Assignment 1 Focus On The Learner
Selma Pasanbegovic
Assignment 1 – Focus on the Learner
Task a: Learner's Background
For the purpose of this assignment I chose Feruza, an Eritrean high school graduate. She was born
and raised in Eritrea and came to live in Jeddah only five years ago. She studied English in an
elementary school in Eritrea and continued studying it in an Eritrean International High School. She
is not happy at all with what she has learnt during those years. She explained that during her
elementary school years her teachers heavily focused on writing while neglecting speaking. When
she continued her learning process here in Jeddah, her high school teachers focused only on
speaking but not at the level she was expecting.
After completing high school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first activity I provided for her is a list of sentences where no capitalization was used. She
would need to write the sentences using proper capitalization rules that I also provided for her.
When she finishes the activity she can compare it to the answer key (also provided) and see if her
answers were correct. By approaching this problem in such a fashion she will hopefully be able to
see the difference and understand the rules of capitalization.
Tenses: Meaning
Aside from writing, Feruza's is struggling with the correct verb form usage. When referring to
events in her writing that occurred in the past she only uses the simple past tense and oftentimes she
even uses the Present Simple Tense when referring to a completed action in the past:
"she get merried before I come to Jeddah one year ago."
Feruza uses the right verbs but uses the wrong form of the verbs, as in the example provided above.
Here is one more example:
"I finish my high school last year......"
Although she had a chance of getting familiar with the timeline during the course at the British
Council, I would suggest that she gets reacquainted with it, so she can better understand the different
tenses and when to use them. That is the easiest way for her to get over this obstacle.
I will provide a timeline showing and explaining the basic tenses that she is most likely to use in her
everyday life. Also, I will provide a set of activities for different forms of the verbs for her to

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman
Fast Car, originally composed and performed by Tracy Chapman in 1988, is a contemporary song
that has captured the hearts of audiences of all ages around the world for decades. In this piece, the
persona takes the listener on not only a physical, but also on an emotional and imaginative journey,
as she tells us her story of desperate hope to escape the place she lives in order to make a better life
for herself elsewhere, and the obstacles she must overcome to do so. Through this text, Chapman
effectively communicates that searching for something better is often the reason we embark on a
journey, as well as exploring the fact that taking a physical journey does not always mean that we
escape the problems that exist in our life. She also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, Chapman illustrates that even though a journey may not have given you what you thought it
would, it will often bring newfound maturity, sense of reality and greater understanding of life.
Throughout the whole song, the persona is shown as being very determined, and

English As A Second Language ( Esl ) Summer Enrichment...
Describe
Currently I am teaching one of the district's English as a Second Language (ESL) Summer
Enrichment classes which lasts 12 days. The class is comprised of twenty–one intermediate students
who have been in the country two years or less. The class schedule consists of four one and one–half
hour sessions that focus on grammar, writing and reading where one component of the reading is
taught using social studies content. According to Diaz–Rico and Weed (2010), the goal of sheltered
instruction is to provide support for the language learner while they are in the learning grade–
appropriate content rather than allowing them to struggle in mainstream classes. The Enrichment
Program is designed as a scaffold that supports students by preparing them for the more in depth
content that they will encounter in the upcoming school year. It utilizes modified grade–appropriate
content along with language objectives that are designed to increase the students' content schema in
a comfortable learning environment.
Explain
The sheltered instruction approach has proven to be effective in this program because it addresses all
the needs outlined by Diaz–Rico and Weed (2010). First, students are learning grade appropriate
content. Through the use of modified texts where the language has been simplified for easier
understanding, students learn about both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Both of these
topics are required for student mastery of the social studies Texas

Examples Of Death In Death Of A Salesman
After the boys abandon their father in a restaurant for dates with women they have picked up, she
fiercely attacks both of them: "You're a pair of animals! Not one, not another living soul would have
had the cruelty to walk out on that man in a restaurant!" (98). Linda knows her Willy is a common
man and as good as many other people. She thinks he deserves at least the respect of his own sons:
"Attention, attention must finally paid to such a person !" (40). Perhaps Linda expresses the idea that
Miller suggests us to think about. On the contrary, when Willy cannot stand the bitterness of the
reality, he goes back to the past and Charley appears in his mind: Schneider "the technique of
psychic projection, of hallucination, of the guilty expression of forbidden wishes dramatized." (252)
On one hand, Charley stands in contradiction to everything Willy believes in. He knows what Willy
was in the past. He even tries to make Willy a man of success and thereby restore Willy's dignity.
His humanity and lack of illusion enable him to penetrate Willy's mind and points out Willy's weak
points: "Why must everybody like you? Who liked J. P. Morgan? Was he impressive? In a Turkish
bath he'd look like a butcher. But with his pockets on he was well liked" (75). He is stern about
Willy's low standard of fair play, and impatient with his childlike dreams, urging Willy all ... Show

Why, why can't I give him something and not have him hate me? (101)
In the light of Miller's distinctions between these two dramatic styles, the study of Death of a
Salesman becomes more complex. Although he claims for the play a basic realism, it breaks the
rules which he himself has set down for the realistic approach. As will be seen, Salesman does make
a symbol of its hero; and Miller himself admits that its treatment of time "explodes the watch and
the calendar." This dualism of technique results from his use of expressionistic elements to
complement the psychological realism of the

Adolescent Females And Males And Females
Introduction and Summary
i. Introduce:
This study aims to research the emergence of gender differences in the language of children
(Ladegaard, 2002). It is noted within the article that there has been a number of studies that put forth
opposing views regarding the differences in language between the genders. Some researchers will
argue that there is no gender difference in the sociolinguistic abilities of adult males and females and
that there is often an overlap in the use of language between the two groups. However, Ladegaard
states that there is a great deal of evidence in many sociolinguistic studies that there is, in fact,
differences in the language used by adult males and females. Ladegaard makes reference to a
number of studies that have concluded that adult male speakers will prefer to use vernacular forms
of language, whereas adult female speakers will prefer to use standard speech forms. Since there is
substantial findings with the difference of language between adult females and adult males, it is
argued within this article that there must be an age in which the language differences begin to form
(2002).
Ladegaard states that many previous studies have suggested that "children's acquisition of
sociolinguistic competence, such as their awareness of standard and vernacular norms, happens
much earlier than the age 17 or 18" (2002). Because of the results of these previous studies,
Ladegaard has conducted his study in order to try and discover at what age this

Ukrainian science is making successful efforts to be integrated into the international scientific
community. Each year dozens of monographs by Ukrainian scholars are published abroad. Many
Ukrainian scientific journals are translated into foreign languages. Under the aegis of UNESCO, an
international research and educational centre for information technologies and systems as well as
international chairs of cryobiology and physiology have been set up in Ukraine. Established in 1993,
the International Association of Academies of Sciences is playing an important role to stimulate
integration processes among Academies of Sciences of CIS countries. The National Academy of
Sciences of Ukraine headed by Academician Borys Paton, its world–renowned President, remains
the stronghold of these research institutions.
Ukrainian Space Industry
Young independent Ukraine confidently became one of the world space states owing to its space
research and production potential.
In February 1992, National Space Agency of Ukraine (NSAU) was established to implement state
space activities policy. Its control sphere includes about 30 production enterprises, research

Examples Of Past Imperfect Continuous Tense
The past imperfect continuous tense shows changes in the form of the auxiliary verb according to
the person and the number.
Example: I was writing this book when the revolution occurred in Ghana.
You were writing or sleeping at the time.
She or he was sleeping.
They were planning to seize power.
The past perfect momentary tense is indicated by using the past form of have to get the past perfect.
It does not change in any circumstance.
Example: I had written. I had done that already.
You had gone.
He or she had written
They had left.
The past perfect continuous tense is shown by introducing had been in all cases. This also does not
change in any circumstance.
Example: I had been writing. You had been reading. He or she had been sleeping. They had been
meeting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You will have been writing.
He or she will have been writing. They will have been writing.
In most cases however the future perfect tenses are used in the subjunctive mood in which case the
present tense of "shall" or "will" is replaced by the past form i.e. Should or would to express
hypothesis or possibility in most cases in the form of regrets indicating in some cases an opportunity
which had past and not utilized. Now care must be taken to use each of the tenses correctly because
a mix up will necessarily result in vagueness, ambiguity and mis–information.

Summary Of The Year Of Magical Thinking By Joan Didion
The Year of Magical Thinking is mainly about the struggles and grief–induced mental illness that
Joan Didion experiences as a result of the death of John, her husband. Throughout the book, the
reader accompanies Didion in her year of magical thinking as she attempts to convince herself that
John is dead. However, Didion frequently finds herself associating signs in past memories of
moments with John in an effort to prove that he knew that he would die soon; she even wills herself
to believe that John will come back by holding on to John's possessions. While Didion works to
suppress and ignore her magical thinking, she must also continue through each day by herself, and
with the failing health of Quintana, her daughter, continuing on with her life becomes strenuous.
Eventually, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being a topic endured by so many, other self–help and advice books employ the emotions that have
been tied to grief, but this book is unique and immensely applicable. Writing from a reflective
interpretation, Didion takes an in–depth look at her own experience and does so in a logical manner
by both sharing important thoughts instead of unhelpful emotion and providing numerous examples
of what to expect. Why is this approach so important? After reading this book, such an approach
prevents unnecessary drama since these readers know how they would reflect on that moment
afterwards and, because they know that, can overcome the tiresome emotions. In addition to the
unique take, Didion tells the whole period like a story, making a learning process with nonfiction an
enjoyable pastime as found in fiction. A wonderful book altogether, The Year of Magical Thinking
by Joan Didion is pleasing for the mind and brimming with applicable experience; it would be a
mistake to forgo such an abundant source of knowledge and

English Verb Forms Of English Grammar
According to ELT and Greebaum's The Oxford English Grammar (1996) English verb forms can be
systematized under two huge categories, each of them includes sub–categories of forms.
1.Inflected forms:
1.1. Base Form of verbs: In English grammar a regular English verb has only on principal part, from
which all following verb forms can be derived. This form is available in dictionary and is called
base form. For example, base form is paint, the inflected forms are: paint, paints, painted, painting.
Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to
referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996,
Pp.118–121)
1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are
unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past
participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S.,
1996, Pp.126–128)
1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person
singular present tense forms.
1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being),
1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in
limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129).
Another important part of verb form analysis is grammatical base form or plain form

Assignment : Focus On The Learner
Written Assignment – Focus on the Learner Profile of the learner Introduction Nazir has kindly
volunteered for this piece of work. He is a native of Syria who was born in the capital Damascus.
His mother tongue is Arabic and he is studying English at South Thames College on the Upper
Intermediate level. He currently performs in the top half of the class according to his own
assessment with which I tend to concur. Nazir first learnt English for a few hours a week during
high school. As an adult he took a six month course in the USA with an emphasis on aviation
English in preparation for his pilot training course. Having completed it successfully, he worked a
number of years for Syrian Airlines. The learner I am focusing on is highly motivated by his desire
to integrate better into British society and by wanting to increase his job prospects. His preferred
learning styles are reading and writing. Consequently, during the lessons he enjoys working on his
own and in pairs. Nazir regularly talks Arabic with his wife and teenage children at home. He would
benefit from using the English language regularly in his interactions with them. In addition, he
needs to engage more with native English–speaking people. Since his hobbies are swimming and
playing chess, this could be achieved through a membership in a swimming or chess club. The
socialising aspect in these gatherings would provide him with opportunities to develop fluency in
English. Strength and weaknesses Having

Perfection In Donna Milner's After River
All that glitters is not gold. As a child, one often believes that one's life is perfect, but as one is
exposed to the ugliness of the world, pain shatters the illusion, engendering the arrival of maturity
and adulthood. Donna Milner's After River examines issues revolving around the childish notion of
perfection. In the novel, Natalie's enthrallment in perfection causes her to rebuff the actuality that
her perfect family is naught but a false pretense. Her inability to shed this childish belief hinders her
mental growth.
In order to understand Natalie's lack of growth, one must contemplate perfection from a
psychological viewpoint. Immersion in perfection cultivates an unhealthy mentality; specifically,
Natalie's belief that her family can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She believes that with silence and suppression, a sliver of perfection will return. Thus, she avoids
problems, hoping that they will fade if she refuses to acknowledge them: "I've been running ever
since – running from guilt and shame, from memories and secrets, from relationships. And from
myself" (297). Yet, Natalie's attempts to bury her past only serve to burden her. "It's [Natalie] who
needs to find a way to forgive that sixteen–year–old girl" (323). Like the cage that traps the bird,
Natalie's desire to maintain perfection shackles her to the past, unable to move past the actions of a
sixteen–year–old child.
Furthermore, Natalie's inability to let go of perfection causes her to attempt to preserve the memory
of past perfection by dividing her life into perfect and imperfect. Although this succeeds in
preserving perfection, it instills the idea of a before and after without the third option of an 'after–
after': "Every relationship has a line. The moment you step over it, love begins to diminish...I found
my family's line when I was seventeen" (129–130). This causes Natalie to believe that perfection
and her family cannot exist without the other; as perfection shatters, so must her

There is a serious demand for this as many cities within the UK have an increasing number of non–
native English speakers who find it difficult to participate and become active members of society
due to this language barrier. You also have a high number of developing cities abroad (especially in
the Gulf states) where there is a demand for English teachers to come and educate the local
population. Coupled with my command of the Urdu, Arabic, Hindi and Punjabi languages, I believe
pursuing the Cambridge CELTA is definitely the right step to take. Once having read the previous

Separate Peace Essay: Influence of the War on Characters
Influence of the War on Characters
Historical events can play an important role in a person's life. In A Separate Peace, the whole
atmosphere at the Devon School changed as World War II progressed. The boys either eagerly
awaited the draft, enlisted in the area of war they wanted, or did not want to go at all. The students at
the school created new activities for enjoyment since the customary past times could not be played
due to a lack of materials. When a friend "returns" from the war, the boys at Devon got a real sense
of what the war was like. The boys learned that going to war was not all fun and games like they had

Short Story : The Story Of Song Tra Bong
The war has ended, and Norman returns to Iowa, but everything has changed. He talks about how
his father wanted him to receive many awards, and says how his dad would be proud of how many
badges he got. Now, Norman imagined telling his dad the story of the silver star. He uses repetition
on the reason why he didn't obtain the silver star which was because of "the smell" (139). The story
was, soldiers were stationed near the lake of Song Tra Bong. It was raining very hard. The lake was
overflowing and the smell was almost unbearable. Norman had concluded that the lake was used a
bathroom for the villagers. Norman saw Kiowa sinking in the sewage. He tried grabbing his boot,
but failed to save his friend since he began to sink and couldn't handle the smell. As a matter of fact,
Norman would've received the silver star if he would've conjured up enough courage to do so.
Throughout the chapter, Norman Bowker retold stories of his past in a circular pattern, as if the
stories never came to an end. He expresses his need for the pattern to end when the narrator reports
that, "Dark was pressing in tight now, and he wished there were somewhere to go" (145). Norman
feels dramatically alone since his ex girlfriend is happily married, his best friend is dead, and his dad
is constantly busy. Norman was very repetitive with sharing his loneliness in concluding that he had
"nowhere to go" (137). This abandoned feeling is comparable to the constant circular repetition used
in this chapter

Statistics in India Today-Past Perfect, Future Tense!
Statistics in India Today–Past Perfect, Future Tense!
A P Gore

President, Indian Society for Probability and Statistics
Today we are all used to the idea of young Indian techies traveling all across the world providing IT
solutions and services. But hardly anyone knows that a similar trend started 50 years ago. What?
You ask incredulously. But there were no computers then, let alone PCs. Very true. Those techies
were statisticians, helping many nations, some free and others still in colonial bondage, in their
attempts at development. How did this come about? To answer such a question, we have to trace a
little bit of history. Statistics is a young discipline, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only has the educational establishment been unresponsive to changes in the business world,
there is lack of response to changing technology scene as well. We need to develop new statistical
tools to analyze satellite imagery as well as medical images such as MRI. To my knowledge only a
couple of statisticians work on problems of interpreting such images. Use of micro array chips in
genetics and related fields is on the rise. Again very peculiar statistical problems are involved in
interpretation of these measurements. In the absence of good statistics, conclusions drawn (e.g.
genes selected for further work) may go wrong more often. Again no thrust has been developed in
this area. Lack of purpose and focus is apparent in the fact that even in areas of traditional strength,
our grip is loose. A good example is sample surveys. Two founding fathers of statistics in India,
namely P C Mahalanobis and P V Sukhatme, both recognized and emphasized the role of statistical
sample surveys. India became well known for achievements in theory and practice of sample
surveys. The situation has changed a lot since then. Most experts in the field have retired and the
number of new entrants is miniscule. There is hardly any serious research being done in the country
on survey methodology. Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation is running out of names

The Opening Line Of The Middle Of Things
In the opening chapter of Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy uses the technique of in medias res, which
translates from Latin to "in the middle of things", to establish the central themes of his novel. The
opening line of the book serves as somewhat of a thesis statement for the seven–hundred pages that
follow – that is, Tolstoy asserts the unique nature of unhappy families to preface a book about
several strained familial relationships. In the next sentence, Tolstoy establishes the novel's chaotic
tone, describing everything in the Oblonskys' household as being "upset". The rest of the paragraph
features a series of syntactically similar sentences in the past perfect tense that discuss, in a
methodical way, the causes and effects of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, in the third paragraph, the reader is introduced to the first character, Stiva, whom they are
told is a prince. Tolstoy uses luxurious diction to demonstrate Stiva's lifestyle, referencing his
"morocco leather–covered sofa" and his "plump, well–kept body". At the point the reader is
introduced to Stiva, he has had a sudden awakening. The authorial voice then switches from that of
an omniscient third person to the conscious thoughts of Stiva Oblonsky. In this manner, the
paragraph is very similar to the stream–of–consciousness style that would become so important
during early–twentieth century literary movements. In doing this, Tolstoy both allows us the same
incomplete impression of Stiva's dream that Stiva has, and ties the dream with the light, surreal
sentiment it evokes in Stiva. This technique also plays with the themes of memory and perception
that were so integral to Tolstoy's early works. The dream features a party with fantastic imagery of
singing glass tables and "little decanters that [are] also women". This fantasy–party is set in
America, about as far from Petersburg as possible, which points to a pervading tendency for
escapism in the Russian nobility at this time of social upheaval. Indeed, at several points in the
novel, characters flee Russia when met with adversity, as when Kitty gets sick and Anna reconnects
with Vronsky.

The Depth of Diction in Richard Hayden’s Those Winter Sundays
When reading a poem it is important to understand that the chosen diction possesses more depth
beyond what is literally meant. Information hidden beneath metaphorical verses serves to not only
give insight into the writers thinking process, but also to communicate with readers. Richard
Hayden's, Those Winter Sundays, serves as a poetic narrative describing the actions taken by a
father to ensure his family's well– being. Hayden's modern sonnet generates multiple concepts of
love, sacrifice and regret which assist the reader in understanding the limitless capacity of someone's
devotion and the recipients of this affection lack of gratitude. The title of any given work of
literature is always significant to the author's meaning and intent of the work. Hayden meticulously
inserts an emotional symbolism in the title of the poem which already opens the reader's eyes to the
incoming melodramatic nostalgic mood of the poem. Reading the title as a whole, one will assume
that because the words are in past tense form, the work will have a reminiscent feel to it.
Nevertheless, when the words are broken down and analyzed individually, more information about
its meaning can be derived. Firstly, the word "those" from the title serves a dual purpose. On one
level, "those" illustrates distance which will possibly allude to the speakers distance with his father
during childhood. Secondly, being that the word is pluralized, the use of those in the title also
suggests something that is

help investigators achieve in their writing and allow them to complete the writing task as quickly as
possible so they can get the information. In addition to the five basic rules of narrative writing the
investigator can do other things as well to develop the report and improve its professional quality
towards the report. The first rule of narrative writing is called first person. When writing a report or
during the time someone gives you information you should always write in the first person and refer
to yourself as "I" or "me". As the writes of an investigative report you are always correct in using
the personal pronouns "I" and "me" when referring to yourself. (Biggs, Michael, 17) The second rule
of narrative writing is called past tense. The past tense is the tense that is most commonly used to
describe events or actions that have already occurred which means by writing a report using past
tense can develop consistency and can make the report easier to read. ( Biggs, Michael, 17) The
third rule of narrative writing is called active voice. The active voice is the way of writing that
shows action that someone is doing and with a passive voice that is caused by someone who is
having something done to them.( Biggs, Michael, 18) The fourth rule of narrative writing is

Underfunded Schools Forced To Cut Past Tense Essay
"With our current budget, the past tense must unfortunately become a thing of the past." This is an
excerpt from the article title "Underfunded Schools Forced To Cut Past Tense From Language
Programs." The context of this essay to is basically explain the absurd and ludicrous things schools
cut from the school to save money. The 2 thesis statements from this story is that they use humor in
the statements and make it seem like it's normal & the second one is just the whole idea or general
message of this paragraph. First thesis statement stated that they use humor in the description and
make it seem like it's normal. The whole article is completely crazy to be honest, the fact that a
school would even consider cutting this is crazy. Yes, they may need to save money but it"s very
funny as to how they plan on saving money. It doesn't make very much sense which is also part of

This pretty much goes along with the first thesis statement, but it goes even further and more
descriptive than that. The principal could've cut a lot of other things from the budget, but he or she
had to cut the past tense from the language programs. If you really think about how stupid this
article is, that's really why it's so funny because it's so stupid. They say in the article that they had to
cut the past tense so we shall not speak in past tense anymore, how are you even supposed to do
that? They said that when we cut it from the school budget no one will speak about it because it was
in the past, which makes no sense at all by the way. The bottom line of the general message is that
the fact that they cut –ed out of words is so questionable to the point where it's just funny. It may be
kind of a thinker, but there's no real answer towards why they chose to cut it, they just did. They are
just a few reasons as to why there was humor used in the general idea or message of this

Examples Of Error Analysis And Second Language Acquisition
I. Introduction
Learning English as a foreign language can be difficult for students whose mother tongue is
Spanish. Frequently, those pupils struggling are the ones who suffer from mistakes and errors when
writing in English. Mistakes, if not corrected can become errors, which is a normalized and
uncorrected way to pronounce and write a word in the target language (TL)
As Ali Akbar acknowledges in his paper "Error analysis and second language acquisition" (2012)
error analysis (EA) started from scholars realization of errors that English students make when
writing or speaking in the TL. This usually happened because of a self–governed behavior, which
relates to the repetitiveness of mistakes and not correcting them.
Error correction (EC) is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(p.9)
The previously mentioned relates with Swan and Smith (2001), arguing that this specific type of
error is common in English learners due to the confusion between regular, adding the –ed and
irregular verbs changing the word into another.
Furthermore, Bayinah (2013) acknowledges that in this stage, before the second language is familiar
with the learner, the native language is the only linguistic system that is mastered by the learner.
(p.8–9) Thus, it is important to start making changes in the way students use spoken and written
language, in order to stop the fossilization of words and start correcting them appropriately.
In the sentence "...and a short film are exposed" happens that, the past and present tense are

Compare And Contrast Disabled And The Necklace
'Disabled' and 'The Necklace' are two differing texts, dating from different times, and which both
depict loss faced by the main characters. 'The Necklace', written by famous French writer Guy de
Maupassant, tells the story of Mrs Loisel, a middle class woman living around late twentieth century
France. She faces tragedy after losing a necklace she thought was inestimable, as she spends the rest
of her life repaying it and sacrificing her riches, only to find out the necklace was an imitation. This
philosophical story is based on morals and nevertheless warns us not to take granted what we
already have. The other text, 'Disabled', is a poem written by the famous poet Wilfred Owen. It is set
during World War One and is presented through the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wilfred Owen shows us this distance by using the past tense, making the memories stay in the past
for the soldier, and creating a certain link to regret and deception. Furthermore, deception is also
evoked when referring to the female gender, who is interestingly not only referred as girls but also
implied as women and mother who are generally caring and loving but are instead rejecting and
deprive him from his pleasures. Deception comes as the women who have become frauds, compared
to the young beautiful women of his youth, deceive him. Evidence to this is when Wilfred Owen
writes in the second stanza about the women, as things turn from fun to horrid when the women
'touch him like some queer disease'. The fact that the women do not see him as a person but as a
disease that they must cure, a 'queer' disease, meaning strange and bizarre, suggests the disgust they
feel as they touch him, but also the unloving manner in which he senses they treat him, as if he was
a thing, and object of horror. The writer demonstrates to the reader how uncaring females have
become onwards the soldier, showing a complete change in behaviour from them because he has
lost his legs. Reasons for this may be gender roles at that time which expected men to be strong a
protection for women; in the soldier's case, this could be

Symbolic Language In A Dolls House
Perspective is critical if one is to gain an extensive and detailed understanding of any form of
literature, whether it be their own, a characters, or the authors. In A Doll's House symbolic language
and comparison are used to illustrate the protagonist's perspective in correlation to their situation.
This results in Nora's point of view throughout the play being expressed in a more elaborate manner
in regard to the positive and negative aspects of her life. Her absence of individual thought, the
physical objectification she faces, and lack of significance to others all are all areas further
expressed, and will be areas of further discussion. Ultimately through comparison and symbolism in
the language used, Nora's perspective is further expressed, illustrating the epitome of the title, A
Doll's House.
Nora's understanding of how little individuality she possesses is expressed by the symbolic and
comparative language present in the play. The plot clearly displays the role Nora plays in reference
to serving her family, specifically Helmer. While the reader builds their own perspective of the text,
an in depth analysis of the language used by and directed towards Nora provides insight to her own
personal perspective. Nora's initial sentiment of her role is very limited past serving her husband.
This is very clear when she reassures him stating "I will do everything to please you Torvald; I will
sing and dance"(act 1, page 43). The use of "everything" displays the lack of

Ango Sakazee's Anthem For The Hometown
Baudelaire deals with the change of Paris in "the Swan." It depicts his poignant feeling toward the
loss of the past, in which he loved the component of the city. He considers himself, as well as the
swan and his lover who died of tuberculosis, as an "exile" in the poem. To discuss the concept of
exile in the Swan, a Japanese writer Ango Sakaguchi's "Anthem for the Hometown" might be
helpful. The story consists of the narrator's monologue from beginning to the end. He has craved a
lot of stuff, none of which was gained. He sought for something to crave, and find a vague memory
of a girl in his mind. When he visits the hometown, his birthplace has disappeared, naturally he does
not find the girl who should now be a grown up woman and her house is inhibited by a stranger
now. He meets his sister there, who suffers from malignant melanoma. Then he leaves the town to
return with some enthusiasm to his daily life.
Baudelaire describes his nostalgia to the old Paris, where the roads and buildings are destroyed and
reconstructed meticulously. He recalls the past and feels that he is not fit to the city now. As he uses
the analogy of Andromache in the very first line, his sentiment leaps to ancient Greek. The
persistence toward the past is expressed in the line ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

experiences the geographical separation from his dear old Paris. Ango's narrator has the life to live
in now since he once leaves the town. Namely, he lost his past once, before he witnesses the loss
under his eyes. Baudelaire, unfortunately, did not have the chance to put distance to his hometown

The Passing of Time in A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner
The most inevitable aspect of time is that it continues to move on, and it forces people to move with
it. In his story "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner illustrates the passage of time as it affects the
southern hometown of Miss Emily Grierson. The narrater relates the town's recollections of Emily's
life–the unmarried daughter of the late mayor who does not want to pay her property taxes–and
eventually her death. The Gothic and horror elements of the story add to the sensational tale of an
unstable spinster and her morbid secrets. On the exterior, the story seems to be the product of the
townspeople's general curiosity of an estranged and lonely woman; it takes on the character of a
gossip story or a folk tale. However, a closer look at Faulker's treatment of Emily in relation to the
rest of the town indicates that the story has a larger purpose. Emily becomes a fixture in a town that
continues to adapt, and her refusal to change with it leaves her classified as archaic and isolated.
While an initial reading of "A Rose for Emily" would suggest that that the story is about the
eccentrics of Emily Grierson, Faulker's perspective and use of temporal shifts reveal that the story in
fact illustrates the tension between the past and the present, and ultimately displays the danger of
refusing to accept the passage of time. The most significant facet of Faulkner's structure is his use
of the narrator, who portrays Emily's isolation. In the first sentence of the story, the

Essay On Those Winter Sundays
Silence offers valuable moments of introspection and understanding. The poem "Those Winter
Sundays" written by Robert Hayden describes the narrator's childhood and memories of his father.
The poem conveys the message of a father's unconditional love presented through his actions.
Essentially, it displays different aspects and forms of love that can be found beyond the literal and
positive meanings. Through diction, imagery, and syntax the author reflects on the sacrifices and
hardships of his father, to express his remorseful feeling for overlooking his father's love.
Diction is used to reveal the narrator's tone of guilt or regret. It is evident that the father is a restless
man as on "Sundays too" he gets up early to work. Typically, Sunday ... Show more content on

The poem is written as a reflection/recollection of the narrator's past memories and actions
pertaining to his father. It is arranged in the past tense format with past participles. This further
proves of the events occurring in the past and ties in with the relation of a specific time or age
complementing with one's lack of knowledge and understanding. Since the author is reflecting on
his past there is the consideration of his lower comprehensive skills. The poem is also structured in
the form of memories, which is coherent to the meaning of the poem as it efficaciously
communicates the reflective theme. At the end, there is a major shift as the rhetorical questions play
into role. "What did I know, what did I know?" In this the narrator's tone partially sounds as if he is
directing the questions to his younger self in an interrogating manner, questioning his understanding.
This particular statement expresses more of his inner voice, which is of deep sorrow and guilt for
not acknowledging his father's deeds and noticing his love. Likewise, the reader is able to notice this
change and appreciate the narrator's new level of maturity and

Dorian Gray Loss Of Innocence
Time and time again the confrontations between Dorian Gray and his true nature causes Dorian to
change his personality almost instantly. During his first confrontation of his true nature of innocence
with Lord Henry, "Then had come Lord Henry Wotton with his strange panegyric on youth, his
terrible warning of it brevity. That had stirred him at the time, and now. As he stood gazing at the
show of his own loveliness, the full reality of the description flashed across him. Yes there would be
a day when his face would be wrinkled and wizen, his eyes dim and colourless, the grace of his

A moment where Dorian does face his true self is looking at the dead body of Basil, "There was
blood on the painted feet, as though the thing had dripped–– blood even on the hand that hod not

atonement. There was a God who called upon men to tell their sins to earth as well as to heaven.
Nothing that he could do would cleanse him till he had told his own sin" (183). His confrontation of
his deeds is denoted by religious words such as "sin", "god" and "duty". The inward reflection of his
deeds is also shown by possessive words such as the "his" in "his duty" and "own" in "his own sin".
Dorian acknowledges his deeds and true nature as this shows how his evaluating his true self makes
him confront what he has done. As Dorian tries to forget his deeds as denoted by the word "cleanse"
himself, his true nature still influences who he is and weighs down on his decisions. The weight of
these decisions is "to suffer public shame" and "public atonement". The next time Dorian confronts
his past is right after the suicide of Sibyl Vane where he states " 'So I have murdered Sibyl Vane,'
said Dorian Gray, half to himeself––'murdered her as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a

Analysis Of The Poem ' Sandpiper ' And Sophy On The Son 's...
How could, both the narrator in 'Sandpiper' and Sophy in 'The Son's Veto', evoke feelings of both
sympathy and frustration? –DRAFT–4
Manzar
"The chaired lady"...
This is one of the first impressions of Sophy that Hardy presents to readers. The word 'chaired'
suggests a sense of weakness, inability and insignificance. These ideas are crucially embedded
through Sophy in "The son's veto" and the narrator in "Sandpiper". The authors do this to emphasise
the tragic lives of the characters and how they are victims of the societies that mould their
perception.
To begin with, readers feel sympathy towards Sophy in 'The Son's Veto' as she is constantly mocked
by Randolph, who views her with great contempt, 'I am ashamed of you! It will ruin me! A
miserable boor! A churl! A clown!" Randolf hasn't even met Sam yet and already becomes
judgmental and compares him to a boor and a churl simply because of his lower social status. This
authenticates that Randolph has no concerns for his mother's feelings and is just being exceedingly
egoistic and all he cares about is his status. Hardy might be trying to depict that narcissism is a trait
that comes along with high status. This is quite ironic because his father had no problem with
marrying a woman with lower status. However, the frustration kicks in when Sophy says, "Say no
more–perhaps I am wrong! I will struggle against it", as she denies the one thing she loves the most,
just for her son who almost resents her. This frustrates the

writing conventions that consists of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraphs. Mechanics
does not exist in oral language; therefore, mechanics must be explicitly taught. The Analytic Scoring

A Sphere Poem
In his 2006 collection, 'District and Circle', Seamus Heaney responds to the ever–changing and
developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory,
and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of 'District and Circle', 'A
Shiver', Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem.
Heaney's 'A Shiver' utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal
identity. The Petrarchan sonnet describes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated
with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: "the way you had to
stand to swing the sledge". By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past
within his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of
the tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney's fascination of the past, ultimately leads to
a metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands.
The tool that is used within 'A Shiver' to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer – most
commonly used by labourers as a way to demolish material items – and it is implied that Heaney
himself has operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be
contributed to the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney's
personal narrative voice within

Poetic Imagery: Mi Abuelo by Alberto Rios
Out of the three poems, the first two hardly had but one or two symbols throughout. They were so
short, that they hardly had enough time to get but a small message across to the reader, or atleast that

tingle with excitement for writing this paper. Besides the fact that it had the most imagery, it also
was the most interesting and best imagery in my opinion.
The poem starts out with Rios indirectly pointing out that his abuelo, or grandfather, is already

students and praising the students with positive reinforcement. I feel as the students remained
engaged and they were always willing to participate, which allowed them to meet all of the
objectives in my lesson. I was impressed with how well much the students remembered and
understood from my lessons. I presented the instruction and goals for the lesson prior to beginning
the activity. During the lesson, I frequently asked the students questions in order for the students to
remain thinking as well as focused. For the most part, my focus student met the lesson objectives
during each lesson by accurately answering my assessment questions or showing me that he
understands the material that was covered through examples. Within my writing lesson, my focus
student achieved beyond the objective. My student was unsure what a slice of life story consisted of
before beginning the lesson, but by the time our activities were completed, he know exactly what a
slice of life story was (22:45). Additionally, within my guided reading lesson, my focus student did

Assignment 1 Focus On The Learner

  • 1. Assignment 1 Focus On The Learner Selma Pasanbegovic Assignment 1 – Focus on the Learner Task a: Learner's Background For the purpose of this assignment I chose Feruza, an Eritrean high school graduate. She was born and raised in Eritrea and came to live in Jeddah only five years ago. She studied English in an elementary school in Eritrea and continued studying it in an Eritrean International High School. She is not happy at all with what she has learnt during those years. She explained that during her elementary school years her teachers heavily focused on writing while neglecting speaking. When she continued her learning process here in Jeddah, her high school teachers focused only on speaking but not at the level she was expecting. After completing high school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first activity I provided for her is a list of sentences where no capitalization was used. She would need to write the sentences using proper capitalization rules that I also provided for her. When she finishes the activity she can compare it to the answer key (also provided) and see if her answers were correct. By approaching this problem in such a fashion she will hopefully be able to see the difference and understand the rules of capitalization. Tenses: Meaning Aside from writing, Feruza's is struggling with the correct verb form usage. When referring to events in her writing that occurred in the past she only uses the simple past tense and oftentimes she even uses the Present Simple Tense when referring to a completed action in the past: "she get merried before I come to Jeddah one year ago." Feruza uses the right verbs but uses the wrong form of the verbs, as in the example provided above. Here is one more example: "I finish my high school last year......" Although she had a chance of getting familiar with the timeline during the course at the British Council, I would suggest that she gets reacquainted with it, so she can better understand the different tenses and when to use them. That is the easiest way for her to get over this obstacle. I will provide a timeline showing and explaining the basic tenses that she is most likely to use in her everyday life. Also, I will provide a set of activities for different forms of the verbs for her to

  • 3. Fast Car by Tracy Chapman Fast Car, originally composed and performed by Tracy Chapman in 1988, is a contemporary song that has captured the hearts of audiences of all ages around the world for decades. In this piece, the persona takes the listener on not only a physical, but also on an emotional and imaginative journey, as she tells us her story of desperate hope to escape the place she lives in order to make a better life for herself elsewhere, and the obstacles she must overcome to do so. Through this text, Chapman effectively communicates that searching for something better is often the reason we embark on a journey, as well as exploring the fact that taking a physical journey does not always mean that we escape the problems that exist in our life. She also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. English As A Second Language ( Esl ) Summer Enrichment... Describe Currently I am teaching one of the district's English as a Second Language (ESL) Summer Enrichment classes which lasts 12 days. The class is comprised of twenty–one intermediate students who have been in the country two years or less. The class schedule consists of four one and one–half hour sessions that focus on grammar, writing and reading where one component of the reading is taught using social studies content. According to Diaz–Rico and Weed (2010), the goal of sheltered instruction is to provide support for the language learner while they are in the learning grade– appropriate content rather than allowing them to struggle in mainstream classes. The Enrichment Program is designed as a scaffold that supports students by preparing them for the more in depth content that they will encounter in the upcoming school year. It utilizes modified grade–appropriate content along with language objectives that are designed to increase the students' content schema in a comfortable learning environment. Explain The sheltered instruction approach has proven to be effective in this program because it addresses all the needs outlined by Diaz–Rico and Weed (2010). First, students are learning grade appropriate content. Through the use of modified texts where the language has been simplified for easier understanding, students learn about both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Both of these topics are required for student mastery of the social studies Texas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Examples Of Death In Death Of A Salesman After the boys abandon their father in a restaurant for dates with women they have picked up, she fiercely attacks both of them: "You're a pair of animals! Not one, not another living soul would have had the cruelty to walk out on that man in a restaurant!" (98). Linda knows her Willy is a common man and as good as many other people. She thinks he deserves at least the respect of his own sons: "Attention, attention must finally paid to such a person !" (40). Perhaps Linda expresses the idea that Miller suggests us to think about. On the contrary, when Willy cannot stand the bitterness of the reality, he goes back to the past and Charley appears in his mind: Schneider "the technique of psychic projection, of hallucination, of the guilty expression of forbidden wishes dramatized." (252) On one hand, Charley stands in contradiction to everything Willy believes in. He knows what Willy was in the past. He even tries to make Willy a man of success and thereby restore Willy's dignity. His humanity and lack of illusion enable him to penetrate Willy's mind and points out Willy's weak points: "Why must everybody like you? Who liked J. P. Morgan? Was he impressive? In a Turkish bath he'd look like a butcher. But with his pockets on he was well liked" (75). He is stern about Willy's low standard of fair play, and impatient with his childlike dreams, urging Willy all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why, why can't I give him something and not have him hate me? (101) In the light of Miller's distinctions between these two dramatic styles, the study of Death of a Salesman becomes more complex. Although he claims for the play a basic realism, it breaks the rules which he himself has set down for the realistic approach. As will be seen, Salesman does make a symbol of its hero; and Miller himself admits that its treatment of time "explodes the watch and the calendar." This dualism of technique results from his use of expressionistic elements to complement the psychological realism of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Adolescent Females And Males And Females Introduction and Summary i. Introduce: This study aims to research the emergence of gender differences in the language of children (Ladegaard, 2002). It is noted within the article that there has been a number of studies that put forth opposing views regarding the differences in language between the genders. Some researchers will argue that there is no gender difference in the sociolinguistic abilities of adult males and females and that there is often an overlap in the use of language between the two groups. However, Ladegaard states that there is a great deal of evidence in many sociolinguistic studies that there is, in fact, differences in the language used by adult males and females. Ladegaard makes reference to a number of studies that have concluded that adult male speakers will prefer to use vernacular forms of language, whereas adult female speakers will prefer to use standard speech forms. Since there is substantial findings with the difference of language between adult females and adult males, it is argued within this article that there must be an age in which the language differences begin to form (2002). Ladegaard states that many previous studies have suggested that "children's acquisition of sociolinguistic competence, such as their awareness of standard and vernacular norms, happens much earlier than the age 17 or 18" (2002). Because of the results of these previous studies, Ladegaard has conducted his study in order to try and discover at what age this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Summary Of The Year Of Magical Thinking By Joan Didion The Year of Magical Thinking is mainly about the struggles and grief–induced mental illness that Joan Didion experiences as a result of the death of John, her husband. Throughout the book, the reader accompanies Didion in her year of magical thinking as she attempts to convince herself that John is dead. However, Didion frequently finds herself associating signs in past memories of moments with John in an effort to prove that he knew that he would die soon; she even wills herself to believe that John will come back by holding on to John's possessions. While Didion works to suppress and ignore her magical thinking, she must also continue through each day by herself, and with the failing health of Quintana, her daughter, continuing on with her life becomes strenuous. Writing from a reflective interpretation, Didion takes an in–depth look at her own experience and does so in a logical manner by both sharing important thoughts instead of unhelpful emotion and providing numerous examples of what to expect. Why is this approach so important? After reading this book, such an approach prevents unnecessary drama since these readers know how they would reflect on that moment afterwards and, because they know that, can overcome the tiresome emotions. In addition to the unique take, Didion tells the whole period like a story, making a learning process with nonfiction an enjoyable pastime as found in fiction. • 11. English Verb Forms Of English Grammar According to ELT and Greebaum's The Oxford English Grammar (1996) English verb forms can be systematized under two huge categories, each of them includes sub–categories of forms. 1.Inflected forms: 1.1. Base Form of verbs: In English grammar a regular English verb has only on principal part, from which all following verb forms can be derived. This form is available in dictionary and is called base form. For example, base form is paint, the inflected forms are: paint, paints, painted, painting. Hence we can notice, that the base may be called the bare infinitive and the another common way to referring to verbs is combination with –to + infinitive, for example, to paint (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.118–121) 1.2. Irregular verbs have three principal parts (because the simple past and past participle are unpredictable). For instance, the verb write with the base form write, past form – wrote, and past participle – written, the remaining forms (writes and writing) are derived regularly (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.126–128) 1.3. Also there are such verbs as do, say and have that additionally have irregular third person singular present tense forms. 1.4. That is, the copular verb be is irregular (forms: be, am, is, are, was, were, been and being), 1.5. On the opposition modal verbs (can and must) are defective verbs and are being used only in limited number of forms (Greenbaum, S., 1996, Pp.125–129). Another important part of verb form analysis is grammatical base form or plain form ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Assignment : Focus On The Learner Written Assignment – Focus on the Learner Profile of the learner Introduction Nazir has kindly volunteered for this piece of work. He is a native of Syria who was born in the capital Damascus. His mother tongue is Arabic and he is studying English at South Thames College on the Upper Intermediate level. He currently performs in the top half of the class according to his own assessment with which I tend to concur. Nazir first learnt English for a few hours a week during high school. As an adult he took a six month course in the USA with an emphasis on aviation English in preparation for his pilot training course. Having completed it successfully, he worked a number of years for Syrian Airlines. The learner I am focusing on is highly motivated by his desire to integrate better into British society and by wanting to increase his job prospects. His preferred learning styles are reading and writing. Consequently, during the lessons he enjoys working on his own and in pairs. Nazir regularly talks Arabic with his wife and teenage children at home. He would benefit from using the English language regularly in his interactions with them. In addition, he needs to engage more with native English–speaking people. Since his hobbies are swimming and playing chess, this could be achieved through a membership in a swimming or chess club. The socialising aspect in these gatherings would provide him with opportunities to develop fluency in English. Strength and weaknesses Having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Perfection In Donna Milner's After River All that glitters is not gold. As a child, one often believes that one's life is perfect, but as one is exposed to the ugliness of the world, pain shatters the illusion, engendering the arrival of maturity and adulthood. Donna Milner's After River examines issues revolving around the childish notion of perfection. In the novel, Natalie's enthrallment in perfection causes her to rebuff the actuality that her perfect family is naught but a false pretense. Her inability to shed this childish belief hinders her mental growth. In order to understand Natalie's lack of growth, one must contemplate perfection from a psychological viewpoint. Immersion in perfection cultivates an unhealthy mentality; specifically, Natalie's belief that her family can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She believes that with silence and suppression, a sliver of perfection will return. Thus, she avoids problems, hoping that they will fade if she refuses to acknowledge them: "I've been running ever since – running from guilt and shame, from memories and secrets, from relationships. And from myself" (297). Yet, Natalie's attempts to bury her past only serve to burden her. "It's [Natalie] who needs to find a way to forgive that sixteen–year–old girl" (323). Like the cage that traps the bird, Natalie's desire to maintain perfection shackles her to the past, unable to move past the actions of a sixteen–year–old child. Furthermore, Natalie's inability to let go of perfection causes her to attempt to preserve the memory of past perfection by dividing her life into perfect and imperfect. Although this succeeds in preserving perfection, it instills the idea of a before and after without the third option of an 'after– after': "Every relationship has a line. The moment you step over it, love begins to diminish...I found my family's line when I was seventeen" (129–130). This causes Natalie to believe that perfection and her family cannot exist without the other; as perfection shatters, so must her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Coupled with my command of the Urdu, Arabic, Hindi and Punjabi languages, I believe pursuing the Cambridge CELTA is definitely the right step to take. In A Separate Peace, the whole atmosphere at the Devon School changed as World War II progressed. The boys either eagerly awaited the draft, enlisted in the area of war they wanted, or did not want to go at all. The students at the school created new activities for enjoyment since the customary past times could not be played due to a lack of materials. • 17. Short Story : The Story Of Song Tra Bong The war has ended, and Norman returns to Iowa, but everything has changed. He talks about how his father wanted him to receive many awards, and says how his dad would be proud of how many badges he got. Now, Norman imagined telling his dad the story of the silver star. He uses repetition on the reason why he didn't obtain the silver star which was because of "the smell" (139). The story was, soldiers were stationed near the lake of Song Tra Bong. It was raining very hard. The lake was overflowing and the smell was almost unbearable. Norman had concluded that the lake was used a bathroom for the villagers. Norman saw Kiowa sinking in the sewage. He tried grabbing his boot, but failed to save his friend since he began to sink and couldn't handle the smell. As a matter of fact, Norman would've received the silver star if he would've conjured up enough courage to do so. Throughout the chapter, Norman Bowker retold stories of his past in a circular pattern, as if the stories never came to an end. He expresses his need for the pattern to end when the narrator reports that, "Dark was pressing in tight now, and he wished there were somewhere to go" (145). Norman feels dramatically alone since his ex girlfriend is happily married, his best friend is dead, and his dad is constantly busy. Norman was very repetitive with sharing his loneliness in concluding that he had "nowhere to go" (137). This abandoned feeling is comparable to the constant circular repetition used in this chapter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A P Gore Professor, Department of Statistics, University of Pune President, Indian Society for Probability and Statistics Today we are all used to the idea of young Indian techies traveling all across the world providing IT solutions and services. But hardly anyone knows that a similar trend started 50 years ago. What? You ask incredulously. But there were no computers then, let alone PCs. Very true. Those techies were statisticians, helping many nations, some free and others still in colonial bondage, in their attempts at development. How did this come about? Not only has the educational establishment been unresponsive to changes in the business world, there is lack of response to changing technology scene as well. We need to develop new statistical tools to analyze satellite imagery as well as medical images such as MRI. Again very peculiar statistical problems are involved in interpretation of these measurements. In the absence of good statistics, conclusions drawn (e.g. genes selected for further work) may go wrong more often. Again no thrust has been developed in this area. Lack of purpose and focus is apparent in the fact that even in areas of traditional strength, our grip is loose. A good example is sample surveys. Two founding fathers of statistics in India, namely P C Mahalanobis and P V Sukhatme, both recognized and emphasized the role of statistical sample surveys. India became well known for achievements in theory and practice of sample surveys. The situation has changed a lot since then. • 20. The Opening Line Of The Middle Of Things In the opening chapter of Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy uses the technique of in medias res, which translates from Latin to "in the middle of things", to establish the central themes of his novel. The opening line of the book serves as somewhat of a thesis statement for the seven–hundred pages that follow – that is, Tolstoy asserts the unique nature of unhappy families to preface a book about several strained familial relationships. In the next sentence, Tolstoy establishes the novel's chaotic tone, describing everything in the Oblonskys' household as being "upset". The rest of the paragraph features a series of syntactically similar sentences in the past perfect tense that discuss, in a methodical way, the causes and effects of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, in the third paragraph, the reader is introduced to the first character, Stiva, whom they are told is a prince. Tolstoy uses luxurious diction to demonstrate Stiva's lifestyle, referencing his "morocco leather–covered sofa" and his "plump, well–kept body". At the point the reader is introduced to Stiva, he has had a sudden awakening. The authorial voice then switches from that of an omniscient third person to the conscious thoughts of Stiva Oblonsky. In this manner, the paragraph is very similar to the stream–of–consciousness style that would become so important during early–twentieth century literary movements. In doing this, Tolstoy both allows us the same incomplete impression of Stiva's dream that Stiva has, and ties the dream with the light, surreal sentiment it evokes in Stiva. This technique also plays with the themes of memory and perception that were so integral to Tolstoy's early works. The dream features a party with fantastic imagery of singing glass tables and "little decanters that [are] also women". This fantasy–party is set in America, about as far from Petersburg as possible, which points to a pervading tendency for escapism in the Russian nobility at this time of social upheaval. Indeed, at several points in the novel, characters flee Russia when met with adversity, as when Kitty gets sick and Anna reconnects with Vronsky. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. The Depth of Diction in Richard Hayden’s Those Winter Sundays When reading a poem it is important to understand that the chosen diction possesses more depth beyond what is literally meant. Information hidden beneath metaphorical verses serves to not only give insight into the writers thinking process, but also to communicate with readers. Richard Hayden's, Those Winter Sundays, serves as a poetic narrative describing the actions taken by a father to ensure his family's well– being. Hayden's modern sonnet generates multiple concepts of love, sacrifice and regret which assist the reader in understanding the limitless capacity of someone's devotion and the recipients of this affection lack of gratitude. The title of any given work of literature is always significant to the author's meaning and intent of the work. Hayden meticulously inserts an emotional symbolism in the title of the poem which already opens the reader's eyes to the incoming melodramatic nostalgic mood of the poem. Reading the title as a whole, one will assume that because the words are in past tense form, the work will have a reminiscent feel to it. Nevertheless, when the words are broken down and analyzed individually, more information about its meaning can be derived. Firstly, the word "those" from the title serves a dual purpose. On one level, "those" illustrates distance which will possibly allude to the speakers distance with his father during childhood. Secondly, being that the word is pluralized, the use of those in the title also suggests something that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In addition to the five basic rules of narrative writing the investigator can do other things as well to develop the report and improve its professional quality towards the report. When writing a report or during the time someone gives you information you should always write in the first person and refer to yourself as "I" or "me". As the writes of an investigative report you are always correct in using the personal pronouns "I" and "me" when referring to yourself. (Biggs, Michael, 17) The second rule of narrative writing is called past tense. The past tense is the tense that is most commonly used to describe events or actions that have already occurred which means by writing a report using past tense can develop consistency and can make the report easier to read. Frequently, those pupils struggling are the ones who suffer from mistakes and errors when writing in English. Mistakes, if not corrected can become errors, which is a normalized and uncorrected way to pronounce and write a word in the target language (TL) As Ali Akbar acknowledges in his paper "Error analysis and second language acquisition" (2012) error analysis (EA) started from scholars realization of errors that English students make when writing or speaking in the TL. 'The Necklace', written by famous French writer Guy de Maupassant, tells the story of Mrs Loisel, a middle class woman living around late twentieth century France. She faces tragedy after losing a necklace she thought was inestimable, as she spends the rest of her life repaying it and sacrificing her riches, only to find out the necklace was an imitation. Wilfred Owen shows us this distance by using the past tense, making the memories stay in the past for the soldier, and creating a certain link to regret and deception. Furthermore, deception is also evoked when referring to the female gender, who is interestingly not only referred as girls but also implied as women and mother who are generally caring and loving but are instead rejecting and deprive him from his pleasures. Deception comes as the women who have become frauds, compared to the young beautiful women of his youth, deceive him. Evidence to this is when Wilfred Owen writes in the second stanza about the women, as things turn from fun to horrid when the women 'touch him like some queer disease'. The fact that the women do not see him as a person but as a disease that they must cure, a 'queer' disease, meaning strange and bizarre, suggests the disgust they feel as they touch him, but also the unloving manner in which he senses they treat him, as if he was a thing, and object of horror. The writer demonstrates to the reader how uncaring females have become onwards the soldier, showing a complete change in behaviour from them because he has lost his legs. Reasons for this may be gender roles at that time which expected men to be strong a protection for women; in the soldier's case, this could be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symbolic Language In A Dolls House Perspective is critical if one is to gain an extensive and detailed understanding of any form of literature, whether it be their own, a characters, or the authors. In A Doll's House symbolic language and comparison are used to illustrate the protagonist's perspective in correlation to their situation. This results in Nora's point of view throughout the play being expressed in a more elaborate manner in regard to the positive and negative aspects of her life. Her absence of individual thought, the physical objectification she faces, and lack of significance to others all are all areas further expressed, and will be areas of further discussion. Ultimately through comparison and symbolism in the language used, Nora's perspective is further expressed, illustrating the epitome of the title, A Doll's House. Nora's understanding of how little individuality she possesses is expressed by the symbolic and comparative language present in the play. The plot clearly displays the role Nora plays in reference to serving her family, specifically Helmer. While the reader builds their own perspective of the text, an in depth analysis of the language used by and directed towards Nora provides insight to her own personal perspective. Nora's initial sentiment of her role is very limited past serving her husband. This is very clear when she reassures him stating "I will do everything to please you Torvald; I will sing and dance"(act 1, page 43). The use of "everything" displays the lack of ... It depicts his poignant feeling toward the loss of the past, in which he loved the component of the city. He considers himself, as well as the swan and his lover who died of tuberculosis, as an "exile" in the poem. To discuss the concept of exile in the Swan, a Japanese writer Ango Sakaguchi's "Anthem for the Hometown" might be helpful. The story consists of the narrator's monologue from beginning to the end. He has craved a lot of stuff, none of which was gained. He sought for something to crave, and find a vague memory of a girl in his mind. When he visits the hometown, his birthplace has disappeared, naturally he does not find the girl who should now be a grown up woman and her house is inhibited by a stranger now. He meets his sister there, who suffers from malignant melanoma. Then he leaves the town to return with some enthusiasm to his daily life. Baudelaire describes his nostalgia to the old Paris, where the roads and buildings are destroyed and reconstructed meticulously. He recalls the past and feels that he is not fit to the city now. • 35. The Passing of Time in A Rose for Emily, by William Faulkner The most inevitable aspect of time is that it continues to move on, and it forces people to move with it. In his story "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner illustrates the passage of time as it affects the southern hometown of Miss Emily Grierson. The narrater relates the town's recollections of Emily's life–the unmarried daughter of the late mayor who does not want to pay her property taxes–and eventually her death. The Gothic and horror elements of the story add to the sensational tale of an unstable spinster and her morbid secrets. On the exterior, the story seems to be the product of the townspeople's general curiosity of an estranged and lonely woman; it takes on the character of a gossip story or a folk tale. However, a closer look at Faulker's treatment of Emily in relation to the rest of the town indicates that the story has a larger purpose. Emily becomes a fixture in a town that continues to adapt, and her refusal to change with it leaves her classified as archaic and isolated. While an initial reading of "A Rose for Emily" would suggest that that the story is about the eccentrics of Emily Grierson, Faulker's perspective and use of temporal shifts reveal that the story in fact illustrates the tension between the past and the present, and ultimately displays the danger of refusing to accept the passage of time. The poem "Those Winter Sundays" written by Robert Hayden describes the narrator's childhood and memories of his father. The poem conveys the message of a father's unconditional love presented through his actions. Essentially, it displays different aspects and forms of love that can be found beyond the literal and positive meanings. Through diction, imagery, and syntax the author reflects on the sacrifices and hardships of his father, to express his remorseful feeling for overlooking his father's love. Diction is used to reveal the narrator's tone of guilt or regret. It is evident that the father is a restless man as on "Sundays too" he gets up early to work. Typically, Sunday ... It is arranged in the past tense format with past participles. This further proves of the events occurring in the past and ties in with the relation of a specific time or age complementing with one's lack of knowledge and understanding. Since the author is reflecting on his past there is the consideration of his lower comprehensive skills. The poem is also structured in the form of memories, which is coherent to the meaning of the poem as it efficaciously communicates the reflective theme. At the end, there is a major shift as the rhetorical questions play into role. "What did I know, what did I know?" In this the narrator's tone partially sounds as if he is directing the questions to his younger self in an interrogating manner, questioning his understanding. This particular statement expresses more of his inner voice, which is of deep sorrow and guilt for not acknowledging his father's deeds and noticing his love. Likewise, the reader is able to notice this change and appreciate the narrator's new level of maturity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Dorian Gray Loss Of Innocence Time and time again the confrontations between Dorian Gray and his true nature causes Dorian to change his personality almost instantly. During his first confrontation of his true nature of innocence with Lord Henry, "Then had come Lord Henry Wotton with his strange panegyric on youth, his terrible warning of it brevity. That had stirred him at the time, and now. As he stood gazing at the show of his own loveliness, the full reality of the description flashed across him. Yes there would be a day when his face would be wrinkled and wizen, his eyes dim and colourless, the grace of his figure broken and deformed." (Wilde 25) . A moment where Dorian does face his true self is looking at the dead body of Basil, "There was blood on the painted feet, as though the thing had dripped–– blood even on the hand that hod not held the knife. [...] Yet it was his duty to confess, to suffer public shame, and to make public atonement. There was a God who called upon men to tell their sins to earth as well as to heaven. Nothing that he could do would cleanse him till he had told his own sin" (183). His confrontation of his deeds is denoted by religious words such as "sin", "god" and "duty". The inward reflection of his deeds is also shown by possessive words such as the "his" in "his duty" and "own" in "his own sin". Dorian acknowledges his deeds and true nature as this shows how his evaluating his true self makes him confront what he has done. As Dorian tries to forget his deeds as denoted by the word "cleanse" himself, his true nature still influences who he is and weighs down on his decisions. The weight of these decisions is "to suffer public shame" and "public atonement". The next time Dorian confronts his past is right after the suicide of Sibyl Vane where he states " 'So I have murdered Sibyl Vane,' said Dorian Gray, half to himeself––'murdered her as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife' [...] when she played so badly, and my heart almost broke. She had explained it all to me [...] But I was not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Analysis Of The Poem ' Sandpiper ' And Sophy On The Son 's... How could, both the narrator in 'Sandpiper' and Sophy in 'The Son's Veto', evoke feelings of both sympathy and frustration? –DRAFT–4 Manzar "The chaired lady"... This is one of the first impressions of Sophy that Hardy presents to readers. The word 'chaired' suggests a sense of weakness, inability and insignificance. These ideas are crucially embedded through Sophy in "The son's veto" and the narrator in "Sandpiper". The authors do this to emphasise the tragic lives of the characters and how they are victims of the societies that mould their perception. To begin with, readers feel sympathy towards Sophy in 'The Son's Veto' as she is constantly mocked by Randolph, who views her with great contempt, 'I am ashamed of you! It will ruin me! A miserable boor! A churl! A clown!" Randolf hasn't even met Sam yet and already becomes judgmental and compares him to a boor and a churl simply because of his lower social status. This authenticates that Randolph has no concerns for his mother's feelings and is just being exceedingly egoistic and all he cares about is his status. Hardy might be trying to depict that narcissism is a trait that comes along with high status. This is quite ironic because his father had no problem with marrying a woman with lower status. However, the frustration kicks in when Sophy says, "Say no more–perhaps I am wrong! I will struggle against it", as she denies the one thing she loves the most, just for her son who almost resents her. This frustrates the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mechanics is one aspect of writing conventions that consists of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and paragraphs. Mechanics does not exist in oral language; therefore, mechanics must be explicitly taught. The Analytic Scoring Rubric for Writing found on Blackboard was utilized in order to analyze the mechanics of Lily's writing. The rubric is split into four levels and five different sections. For the purpose of this analyzation, the focus is on the mechanics section of the rubric. The four levels are as follows: Level 1: Misspells even simple words: little formatting evident Level 2: Some errors with spelling and punctuation that detract from the meaning Level 3: Mostly effective use of mechanics; errors do not detract from meaning Level 4: Effective use of capitalization, spelling, and formatting (paragraphs noted by ... • 41. A Sphere Poem In his 2006 collection, 'District and Circle', Seamus Heaney responds to the ever–changing and developing world around him. To do so he often relies upon the exploration of the past, memory, and personal identity through the use of language. In the second poem of 'District and Circle', 'A Shiver', Seamus Heaney is dependent upon these concepts to construct a thematically rich poem. Heaney's 'A Shiver' utilises language to explore the themes of the past, memory, and personal identity. The Petrarchan sonnet describes the action of wielding a tool: the energy that is associated with it, as well as an understanding of the destructive power that it wields: "the way you had to stand to swing the sledge". By using a Petrarchan sonnet Heaney introduces the concept of the past within his poetry, due to the historical context of the Renaissance style of writing. The description of the tool, in past tense and therefore illuminating Heaney's fascination of the past, ultimately leads to a metaphor in regards to what occurs when strength, and therefore power, falls into the wrong hands. The tool that is used within 'A Shiver' to demonstrate this power is a sledgehammer – most commonly used by labourers as a way to demolish material items – and it is implied that Heaney himself has operated the sledgehammer and is, almost, frightened by its power. This can then be contributed to the overall metaphor of misused power. This metaphor also demonstrates Heaney's personal narrative voice within ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Poetic Imagery: Mi Abuelo by Alberto Rios Out of the three poems, the first two hardly had but one or two symbols throughout. They were so short, that they hardly had enough time to get but a small message across to the reader, or atleast that 's how I saw it. However, Alberto Rios 's "Mi Abuelo" had many images which made my brain tingle with excitement for writing this paper. Besides the fact that it had the most imagery, it also was the most interesting and best imagery in my opinion. The poem starts out with Rios indirectly pointing out that his abuelo, or grandfather, is already passed away and buried. Even though his grandpa has passed on, he still is connected to the modern world "like an Indian with his ear at the tracks." Now, I 've never heard of an Indian with his ear ... • 43. Positive Reinforcement Considering all of my lessons this semester, my main strength would be modeling the lesson for the students and praising the students with positive reinforcement. I feel as the students remained engaged and they were always willing to participate, which allowed them to meet all of the objectives in my lesson. I was impressed with how well much the students remembered and understood from my lessons. I presented the instruction and goals for the lesson prior to beginning the activity. During the lesson, I frequently asked the students questions in order for the students to remain thinking as well as focused. For the most part, my focus student met the lesson objectives during each lesson by accurately answering my assessment questions or showing me that he understands the material that was covered through examples. Within my writing lesson, my focus student achieved beyond the objective. My student was unsure what a slice of life story consisted of before beginning the lesson, but by the time our activities were completed, he know exactly what a slice of life story was (22:45). Additionally, within my guided reading lesson, my focus student did an exceptional job with spelling and understanding past tense verbs (13:37). However, my student was not able to finish the lesson with the group, therefore I believe that he did not meet the objective due to the lack of practice with past tense verbs. Within my interdisciplinary lesson, Dannie matched all of the pictures of simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
