Like most local magazines – and unlike The New Yorker– Coast magazine has a circulation that corresponds to its target audience. Coast is a "monthly
regional lifestyle" magazine featuring "slices of Orange County life" ("About Us." Coast Magazine.). Marketing to Southern Californians in Orange
County, Coast delivers 51,500 copies per month to homes, hotels, newsstands, and public place racks throughout Orange County cities ("Coast 2015

New York Cityresidents but distributes copies throughout the nation. The New Yorker's nationwide circulation in spite of its local target market makes

Summary Of Emerson's The Age Of Innocence
A character who heeds Emerson's call to act on and "obey no law less than the internal law" pursues individualistic ambitions, relying on personal
beliefs and forming a life unburdened by customs or social norms. Ellen Olenska heeds Emerson's call by physically and mentally resisting the
domineering advances of New York's aristocratic socialites, escaping the bonds that so securely bind individual liberty and expression, and accepting a
life that should be so bold as to venture past the oppression of ballrooms and the shackles of conformity.
Ellen Olenska heeds Emerson's call by evading the jaws that so mercilessly snare personal autonomy and individuality, daring to be so brave as to don
outlandish attire and journey beyond the coercion of ballrooms and the chains of convention. In The Age of Innocence, the "Josephine look," is
depicted as "[a] headdress... [which] [was] carried out in the cut of the dark blue velvet gown [that] rather theatrically caught up under [the] bosom by
a girdle with a large old–fashioned clasp" was a style named after Josephine (1793–1814), the empress of Napoleon Boneparte (Wharton 7). In other
words, the "Josephine Look" was an elegant look that comprised of ornamental headbands and gowns that were fastened under the bosom and donned
over a sheer slip; it juxtaposed dramatically with the lace–covered dГ©colletГ©s and the prominent bodices that distinguished the dresses donned by
stylish American women in the 1870s. This deserves attention

Nederlander Theater: A Case Study
In the 1980s, the cost of staging a Broadway show soared so high that major shows have to run for more than two years to break even (showtime, 604).
The strong–willed individualistic producers were replaced by "artistic director, a general manager and various multi–producers.(showtime 604)" The
latter were made up by businessman and theater owners whose priority is to sell tickets rather than create art. What's more, the producers were less
willing to take risks both financially and artistically, which made Broadway productions bleaker(showtime 604). As for the production of Rent and The
Phantom of the Opera, the producers used different tactics to cope with the staggering cost. The rent cut cost on stage setting and location. They
abandoned the expensive curtains and fancy settings and used sculptures of "junk, wire and Christmas–tree lights" to symbolize different
sites(Wollman, 170).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The theater was unused for a long time because of its unfortunate location as well as "fraying carpet" and "peeling paint.(Wollman 174–175)" The
frugal theater not only saved cost but also perfectly fitted the musical's grunge aesthetic (Wollman 175). Cameron Mackintosh, on the other hand, used
another way to deal with the high cost in Broadway. He first staged the play in London where most theaters are government subsidized and more
experimental. Once the audiences gave positive feedback, he moved to New york where the cost is three time of that of london(showtime 626–627).
This way, he reduced risk to a minimum. To withstand the often negative critic reviews, he also used aggressive marketing campaigns to saturate the
media with his logos of the shows, therefore made his shows "critic proof"(showtime

Triangle Factory Fire Research Paper
Section 1: Identification and evaluation of sources During this investigation, I will be analyzing the aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory
Fire that occured in New York City on March 25, 1911. I will specifically be addressing the question, "To what extent did the Triangle Factory Fire
of 1911 help give workers the reforms that they had already been demanding?" To investigate this question to its fullest, it is important to look into
sources that help shed light on what happened after the fire. An article from the New York Times titled MANY NOW TELL OF FIRE TRAPS, has
many subheadings that go into depth about what was going on after the fire. The newspaper detailed that a civic committee was organized to collect

Oklahoma Pop Culture
Oklahoma! the musical, released in 1943, proved to be one of the most successful musicals of its time, holding nearly 2,212 performances before
closing fifteen years after its opening. Despite its folk culture and overall simplicity, the classic love–triangle story between Curly McLain, Laurey
Williams, and Jud Fry proved to be just what America wanted and needed. An analysis of the historical time period during which Oklahoma! the
musical was created reveals a direct link between the show's music and American culture. Using 1940s American ideals as a lens through which to
view society, I will examine the role of family, gender–roles, and heroism in helping to shape American identity during War War II. The Need for an
American Opera During World War II, America strived to differentiate itself from the "evil" European Axis powers and present itself to the world as
a democratic superpower. This desire to create a national identity and culture was reflected not just in politics, but also in art and in music. Up until
this point, American music, and specifically opera, was largely influenced by European ideals and was regarded as a purely European art form.
Composer Virgil Thomson once received a letter from a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

far from traditional opera to be considered opera, and yet the show was more than just a musical because of its integrated storytelling. Prior to the
release of Oklahoma!, American storytelling through art was fairly segregated. For example, operas at the Metropolitan Opera house showcased music
and acting, while American ballets showcased music and dance. Oklahoma!, however, was one of the first musicals to integrate elements of all three:

Broadway Theatres: The Great White Way
The Broadway Musical has been a sensational part of the American culture ever since it started in the 19th century located in Manhattan, New York
City; however, they were not always in Manhattan. A musical is a play or movie in which singing and dancing plays an essential part. Musicals
developed from light opera in the early 20th century. Musicals originated in England; however, musicals developed into their modern form in the
Broadway theatre located in New York City. Broadway is also known as "The Great White Way" because of the millions of lights that light up the night
that surround the billboards and theatre marquees throughout Broadway.
There are exactly forty Broadway theatres, yet there are four main theatres that are located on Broadway which are, The Palace, The Marquis, The
Broadway, and The Winter Garden. All Broadway shows were ceased during the time of the Revolutionary War, but after the Civil War ended 70 years
later, the Broadway shows began to return, which continuously increased in popularity. The score of the musical takes... Show more content on

After the overture is the opening number, and according to Mark Steyn, the opening number "defines the (main character's) motivation, kick–starts the

opening number. Once the opening number is completed, next is what is typically known as the "I Want" song. The "I Want" song demonstrates what
the character(s) desires or what their motivations are. Following this song comes the "11 O'clock" number, which is a song that fills the audience with
spirit before the final number. Finally, the last part of a Broadway musical is the finale. The finale ties the whole musical together and leaves a

Peter Gelb's Leadership Of The Met: New York City Opera
These issues have been faced head on by the current general manager of the Met, and publically addressed more than ever before, with in–depth
interviews by the New Yorker, and the bankruptcy of opera companies around it, like New York City Opera. Peter Gelb took over leadership of the
Met in 2006, and quickly detailed a plan to "expand the opera's showings, attract new viewers (without losing any of the current attendees) and
reduce staging costs" , addressing the three main concerns of the board of directors as well as the public. One of the main issues plaguing opera
companies around the world as has been how to engage younger audiences, who may view opera as a medium out of their reach, financially as well as
socially. It's seen as a medium... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gelb grossly underestimated the battle he would face making his plan come to fruition. In taking this proposal to the orchestra committee, he found
fierce rebuttal and incited arguments as to whether it wasn't his leadership that had caused these problems, not the salaries of the opera's employees.
The orchestra committee leaders noted his grandiose sets, his last–minute changes resulting in over–hire and over–time charges, his disregard and lack
of respect for the orchestra's role on the stage, and a general recklessness with his spending. It took months of negotiations, and the input of an outside
mediator as well as an outside financial expert to evaluate Gelb's work, for the conclusion of these arguments to come about. And so with threats of a
strike that could delay the beginning of the 2014 season, and weeks of back–and–forth in the press and conference meeting rooms, Mr. Gelb eventually
struck a deal with the orchestra union, and then with the stagehands Local I union, to keep the Met afloat. The unions took a pay cut of a little less
than half of what Mr. Gelb had originally asked for, and in turn they gained a large cut in operating expenses from his side of the budget. In addition,
for the first time ever for an opera orchestra, their side of the negotiations was able to win them more transparency and oversight of Mr. Gelb's role and
decisions, so that they further contribute to the curbing of the Metropolitan Opera's

Kirstein wanted to persuade Balanchine to relocate to the United States. Her dream came true – in 1934, they created the School of American Ballet.
Balanchine first choreographed work was Serenade, performed to the music of Tchaikovsky, was created as a workshop for students, but also as a
production that premiered in New York. In 1935, Kirstein and Balance set up a touring company of dancers from the school and named it the
American Ballet. Later that year, the Metropolitan Opera invited the American Ballet to become its resident ballet, with Balanchine as the ballet
master. Even though the program was very successful, Balanchine left the Met in 1938 to teach at the School of American Ballet and work in musical
theater and film. In 1941, he and Kirstein established the American Ballet Caravan and toured South America with Balanchine's new works, Concerto
Barocco and Ballet Imperial. Then in 1944, became the artistic director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where he created Raymonda and La

Compumentative Essay : Life Opportunities In High School
"Life Opportunities" "Make every day count and never forget how precious life is", my mother would always say to me. Growing up I would always
remember her quoting this, however I did not truly appreciate the quote as I should have until I matured. Just like most children, I enjoyed my
childhood and grew up surrounded by friends. Each day similar to the one before. I attended elementary and high school at Hatton, home of the mighty
blue Hatton Hornets. This school was moderately undersized, so therefore I knew everyone, which leads me to my senior year in high school. The
high school where you can still hear the boisterous laughter and feel your stomach tightening, while tears roll down your cheek from enjoying the
actions nearby. My Senior year was bursting with opportunities, these events truly exposed how valuable our experiences throughout life are,
especially time with loved ones. In high school, I was a part of my schools 1A band, playing trombone and baritone, I mainly enjoyed my part in the

work diligently and effectively even when everyone was tired, the kind of tired that makes one queasy or nauseous if they have to continue working.
Although the members were young and the group was small in quantity the quality was superior, through persistence we were able to gain a once in a
lifetime experience! We were chosen as a whole band to march in the New York CitySt. Patrick's Day Parade that was streamed live on national
television. There were numerous parts involved in this journey that I will never take for granted even if they were not the highlight of the trip,
including travelling to New York City. Students and parents of various ages filled the charter bus that had a journey of over twenty plus hours, nearly
one thousand miles from our starting location. At first the ride was tolerable, then time persisted. People became irritable, drained, hungry, and do not

Taking a Look at Castle Clinton
National Monuments
National monuments were originally designed to protect things that were of historic or scientific interest. Although now and days we tend to perceive
national monuments as part of our countries heritage; they allow us to display the respect and recognition that we have towards our country and the
individuals who sacrificed a great deal in order for us to live comfortably in this wonderful country. The antiquities grant of 1906 gave the president the
authority to designate national monuments and since then the president and congress have created more than 100 national monuments. The various
agencies that manage national monuments are the National Park Service, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, or BLM.
Castle Clinton formerly known as Castle Garden is a monument that symbolizes America as a country that welcomes people from all over the world to
come for better opportunities. Castle Clinton is located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island and represents the growth of the city and also the
growth of the country. It was initially built to prevent the British from invading in 1812; Castle Clinton never saw combat but it did provide a way
for the military to have a strategic presence at the northern edge of the New York Harbor. In 1824 the Castle was turned over to the city and was

Music as a Stress Reliever
They say music is one of the biggest stress relievers while acting gives you a chance to engulf yourself into a character and be someone else for a
change. Together these two create Musical Theater, possibly one of the best two combinations known to man. Musical Theater is a worldwide form of
entertainment that has been around since ancient times and exhibits emotion through a series of acts which include singing, dancing and scripted
acting. Different areas of the world follow unique storylines which are relevant to their past and current events. The beginning of Musical Theater
dates back to ancient times and originates mainly from the Romans, Greeks and Natya Shastas and interestingly enough, it also dates back to The
Harlem Renaissance Era. In the third BC Roman comedies began to include dance and music. The Romans attached metal slabs to the bottom of their
shoes helping them to dance better. These shoes were called Sabilla shoes which now have evolved into tap shoes. In the fifth BC ancient Greeks
followed in the Romans footsteps by including dance and music into their theatrical plays. PARAGRAPH ABOUT ROMAN RENAISSANCE ERA
Later in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, religious dramas with chants and poetic lines transformed slowly into musicals as they began to add
music into the dramas. In the 1700s ballad and comic operas, which were considered early Musicals, grew in popularity throughout Britain, France and
Germany (TheatricalMusical.com). While Musicals

Lincoln, brother played on Broadway? Or that Broadway wasn't always in the same spot. Also, many famous actors today started out on Broadway
before making it to Hollywood. Even some plays weren't that famous until they were showed on Broadway. For example, The Phantom of the Opera,
or Hamilton! Also, people also fail to realize that through many national tragedies, Broadway always found a way to show their support for their
country. But honestly, how did it all start? In 1811, theNew York cityplanners began a massive building execution. In 1835, Mayor Cornelius Van
Wyck invited people to Manhattan to "move up there and enjoy the clean air!" In the early nineteenth century, the Theatre District between 41st street
and 53rd street, was mainly just farmland and land owned by families all over. Broadway holds over 40 theatres at the moment, but it really wasn't
until the 1920's–1930's that theatres' started to be built down these streets. In the 1930s, Broadway experienced a major crisis mainly caused upon the
invention of the films having sound. About 6 decades after the Mayor started inviting people to come live in Manhattan, one of the first theatres on
42nd street was built. Willie (Oscar) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Broadway History
From the Ancient Greeks, to the Romans, and all the way to present day New York City, theatre is a tradition that has been passed down for
thousands of years. The art of expression through live performance is something that will never go out of style. The history of Broadway is a
rollercoaster with flourishing highs and devastating lows, but they both have significantly contributed to shaping the industry into the prosperous
business that it is today. It has been a very long road in the Theater District to get Broadway to where it is now, dating all the way back to the 1800s.

It all started with a man named William Wheatley, who was the manager of the very prestigious 3,200 seat venue known as Niblo Garden. He was
always on stage as a young boy, so taking over The Garden would keep him out of the spotlight. Little did he know that purchasing the rights to The
Black Crook would do the complete opposite. It is said that The Black Crook was actually a terrible show, but Wheatley only helped produce it to
keep his theater in business. Apparently, the musical had an absolutely ridiculous plot line and insane characters. It was a bizarre mixture of stolen
ideas from well–known shows...I interpreted it as a cross between Dracula and Cinderella. Shockingly, this show sold out almost every single night. It
even broke records for being the longest running show, lasting for over 470

"Everything comes from somewhere," said Luger. He finds that his passion for jazz music and Italian–American music can be easily interconnected
since all music influences one another. One thing I found interesting about Luger's music is that when I asked him to tell me more about the Italian
music that he plays, he corrected me, and stated that the music he plays should be referred to as Italian–American because Italian music has a broad
range of styles. He said as much as he loves to play instruments and sing, he is aware that he does not have an opera voice, which would allow him to
sing authentic Italian music. Classical Italian music is considered to be Opera. Opera was born in Italy in 1600 during the Italian Renaissance and by
the late 16th century. Now, when thinking about Classical Italian music, I think of one of the most famous Italian opera composers, Giuseppe Verdi
(1813–1901). Verdi's works are most noted for their emotional intensity, tuneful melodies, and dramatic characterizations. Verdi transformed the Italian
opera into a unified musical and dramatic entity. Verdi composed over twenty

Analysis Of Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story
Leonard Bernstein worked with Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, and Stephen Sondheim to produce the 1957 Broadway musical West Side Story, a
Romeo and Juliet–like love story between Polish American Tony and Puerto Rican Maria in New York's West Side (Peyser 261; Fishko). Bernstein
composed the music for the production. Each artist was renowned and therefore understood that their unique, artistic approaches were successful,
essentially ensuring that there would be disagreements in the creation of the musical. For instance, Laurents, the musical's author, reveals that
Bernstein seemed to almost dominate the development of the storyline, but Laurents was adamant that he would not write a "Bernstein opera" (Peyser
263). Moreover, Bernstein felt... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Urban gangs were increasingly relevant during the 1950s, particularly in 1955, when gang warfare in cities frequently made newspaper headlines
(Gutmann). The relevance of the musical's plot to its time period reveals that one of the reasons behind West Side Story's success is simple: the
musical, to a certain extent, was relatable to the majority of its audience's life.
Bernstein became the first American–born director of a major American orchestra––the New York Philharmonic––in 1958 (Peyser 298). This historical
event shook the musical world since Bernstein was never like the other prominent musicians of his time. Classical music was always seen as a form of
high culture. That Bernstein was a homosexual, middle–class Jewish–American–characteristics that were not well–received in the musical field– made
it difficult for him to be appointed to any prestigious musical position. These characteristics acted as an obstacle to his mentor Koussevitzky's interest in
Bernstein inheriting his position as conductor of the Boston Symphony. In addition to Bernstein's inherent traits, Bernstein's involvement with the
show business and popular music, like jazz, did not appeal to the Boston Symphony's trustees since Bernstein did not seem like a serious classical artist.
American composer Morton Gould later revealed that one of the trustees "hoped On the Town [the musical composed by Bernstein] would fail because

Geo World Cities Economic and Cultural Authority Essay
Question: Demonstrate why world cities are powerful centres of economic and cultural authority
A world city is a large city that has been outstripped its natural urban network and become part of an international global system. World cities have
become the central connecting point for the multiplicity of linkages and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economy, and its social
and political systems. According to the 2004 GaWC studies world cities can be ranked based on their provision of 'advanced producer services' such as
accountancy, advertising, finance and law. In 2008 the rankings according to the GaWC determined thatLondon and New York were Alpha ++ cities

Hence, world cities influence the flow of both finance and investment throughout the world thus resulting in economic authority.
World cities are markets for a vast range of goods and services as they are areas of massive accumulations of wealth and have extraordinary purchasing
power. The importance of these cities as markets is shown by patterns of concentrated retailing in high–order consumer goods, such as clothing,
jewellery, and art. Streets such as Fifth Avenue in New York are famous for their retailing of very expensive goods.
Cultural Authority
World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have theatres, opera houses, large entertainment. They host
major cultural and sporting events ranging from art exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa's world cup in Munich
both were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very strong cultural authority with the New York Times reporting
that in 2010 48.7 million people visited New York spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45 million in 2009. New
York is home to a range of museums such as the museum of modern art and the Guggenheim, Broadway, famous universities such as Colombia and
NYU, and centres for the arts such as the Julliard School and Lincon centre. Therefore the cultural authority of a world city stems from its ability to

Italian Immigrants In America
Since it declared independence from Great Britain in 1776, the United States has been called a land of opportunity for immigrants. Predating the
founding of the nation itself, Italians have been drawn to the new world. Starting in 1492 with Christopher Columbus, and even leading up to the
American Civil War, Italians have come to this country in search of a new life. However, it was not until the 20th century that Italians, similar to other
Europeans and Asians, began to arrive in the United States in waves, and social impact the nation. After the Italians had left economically unstable and
famine–ridden Italy, they arrived in America hoping to find a prosperous land. Yet, their idea of life in America got derailed by the way people socially

These forms of entertainment consist of everything from the arts to sporting events. The Italians dominated the arts in both Europe and America.
The Italian language itself has been known as the language of music for centuries since all musical terms are written in the Italian language. When
Italians immigrated to the United States, they brought along with them their love and talent for the arts. This naturally included the opera, which
has been widely associated with a popular outing for people of the upper class. Yet, the opera doesn't have to be viewed in this way, for the opera
is for everybody and tells stories through music. In fact, famous plays and songs are turned opera including that of William Shakespeare's Romeo
and Juliet. Art is another thing that comes with the Italian heritage, and Florence is regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and the
resurgence of art. It was these works of the time that inspired many other Americans of Italian descent to create their own artwork such as Ralph
Fasanella. Many musicians are regarding as being Italian. One musician, Frank Sinatra, has been known for his music career and is widely regarded
as a popular musician. However, according to sources Sinatra has been viewed as a mafia member by many people who were prejudice towards the
Italian race. This ethnic prejudice can largely be associated with the novel and film The Godfather. The 1969

sets out in Mae's dark blue brougham, one that still has their wedding varnish on it. In this symbol of Newland and Mae's marriage, Newland
dreams of seeing Ellen walk down the ramp to his embrace. With desire and ignorance towards society's constraints, Newland feels a rush to ask
Ellen to run away with him. Ellen realizes how blind Newland is being to the realities of their forbidden love although he tells her, "I want– I want
somehow to get away with you into a world where words like that–––categories like that–––won't exist". The word Newland is referring to is "mistress"
when Ellen asks if she would be a mistress or a wife to Newland in the future. At this moment in the novel, Newland seems more pathetic than
reasonable as Ellen replies condescendingly, "Oh my dear–––where is that country? Have you ever been there?"(306) . While Ellen seems to know that
they will both make the choice of keeping their family name happy, Newland seems set on choosing his passion for Ellen. Although the two do not
pursue their love as the novel closes, due to fear of family name and society's response, Newland's question to Ellen almost has him completely
lovestruck. When the novel began, Ellen was the one who wore the dresses that showed too much skin and invited Newland to sit with her somewhat
promiscuously. However, Ellen's familiarity with her own stand out self leads Newland to have a completely skewed perspective with Ellen remains in

This, and other British ballad operas, ballets and pantomimes, formed the majority of musicals offered on American stages in the beginning of the
1800's. The roots of the music we know today can be dated back to the French and Viennese operettas. Operettes are light musical comedies that
would often provide broad satire and wit to the stage, combined with bright melodies and high energy. These would be the blueprint for all musical
theatre to come. The Black Crook was the first piece to fit modern musicals. The play premiered in 1866 in New York City and was a staggering
success. Once the modern musical was developed there was more opportunity for theoretical advances. Broadway saw its fair share of musicals during
the 1890's and the number continued to grow during the 20th century. The theatre experienced a boom in business with the start of World War I; given
the devastation of the battlefield audiences flocked to the stages in order to get some escapism. As the 20th century continued musical theatre began to
grow in popularity and quality. The public ruled heavily in favor of musicals, so the 1980s brought a succession of long–running "Brit hits" to
Broadway, such as Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon.

Some of the teaching that Confucius taught
that we practice today include humaneness or benevolence. Confucius stresses that we must
encourage our superiors to act ethically and to lose their position if the ruler persists in unethical
behavior. Most of our political laws are governed by this virtue. In the four discussions of
Aristotle's physics it is implied that political views should be governed by material cause,
formal cause, efficient and final causes. Aristotle seemed to be more focused on science and
politics more so than Confucius being more of a humanitarian.
The practice and beliefs Confucius and Aristotle suggested have shaped our country and the manner in
which we behave towards one another. Possessing virtue or a sort of charisma comes from being a
good person and treating others good.
This country is built on ethics and virtue and doing what is right. The situation in Iraq where our American soldiers were torturing the prisoners and

Critical Analysis Of Wallace Stevens's 'The Inhabitants'
The daily ritual of leaving work in the city to arrive home in the suburbs has been masterfully depicted in the poem, The Inhabitants. By taking the New
Critical analysis approach in using scientific theory, we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self–contained within the text. In our analysis
of The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as defined by Mary Klages, in her book Literary Theory: A Guide for the
Perplexed, is a way of thinking that works to find the fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made." (p 31). The number 5 is a
very powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see the power of the 5 paradigm and how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the
poem's very meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, "A Postcard From the Volcano", and reduced the story
to its bare bones. Getting to the basics of Guest's piece, we can simply start with its structural rhythm of five stanzas. Each stanza is a self–contained
unit that describes the transition from the city to the suburbs. In the first stanza the descriptive is of the onset of departing office workers pilgrimage,
"Like people in an opera on the street," gracefully orchestrate an orderly descent from their office building to the bus stop. Not the mad dash out the

Coast Magazine Case Study Highlights Regional Focus

  • 1. Coast Magazine Case Study Like most local magazines – and unlike The New Yorker– Coast magazine has a circulation that corresponds to its target audience. Coast is a "monthly regional lifestyle" magazine featuring "slices of Orange County life" ("About Us." Coast Magazine.). Marketing to Southern Californians in Orange County, Coast delivers 51,500 copies per month to homes, hotels, newsstands, and public place racks throughout Orange County cities ("Coast 2015 Media Information."). The magazine targets Orange County residents, so it distributes copies to them. In contrast, The New Yorker magazine targets New York Cityresidents but distributes copies throughout the nation. The New Yorker's nationwide circulation in spite of its local target market makes so bizarre ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Summary Of Emerson's The Age Of Innocence A character who heeds Emerson's call to act on and "obey no law less than the internal law" pursues individualistic ambitions, relying on personal beliefs and forming a life unburdened by customs or social norms. Ellen Olenska heeds Emerson's call by physically and mentally resisting the domineering advances of New York's aristocratic socialites, escaping the bonds that so securely bind individual liberty and expression, and accepting a life that should be so bold as to venture past the oppression of ballrooms and the shackles of conformity. Ellen Olenska heeds Emerson's call by evading the jaws that so mercilessly snare personal autonomy and individuality, daring to be so brave as to don outlandish attire and journey beyond the coercion of ballrooms and the chains of convention. In The Age of Innocence, the "Josephine look," is depicted as "[a] headdress... [which] [was] carried out in the cut of the dark blue velvet gown [that] rather theatrically caught up under [the] bosom by a girdle with a large old–fashioned clasp" was a style named after Josephine (1793–1814), the empress of Napoleon Boneparte (Wharton 7). In other words, the "Josephine Look" was an elegant look that comprised of ornamental headbands and gowns that were fastened under the bosom and donned over a sheer slip; it juxtaposed dramatically with the lace–covered dГ©colletГ©s and the prominent bodices that distinguished the dresses donned by stylish American women in the 1870s. This deserves attention ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Nederlander Theater: A Case Study In the 1980s, the cost of staging a Broadway show soared so high that major shows have to run for more than two years to break even (showtime, 604). The strong–willed individualistic producers were replaced by "artistic director, a general manager and various multi–producers.(showtime 604)" The latter were made up by businessman and theater owners whose priority is to sell tickets rather than create art. What's more, the producers were less willing to take risks both financially and artistically, which made Broadway productions bleaker(showtime 604). As for the production of Rent and The Phantom of the Opera, the producers used different tactics to cope with the staggering cost. The rent cut cost on stage setting and location. They abandoned the expensive curtains and fancy settings and used sculptures of "junk, wire and Christmas–tree lights" to symbolize different sites(Wollman, 170).... The theater was unused for a long time because of its unfortunate location as well as "fraying carpet" and "peeling paint.(Wollman 174–175)" The frugal theater not only saved cost but also perfectly fitted the musical's grunge aesthetic (Wollman 175). Cameron Mackintosh, on the other hand, used another way to deal with the high cost in Broadway. He first staged the play in London where most theaters are government subsidized and more experimental. Once the audiences gave positive feedback, he moved to New york where the cost is three time of that of london(showtime 626–627). This way, he reduced risk to a minimum. To withstand the often negative critic reviews, he also used aggressive marketing campaigns to saturate the media with his logos of the shows, therefore made his shows "critic proof"(showtime ... Triangle Factory Fire Research Paper Section 1: Identification and evaluation of sources During this investigation, I will be analyzing the aftermath of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire that occured in New York City on March 25, 1911. I will specifically be addressing the question, "To what extent did the Triangle Factory Fire of 1911 help give workers the reforms that they had already been demanding?" To investigate this question to its fullest, it is important to look into sources that help shed light on what happened after the fire. An article from the New York Times titled MANY NOW TELL OF FIRE TRAPS, has many subheadings that go into depth about what was going on after the fire. It was actually called Longacre Square in the 19th century. It was named after London's carriage district (New York Times). Yes, Times Square used to be a horse and buggy neighborhood. Just imagine Times Square full of horses. It was named Longacre square because it was named after Long–acre in London. • 8. Oklahoma Pop Culture Oklahoma! the musical, released in 1943, proved to be one of the most successful musicals of its time, holding nearly 2,212 performances before closing fifteen years after its opening. Despite its folk culture and overall simplicity, the classic love–triangle story between Curly McLain, Laurey Williams, and Jud Fry proved to be just what America wanted and needed. An analysis of the historical time period during which Oklahoma! the musical was created reveals a direct link between the show's music and American culture. Using 1940s American ideals as a lens through which to view society, I will examine the role of family, gender–roles, and heroism in helping to shape American identity during War War II. The Need for an American Opera During World War II, America strived to differentiate itself from the "evil" European Axis powers and present itself to the world as a democratic superpower. This desire to create a national identity and culture was reflected not just in politics, but also in art and in music. Up until this point, American music, and specifically opera, was largely influenced by European ideals and was regarded as a purely European art form. Composer Virgil Thomson once received a letter from a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The New York Times once quoted Rodgers saying that Oklahoma was "neither an opera nor an operetta." Rodgers' believed that the music strayed too far from traditional opera to be considered opera, and yet the show was more than just a musical because of its integrated storytelling. Prior to the release of Oklahoma!, American storytelling through art was fairly segregated. For example, operas at the Metropolitan Opera house showcased music and acting, while American ballets showcased music and dance. Oklahoma!, however, was one of the first musicals to integrate elements of all three: music, acting, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Broadway Theatres: The Great White Way The Broadway Musical has been a sensational part of the American culture ever since it started in the 19th century located in Manhattan, New York City; however, they were not always in Manhattan. A musical is a play or movie in which singing and dancing plays an essential part. Musicals developed from light opera in the early 20th century. Musicals originated in England; however, musicals developed into their modern form in the Broadway theatre located in New York City. Broadway is also known as "The Great White Way" because of the millions of lights that light up the night that surround the billboards and theatre marquees throughout Broadway. There are exactly forty Broadway theatres, yet there are four main theatres that are located on Broadway which are, The Palace, The Marquis, The Broadway, and The Winter Garden. • 10. Peter Gelb's Leadership Of The Met: New York City Opera These issues have been faced head on by the current general manager of the Met, and publically addressed more than ever before, with in–depth interviews by the New Yorker, and the bankruptcy of opera companies around it, like New York City Opera. Peter Gelb took over leadership of the Met in 2006, and quickly detailed a plan to "expand the opera's showings, attract new viewers (without losing any of the current attendees) and reduce staging costs" , addressing the three main concerns of the board of directors as well as the public. One of the main issues plaguing opera companies around the world as has been how to engage younger audiences, who may view opera as a medium out of their reach, financially as well as socially. It's seen as a medium... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gelb grossly underestimated the battle he would face making his plan come to fruition. In taking this proposal to the orchestra committee, he found fierce rebuttal and incited arguments as to whether it wasn't his leadership that had caused these problems, not the salaries of the opera's employees. The orchestra committee leaders noted his grandiose sets, his last–minute changes resulting in over–hire and over–time charges, his disregard and lack of respect for the orchestra's role on the stage, and a general recklessness with his spending. It took months of negotiations, and the input of an outside mediator as well as an outside financial expert to evaluate Gelb's work, for the conclusion of these arguments to come about. And so with threats of a strike that could delay the beginning of the 2014 season, and weeks of back–and–forth in the press and conference meeting rooms, Mr. Gelb eventually struck a deal with the orchestra union, and then with the stagehands Local I union, to keep the Met afloat. The unions took a pay cut of a little less than half of what Mr. Gelb had originally asked for, and in turn they gained a large cut in operating expenses from his side of the budget. In addition, for the first time ever for an opera orchestra, their side of the negotiations was able to win them more transparency and oversight of Mr. Gelb's role and decisions, so that they further contribute to the curbing of the Metropolitan Opera's ... Together these two create Musical Theater, possibly one of the best two combinations known to man. In the third BC Roman comedies began to include dance and music. The Romans attached metal slabs to the bottom of their shoes helping them to dance better. These shoes were called Sabilla shoes which now have evolved into tap shoes. In the fifth BC ancient Greeks followed in the Romans footsteps by including dance and music into their theatrical plays. Bernstein became the first American–born director of a major American orchestra––the New York Philharmonic––in 1958 (Peyser 298). This historical event shook the musical world since Bernstein was never like the other prominent musicians of his time. Classical music was always seen as a form of high culture. This naturally included the opera, which has been widely associated with a popular outing for people of the upper class. Yet, the opera doesn't have to be viewed in this way, for the opera is for everybody and tells stories through music. In fact, famous plays and songs are turned opera including that of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Art is another thing that comes with the Italian heritage, and Florence is regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and the resurgence of art. It was these works of the time that inspired many other Americans of Italian descent to create their own artwork such as Ralph Fasanella. Many musicians are regarding as being Italian. One musician, Frank Sinatra, has been known for his music career and is widely regarded as a popular musician. However, according to sources Sinatra has been viewed as a mafia member by many people who were prejudice towards the Italian race. This ethnic prejudice can largely be associated with the novel and film The Godfather. The 1969 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Furthermore, the verboten and passion is heightened when the ballrooms and gowns of old New York are stirring in the background. In Edith Wharton's novel, Age of Innocence, Newland Archer finds himself between two women, one being his wife and the other the exciting new girl in town. Newland, as well as the other characters, find themselves with two choices at hand, order and innocence or their true wants and needs. After Ellen has left New York several times and obstacles of the two being together have been naturally formed by Newland's work and Ellen's travels or purposefully formed by the Archers and Wellands, Mae's family. As Newland agrees to pick up Ellen at the Pennsylvania terminus, he sets out in Mae's dark blue brougham, one that still has their wedding varnish on it. In this symbol of Newland and Mae's marriage, Newland dreams of seeing Ellen walk down the ramp to his embrace. With desire and ignorance towards society's constraints, Newland feels a rush to ask Ellen to run away with him. Ellen realizes how blind Newland is being to the realities of their forbidden love although he tells her, "I want– I want somehow to get away with you into a world where words like that–––categories like that–––won't exist". The word Newland is referring to is "mistress" when Ellen asks if she would be a mistress or a wife to Newland in the future. At this moment in the novel, Newland seems more pathetic than reasonable as Ellen replies condescendingly, "Oh my dear–––where is that country? Have you ever been there?"(306) . While Ellen seems to know that they will both make the choice of keeping their family name happy, Newland seems set on choosing his passion for Ellen. Although the two do not pursue their love as the novel closes, due to fear of family name and society's response, Newland's question to Ellen almost has him completely lovestruck. When the novel began, Ellen was the one who wore the dresses that showed too much skin and invited Newland to sit with her somewhat promiscuously. However, Ellen's familiarity with her own stand out self leads Newland to have a completely skewed perspective with Ellen remains in check with reality. Ellen has become a romantic illusion to ... This, and other British ballad operas, ballets and pantomimes, formed the majority of musicals offered on American stages in the beginning of the 1800's. The roots of the music we know today can be dated back to the French and Viennese operettas. Operettes are light musical comedies that would often provide broad satire and wit to the stage, combined with bright melodies and high energy. These would be the blueprint for all musical theatre to come. The Black Crook was the first piece to fit modern musicals. The play premiered in 1866 in New York City and was a staggering success. Once the modern musical was developed there was more opportunity for theoretical advances. Broadway saw its fair share of musicals during the 1890's and the number continued to grow during the 20th century. The theatre experienced a boom in business with the start of World War I; given the devastation of the battlefield audiences flocked to the stages in order to get some escapism. As the 20th century continued musical theatre began to grow in popularity and quality. The public ruled heavily in favor of musicals, so the 1980s brought a succession of long–running "Brit hits" to Broadway, such as Cats, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and Miss Saigon. ... Confucius stresses that we must encourage our superiors to act ethically and to lose their position if the ruler persists in unethical behavior. Most of our political laws are governed by this virtue. In the four discussions of Aristotle's physics it is implied that political views should be governed by material cause, formal cause, efficient and final causes. Aristotle seemed to be more focused on science and politics more so than Confucius being more of a humanitarian. The practice and beliefs Confucius and Aristotle suggested have shaped our country and the manner in which we behave towards one another. • 38. Critical Analysis Of Wallace Stevens's 'The Inhabitants' The daily ritual of leaving work in the city to arrive home in the suburbs has been masterfully depicted in the poem, The Inhabitants. By taking the New Critical analysis approach in using scientific theory, we can unpack its meaning through a defined system self–contained within the text. In our analysis of The Inhabitants we take a structuralism approach. Structuralism as defined by Mary Klages, in her book Literary Theory: A Guide for the Perplexed, is a way of thinking that works to find the fundamental basis units or elements of which anything is made." (p 31). The number 5 is a very powerful prime number. Taking a closer look at the poem, we see the power of the 5 paradigm and how it plays a crucial role in unlocking the poem's very meaning. Similarly, in our class exercise we utilized the work of Wallace Stevens, "A Postcard From the Volcano", and reduced the story to its bare bones. Getting to the basics of Guest's piece, we can simply start with its structural rhythm of five stanzas. Each stanza is a self–contained unit that describes the transition from the city to the suburbs. In the first stanza the descriptive is of the onset of departing office workers pilgrimage, "Like people in an opera on the street," gracefully orchestrate an orderly descent from their office building to the bus stop.
