This day will forever hold an important day in my life.
It was August 13, 1923 and at 15 years old you can't blame me for wanting to see my friends.
Though my mother had told me specifically not to go ,but me being my teenage self, I didn't listen.
So now I was cleaning the attic as my punishment and that's when I saw it. The it I saw was a box
that was pretty hidden but on it in large print was "KEEP OUT" again my teenage instincts kicked
in. So as quietly as I could I crept over to the box lifted the other stuff that was on top of it, though
afterwards I would look in them, lifted the lid and saw nothing of what I had expected. What was in
the box surprised me because for one all that was in that big box was a couple envelopes and two
from the looks of them they were pretty important. The envelopes had nothing on the outside so I
opened them. From the discoloration of the paper it looked as if they had not been touched in over
15 years. When I unfolded the paper I saw was what I thought was adoption papers. Then I heard
my mother call for dinner without thinking I stuffed the envelopes and papers in my jacket. Then put

Many negative stereotypes are the cause of homosexuals failing to come out the closet to their
friends, family and loved ones. There are also positive effects to coming out as well but the negative
opinions of some has triumphed across the nation during the last decade. Even though it may seem
that our country has come a long way and accepts homosexuals, we still have a long way to go. Why
do such stereotypes override the good effects of coming out gay? Coming out as a homosexual
improves the quality of life such as making the individual feel confident and happier within. My
own experience will serve as an example on how these things can reduce the confidence level in
someone that wants to be open to friends, family and loved ones.

The novel Out of Africa was a very surprising one, and sadly, the plot wasn't the most surprising
part. After reading this novel, a question left to ponder could be, Is the Author, Karen Blixen, a
racist? What drew some to the conclusion that the author was racist was her overwhelmingly
condescending tone throughout the novel.
The tone in the novel Out of Africa was quite interesting to observe. The author did not have a
positive tone in the novel, despite her love for the beautiful land of Africa. Her tone could be

Racism is the belief that all members of each race posses(s) characteristics or abilities specific to
that race, especially as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. So, when

In the story "Out of the Silent Planet" by C.S. Lewis, Ransom, a physiology professor at Oxford
University is kidnapped by two men who take him in a spaceship to Mars, or Malacandra as they
call it. They plan on giving him over to the martians who live on Malacandra but Ransom runs away
in fear he will be killed. As the story progresses, Ransom meets all sorts of martians and becomes
immersed in the culture and language of this planet. Ransom is then faced with being called to meet
a certain spirit of the planet and makes a small journey in search of this being. Through his
experiences on Malacandra, Ransom grows in courage, shows his curiosity and exceptional
intelligence. Throughout the story one sees Ransom grow in courage. When he is kidnapped by
Devine and Weston, Ransom loses the fear that they might harm him and tries to escape from his
captors when Devine and Weston think he is asleep. He is however, unable to get away. Throughout
their journey to Malacandra Ransom loses a bit of his confidence and courage and does not try to

think of it as everything changing. For the most part, that's from the eyes of people who will never

You know that experience you have that you can really never get out of your head? It is not a good

In the documentary "Aging Out" directed by Roger Weisber, it is noticeable how these three
teenagers (Risa, David, and Danielle) were trying to get out of the Foster Care System and become
independent adults. However, each one of them struggled with their task of becoming an

In the book, Out of the Dust, written by Karen Hesse, readers can experience the many emotions of
a teenage girl coming of age in the harsh climate of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. The novel
is historical fiction, written in first person and free verse poetry. The main character, Billie Jo writes
of her turbulent time from the ages of 13 to 14 years, in the form of journal entries. Each entry is
titled and broken down into seasons rather than specific dates. There are several themes repeated in

Why is it so difficult to come out as a Homosexual male? There are several reasons some might hide
their sexuality for a longer time than anticipated. It has also been proven that coming out as a
homosexual can improve quality of life such as making the individual feel confident and happier
within themselves. With the favorable effects also come the adverse effects of coming out. Some of
these reasons may include, but for sure not limited to, dealing with stereotypes from the community,
being disowned by loved ones and encountering homophobic individuals. Today I will tell my
experience of coming out as a homosexual male to my friends and family. I will also share with you
their reactions, comments and the ridiculous stereotypes that lingered and potentially could've
destroyed my relationship with the people I love.
No one wants to admit that they believe some of the stereotypes that get out regarding homosexual
men. However, it is reality that specific stereotypes regarding gay men has erupted in our society

characters reveal the themes of identity, love and power. The theme of power directly relates to the
economic boom in the United States in the 1990s and the population's strive for success. These
themes are brought out through the repetitive use of the color red in the film and are also used to
relate back to the title.

The first shot of this sequence is of Foley sitting in a chair at a desk with a red colored wall behind
him. Right away the color red is introduced on the wall as well as on the desk in pens, the top of a
yogurt, a potted plant and the wrapper of a power bar. After the man who was at the desk in front of
Foley leaves the room, Foley's eyes gaze upon the contents of the desk. The camera pans over the
red objects on the desk and then stops to rest upon the wrapper of the power bar. Half eaten and half
unwrapped, only the red words "power" are exposed. This is an exceptional shot because it reveals
the color red and reveals the word "power", which illustrates the fact that the men in Ripley
Enterprise have power and Foley does not. In the next shot, the man at the desk enters the room
once again holding a suit and Foley turns away from looking at the power bar to blankly staring at

Aging Out of the Foster Care System
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, every year close to 25,000 youth
age out of the foster care system and are faced with cold hard realities of adulthood. This does not
include the youth who leave the system, which is estimated to be another 30,000. Most adolescents
anticipate their eighteenth birthday, as it brings on a new found sense of independence and most
importantly a time of celebration. However when foster children reach eighteen, they begin facing
the challenges of transitioning to adulthood. These children disproportionately join the ranks of the
homeless, incarcerated, and unemployed. These youth are unprepared for the independent life they
are forced to take on. The average age that young adults who have never experienced foster care
leave their family home for good is 24, and 40% return home again at least once afterwards
(Margolin, 2008). With these facts being stated, we yet expect youth who has dealt with rejection
after rejection to leave "home" of the state custody permanently and fin for themselves. These youth
sometimes have fewer than $250 in cash, only one–third have drivers licenses, and fewer than one–
quarter have the basic tools to set up a household, let alone the skills to know what to do with the
tools (Krinsky, 2010). Youth exit care with no more than a garbage bag of their belongings, finding
themselves alone at the age of eighteen, with little reason to celebrate what is supposed to be an

Summary
Coming out from behind the badge is a novel written by a gay police officer named Greg focusing
on homosexuality in the law enforcement profession. Throughout part I of the novel, Greg uses his
own personal stories, as well as other's personal stories, to help those going into law enforcement
have a better understanding of homosexuality in the workplace. Following in part II, Greg gives step
by step advice about coming out of the closet to fellow gay officers, and the ways to create an
accepting workplace for the LGBT community.
By giving perspectives of both gay men in the workplace and straight men who have encountered
gay men in the workplace, it gives the reader real life examples of what it can be like. This book
gives great advice for those who are looking to come out in law enforcement as well as giving good
advice to those who may have fellow LGBT coworkers. It really shows LGBT officers options about
what they can do about coming out in their department while still ensuring a successful law
enforcement career.
Coming out can be scary for both the person coming out and the people they are telling, and
Miraglia does a great job of acknowledging this is the book and giving solutions. The person
