Dear Journal, I was an African American storeowner during the Watts Riots in LA in the 1960s. I
witnessed the destruction of my neighborhood. I witnessed the pain and despair that overwhelmed
so many people because they were a part of a state that did not care to fix the issues that their urban
cities were facing every day. Countless of individuals were filled with so much anger and loss of
hope for a better future. In the 1960s, Los Angeles had very few neighborhoods that African
Americans were "allowed" to live in. Watts progressively became a neighborhood of black poverty

There were all kinds of city leaders at the meeting from members of LA Police Department,
representative of neighborhood groups, African American leaders and the media. All was there to try
to cool the tension and prevent more riots form breaking out. In spite of it all, an African American
high school "youth ran to the microphones and said the rioters would attack adjacent white areas
that evening" (Government Documents Department and the Doheny Electronic Resources Center at
the University of Southern California. , n.d.). This statement set the residents of Watts's attendees in
an uproar. For six days, tons of Watts's residents flooded the streets; I witnessed crowds of angry
oppressed people looting every business in sight, walking away with things that they have wanted
for a long time but just did not that the means to get until this day. I witnessed gangs of people pull
any white driver out of his or her vehicles and beat them repeatedly. Thinking off every unjust
beating their fellow brother or sister received from racist white cops. Businesses burned to the
ground, cars vandalized and set to flames, and there were images all over Watts that expressed to the
nation their frustration of police brutality and social mistreatment of a community and of a race.

The Broad Collection Essay
The Broad Collection is a contemporary art museum being built in downtown Los Angeles. When
completed, it will showcase Eli and Edythe Broad's art collection, consisting of nearly 2,000

From reading the author's book "Ecology of Fear," Mike Davis' main thesis for writing this book
was to make readers become aware of the underlying problems and threats which have existed or
currently exist in Southern California and how these problems shape the way we live today and in
the imminent future as well. Although Davis did not really provide us with any remedies for the
problems facing Southern California, this book made it very clear to the readers that problems do
still exist, although at times they may sound subtle in nature. Of the numerous problems which do

Another problem of suburbanization was that the rampant private development led to the
overdevelopment of the landscape. This overdevelopment was due in large part to the fact that the
private developers were manipulating the city council. The author states, "[a]t the end of the war,
greenbelt zoning for the Valley was actually passed into law by the city council, but it lacked the
broad political support to survive the relentless counterattack of developers and landowners."
(Davis, p. 76). Due to the fact that the city council was so small in size, developers were able to
greatly gain influence in demanding for policies that would enhance their desire for even more
private development. But, lost in this mix was the fact that overdevelopment led to a decreased
amount of public space and the loss of natural beauty to the landscape. "By 1928 parks comprised a
miserable 0.6 percent of the surface of the metropolis...No large city in the United States was so
stingy with public space." (Davis, p. 65). This statistic gives us clear indication of who the culprit
was for the overdevelopment which occurred in Southern California in the 1920s and beyond: the
developers.

The most significant number of outdoor mural art in the United States is just minutes away from
downtown San Diego, but if you've visited the city, you've probably driven over it without even
knowing it. San Diego's Chicano Park is hidden below the San Diego–Coronado Bridge. More than
70 vibrantly colored murals adorn the support pylons of the freeway overpass. The walls pay tribute
to the history of the surrounding Mexican–American and immigrant community called Barrio

The park's story is worth retelling: The bisecting of the Barrio Logan community by I–5 and the
Coronado Bridge, ending in a concrete "roof" supported by large gray pillars, replaced at least 1,500
families. With a society of 20,000 in its heyday in the 1940s, the historic neighborhood was rezoned
as industrial in the 1950s, ushering in junkyards, auto–wrecking operations, plating and chemical
companies, and now, a legacy of environmental and air condition issues.

Introduction
In the world of sports arenas there is one that stands as a pivotal high point above almost all other
stadiums. The University of Southern California's mammoth of a stadium, the Los Angeles
Memorial Coliseum is one of the biggest sports stadiums in college football, and has been a standard
by which others are judge. Being declared a land mark by the state of California after nearly 80
years of use, this structure has had many different uses other than its current purpose of housing one
of the most dominate teams in college football, the Trojans. Since its opening day the stadium has
set world record in attendance and then beaten the same records hosting some of the most famous

changes have taken place and the facility has had to adapt to the new century. Advances in

What is the true value of human life? Better yet, is a human's life more or less important than
money? In many cases, the pieces of cloth outweighs people, and most of the time, minorities, such
as Latinos, Native Americans, and African–Americans, and poverty–stricken people are the ones
impacted. In America, placing poor individuals in unfavorable environmental conditions is due to
the country's capitalistic economic and political structure: the value of money exceeds everything
else. Throughout American history, Latinos have been subject to environmental abuse. Gilbert
Estrada explores the situation from the 1940s through 1960s, when countless number of highways
and freeways were placed in East Los Angeles – a community with a population highly concentrated

Southern California traffic can be very frustrating. I drive the freeway almost every day and the

Santa Ana Winds Comparison Rhetorical Analysis
The Santa Ana Winds " The Santa Ana" by Joan Didion and "Brush Fire" by Linda Thomas offer
complete separate views to a similar topic, the winds of Southern California. In a first person
narration the authors write of the wind from her own experience of living in California and from her
own perspective, shedding light on two very different aspects of the Santa Ana winds.
Physically, both pieces of literature are different. Each story reflects its own writer as "The Santa

Didion personifies the wind as almost an unknown epidemic. Similar to when an unknown disease
goes viral, all walks of life are affected. Didion clearly states how teachers, students, doctors, to
physicists, to generally everyone becomes unhappy and uncomfortable during the winds. She does
not write of how the wind caused fire to ravage the shrublands, but she writes of the symptoms it
inflicts on the people. Didion mentions all the after effects of the wind and the harm it can do like
inflict paranoia. She mentions how the fear–stricken victims of southern California are paranoid like
her neighbor that refuses to leave the house and her husband who roams with a machete. Didion's
personification of the wind focuses on a fearful and distant light. In contrast, Thomas approaches the
Santa Ana winds as a routinely destructive awe. Though Thomas focuses more on the fire caused by
the wind, then the wind itself, Thomas casts a soft light on the winds. She believes that the winds are
not destructive, but that humans are and the winds only do what they must. She and her neighbors
gather around and watch the brushfire destroy a hill in the distance, a casual pastime like watching
stars. Thomas casually explains in paragraph three of "Brush Fire", "the burning of chaparral during
these winds is normal". She implies that the winds cause of destroying the Southern California land

The Field Of Medicine Study Biology
[T]raditional education has students focusing on one career at a time, generally encompassing a very
specific field of interest. Students interested in the field of medicine study biology and don't
generally study much outside of science. Or, students interested in music study musical theory and
learn several different instruments – they don't cross over into other fields of thought. This type of
learning, however, really doesn't reflect the way the world works. It doesn't even properly reflect
human experience: many students are puzzled when it comes to choosing a field of study. They
settle on one because there hasn't been an option available that combines their interests in a practical
way, or it simply isn't shown to them.
The interactions of this world, however, revolve around many different fields of thought combining
and working together. People nowadays need to be educated in a way that properly represents this
experience: the "big picture" experience. They need to be able to look to the future, expand
horizons, and combine fields of interest and thought to reach a new level of innovation in today's
world.
In the fall of 2014, a new undergraduate program was created for just this kind of education. The
University of Southern California has established the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young
Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation thanks to a $70 million gift from

In May of 2015, the California Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation
Authority held a public hearing to gather feedback from the community about potential
environmental concerns related to the 710 Freeway extension project. In a report released by
Caltrans earlier that year, five potential alternatives were mentioned in relation to the closure of the
4.5 mile gap in the freeway (between Alhambra and Pasadena). These alternatives included bus and

Some are now supporting suggestions to build a new neighborhood instead of completing the 710
Freeway. It seems the debate is neverending. The idea to skip use the gap to build a new
neighborhood came from a Pasadena–based architectural firm, Stefanos Polyzoides with Moule &
Polyzoides. Polyzoides suggests that Caltrans sell the land near the northern end of where the 710
Freeway is supposed to be to the city of Pasadena. The city could then redevelop the land into
housing, businesses, etc. His mention of incorporating a "tree boulevard" only makes the plan sound
better. The Pasadena architect presented his plan at a West Pasadena Residents' Association meeting.
It included a mixture of single family housing on the southern end of the 50–acre segement in
Pasadena with more dense housing closer to the 210 Freeway. Of course, businesses would be
incorporated throughout the neighborhood, as well. The design is being compared to Old Town

Abstract Live Fuel Moisture (LFM) is a dryness measure used by fire departments to determine the
level of dryness from the current situation in different parts of the forest. This work deals with
mapping LFM using remote sensing products including an analysis of a standardized regression
methodology and the examination of various vegetation indices derived from MODIS. The analysis
revealed the use of standardized NDVI product as the most suitable for Live Fuel Moisture
mapping. By examining the mapped LFM product we observed the appearance of extremely high
dry fuels being analogous with the occurrence of very dry years. In addition, the appearances of
extreme dry fuels revealed a tendency to be a precursor prior to wildfire events. Furthermore, it was
examined the presence of extreme dry fuels in periods when the season changes from spring to

I believe that the study was limited in what it studied outside of school. For example, we a child is
not in school they were considered to be at home, but that does not mean they spent all of that time
at their home. I know many children will attend daycare or go to the boys and girls club after school.

school has been associated with adverse health effects, specifically on the respiratory system,
resulting in an increased prevalence of asthma in children. The Southern California Children's
Health Study was designed to look at the chronic effects of air pollution on respiratory health.
Previous research has shown an association of asthma with those that live in residential areas in
close proximity to major roadways and exposure to traffic pollutants.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the link between traffic related air pollution and
childhood incident asthma in southern California. They hypothesized that children's exposure to
traffic related pollution at school and home both contribute to the risk of new onset asthma. This
was a cohort study in which the subjects were enrolled in the Children's Healthy Study (CHS) from
forty–five different schools in thirteen different communities and were followed for several years.

It never crossed my mind that both my academic life and the privilege to attend USC would ever be
in jeopardy. At first, I believed that my transition from a community college into a 4–year institution

extreme lack of confidence. This all began when I started to not comprehend the material that was

It was a blistering summer day and it was so hot you could fry eggs on the sidewalk. I remember the

your wastefulness with their iPhones. Then uploading the evidence for the world to see – and the
newly empowered local Glendale water agency – to blatantly see. Within five minutes of me starting
to wash my car, I look behind me and there were the water district people. They did the whole
calling me "mam" cliche and asking whether I knew the laws. In the end, they wrote me up a

I've always dreamt of hiking a mountain in my lifetime, traveling to California constantly, and to
eventually live there someday. My cousin, Kristen Burns, had been dating her boyfriend, Nate
Colbert, for two years. On their regular morning hike at seven in the morning, in the mountains of
Simi Valley, California, they decided to take a different trail on Mount McCoy. At the top of the
trail, Nate got down on one knee and proposed to my cousin Kristen. Soon, I got a call from her. She
told me the good news and caught my attention by surprise. She had asked me to be a bridesmaid in
her wedding because of how close we have been my entire life, considering she is eleven years older
than I. Her wedding was the following October, in 2016, but she had asked me to fly out in January
to help her find the dress of her dreams.
The next couple months, my mom and I had started planning my trip to California. I was flying out
with my other cousin, Janine, who is the twin sister of Kristen. By the time January rolled around,
my mom drove me to meet Janine, in Columbia, the day before we started our travels. I spent the
night up in Columbia with her, and the next morning we arose early in order to accomplish errands
