Editor's Notes
So from that I will touch upon these topics and there will be a section were I will answer questions. So with no further a due lets dig in to the fun stuff.
Part of communication is the setting, the context. And the basis for good communication is communicating the right thing in the right context. For instance if I call you a klutz, the effect would be one if I say that just after you spilled the milk, and a completely another if I call you that on the street.Framing the context of the conversation gives us the principal upon witch we evaluate the content.
Our research tells us that mobile phones are available on the level of 1.3 phones per person in Sweden, and that bluetooth i present in significant number of these. The trend is that the presence of bluetooth is on the climb as well. A rough figure considering new sells and how long the average phones is used before it renewed gives us that circa 80 % have the technology to access this guide system. But the most important point of this is that a significant amount of people today carry around the capability to access the system.
We believe that the basis for creating a system like this one is to get a win-win scenario. And a win-win where both parties understand the benefits for the other party. So for you to be willing to fill you mobile phone with our content it needs to give you something back. In more experience, or more of an experience on your terms.Museum wise the benefits are in saved money and time.
Our purpose with this test is to determine the level of complexity we can have.More choices means more complexity to the equation. The question turns in to what is the level of technically maturity our target audience has. When it comes to technical maturity we are all at different levels. Fore some the challenge posed by your phones pincode is enough for one day, and for other it light-years away. And this factors in to the service quality that can be delivered in having personalized content. So even if we agree that having completely personalized content offers the highest service quality, it also offers the greatest challenge.
And finding this balance is what wee are looking to do. The aspect of how service quality relates to usability. For instance how we all prefer different types of service at store, I prefer to walk in to a store and explore it on my own, just have a clerk come up and tell me, ”hi, I will be over here if you need me just give me a sign.” and my girlfriend wants to have some one that attacks here the moment she enters the store and start bringing her stuff. This type of service does not fit me at al, and I would even call it annoying.
So what we are testing and what you are testing there is obvious points of contact. And they make your side of this cake really interesting.
To get in to background to whywe are here and the morefun stuff.
So for just over 1 year ago the first serious talks with Britta Malmberg, Head of Education at the Museum, about the digital guide system took place. So to figure out what type of solution was the right one for them we were commissioned to investigate and suggest solutions that could fit.
through a broad survey, we concluded the following: Technical platform- Mobile”PROTOKOLL” Way of communicate- Bluetooth To not go into too much on technology, technical platforms, protocols and their properties. I will go directly to our conclusion. (but if you are interested to know more about the investigation and technology, please feel free to ask me after class) Our conclusions was that the most appropriate platform to use was mobile phones and bluetooth as the way to communicate with it. I will elaborate on this shortly.
After presenting the study to World culture museum, they became interested and curious about how a guide system with mobile phone and bluetooth could be like. We were asked to present and start developing complete solution.
The solution is the mobile-communications plattform Zoob.
A simple explanation of how Zoob works. In the picture you see the Bluetooth transmitter and a man with mobile phone. You will receive information most often in the form of a sign asking you to turn on your Bluetooth and receive the Guide.
You enable your bluetooth, if its not already enabled. The bluetooth transmitter has an adjustable range up to 100 m, which means we can easily reach those who are close enough to a specific place for it to be relevant or further away when its interesting to do so.
Now Zoobhavediscovered you, after a few short moments you will get an inquire.
In the first time you use the guide you will beasked if you want to download the applicationIf you say YES, the application is downloaded into your phone, after the download you will be asked if you want to install and run the application. You only have to do this the first time you enter the museum, afterwards Zoob will recognise you and wont unnecessarily prompt you to download the application again.
To get back to why we concluded that mobile phones and bluetooth is the way to go.In Sweden there are more than one mobile phone per person. AccessibilityBluetooth is now available in 97% of all new produced mobile phones and 80% of older models from 2006.Free for the userProximity based, which gives an incredibly high level of accuracy and relevance to the recipient.Future, the future looks bright, Bluetooth 3.0 will come out soon, which means a high transmission speed then you can stream HD video. Zoob is java based, which is supported in 70% of all mobiles. Android is built on more or less Java. Making Zoob available there as well.
This sign is present in the entrance aswell as the test exhibit, bollywood.
This is what you can do function wise today. You can get information about the museum and its current exhibitions. Location based content atBollywoodexhibition where you can download video/music clip and read further about the exhibition. These functions are at placeRead moreWatch picturesDownload video/picturesDownload ringtone
There are so many functions that are currently in development at Lubit HQ right now. But here is a handful of the most interesting.
The main portion of what we are building is smarter, meaner, leaner, more aware location based content.
The development of this content i mostly in the backend part of Zoob. Enabeling streaming video, games, all to make it up to the museum to limit what they whant to do.Our intention is that Zoob shall not be the limiter of what, where or when Zoob can be deployed.
Here you can se some of the other content deployment zones that can be used. You can for instance watch streaming videos from previous performances at the museum, or more in deept “behind the scenes” videos. Say from the making of the bollywood mega-boxoffice success “Om shanti Om”.
The point of having streaming video as a complement to downloadable video is that you are for one not limited to the available size one the mobile phone, and that you can start to watch before you have downloaded the hole video.Another one of the strengths with this function, is that you may offer a much larger library of films.
One of the most coveted features from the museum perspective, is a studies tool, where people can answer questions and give feedback to current exhibits and to other muse relevant topics. The digital format makes it easier for the museum toanalyze thecriticism and make changes in accordance with these.
Here we want to use your mobile camera and let people broadcast video to their friends or have it projecting on the website or on a screen at the museum. The webcast functionality gives you the possibility to share your experience with other.
Save dates, phonenumbers and otherimportant information about the museeum. Right in you pkonebook, calender. And usethemtogeher. Set reminders for exibits that you what to visit. See information aboutother museums in Gothenburg that might intresset you aswell.
My personal favorit is the functions that enable games, gaming and play. Use your phone as a gamepad for a game played on a big screen. Compete against you classmates in quizzes, tressurehunts, augmented reality games. This is what is in pipline right now. This is our 2010 vission of what Zoob will be.
