The hippies were determined to create art of the people, and their chosen art form, rock/folk music,
was by its definition populist. One main theme the music of the hippies was that it was often filled
with anger, anger directed at those who would abuse the Constitution for their benefit, who would

people claimed the hippies were "un–American" and disrespected and ridiculed patriotism, but in

In order to speak to the issue of the proposed federal budget of 2018, I feel I must make certain
disclosures. I am a theatre artist and emerging scholar. I have and stand to continue to benefit from
the NEA. However, as a scholar and artist, I hold the ability to criticize systems which do and do not

the country that receives a direct grant from the NEA also receives private donations in order to
operate, as well as local and state arts agencies which act independently of the federal government

Textual Analysis Of The Movie Bye Birdie
In the beginning of the film the audience is first welcome with Rose Perez (Tina) dancing against
the back drop of Brooklyn brownstone stairs. This is supported by the film theme song Fight the
Power by Public enemy which is heard blaring in the background while the character is dancing.
The tone of the song seems quite aggressive if not rebellious, this was due to the fact that the song

While it is humorous, when you look at the real issue it does lay out a serious angle. To the
intelligent viewer, this can be very effective. They can become engaged in an entertaining fashion
but take the serious message from the satire. To the not so intelligent viewer, this may look like a

The Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie premiered in 1960 and continues to enjoy popularity among
various audiences. Written and composed by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse, the musical
fictionalizes the real–life induction of rock–and–roll idol Elvis Presley through the character of
Conrad Birdie into the United States Army. One important element of the musical's plot is the
excitement of a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town when they learn of the arrival of a rock star
and the prospect of one lucky girl getting a final good–bye kiss. The version of Bye Bye Birdie that
was reviewed for this analysis was an August 2017 stage production by Gulfport Little Theatre. Like
the original production of the musical, the Gulfport Little Theater production stayed truthful to
biographical details of Elvis's life and all actors were highly professional in their representation of
individual characters; however, unlike the original production, the set was reduced to an absolute
minimum which was clearly noticeable to the audience. Both productions of the musical have
identical plots and scene sequences. These may seem self–explanatory; however, it is noteworthy
that directors often take artistic liberties in interpreting plays or musicals, especially when they may
appear dated to contemporary audiences. This, however, was not the case in the 2017 production of
Bye Bye Birdie because it stuck strictly to script; so much so, that actors could have been exchanged
across plays without any

Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics
Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is
true for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed
and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention
of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and
the Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and
other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get his music heard. Shostakovich had to work
within Stalin's Social Realism. Ravel's "La Valse" is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has
music has been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to
focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 –1919. He studied music theory and violin from the
Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New
York, where he was able to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage.
So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it
served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New
York City. Through this club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece

In the summer of 2015 my first high school band director, Mr. Harlan, left to teach for another high
school. His students learned this when when he posted a Facebook status explaining why he was
leaving. He was starting his own family and wanted to be closer to home. Everyone was devastated.
Without a director the band felt it would fall apart. During my junior year my drumline teacher who
I was close to was in a hit and run accident and was left brain dead a week later. The whole
