in harmony is a really dangerous idea." (Overview) This quote leaves us with the impression that humanity as a whole is innately violent, and we will explore this idea by examining "Blood Meridian." This paper consists of three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question to ask is what caused the West to be such a formidable location? The first theory to explore is that which states the land "Blood Meridian" took place in, Southwest America and Mexico, caused an absence of responsibility, which then caused the violent acts. In "Blood Meridian" massacres occur almost daily, yet civilization is neither built up nor hurt because there is no civilization to break down. (Kiefer) At the beginning of the book, The Kid has been brought to Captain White to be interviewed for a spot in the company. Captain White exclaims to the Kid, "There is no government in Mexico. Hell, there's no God in Mexico. Never will be." (Blood Meridian 36) While this statement may be the byproduct of racism on Captain White's part, there is no doubt that some part of this statement holds true. On many occasions the gang of scalp–hunters engage in illegal behavior in Mexico and are met by little law enforcement. For three weeks the gang of Americans make Chihuahua city theirs, feasting, drinking and whoring. It becomes so bad that the locals write on walls of the city, "Mejor Los Indios." This translates to, "Better the Indians." (Schopen) Of course the gang encountered little to no resistance during their three–week takeover of the city, proving the ... • 11. Lonesome Dove Analysis Lonesome Dove is a story in the western genre written by Larry McMurty. The book was published in 1985 and was the first book of a tetralogy, but third in chronology. The book is about a strenuous cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Lonesome Dove was a wholesome and interesting book that engages your curiosity from the beginning to the end. In the beginning of the story they are in a small south Texas town called lonesome Dove, where the two main characters Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call had settled down and started a livery stable after being famous Texas rangers. The journey starts off after Jake Spoon rides into town talking about Montana and the untapped potential. That is what sets them off on their journey driving cattle from Texas to Montana. As their journey began they had many dilemmas, but I would say their first dilemma was the death of Sean O'Brien a young Irish man found with his brother Allen O'Brien when they collected the cattle for the drive. That part of the story was the first major event of the story driving fear in many of the crew. As the drive went north, so did Jake spoon, who brought along a woman by the name of Lorena Wood. Lorena is a major character in the story as she is a love interest of both Augustus McCrae, Jake Spoon ,and desired by many. The story had an interesting offshoot that involved a sheriff from fort smith, Arkansas by the name of July Johnson. This story begins with Jake Spoon who was in fort smith gambling when he got into a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He has that toughness about him, I think it takes to be a star in a western movie. Duvall was born January 5. 1932, in San Diego. In the winter of 1955, Duvall began to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in New York City under director Sanford Meisner. While he was there, he roomed with Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and James Caan. Between the three of them, they have 19 Academy Award nominations, with five wins. But why was it created? They say necessity is the mother of invention, when in 2004 the dove company suffered from low sales, and corrupted crowd wanting shallow over exaggerated beauty, dominated by ignorance, of what real beauty is all about, so they wanted to reshape the definition of beauty, from a stereotype of what a woman's look should be, to what real beauty is all about. Instead of following the market, for standards in beauty traits, like full lips, small nose, wide eyes, thin anatomy, to change these concepts into something entirely different, a whole new perspective of beauty definition coming from being naturally beautiful, like having freckles, being overweight, having wrinkles, accepting the differences where the real beauty exists. A fresh, new perspective, or shall we say revolutionary new definition, of a misunderstood meaning of beauty, using hardest method to do while attempting to convince an audience, which is a social changing, for they never used the word "solve", instead they used the word "change" repetitively, because dove's primary objective was the change.  The campaign targeted middle aged women, between the ages 40–55, not perfectly shaped models. They wanted to reach as wide audience as they can in order to make women accept themselves even in imperfection on one hand, and to improve their sales market the other hand. The Lonesome Dove Saga, By Larry Mcmurtry There are so many different concerns that a lot of women have today, and just like there is today, in the past during the time of Larry McMurtry's writing of the Lonesome Dove Saga, women had perhaps the same, or maybe even a little different, concerns throughout this time period that you come to find. These fully formed characters McMurtry introduces you to come to be; fun–loving, strong–minded, and heart–filled women. Clara Allen and Captain August "Gus" McCrae was thought to be together forever. Throughout years and years of their lives, Clara and Gus had a connection. A type of connection that simply was one that could not compare to any other. They were the type of people who knew what they wanted, but knew it was no good for the both of them. As they both started to accept the fact that no matter how much they cared for each other, it would never hold out in a permanent relationship. Gus goes on a cattle drive from Lonesome Dove, Texas to Montana in hopes to find the one who once turned him down, Clara and maybe have a chance to change her mind. Clara was the type of women who could not marry Gus, for it was the fact that she thought of him as someone to wild to try and settle down with. Clara knew what she had to do and who she had to be with. For Clara, it may have been the fact of she loved him enough to let him go, and perhaps he felt the same way. • 30. Analysis of Daystar by Rita Dove Essay While reading the poem "Daystar," written by Rita Dove, its readers most likely do not ask thought– provoking questions like "Why did Dove write this?" or "What is the true meaning behind this poem?" but the poem has deeper meaning than what its outside layer portrays. Dove, an African American woman born in 1952, has not only viewed the racism of the United States society, but she has also seen how gender can or cannot play a role in the advancement of a person's life (Rita Dove: The Poetry Foundation). The poem "Daystar" not only takes an outside perspective on the everyday life of a woman, but it closely relates to Dove's family history. Dove uses the experiences of her life as a woman, and the knowledge gained from living in countries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Daystar" comes from a book of poems written by Dove entitled Thomas and Beulah, which tells both the real and unreal stories of Dove's maternal grandparents (Stein 64). Unlike Dove, who grew up during a time of women's rights, her grandmother most likely did not have an admired career as a housewife. In discussing Thomas and Beulah, Stein explains, "It is almost painful to witness Thomas and Beulah, two people clearly devoted to each other, continually misinterpret each other's behavior" (70). Although "Daystar" is not necessarily written from an autobiographical perspective, Dove is using the research of her family and her own experiences to welcome us into the lives of the distressed Beulah. Beyond the already mentioned first line about how Beulah "wanted a little room for thinking (1)," there are many other evidences in the poem that prove this woman desires more than what she currently has. Even today, women are viewed as the main caretakers of their children and the ones who are expected to respond to the domestic duties at home, and this is what Beulah exemplifies. In the next lines of "Daystar," obligations of motherhood are further explained as Dove writes, "but she saw diapers steaming on the line, /a doll slumped behind the door" (2–3). Both the diapers and the doll imply that it is Beulah's job to take care of the laundry and clean up the mess that her children have left behind. Furthermore, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following essay will examine how these changes took place, and what impact it had on the film making industry in America. We shall also examine how the system relates to the current production methods used in film making. The main issues raised within the text will be summarised concisely within the conclusion. Before a film reaches the cinema screen, and its audience it must go through a three stage process. Firstly and most obviously it has to be produced, following this it must then be distributed, and finally exhibited. Before the introduction of the studio system in the 1920s all of these processes were controlled separately. Although this gave the makers of films, such as directors and producers, room to express their creativity it placed a heavy constraint upon the amount of movies that could be made, and financial profits. However, despite Hollywood's uneasy birth, by the 1920s it had become one of the worlds leading film producers (Dirks, 2002). This was largely due to the introduction of the producer, or studio syste Cinema is a collaborative art so it is difficult to determine the influence of one particular person on a film. Character and Landscape: The Interlocking Elopement of Isolation According to Michael Budd in his essay, "A Home in the Wilderness", the Western genre is "based" on distinct "oppositions" that operate to complicate character relations and move the plot forward (2). Within these various oppositions, Budd highlights one of the most prominent is the juxtaposing "settlement and wilderness" which can be seen at the forefront of films such as Ride Lonesome directed by Budd Boetticher in 1959 (2). In Ride Lonesome, the main character of Ben Brigade is an aging bounty hunter that seeks revenge against a bandit that murdered his Wife; Landscape in the film is used to demonstrate the volume of isolation he feels that ineptly separates him from the ... In showing this shot from her perspective, a distinct juxtaposition of separating landscape from civilization is demonstrated as she stands from her porch looking out. Some people might take those opportunities to direct there attention different matters and others might just shrug them off. However, from the view of a feminist, it could mean suffering through stereotypical depictions of women and wanting to hurl your flatscreen out the window. To put it simply, the way society tends to view women is far from being harmless. On November 9, 2013, Pantene came out with a feminist–themed ad campaign in the Philippines that quickly spread throughout the world. The video featured a man and a woman facing a typical workplace double standard. The male in the classy suit is called a boss, but the female in her little black dress is bossy. When giving a speech, he's persuasive, but she's being pushy. At the end of the commericial the female twists around and words appear onscreen: "Don't let labels hold you back. Be strong and shine." • 40. Jane Austen 's Novel And The World Of Books Novels are a unique form of writing that brings about a new style in the world of books. Novel by its definition is a new kind different from anything ever before. These books range from the greats to the recently printed because novels only have to be new for when they came out. So for instance Pride and Prejudice was novel when it came out in 1813 just like how Mrs. Dalloway was novel when it came out in 1925. Although these novels seem to be fiction, if not realistic fiction, it is common to wonder how the authors came up with these ideas for their books. In actuality most authors take experiences that they had from their lives and incorporated them into the story. Often after researching an author one can see that there are many parallels between their novel and their actual life. Some aspects can be from other situations outside of ones personal life, but ultimately authors create much of their stories based off of life experiences and can be seen in Housekeeping, The Passion, and Thomas and Beulah. Growing up in Sandpoint Idaho was the first influence that Marilynne Robinson had when it comes to writing her stories. In this instance it has influenced her in her writing of Housekeeping to have a more western and Midwestern feel to there locations. On top of that she includes many rural factors into her stories other than Housekeeping referencing her life growing up in rural Idaho. One of the more notable factors in this comparison in Housekeeping is the town of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During my visit I viewed works of art from the Lonesome Dove collection. The first piece of work I critiques was the photograph "Crossing the Rio Grande" taken by Bill Wittliff. This photo was taken on the set of the Lonesome Dove in 1988. What stood out to me was the significance of how real this photo is. So many slaves have tried to cross this river to escape persecution and slavery. Although, in this instance the photo is depicting three cowboys or horseman crossing the Rio Grande River in pursuit of cattle driving thousands of cattle from Texas up north to Montana. Although this photo is quite iconic in relation to this history of Texas I do not believe this piece of work along with many others from this exhibit should be deemed canonical. I personally rate this piece of work a four and a half, out of ten simply because while it is a great piece of art; it is the type of work I would like to hang in my bathroom above my toilet so while I am urinating I can view a nice "manly" piece of art. The second piece I critiqued was also a photo from the set of "Lonesome Dove". The second piece of art was titled "Gus on Porch," and was also taken by Bill Wittliff. Many of them desire to look like the models they see in the magazines. Unfortunately, this unrealistic expectation has led American women to judge their own beauty in some negative ways. However, a campaign by Dove has attempted to convince the other 96 percent of women that they are also beautiful. Dove Real Beauty Sketches is a short film produced in April 2013 as a part of Dove Real Beauty campaign. The purpose of this campaign is to show that "you are more beautiful than you think" by comparing the sketches of self–description and the descriptions from strangers. At the beginning of the film, over lightly soft music, a group of female participants from different ages briefly talk about their appearance, and how they wish they can be somehow different. Then, they are called back into a warehouse where a man named Gil Zamora, who is a FBI trained forensic artist, is waiting in front of a drafting board with his back to them and separated by a curtain. He asks them about their hair color, chin, and their most prominent feature. At the same time, he draws sketches based on how they describe themselves, and then draw the same people with the strangers describing them. • 48. Beauty Standards : The Positive Effects Of The Standards... Beauty standards are portrayed everywhere: on magazines, social media, ads, commercials, and even flaunted among peers. While the ideals are supposed to promote health awareness, fitness motivation, and self love, it unfortunately results in many unfavorable consequences. Women are constantly "penalized for not being beautiful and at the same time are stigmatized, even pathologized, for not feeling beautiful, for having low self–esteem, for engaging in behaviors like dieting and excessive exercising, or for having eating disorders" (Johnston and Taylor 954). Beauty standards are unrealistic and unhealthy to pursue, and misinforms the public on what true beauty is. While not all beauty image ideals promote negative feelings and dissatisfaction, many believe that the negative effects far outweighs any positive effects. There have been many attempts to validate our current beauty standards. For example, critics have argued that while there has been research showing the negative effects, "there are also studies that found no effect or even positive effects of these media portrayals on young women" (Arendt, et al 2). Also, while many people accuse beauty of being arbitrary, it is simply not the case. As F. Nahai states in his article "Evolutionary Beauty", "The quest to define standards of beauty is not new. One of the earliest to seek insight into the elusive qualities of beauty was the Greek philosopher Pythagoras. He believed that beauty was intertwined with static ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Analysis of Rita Dove’s, “Daystar” C Stevens 07/09/2010 Professor Kierath English 102.212 Analysis of Rita Dove's, "Daystar" "Daystar" by Rita Dove is an expressive poem, which centers on the main character, a young mother and wife, who internally struggles with her burdensome, daily duties, which creates a lack of freedom in her world. Dove's choice of words lets the reader empathize with her confined life. In this poem, irony exists for the mere fact that from birth to adulthood the female population is brought up to feel fulfilled by simply becoming a wife and mother; however, this poem describes the monotonous duties and the joyless bond that can be between husband and wife. As the poem opens, Dove begins with a metaphor that entertains the idea of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Later that night when Thomas roller over and lurched into her, she would open her eyes and think of the place that was hers" this proves the point that she cannot even express herself sexually because she does not feel as if she has control in the situation. Her mind wanders elsewhere, in a place where she is her own master, instead of what is reality. Additionally, the main character's husband shows some selfish tendencies in the fact that he may not notice his wife's discontentment with his affection. However, this may also present the lack of communication between man and wife and therefore may cause a sense of isolation from her husband. The main character possesses the characteristics of most young women, a full plate of responsibility and the lack of freedom that can wither away a person's soul. My response to this poem is that I strongly respect the author for bringing up such a controversial issue such as discontentment with being a stay–at–home mother, since this is usually to be expected of women. Dove explains the poem delicately and leaves the underlying sense that she may have possibly been through the situation herself. This being said, her imagery is wonderfully used and the metaphor of the doll being slumped over is a brilliant way to reflect upon the main character's feelings and actions. The irony comes into play, in my opinion, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He loves to fondle soft things, like mice, puppies and rabbits, even a small piece of velvet." Through the eyes of Lennie and George the audience sees the special relationship that they share. However there is a larger theme at play in the film. Though George has Lennie by his side, Lennie's companionship seems to offer George very little relief from his loneliness. The people they encounter and the irony of the duo's situation portray the theme of loneliness in the film. The film begins with a scene of George and Lennie running from a posse of men with dogs and guns. After escaping their pursuers they are left on a train to nowhere, all alone. This is the first time that George and Lennie's loneliness is revealed. In a following scene their isolation is confirmed as they walk down an empty road taking them to another chance at work. On the way, George notices that Lenny is playing with something. George finds that Lennie has a dead mouse. Lennie has a habit of getting mice and petting them until they die. When George takes ... • 62. Carine Mccandless The Wild Analysis Essay "I was confident I could provide enough indirect clues for readers to understand that, to no small degree, Chris's seemingly inexplicable behavior during the final years of his life was in fact explained by the volatile dynamics of the McCandless family while he was growing up" (Krakauer: The Wild Truth 9). Many readers may view Chris, or Alex, as an individual who deems reproachable in terms of his drive to endure the wild, and live solely off of the land. However, they are unaware of the prohibitive memoir Chris retains in relation to his family. Krakauer strives to accomplish an "indirect" insinuation to the reader that Chris upheld a non–healthy relationship with his first hand relatives, and that his irrational behavior was acted upon this occurrence. This coherently leads to Krakauer's indirect characterization of Christopher as that of enigmatic and unsubstantiated in terms of mental competence. In accumulation, it illustrates that other individuals, such as Krakauer or his readers, renowned that the assertiveness in which he alleged in was not so representative of a ... McCandless envies forward to develop a prodigious instance in which she had reached a point of hopelessness and inferior ingenuity. With providing subjective, private quotation, Carine easily elucidates the element of imagery inscribed in her own thoughts and words. Faith is a predominant occurrence in Carine's livelihood, and as she rests her body down onto the floor below the cross in her church, and her tears descend into the carpet, the situation illustrates that Carine is upset at her lord as she heeded her God to protect her from harm. Although the text does not directly show the situation, it becomes evident that she impulsively questions her faith as she begins to outburst seemingly unheeded and disregarded questions of ... At the cusp of Autumn, it all began. The necessary foliage is sprinkled purposely around the gutters. There She Goes, is playing in the background. This is Gilmore Girls, at its best. Hold back your flashbacks. Stop thinking of Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, Seventh Heaven, or any other 90's teenage crap drama. This show is so much more than a single mom, a budding teenage daughter, a controlling relationship, a Connecticut town, or an eccentric neighbor. At its core, Gilmore Girls stands as the essence of who I am. Now a days, it is considered a social priority to find favor in current mind bending intellectual feasts of television. A young scholar such as myself, is expected to be elbow deep in the latest Aaron Sorkin. Yet, I cling to the wholesome, extinct WB network. If that makes me a phony, a goon, or a pretentious soccer mom, so be it. Through and through, I have watched all seven seasons eight times. At twelve years old I entered the world. Les Nuits D Ete By Hector Berlioz Amy Shuford 5 April 2011 Music History II Research Paper – Les Nuits d'Ete Dr. Christina Reitz An Analysis of Hector Berlioz's Les Nuits d'Ete Born in 1803, in the village of La Côte–Saint– André, France, Hector Berlioz produced some of the most invigorating and exciting music of the Romantic period (Holoman, 1, 6). Romanticism primarily focused on subjectivism, therefore people were concentrating more on their emotions and spirituality and less on logical explanations for the problems of humanity. Those of the Romantic period valued nature and depended upon the creativity of artists in order to gain a deeper and different outlook on the world, one that was not strictly rational. Of all the Romantic art forms, music, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tonal tension portrays the anger and confusion that the character is experiencing. During the beginning of the movement, the vocal line is given much freedom for expression because the accompaniment is mainly comprised of block chords entering on each beat. As the emotions of the character intensify, the energy of accompaniment is also enhanced by repeating chords by use of compound eighth notes. The emotion of the vocalist and orchestra continues to increase because the vocalist makes their way to their high/head register to sustain notes to portray their anguish while the orchestra is playing arpeggiated chords set rhythmically to thirty–second notes. The movement ends with the vocalist sustaining and the orchestra arpeggiating the dominant (V) chord to leave the listener with a sense of unsettlement and discomfort (Berlioz, Les Nuits d'Ete). L'Absence (Absence) is the fourth movement and is very contrasting to Sur les Lagunes by means of emotion and tonality. The character singing is in a stage of grief when one may deny the occurrence of the death. The singer repeatedly pleads "Reviens, reviens ma bien aimee," which literally translates to "Return, return my beloved." Though the text is saddening, Berlioz set the song in the key of F# major which provides a bright and elevating sound. The accompaniment is minimal in this movement because it ... Society and our culture molds women's brains into believing that being thin is what will fulfill overall happiness. Being thin means you are more successful, loved, attractive, and overall truly beautiful. Thin women are seen as having an overall perfect life. Although, there is another form of woman that is seen as undesirable, hopeless, overall disliked by many. That form of woman is the curvy or larger female. If one were to go out on the street and gather a group of men and show them the thin vs. large female and which one is more attractive, most of them would say the thin is. As a result to this, we reject the larger women because they do not fit societies norms. Thin women are afraid to become this. In this way, our culture has created a monster. Every thin female will admit at least one time in their lives they have been worried about "getting fat" or "gaining more weight". When a thin female sees this, they are afraid they are becoming the monstrous other that is the larger female. • 74. The West in Film Essay examples The depiction of minorities, specifically women and Native Americans, in Western film has changed drastically from the early 1930's to the late 1980's. These changes represent the changing views of American society in general throughout the 20th century. In the early part of the century, women and Native Americans were depicted as a burden. Women were viewed as a form of property, helpless and needing support. These minorities were obstacles in the quest for manifest destiny by the United States. Western films during the early 20th century represent the ignorance of American culture towards minorities. As time progressed, society began to develop compassion for Native Americans and men began to see women as equals. The movie industry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These films were made when America was struggling with the idea of what it meant to be American and who was American. The view towards Native Americans during this period was that they were "savage", thus giving American expansionists the right to take over their land and ignore the rights of the Indians. Stagecoach is a classic western directed by John Ford. The central theme of this script "the passengers' forging a temporary community to defend themselves against the Indians and the desert" (Slotkin, 305) represents the societal views of the time. The frontier was a place of hope and new beginnings, with only the Indians in the way. Americans during this time period strongly supported this view of Native Americans as being an obstacle in American expansion. This is displayed not only in the movie but also in the fact that these expeditions were supported by the nation. The triumph of Americans over the Native Americans is a common theme in early westerns. While accurately depicting the invasion of Americans on Native American soil, Ford makes no attempt to suggest that these acts were immoral because during the 1930's this was not the point of view of Americans. " The depiction of Native Americans in Stagecoach is typical of the late 1930's. The Apache's are portrayed strictly as warriors who brutally fight the white invasion"(Yeck and McGreevey, 24). Americans, faced with the reality of an increasingly industrialized society, love the image of a man living out in the wilderness fending for himself against the dangers of the unknown. By the year 1900 there were few renegade Indians left in the country and the vast expanse of open land to the west of the Mississippi was rapidly filling with settlers. Cowboys represented a major part of the frontier spirit and Americans were eager to keep the romanticism of the west alive. (Hopkins County) Goodnight and Loving saw each others value in the partnership and realized the potential money to be earned. With Goodnight's Indian fighting skills and Loving's trail experience the two had great success. In 1866 they set out with two thousand cattle from Belknap, Texas to Fort Sumner on what would later be known as the Goodnight–Loving trail. Goodnight and Loving used the trail in 1866 and 1867 but stage lines, emigrants, and drovers made frequent use of the trail until almost 1900. Prince Rogers Nelson Biography Prince Rogers Nelson, the artist known as Prince who Thursday became "formerly" with a devastating finality at only 57, was so gifted it barely can be believed, let alone described. Thankfully, it hardly needs to be, because anyone who wasn't frightened off by his flagrancies and ambiguities could tell that this was a talent of the kind that rearranges what culture can do and what a human can be–the kind possessed, for instance, by two artists who predeceased him, his contemporary Michael Jackson and his elder by a dozen years David Bowie, and a very short list of other figures in pop–music history. He was one of the finest ever pop singers, one of the most incredible guitarists (the anecdote in which Eric Clapton once replied to the question "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" by saying "I don't know, ask Prince" is probably apocryphal but, on a higher plane, definitely correct), and one of the most indelible songwriters, most influential producers, best wearers (and removers) of clothing, and most electric semiotic manipulators.
