The Role Of Mayhem In Egypt
Mayhem in Egypt!
The events that took place before tonight are from my own observation. I, the first born of Pharaoh,
give you all the information I can concerning the nine plagues that took place in Egypt, because my
father would not let the Israelites go. I was talking with my father when two strange men came into
the palace.
The one man claimed himself to be Moses, and my father's eyes darkened with anger. My father told
me to leave but I was curious to see what might take place, so I hid behind the nearest pillar and
listened.
The man rambled on about God wanting my father to let our slaves, the Israelites, go or bad things
would happen. God? Who is God? Neither my father nor I knew. I laughed a little because of the
nonsense that this "Moses" was speaking. If our gods have never talked back to us, then why does
he think that the Israelite's God would speak to him? I left because I lost interest in the whole matter,
and because I thought father would catch me standing there at some point. ... Show more content on

Moses came back as well as his friend and attempted the same thing they tried to do yesterday. I did
not understand why, and then it got a little bit more interesting. During their next conversation, my
father decided to challenge them to see if their God was real by showing him a miracle from God.
Moses accepted, and told his friend to throw his rod on the floor, and when he did, it turned into a
snake. This was no surprise to me for my father's Magicians could do that too, and they showed him,
but the man's snake devoured all of the other snakes! My father was angry, and he sent them away
with the same answer he gave them last time, no. I walked out but this time I was more impressed
with Moses, but I still did not believe that this was a miracle from the so–called

Project Mayhem: The Destruction Of Western Civilization
Near the end of Fight Club, Tyler and the narrator form a group called Project Mayhem, a group of
highly trained, well disciplined men that are hell bent on the destruction of Western Civilization. A
real life Project Mayhem does not need to be a symbolic grand show of force. It does not take such
talent and dedication to destroy millions, if not billions of American infrastructure. A team of half a
dozen men with no military or private training could easily disrupt the lives of everyday Americans
with a little bit of coordination. To start, all that one would need to do to destroy a line of fiber optic
cable would be to dig it up and bend it until it cracks. That would destroy about a mile and a half of
cable. Then, the power company would

Fight Club Capitalism
Fight Club is a narrative for life showing the purpose of shaping individual identity through society,
capitalism, and the impact of consumer culture. Fight Club takes what defines you, your house, job,
family, and social relations and takes it all away in hopes to find your true self. Your real true self–
being a better version of what you were before, one that doesn't follow the social values, the
influence of capitalism, and instead literally fights for something different, something to feel and be
real. Fight Club takes you from buying fancy furniture, to realising what really matters in your life
and what's important. The book does this through fight clubs and project mayhem to make you
realise that you're not truly happy, and "Maybe self–improvement ... Show more content on

Fight Club wasn't about how you defined yourself, your job, your house, how much money you had,
your social life, or any other reason. Fight Club is literally fighting for something real, putting
everything about you aside to focus on one central goal. "Two men to a fight, one fight at a time, no
shoes, no shirts, fights go on as long as they have to... if this is your first night at fight club, you
have to fight" (50). Fight club was a way for everyone regardless if you were a doctor, lawyer,
cashier, or business man to escape your troubles in life, your worries, and do something real. Fight
club has real consequences, and it is a way to offer an escape from who you think you are to learn
who you really are. During Fight Club, you have a new persona, and it makes you realize that you
are unhappy with your life, and gives you a way to change it. Fight Club does this by abandoning all
social aspects, creating guided rules, and giving people a chance to start living. However, Fight Club
never solves any issues or problems, it just gives people a way to deal with the stress of their regular
life. Ever week men got to fight, using their frustrations to kick the living hell out of each other. It is
almost like Fight Club was an out–of–body experience for the participants, and turning them into a
whole other person for the entirety of the fight. Fight Club was the start to finding out who you
really were, it was a recruitment for the men willing to escape the consumer culture, and strike back
to those who held you down. Fight Clubs were appearing all across the United States, they were
becoming a social movement that would further evolve into Project Mayhem (a group of elite
people willing to abandon normal social life to stick it to the system by any means

Psychological disorders are widely represented in films, as well as in other media texts such as
novels, television shows, etc. One film that portrays more than one example of a psychological
disorder is Fight Club, a Twentieth Century Fox movie released with an R rating in 1999. Directed
by David Fincher; and produced by Art Linson, Cean Chaffin, and Ross Grayson Bell, the movie
mainly introduces Dissociative Identity Disorders (also known as Multiple Personality Disorders),
but also hints at insomnia and depression. The movie is adapted from the book Fight Club written by
Chuck Palahniuk. Fox marketed the movie using a "myriad of merchandise, including posters, the

Tyler gives the impression that he lives life to the fullest, and appears to be the complete opposite of
Narrator/Jack. When Narrator/Jack returns home after his business trip, he stands below his condo,
which he "loved" and watches as it and all of his beloved material possessions, which made him feel
complete burns away. Narrator/Jack thought that he needed all of his expensive material objects to
feel complete; because where others obtained these objects for necessity he used them to measure
his self–worth. "Sociologists call the process of actively creating meaning in this way the ‘social
construction of reality'. This means that, while reality exists, we must negotiate the meaning of that
reality" (Croteau & Hoynes 7). Left with no place to go, Narrator/Jack first calls Marla but quickly
changes his mind at the last moment and contacts Tyler instead. They go out and have some drinks
after which Tyler tells Jack that he can stay with him. After agreeing to move in together, in return
Tyler asks Jack to hit him as hard as he can. Hesitantly, Narrator/Jack agrees and they end up
fighting in the parking lot of the bar which gives both of them a bit of release and happiness.
Narrator/Jack's reaction upon reaching Tyler's house, lacking normal electricity and looking as

Fight Club Essay
Fight Club In the book Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk, the narrator is an employee for a travelling
car company, who suffers from insomnia. When he asks his doctor for medication the doctor refuses
and advises him to visit a support group to witness what suffering really is. The first group the
narrator attends is for testicular cancer victims. He finds an emotional release that relieves his
insomnia and becomes addicted to support groups. After a flight home from a business trip, the
narrator realizes that his apartment was destroyed by a homemade explosion. He calls Tyler Durden,
a man who he met on the flight. Tyler and the narrator meet at a bar, and start to fight. They continue

This quote was said right before the narrator and Tyler engaged into a fight. This quote was the root
of the formation of fight club. This quote also states that the narrator is not independent and lost a
form of his power by listening to what Tyler had told him. The narrator had the option of being
independent by not hitting Tyler and engaging into a fight, but the power Tyler had over him was
overbearing for him to stop. Once the narrator asks Tyler to stay at his home, this is a defining
moment of where Tyler has more control of the narrator by letting him into his home. This moment
also shows how the narrator is losing power by moving into the house of the man that has control
over him. The Formation of Project Mayhem is an aspect of how the narrator is losing control by a
political organization created by Tyler. Project Mayhem is a secret organization that was formed by
the Fight Club, and led by Tyler Durden. Project Mayhem was created to fight against rich people
who don't care about the white collar working class and it is a war on civilization, consumerism and
the world they live in. Project Mayhem was formed by Tyler and the narrator was not told about
which had angered him. Tyler had control over the narrator's power because Tyler is gaining control
over the narrator by creating groups without the narrator realizing. Another way of which Tyler has
power over everyone including the narrator is because he also made the rules and announces

Consumerism In Tyler Durden's Fight Club
One of the main themes in Fight Club is the growing problem of consumerism, and of course how to
solve it. It was this problem that propelled Tyler Durden to gradually lay the foundations of Project
Mayhem, which would allegedly lead to the demise of consumerism in society. Although most
participants of the various Fight Clubs seemed to believe that they were solving the problem with
Project Mayhem, this was evidently not the case. Project Mayhem eventually became what it was
created to destroy. The project aimed to collapse civilisation and set man free from the consumerist
world; a world which had fallen into a cycle of obliviousness to supposed oppression from the elite
upper class. Tyler Durden was not blind to this oppression. It was his mission disrupt order in any,
and all ways possible. Whether it be splicing pornography into movies or ruining someone's soup at
a restaurant, he refused to conform to the order of society. This is where Project Mayhem was
rooted, and where it would inevitably grow to become its antithesis. ... Show more content on

The act is one of many in a series of vandalism across the unnamed city, and it was seemingly
insignificant. What is more significant in this circumstance, is rather the order behind the chaos. The
narrator asks, "Was it the Mischief Committee or the Arson Committee?" (Page 119) Whenever a
committee is mentioned, one would assume that a sense of order or organisation would be involved,
and order is the proposed enemy of Project Mayhem, hence the "Mayhem" in its name. To reinforce
the idea of order within the project, the narrator suggests that it may have been a "homework
assignment," (Page 119). This is a clear reference to typical school work, in which there is a

Compare And Contrast Allstate And State Farm
Every driver is required to have car insurance in order to drive legally in the United States. The
problem, however, is choosing the right one. Two of the major companies today are Allstate and
State Farm. In the Allstate commercial, a man portrays "Mayhem" to show drivers the risks they
experience while driving on the road. The man says he is modeling a blind spot and that not many
people see what hides in them, resulting in an accident. In the State Farm commercial, two situations
are shown, one of which was a teenage girl getting her first car, and the other a grown man getting
his car broken into. This commercial shows that State Farm is there through good and bad times. To
achieve their purposes, both of these brands apply pathos, ethos, and logos to their commercials.
Both of these commercials incorporate the exaggeration of a particular situation to ignite humor and
laughter among the audience. In the Allstate commercial, a man is holding onto the side of a car to
portray the driver's blind spot, telling the driver that the coast is clear. Suddenly, a truck comes out
of nowhere, causing an accident. This is humorous because the sight of the man hanging on the side
of the vehicle, acting as the blind spot, provides an exaggeration that causes the audience to laugh
(Blind Spot Commercial | Allstate Mayhem Internet). This shows the danger of driving in order to
catch the audience's attention. In the State Farm commercial, by providing two different situations

Fight Club By Chuck Palahniuk
Today's society is essentially powered by consumerism, capitalism, and the media; supplying
people's thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and lives. The psychological novel, Fight Club, by Chuck
Palahniuk, uses a man's need for a male role of identity to fit in into society as a way of showing
how consumerism can be threatening a man's identity and masculinity. Palahniuk explores the life of
a man who in an attempt to break free of a capitalist society forms a clandestine "fight club" as a
form of rebellion towards society. Palahniuk illustrates in, Fight Club, a character that, challenged
by today's consumerism culture, struggles to find his true self–identity and express his masculinity.
Since, the beginning of the novel we see the protagonist, a nameless narrator, as a man suffering
from an identity and masculinity crisis. The narrator recounts in chapter two of Fight Club how
attending support groups for terminal illness such as brain parasites, tuberculosis, and testicular
cancer, helped his insomnia. The first time he realized it was when he allowed himself to cry in a
testicular cancer group, along with Bob, a man who had his testicles removed and produced "bitch
tits" as a result of hormone therapy. Throughout the novel Bob also known as Robert Paulson, once
a bodybuilder and steroid abuser, served as a physical manifestation of a masculinity crisis and
provided a feminine aspect that the main character feared of. Bob also displays, the recurring fear of

Movie Analysis : Fight Club
Fight Club, a critically acclaimed film debuted in 1999, is concentrated around the central belief of
unifying individuals that are not socially accepted by society. It is when a depressed man, "the
narrator" who faces insomnia and has a mental disorder that falls along the lines of multiple
personality disorder, meets a soap salesman who shares the same living quarters and become bored
with everyday, materialistic life they form an underground club with strict rules which enable them
to fight other men. Fight Club is a secret group that is developed with the purpose of unifying
individuals that drift away from material possessions and give up face for the betterment of the

Tyler Durden lays down the ground rules every week that indicates how things are to be done and
guide each member's behavior before the fighting begins. The rules include: first and foremost, you
do not talk about fight club, you do not talk about fight club, if someone yells stop, goes limp, or
taps out, the fight is over, there should only be two guys to a fight, only one fight at a time, no shirts
and no shoes are to be worn, fights will go on as long as they have to, and if it is your first night of
fight club you have to fight. The mandated structures are put in place to restrict certain behavior but
also to enable the group to understand how they are expected to behave and interact with one
another.
Typically the theory of socialization can be seen in any group large or small. Within (Tyler Durden
's) group of Fight Club one can see how many decisions and group actions play out by looking at the
theory. As mentioned above, the theory has so many different agents and structures that play such
major key roles in the theory that it is hard to choose just one element or aspect of the theory to
study. The theory originally coined by a man named Anthony Giddens had some backlash within the
recent years due to claims that the theory cannot help predict actions and expectations taken on by
an individual. So many people create a structure

Fight Club Analysis
Do you find yourself lost, searching for self–worth in modern Society? The Narrator in Chuck
Palahniuk's novel Fight Club struggles with insomnia due to his repetitive nine to five office–job.
He longs to feel alive, thinking that purchasing materialistic objects and conforming to what modern
society considers the norm will fill his void. Tyler Durden, The Narrators alter ego states, "the first
step to eternal life is you have to die" (Palahniuk 11). His extreme statement represents that one
must let go and forget everything they have come to know in order to truly be free from the
pressures society places on them. The conflict in Fight Club is the internal battle to find purpose and
one's role in modern day America. The Narrator's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His sense of helplessness allows him to realize that at some point everyone will die and soon be
forgotten. This idea supports the fact that The Narrator is searching for purpose and is unhappy with
his life up to this point. The Narrator is beginning to believe in the thought that intimate experiences
have more internal satisfaction than the materialistic objects that occupy his home. During what The
Narrator calls dreams, the readers get introduced to his alter ego, Tyler Durden. Tyler is everything
The Narrator desires to be. He is flamboyant and carefree. The Narrator has a jealous obsession with
Tyler, unknown to his conscious mind, that Tyler and himself are the same person. The sex driven
relationship Tyler has with Martha Singer proves this thought correct. Martha is infatuated with
Tyler. The Narrator cannot stand that Martha gets more attention from Tyler than he does. The
Narrator is still unaware to the fact that Tyler is actually himself and they share the same woman.
The story often portrays Tyler as some sort of holy like symbol. In Fight Club Tyler often recites its
rules, "The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club" (Palahniuk 48). The
members of Fight Club will then recite the rules back as if Tyler is a preacher or a god leading a
congregation. Justin Garrison writes in his article God's Middle Children' Metaphysical Rebellion in

for example, through country conflicts to world wars, violence seems to be the tool to our defense.
Even in our daily lives, when encountered a conflict, we humans want to make it disappear as quick
as possible. We do this by using violence unconsciously, whether it is verbally or physically. To the

Tyler uses violence as a tool for control frequently, specifically in Project Mayhem. In Project
Mayhem, the members, referred to as spacemonkeys, feel violence is necessary in achieving their
goals of anarchy. The actions begin with simple destructive attacks on specific individuals or things.
For example, whenever an authority stands between the spacemonkeys and their missions, they
simply castrate the opposition. In another example, spacemonkeys threaten to murder an individual
at gunpoint if they do not pursue their true aspirations in life. However, small petty acts of violence
escalade into much more violent, terrorist–like attacks. In fact, Tyler wants to literally destroy every
by–product of the consumer culture; he states, "We wanted to blast the world free of history. You'll
hunt elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center, and dig clams next
to the skeleton of the Space Needle leaning at a forty–five degree angle" (116). These visions
become realities; the novel culminates in Project Mayhem attempting, although unsuccessfully, to
explode world's tallest building. Both the Narrator and Tyler use violence as a form of escape.

Irony In Fight Club And Project Mayhem
The creators chose to suggest that the members of Fight Club and Project Mayhem are not really
free nonconformists. Lynn M Ta from the Journal of American Culture states, The irony is that Fight
Club and later Project Mayhem, reproduces the same effects of capitalism by creating the illusion of
freedom through the demands of self–regulation and self–punishment. It is upon this contradiction
that Fincher's dark comedy hinges, for the film's satirical edge relies on the realization that these
individuals seek relief from an oppressive capitalistic order through means that are equally
conforming and repressive (265). The quote explains that the members of Fight Club are free to
express their beliefs and act according to the anarchy code. Although

Feminism And Capitalism In Fight Club By David Fincher
According to Marx, all of human history has been the history of class struggle. In capitalist
societies, antagonism unfolds between the owners of the means of production and the workers.
Symptomatic of the worker's struggle is the effects of exploitation which cause all parts of human
life, including one's life as whole, to become mere commodities to be bought and sold. It is a
Marxist belief that the oppression and dissatisfaction of the working class will inevitably lead to a
revolt in which the goal is to regain equality. Project Mayhem in David Fincher's Fight Club can be
viewed as a failed Marxist working–class revolt due to the fact that in attempting to reinforce
equality for all, it ends up objectifying its members. "The worker becomes all the poorer the more
wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and range. The worker becomes an
ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. With the increasing value of the world of
things proceeds in direct proportion the devaluation of the world of men."
Integral to understanding the Marxist antipathy for capitalism is to understand the role of private
property in the exploitation of working class members. Historically, private ownership did not begin
with capitalism. Prior to capitalism, exploitation stemming from private ownership was present in
slave societies and in feudal societies. However, with capitalism, this exploitation takes on a slightly
different form. In part, this difference in

I blend into the background quite nicely; no one cares about the guy that sits in the back and never

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Insurance Commercial
In commercials for insurance agencies I have noticed a reoccurring theme. They will show you the
very thing you would want protection from. They use fear to lure you into buying insurance from
their agency. This happens in Allstate's line of "mayhem like me" commercials. First, you will see a
grown man driving a pink SUV. The man introduces himself as a teenage girl and proceeds to tell
you why he is distracted, "My bff Becky texted and said she kissed Johnny." The man then drives
into a parked car and does not stop, but continues driving instead. He closes with saying, "So get

It is a well–known and trusted insurance agency. They do not have to mention this in their

The target audience for this commercial is car owners. If you are too young to own a car, an
insurance agency advertising car insurance will not interest you. A person who does not own a car
might get a kick out of the humor in the commercial but will not bother thinking about the
commercial much further. I believe Allstate does a wonderful job with these "mayhem like me"
commercials. When you use the same theme for multiple commercials it leaves the audience excited
to see what comes next. The audience will also get attached to the character that keeps coming back.
My favorite aspect of these commercials is that the main character is always put in outrageous
situations that a human being isn't normally put in. This Allstate "mayhem like me" advertisement is
a well–rounded commercial as it plays to pathos, logos, and ethos, not just one appeal. By playing

The Ideology Of Project Mayhem Or Fight Club
Interestingly, Pleck in Phillips, 2006, argues that men actually over–conform to proposed masculine
traits when they feel they have violated hegemonic masculine ideology and this can manifest into
violence (p.407). With reference to this, Clark, 2002, suggests that consumerism has assigned men
'passive' and 'ornamental' roles typically reserved for females, and this again can result in 'violent
repercussions' (p.65). This would further qualify the argument that Project Mayhem's purpose is to
destroy consumerism as Tyler, and the narrator believes it will result in a resurgence of 'traditional'
masculinity; moreover, Tyler uses the simile of firing a gun to be 'like your jism' (p.122) to
emphasise the connotations of masculinity related to destruction. ... Show more content on

However, the ideology of Project Mayhem/fight club is contradicted by Tyler's/the narrator's actions
after Tyler is 'rejected' from his job at the Pressman Hotel (p.113–117). In this chapter, Tyler/the
narrator goads the Hotel Manager into physically assaulting themselves for the purpose of
blackmail. From one perspective, it could be argued that this ultimately gives Tyler/the narrator
power over a consumerist corporation. On the other hand, it could be argued that this actually
feminizes Tyler/the narrator by 'enjoying' being physically hurt by another male. This is supported
by Ta's (2006, p.273)) argument that 'to be the aggressor is to be masculine and to receive is to be

Masculinity In David Fincher's Fight Club
On the surface, director David Fincher's 1999 film Fight Club, based on the novel by the same
name, is a journey into underground fighting and ultra–macho male bonding. It becomes much more
than the obvious observations though. In a 2014 Comic con appearance, Fincher states, "'Fight Club'
is about moving through a modern disconnected society," Fincher goes on to say, "It's a satire. Many
don't get that." (Stedman). The film chronicles the depressed, sleep deprived, and obsessive life of
the main character, who remains nameless throughout the film. The main character, played by
Edward Norton, narrates the film. The narrator describes his daily struggles of insomnia,
consumerism, and his search for identity. Amidst his struggles he meets Tyler ... Show more content

People desire freedom; the men in Fight Club are no different. They seek to be free from boring jobs
and the everyday tasks that hold them captive. They desire to be a part of Project Mayhem as an
escape, a way out, but they continue to just be small cogs for a larger vision. In describing the
differences between the fight club and Project Mayhem, Olivia Burgess says," Though both fight
club and Project Mayhem propose strategies for change, fight club is an open–ended community
promoting difference, while Project Mayhem is a goal–driven regime enforcing obedience and
stasis." (Burgess). One must ask, have they found freedom, or have they just become slaves to a
different cause? The men seem to be filled with a renewed purpose in life. But is this any different
than before? They're still working menial jobs and doing exactly what they're told to do. The only
difference? Instead of working for a paycheck, they're working for Tyler. The late movie critic
Roger Ebert said," Of course, "Fight Club" itself does not advocate Durden's philosophy. It is a
warning against it, I guess; one critic I like says it makes "a telling point about the bestial nature of
man and what can happen when the numbing effects of day–to–day drudgery cause people to go a
little crazy." I think it's the numbing effects of movies like this that cause people go to a little crazy"
(Ebert). In the end, Tyler's own "society" becomes

Comparison Of Marx And Fight Club
Marx, a trenchant physical monist saw an excessive dissonance between an individual's labour and
the capitalist system in which the labourer works. He theorised that 'capitalism is a self–destructive
economic system because the poor proletariat will inevitably rise up and displace those currently in
positions of power and oppression' (2008: 44). Tyler's statement, 'we are all part of the same
compost heap...' is the slang version of the basis of sociology that they are all in it together. In
accordance with Marx's view, the inequality and social–conflict these men felt on an individual basis
helped them to gather as an adhocracy. Critics Read Mercer Schuchardt and Chuck Palahniuk
support this notion as they state 'Anarchy and revolt are some of the more radical ways those who
feel trapped in a financial system have sought to redress this social discord' (2008: 43). ... Show

The Fight Club By Chuck Palahniuk
Koby Gordon Mr. Smith Senior English: Fight Club Essay 8 September 2014 Violence as a Coping
Method In the novel Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, what it means to be alive is examined through
violent underground boxing rings, featured in cities around the world. The story follows an unnamed
narrator, who lives a monotonous yet well off life, and his alter ego, Tyler Durden, a more
freethinking and violent character, as he explores himself and the essence of living through
participating in a fight club. Growing from the narrator's many years living in a healthy and stable
life, in which he struggles to characterize himself as an individual, the alter ego of Tyler Durden
embodies the narrator's darkest desires. As the narrator fades away each night, Tyler Durden takes
over his body, early on leading men to participate in relatively harmless fight clubs to experience
pain and masculinity, to later collaborating with the same men in the much larger and more harmful
Project Mayhem, a movement to assert dominance on the world. Following stringent rules in an
effort to keep these organizations unknown to the outside world, the men partake in violent activities
that give them a rush that keeps them coming back, and a transitory sense of importance that
through the escalation of violence, they try to turn more lasting. Ultimately, the method of coping
with real life issues through violence that offers an only ephemeral feeling of self–importance is
unsuccessful. Fight club is

Summary Of The Rhetoric Of Advertising Hirschberg
In "The Rhetoric of Advertising", Hirschberg describes three forms of persuasion associated with
Aristotle that advertisers us to attract people. Hirschberg first starts by stating pathos as a form of
persuasion that triggers people's emotions. Secondly, Hirschberg describes logos as a form of
persuasion that uses reason, evidence, and logic. Lastly, Hirschberg describes ethos as a method of
persuasion that is used to show the credibility of the product and company that is advertising. In
Hirschberg's "The Rhetoric of Advertising", advertisers use pathos to sadden and frighten people in
order to sell a product. Advertisers use pathos in order to sadden people into purchasing the product
the company is selling. In order for the advertisement to achieve a sentimental appeal to the
audience, most ads take the viewer into a past time of nostalgia. As mentioned in Hirschberg's "The
Rhetoric of Advertising", "Grandmotherly figures wearing aprons and holding products that are
advertised as being "like Grandma used to make" offer the consumer an imaginary past, a family
tradition, or a simpler time looked back to with warmth and sentimentality" (270). By creating an ad

Solipsism In The Fight Club
From the beginning of the Fight Club, Tyler's apparent purpose, in the forming of Fight Club and
Project Mayhem, was to bring the narrator to rock bottom in order to take him out of the
unsatisfying everydayness of his life. The narrator develops a form of solipsistic therapy that allows
his own mind to find a way to heal himself. In this way, he learns that in order to start over in life he
needs let go of all his physical possessions and begin again with nothing. Once he hits rock bottom,
there would be nowhere left to go but up. In addition, he initiates Project Mayhem in an attempt to
create as much chaos as possible in order to spread his therapy further. This type of therapeutic
strategy is similar to the methodology of crossfit training, which focus on specific areas of weakness
in training. This therapy employs a form of personal solipsism in order to confront the narrator's
issues, because Tyler knew that only he was able to control and understand his own conscience. The
first step towards Tyler's downward spiral in his life, which also led him to start joining therapy
groups, was when the narrator was denied any medication for his insomnia by a doctor. After the
doctor refused to acknowledge his suffering, Tyler realized that he would find no solace in asking
for help, and he reacted to this by relying on personal solipsism to help himself. The form of therapy
that he develops, which would initially establish the first Fight Club, was based around the theory
that

Examples Of Mary Warren In The Crucible
Mary Warren: The one to blame for all the mayhem in Salem Village Many people would go straight
to accusing Abigail Williams for all the mayhem in Salem Village, but she definitely should not have
all of the blame. Many others were falsely accusing people and one in particular even had
opportunities to end it all, and that girl is Mary Warren. Driven by fear, Mary Warren, in Arthur
Miller's, The Crucible, lies and falsely accusing innocent people; ultimately leaving 20 people dead
and many more in an awful jail. Mary Warren accused innocents of witchcraft, did not end all the
hysteria even with opportunities, and is the reason many people are dead, specifically John Proctor.
Mary Warren did many awful deeds and the first being that she accused many people she knew to be
innocents of witchcraft. Mary Warren pretending to be afflicted led to many people being sentenced
to prison Mary did not have to pretend to be afflicted, she could have said a number of things and
not started pretending and getting people in jail. This shows that Mary had a part in the hysteria at
Salem Village, because she could have chose not to pretend to be afflicted and bring people in on
her own accusations. Pretending to be afflicted is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

David Fincher 's Cult Classic Fight Club
David Fincher's 1999 cult classic Fight Club often gets picked apart for it's supposed depiction of
toxic masculinity and contemporary manhood but what I want to focus on is the anti–consumer,
anti–capital, and pro–elimination of social classes that is also displayed throughout the film. Not to
say that the film does not represent white bourgeoisie hyper–masculinity but to look at the parts of
the film that doesn't feed into this train of thought. I want to expand the lens past Norton's character,
which I will call Jack for simplicity, and to Brad Pitt's character, Tyler Durden's Project Mayhem
and the underlining values that Durden preaches. I argue that Project Mayhem manages to unite the
proletariat and form the beginnings of what appears to be a Marxian revolution. This conclusion
may seem an odd one due to the white–collar, bourgeois job that Jack holds in the beginning of the
movie. The bourgeoisie are the owners of capital by definition1 and considered to be the middle
class workers of our society. However, Jack's job allows for a depiction of how capitalism turns
humans into commodities. Jack is a recall coordinator for a major car company. His job is to "apply
the formula"2, as he tells one of his single serving friends on an airline flight. His formula
determines whether or not the company should recall a vehicle due to a malfunction. The formula
goes; "you take the number of vehicles in the field (A) and multiply it by the probable rate of failure

actor notorious for
playing dangerous roles in movies and TV series, plays the a version of "mayhem." Allstate is

In choosing Winters for the role of teenage "mayhem," Allstate already has the viewer
subconsciously worrying about how dangerous their own teenager's "mayhem" really is. This then
triggers the need to protect their children. The tone of any piece of writing or commercial sets up the
viewer for what to expect from the piece, and Winters' effortless monotone does just that. If this
were not such a witty commercial, his deep and serious voice would send chills up anyone's back––
although he's talking in the dialect of a teenage girl, his voice remains his own. Were he to talk
instead in a higher–pitched "teenage girl" voice, Allstate would not be able to get their message
across––the idea that mayhem is unpredictable and dangerous. Although what he says is funny, it is
how he says it that triggers a parent's worry for their children. With the increasing numbers of cell
phone usage related accidents, many companies are pushing to stop text messaging while driving.
When Allstate shows "mayhem," aka Dean Winters, text messaging and hitting another vehicle as a
result, it again taps into a parent's desire for their children's safety. Recent safe driving laws have
prohibited the use of cell phones while driving. However statistics show increasing numbers in cell
phone usage related accidents. A recent study by a local attorney's office states that, each year, 21%

Negative Effects Of Isolation In Society
The way an individual acts or behaves produces an outcome. This is a universal aspect that can
cause positive or negative effects. In the stories of Hamlet by William Shakespeare, The Stranger by
Albert Camus, and Lord of The Flies by William Golding, there is an immense presence of disorder
existing in the societies of the following stories. This is exemplified by specific main characters and
their isolation from the society, which creates harmful results. Additionally, the fatal flaw of the
major characters plays a key role because it leads to their impactful downfall. Lastly, the poor
treatment of women displays an unjust society. Ultimately, mayhem is caused by specific behaviours

Meursault's isolation is truly depicted when the people of his community claim that his murder is a
result of his detachment from society. During his interrogation, the detective starts "out by saying
that people were describing him as a taciturn and withdrawn person"(2.1.8) in relation with when he
asks the people if Meursault would be the type of person to commit murder. This displays how
isolation has taken control over his life to the extent where society bases his horrendous crime off of
his serious detachment from society. According to psychologist DeWall, "exclusion causes
emotional insensitivity"(DeWall 2006). This relates to Meursault because his longing independence
from society could be the cause for his apathetic actions towards other people which heavily affects
society. In the book Lord of The Flies, a crowd of young boys are left on an island due to their plane
crashing. This separates them from society and challenges them to make decisions and fight for
survival. This creates mayhem because they are still really young to make judgements in terms with
other people's lives. Isolation affects the boys mentally which causes them to act irrationally. This is
seen when they chant "Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!"(Golding 104). This is
important because it shows how isolation

Fight Club Consumerism Analysis
David Fincher's Fight Club is praised by fans and critics alike as one of the most impactful
representation of society in film. The film follows Jack, the narrator and main character, as he teams
up with a newfound acquaintance named Tyler Durden to form an underground fight club for men
who are bored of their mundane lives(Fincher 1999). As Durden becomes more of a dominant
personality, Fight Club evolves to Project Mayhem, multi–celled secret society of oppressed gray–
collar workers whose purpose is to battle the modern culture of consumerism(Fincher 1999). The
movie is often discussed by people due to its representation of the modern man and consumeristic
society. In Fight Club, the modern man is described as a white–collar slave who ... Show more

This causes a sense of powerlessness and a lack of sense of accomplishments as the workers are
fulfilling goals of others and not for themselves. "The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not speak
about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you–do–not–speak–about–Fight–Club!"
(Fincher 1999). This rule is used as unity for the group of men involved to create their own
counterculture. Counterculture is defined cultural patterns that strongly oppose those widely
accepted within a society(Macionis,2002:49). As Fight Club progresses and the relationships of the
men grows, the group evolves to a Project Mayhem, a rebellious group to fight consumeristic
culture through terroristic actions, such as public bombing(Fincher 1999). The group they created
helps these men cope with the role strain they have experience as grey–collar workers. Through
Violence, both with fist and weapons, The people in project Mayhem causes chaos in white–collar
society. This common mission finally gives the members the meaning in their lives they craved so
much. "We are all part of the same compost heap," Tyler Durden announces over the loudspeaker to
his fellow project mayhem members(Fincher 1999). This statement by Durden represents the
foundation of an In–group" We are all in this together". In–Group is defined as a social group

To get a full understanding of the movie you have to watch it more than once because the way that it

the end, going by simply narrator, according to the ending credits. Edward Norton was perfectly cast
in this role. About halfway through the movie, narrator finds books referring to the anatomy of a

the movie Fight Club.
"People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden..." narrator (Edward Norton) begins the movie

He started to mutilate himself more, gushing blood all over himself and the crowd. Per also started

be nearly empty because of the nature of the show (FlabberghastedSonOfSatan 1). Dead later tried
to mutilate himself with his friends around, whom had to subdue him and patch his wounds often so
he didn't kill himself from blood loss. All of his friends became concerned about him and disliked
his constant suicidal tendencies. All of his friends besides one Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth.
Aarseth became fascinated with Per's actions. He even started to encourage him to kill himself. It is
still unknown whether he did it out of pure evil or to make terrible jokes (Casserole 1). "By 1991,
Dead, Euronymous and Hellhammer were living in a house in the woods near Kråkstad, which was

there was tension between Dead and Euronymous. They fought constantly. One case included Dead

The Pros And Cons Of Marijuana Mayhem
Marijuana Mayhem In some countries, marijuana is legal and even considered as a safe drug.
Americans have debated over the legalization of marijuana in many states and the outcome was
scattered. It resulted in some states legalizing it, some not, and some only making it legal for
medical reasons. Marijuana has become a nationwide issue because it causes controversy over it
being helpful or harmful. Marijuana is viewed by some as a banned drug that leads to worse drugs
making marijuana seem harmful. Due to modern studies, and actual usage of medical marijuana, the
opposing views on marijuana has been shaken. Marijuana can also be viewed as a healthy drug used
to relieve the pain of ill patients. The issue is no longer a simple argument of marijuana not being
healthy because it is a gateway drug. Not everyone who is involved with marijuana goes on to take
other drugs. Modern studies show that the longer a person uses marijuana, the more prone they are
to withdrawals. Medicine such as pain killers is also known to cause withdrawals, however,
hospitals continue to provide it for their patients. Making medicinal marijuana legal can prove
beneficial to not only cancer patients, but the economy as a whole if enforced properly. Marijuana
can be viewed in opposing ways, healthy or harmful, that lead into differing answers for it to be
legalized or not. Brad Miner, author of "How sweet is Mary Jane? – argument against legalizing
marijuana", wrote that he was skeptical about people

The Role Of Mayhem In Egypt

  • 1. The Role Of Mayhem In Egypt Mayhem in Egypt! The events that took place before tonight are from my own observation. I, the first born of Pharaoh, give you all the information I can concerning the nine plagues that took place in Egypt, because my father would not let the Israelites go. I was talking with my father when two strange men came into the palace. The one man claimed himself to be Moses, and my father's eyes darkened with anger. My father told me to leave but I was curious to see what might take place, so I hid behind the nearest pillar and listened. The man rambled on about God wanting my father to let our slaves, the Israelites, go or bad things would happen. God? Who is God? Neither my father nor I knew. I laughed a little because of the nonsense that this "Moses" was speaking. If our gods have never talked back to us, then why does he think that the Israelite's God would speak to him? I left because I lost interest in the whole matter, and because I thought father would catch me standing there at some point. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moses came back as well as his friend and attempted the same thing they tried to do yesterday. I did not understand why, and then it got a little bit more interesting. During their next conversation, my father decided to challenge them to see if their God was real by showing him a miracle from God. Moses accepted, and told his friend to throw his rod on the floor, and when he did, it turned into a snake. This was no surprise to me for my father's Magicians could do that too, and they showed him, but the man's snake devoured all of the other snakes! My father was angry, and he sent them away with the same answer he gave them last time, no. I walked out but this time I was more impressed with Moses, but I still did not believe that this was a miracle from the so–called ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Project Mayhem: The Destruction Of Western Civilization Near the end of Fight Club, Tyler and the narrator form a group called Project Mayhem, a group of highly trained, well disciplined men that are hell bent on the destruction of Western Civilization. A real life Project Mayhem does not need to be a symbolic grand show of force. It does not take such talent and dedication to destroy millions, if not billions of American infrastructure. A team of half a dozen men with no military or private training could easily disrupt the lives of everyday Americans with a little bit of coordination. To start, all that one would need to do to destroy a line of fiber optic cable would be to dig it up and bend it until it cracks. That would destroy about a mile and a half of cable. Then, the power company would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Fight Club Capitalism Fight Club is a narrative for life showing the purpose of shaping individual identity through society, capitalism, and the impact of consumer culture. Fight Club takes what defines you, your house, job, family, and social relations and takes it all away in hopes to find your true self. Your real true self– being a better version of what you were before, one that doesn't follow the social values, the influence of capitalism, and instead literally fights for something different, something to feel and be real. Fight Club takes you from buying fancy furniture, to realising what really matters in your life and what's important. The book does this through fight clubs and project mayhem to make you realise that you're not truly happy, and "Maybe self–improvement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fight Club wasn't about how you defined yourself, your job, your house, how much money you had, your social life, or any other reason. Fight Club is literally fighting for something real, putting everything about you aside to focus on one central goal. "Two men to a fight, one fight at a time, no shoes, no shirts, fights go on as long as they have to... if this is your first night at fight club, you have to fight" (50). Fight club was a way for everyone regardless if you were a doctor, lawyer, cashier, or business man to escape your troubles in life, your worries, and do something real. Fight club has real consequences, and it is a way to offer an escape from who you think you are to learn who you really are. During Fight Club, you have a new persona, and it makes you realize that you are unhappy with your life, and gives you a way to change it. Fight Club does this by abandoning all social aspects, creating guided rules, and giving people a chance to start living. However, Fight Club never solves any issues or problems, it just gives people a way to deal with the stress of their regular life. Ever week men got to fight, using their frustrations to kick the living hell out of each other. It is almost like Fight Club was an out–of–body experience for the participants, and turning them into a whole other person for the entirety of the fight. Fight Club was the start to finding out who you really were, it was a recruitment for the men willing to escape the consumer culture, and strike back to those who held you down. Fight Clubs were appearing all across the United States, they were becoming a social movement that would further evolve into Project Mayhem (a group of elite people willing to abandon normal social life to stick it to the system by any means ... Psychological disorders are widely represented in films, as well as in other media texts such as novels, television shows, etc. One film that portrays more than one example of a psychological disorder is Fight Club, a Twentieth Century Fox movie released with an R rating in 1999. Directed by David Fincher; and produced by Art Linson, Cean Chaffin, and Ross Grayson Bell, the movie mainly introduces Dissociative Identity Disorders (also known as Multiple Personality Disorders), but also hints at insomnia and depression. The movie is adapted from the book Fight Club written by Chuck Palahniuk. Fox marketed the movie using a "myriad of merchandise, including posters, the soundtrack, and even email addresses (yourname@fightclub.com)" (CNN). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tyler gives the impression that he lives life to the fullest, and appears to be the complete opposite of Narrator/Jack. When Narrator/Jack returns home after his business trip, he stands below his condo, which he "loved" and watches as it and all of his beloved material possessions, which made him feel complete burns away. Narrator/Jack thought that he needed all of his expensive material objects to feel complete; because where others obtained these objects for necessity he used them to measure his self–worth. "Sociologists call the process of actively creating meaning in this way the ‘social construction of reality'. This means that, while reality exists, we must negotiate the meaning of that reality" (Croteau & Hoynes 7). Left with no place to go, Narrator/Jack first calls Marla but quickly changes his mind at the last moment and contacts Tyler instead. They go out and have some drinks after which Tyler tells Jack that he can stay with him. After agreeing to move in together, in return Tyler asks Jack to hit him as hard as he can. Hesitantly, Narrator/Jack agrees and they end up fighting in the parking lot of the bar which gives both of them a bit of release and happiness. Narrator/Jack's reaction upon reaching Tyler's house, lacking normal electricity and looking as though it may collapse at any second, is one of shock and disgust as it is ... • 21. Fight Club Essay Fight Club In the book Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk, the narrator is an employee for a travelling car company, who suffers from insomnia. When he asks his doctor for medication the doctor refuses and advises him to visit a support group to witness what suffering really is. The first group the narrator attends is for testicular cancer victims. He finds an emotional release that relieves his insomnia and becomes addicted to support groups. After a flight home from a business trip, the narrator realizes that his apartment was destroyed by a homemade explosion. He calls Tyler Durden, a man who he met on the flight. This quote was said right before the narrator and Tyler engaged into a fight. This quote was the root of the formation of fight club. This quote also states that the narrator is not independent and lost a form of his power by listening to what Tyler had told him. The narrator had the option of being independent by not hitting Tyler and engaging into a fight, but the power Tyler had over him was overbearing for him to stop. Once the narrator asks Tyler to stay at his home, this is a defining moment of where Tyler has more control of the narrator by letting him into his home. This moment also shows how the narrator is losing power by moving into the house of the man that has control over him. The Formation of Project Mayhem is an aspect of how the narrator is losing control by a political organization created by Tyler. Project Mayhem is a secret organization that was formed by the Fight Club, and led by Tyler Durden. Project Mayhem was created to fight against rich people who don't care about the white collar working class and it is a war on civilization, consumerism and the world they live in. Project Mayhem was formed by Tyler and the narrator was not told about which had angered him. Tyler had control over the narrator's power because Tyler is gaining control over the narrator by creating groups without the narrator realizing. Another way of which Tyler has power over everyone including the narrator is because he also made the rules and announces ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Consumerism In Tyler Durden's Fight Club One of the main themes in Fight Club is the growing problem of consumerism, and of course how to solve it. It was this problem that propelled Tyler Durden to gradually lay the foundations of Project Mayhem, which would allegedly lead to the demise of consumerism in society. Although most participants of the various Fight Clubs seemed to believe that they were solving the problem with Project Mayhem, this was evidently not the case. Project Mayhem eventually became what it was created to destroy. The project aimed to collapse civilisation and set man free from the consumerist world; a world which had fallen into a cycle of obliviousness to supposed oppression from the elite upper class. Tyler Durden was not blind to this oppression. It was his mission disrupt order in any, and all ways possible. Whether it be splicing pornography into movies or ruining someone's soup at a restaurant, he refused to conform to the order of society. This is where Project Mayhem was rooted, and where it would inevitably grow to become its antithesis. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act is one of many in a series of vandalism across the unnamed city, and it was seemingly insignificant. What is more significant in this circumstance, is rather the order behind the chaos. The narrator asks, "Was it the Mischief Committee or the Arson Committee?" (Page 119) Whenever a committee is mentioned, one would assume that a sense of order or organisation would be involved, and order is the proposed enemy of Project Mayhem, hence the "Mayhem" in its name. To reinforce the idea of order within the project, the narrator suggests that it may have been a "homework assignment," (Page 119). Two of the major companies today are Allstate and State Farm. In the Allstate commercial, a man portrays "Mayhem" to show drivers the risks they experience while driving on the road. The man says he is modeling a blind spot and that not many people see what hides in them, resulting in an accident. In the State Farm commercial, two situations are shown, one of which was a teenage girl getting her first car, and the other a grown man getting his car broken into. This commercial shows that State Farm is there through good and bad times. To achieve their purposes, both of these brands apply pathos, ethos, and logos to their commercials. Both of these commercials incorporate the exaggeration of a particular situation to ignite humor and laughter among the audience. In the Allstate commercial, a man is holding onto the side of a car to portray the driver's blind spot, telling the driver that the coast is clear. Suddenly, a truck comes out of nowhere, causing an accident. This is humorous because the sight of the man hanging on the side of the vehicle, acting as the blind spot, provides an exaggeration that causes the audience to laugh (Blind Spot Commercial | Allstate Mayhem Internet). This shows the danger of driving in order to catch the audience's attention. In the State Farm commercial, by providing two different situations with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Fight Club By Chuck Palahniuk Today's society is essentially powered by consumerism, capitalism, and the media; supplying people's thoughts, behaviors, feelings, and lives. The psychological novel, Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk, uses a man's need for a male role of identity to fit in into society as a way of showing how consumerism can be threatening a man's identity and masculinity. Palahniuk explores the life of a man who in an attempt to break free of a capitalist society forms a clandestine "fight club" as a form of rebellion towards society. Palahniuk illustrates in, Fight Club, a character that, challenged by today's consumerism culture, struggles to find his true self–identity and express his masculinity. Since, the beginning of the novel we see the protagonist, a nameless narrator, as a man suffering from an identity and masculinity crisis. The narrator recounts in chapter two of Fight Club how attending support groups for terminal illness such as brain parasites, tuberculosis, and testicular cancer, helped his insomnia. The first time he realized it was when he allowed himself to cry in a testicular cancer group, along with Bob, a man who had his testicles removed and produced "bitch tits" as a result of hormone therapy. Throughout the novel Bob also known as Robert Paulson, once a bodybuilder and steroid abuser, served as a physical manifestation of a masculinity crisis and provided a feminine aspect that the main character feared of. • 37. Movie Analysis : Fight Club Fight Club, a critically acclaimed film debuted in 1999, is concentrated around the central belief of unifying individuals that are not socially accepted by society. It is when a depressed man, "the narrator" who faces insomnia and has a mental disorder that falls along the lines of multiple personality disorder, meets a soap salesman who shares the same living quarters and become bored with everyday, materialistic life they form an underground club with strict rules which enable them to fight other men. Fight Club is a secret group that is developed with the purpose of unifying individuals that drift away from material possessions and give up face for the betterment of the group. Tyler Durden lays down the ground rules every week that indicates how things are to be done and guide each member's behavior before the fighting begins. The rules include: first and foremost, you do not talk about fight club, you do not talk about fight club, if someone yells stop, goes limp, or taps out, the fight is over, there should only be two guys to a fight, only one fight at a time, no shirts and no shoes are to be worn, fights will go on as long as they have to, and if it is your first night of fight club you have to fight. The mandated structures are put in place to restrict certain behavior but also to enable the group to understand how they are expected to behave and interact with one another. Typically the theory of socialization can be seen in any group large or small. Within (Tyler Durden 's) group of Fight Club one can see how many decisions and group actions play out by looking at the theory. As mentioned above, the theory has so many different agents and structures that play such major key roles in the theory that it is hard to choose just one element or aspect of the theory to study. The theory originally coined by a man named Anthony Giddens had some backlash within the recent years due to claims that the theory cannot help predict actions and expectations taken on by an individual. • 41. Fight Club Analysis Do you find yourself lost, searching for self–worth in modern Society? The Narrator in Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club struggles with insomnia due to his repetitive nine to five office–job. He longs to feel alive, thinking that purchasing materialistic objects and conforming to what modern society considers the norm will fill his void. Tyler Durden, The Narrators alter ego states, "the first step to eternal life is you have to die" (Palahniuk 11). His extreme statement represents that one must let go and forget everything they have come to know in order to truly be free from the pressures society places on them. The conflict in Fight Club is the internal battle to find purpose and one's role in modern day America. The Narrator's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His sense of helplessness allows him to realize that at some point everyone will die and soon be forgotten. This idea supports the fact that The Narrator is searching for purpose and is unhappy with his life up to this point. The Narrator is beginning to believe in the thought that intimate experiences have more internal satisfaction than the materialistic objects that occupy his home. During what The Narrator calls dreams, the readers get introduced to his alter ego, Tyler Durden. Tyler is everything The Narrator desires to be. He is flamboyant and carefree. The Narrator has a jealous obsession with Tyler, unknown to his conscious mind, that Tyler and himself are the same person. The sex driven relationship Tyler has with Martha Singer proves this thought correct. Martha is infatuated with Tyler. The Narrator cannot stand that Martha gets more attention from Tyler than he does. The Narrator is still unaware to the fact that Tyler is actually himself and they share the same woman. The story often portrays Tyler as some sort of holy like symbol. In Fight Club Tyler often recites its rules, "The first rule about fight club is you don't talk about fight club" (Palahniuk 48). The members of Fight Club will then recite the rules back as if Tyler is a preacher or a god leading a congregation. • 45. Fight Club Melissa Gonzales Prof. O'Connell English 215 09, December 2013 Fight Club Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk uses violence for most of recorded history, violence has played a major role in our lives; for example, through country conflicts to world wars, violence seems to be the tool to our defense. Even in our daily lives, when encountered a conflict, we humans want to make it disappear as quick as possible. We do this by using violence unconsciously, whether it is verbally or physically. To the same effect, in his novel Fight Club, Palahniuk reveals violence to be an inescapable cycle. He does this effectively by using violence in the lives of the characters; acting as a form of escape, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tyler uses violence as a tool for control frequently, specifically in Project Mayhem. In Project Mayhem, the members, referred to as spacemonkeys, feel violence is necessary in achieving their goals of anarchy. The actions begin with simple destructive attacks on specific individuals or things. For example, whenever an authority stands between the spacemonkeys and their missions, they simply castrate the opposition. In another example, spacemonkeys threaten to murder an individual at gunpoint if they do not pursue their true aspirations in life. However, small petty acts of violence escalade into much more violent, terrorist–like attacks. In fact, Tyler wants to literally destroy every by–product of the consumer culture; he states, "We wanted to blast the world free of history. You'll hunt elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center, and dig clams next to the skeleton of the Space Needle leaning at a forty–five degree angle" (116). These visions become realities; the novel culminates in Project Mayhem attempting, although unsuccessfully, to explode world's tallest building. Both the Narrator and Tyler use violence as a form of escape. Beginning with the Narrator casually stating, "I just don't want to die without a few scars" (49), and fight club evolves ... • 49. Irony In Fight Club And Project Mayhem The creators chose to suggest that the members of Fight Club and Project Mayhem are not really free nonconformists. Lynn M Ta from the Journal of American Culture states, The irony is that Fight Club and later Project Mayhem, reproduces the same effects of capitalism by creating the illusion of freedom through the demands of self–regulation and self–punishment. It is upon this contradiction that Fincher's dark comedy hinges, for the film's satirical edge relies on the realization that these individuals seek relief from an oppressive capitalistic order through means that are equally conforming and repressive (265). • 53. Feminism And Capitalism In Fight Club By David Fincher According to Marx, all of human history has been the history of class struggle. In capitalist societies, antagonism unfolds between the owners of the means of production and the workers. Symptomatic of the worker's struggle is the effects of exploitation which cause all parts of human life, including one's life as whole, to become mere commodities to be bought and sold. It is a Marxist belief that the oppression and dissatisfaction of the working class will inevitably lead to a revolt in which the goal is to regain equality. Project Mayhem in David Fincher's Fight Club can be viewed as a failed Marxist working–class revolt due to the fact that in attempting to reinforce equality for all, it ends up objectifying its members. "The worker becomes all the poorer the more wealth he produces, the more his production increases in power and range. The worker becomes an ever cheaper commodity the more commodities he creates. With the increasing value of the world of things proceeds in direct proportion the devaluation of the world of men." Integral to understanding the Marxist antipathy for capitalism is to understand the role of private property in the exploitation of working class members. Historically, private ownership did not begin with capitalism. Prior to capitalism, exploitation stemming from private ownership was present in slave societies and in feudal societies. • 65. A Rhetorical Analysis Of Insurance Commercial In commercials for insurance agencies I have noticed a reoccurring theme. They will show you the very thing you would want protection from. They use fear to lure you into buying insurance from their agency. This happens in Allstate's line of "mayhem like me" commercials. First, you will see a grown man driving a pink SUV. The man introduces himself as a teenage girl and proceeds to tell you why he is distracted, "My bff Becky texted and said she kissed Johnny." A person who does not own a car might get a kick out of the humor in the commercial but will not bother thinking about the commercial much further. I believe Allstate does a wonderful job with these "mayhem like me" commercials. When you use the same theme for multiple commercials it leaves the audience excited to see what comes next. The Ideology Of Project Mayhem Or Fight Club Interestingly, Pleck in Phillips, 2006, argues that men actually over–conform to proposed masculine traits when they feel they have violated hegemonic masculine ideology and this can manifest into violence (p.407). With reference to this, Clark, 2002, suggests that consumerism has assigned men 'passive' and 'ornamental' roles typically reserved for females, and this again can result in 'violent repercussions' (p.65). This would further qualify the argument that Project Mayhem's purpose is to destroy consumerism as Tyler, and the narrator believes it will result in a resurgence of 'traditional' masculinity; moreover, Tyler uses the simile of firing a gun to be 'like your jism' (p.122) to emphasise the connotations of masculinity related to destruction. ... From one perspective, it could be argued that this ultimately gives Tyler/the narrator power over a consumerist corporation. On the other hand, it could be argued that this actually feminizes Tyler/the narrator by 'enjoying' being physically hurt by another male. Masculinity In David Fincher's Fight Club On the surface, director David Fincher's 1999 film Fight Club, based on the novel by the same name, is a journey into underground fighting and ultra–macho male bonding. It becomes much more than the obvious observations though. In a 2014 Comic con appearance, Fincher states, "'Fight Club' is about moving through a modern disconnected society," Fincher goes on to say, "It's a satire. Many don't get that." (Stedman). The film chronicles the depressed, sleep deprived, and obsessive life of the main character, who remains nameless throughout the film. The main character, played by Edward Norton, narrates the film. People desire freedom; the men in Fight Club are no different. They seek to be free from boring jobs and the everyday tasks that hold them captive. They desire to be a part of Project Mayhem as an escape, a way out, but they continue to just be small cogs for a larger vision. In describing the differences between the fight club and Project Mayhem, Olivia Burgess says," Though both fight club and Project Mayhem propose strategies for change, fight club is an open–ended community promoting difference, while Project Mayhem is a goal–driven regime enforcing obedience and stasis." (Burgess). One must ask, have they found freedom, or have they just become slaves to a different cause? The men seem to be filled with a renewed purpose in life. But is this any different than before? They're still working menial jobs and doing exactly what they're told to do. The only difference? Instead of working for a paycheck, they're working for Tyler. The late movie critic Roger Ebert said," Of course, "Fight Club" itself does not advocate Durden's philosophy. The Fight Club By Chuck Palahniuk Koby Gordon Mr. Smith Senior English: Fight Club Essay 8 September 2014 Violence as a Coping Method In the novel Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk, what it means to be alive is examined through violent underground boxing rings, featured in cities around the world. The story follows an unnamed narrator, who lives a monotonous yet well off life, and his alter ego, Tyler Durden, a more freethinking and violent character, as he explores himself and the essence of living through participating in a fight club. Growing from the narrator's many years living in a healthy and stable life, in which he struggles to characterize himself as an individual, the alter ego of Tyler Durden embodies the narrator's darkest desires. As the narrator fades away each night, Tyler Durden takes over his body, early on leading men to participate in relatively harmless fight clubs to experience pain and masculinity, to later collaborating with the same men in the much larger and more harmful Project Mayhem, a movement to assert dominance on the world. Following stringent rules in an effort to keep these organizations unknown to the outside world, the men partake in violent activities that give them a rush that keeps them coming back, and a transitory sense of importance that through the escalation of violence, they try to turn more lasting. Ultimately, the method of coping with real life issues through violence that offers an only ephemeral feeling of self–importance is unsuccessful. Fight club is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Summary Of The Rhetoric Of Advertising Hirschberg In "The Rhetoric of Advertising", Hirschberg describes three forms of persuasion associated with Aristotle that advertisers us to attract people. Hirschberg first starts by stating pathos as a form of persuasion that triggers people's emotions. Secondly, Hirschberg describes logos as a form of persuasion that uses reason, evidence, and logic. Lastly, Hirschberg describes ethos as a method of persuasion that is used to show the credibility of the product and company that is advertising. In Hirschberg's "The Rhetoric of Advertising", advertisers use pathos to sadden and frighten people in order to sell a product. Advertisers use pathos in order to sadden people into purchasing the product the company is selling. In order for the advertisement to achieve a sentimental appeal to the audience, most ads take the viewer into a past time of nostalgia. As mentioned in Hirschberg's "The Rhetoric of Advertising", "Grandmotherly figures wearing aprons and holding products that are advertised as being "like Grandma used to make" offer the consumer an imaginary past, a family tradition, or a simpler time looked back to with warmth and sentimentality" (270). Solipsism In The Fight Club From the beginning of the Fight Club, Tyler's apparent purpose, in the forming of Fight Club and Project Mayhem, was to bring the narrator to rock bottom in order to take him out of the unsatisfying everydayness of his life. The narrator develops a form of solipsistic therapy that allows his own mind to find a way to heal himself. In this way, he learns that in order to start over in life he needs let go of all his physical possessions and begin again with nothing. Once he hits rock bottom, there would be nowhere left to go but up. In addition, he initiates Project Mayhem in an attempt to create as much chaos as possible in order to spread his therapy further. This type of therapeutic strategy is similar to the methodology of crossfit training, which focus on specific areas of weakness in training. This therapy employs a form of personal solipsism in order to confront the narrator's issues, because Tyler knew that only he was able to control and understand his own conscience. The first step towards Tyler's downward spiral in his life, which also led him to start joining therapy groups, was when the narrator was denied any medication for his insomnia by a doctor. After the doctor refused to acknowledge his suffering, Tyler realized that he would find no solace in asking for help, and he reacted to this by relying on personal solipsism to help himself. Not to say that the film does not represent white bourgeoisie hyper–masculinity but to look at the parts of the film that doesn't feed into this train of thought. I want to expand the lens past Norton's character, which I will call Jack for simplicity, and to Brad Pitt's character, Tyler Durden's Project Mayhem and the underlining values that Durden preaches. I argue that Project Mayhem manages to unite the proletariat and form the beginnings of what appears to be a Marxian revolution. This conclusion may seem an odd one due to the white–collar, bourgeois job that Jack holds in the beginning of the movie. The bourgeoisie are the owners of capital by definition1 and considered to be the middle class workers of our society. However, Jack's job allows for a depiction of how capitalism turns humans into commodities. Jack is a recall coordinator for a major car company. The film follows Jack, the narrator and main character, as he teams up with a newfound acquaintance named Tyler Durden to form an underground fight club for men who are bored of their mundane lives(Fincher 1999). Fox marketed the movie using a "myriad of merchandise, including posters, the soundtrack, and even email addresses (yourname@fightclub.com)" (CNN). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To get a full understanding of the movie you have to watch it more than once because the way that it presents itself is like a mental puzzle for the viewer. The main character remains nameless until near the end, going by simply narrator, according to the ending credits. Edward Norton was perfectly cast in this role. About halfway through the movie, narrator finds books referring to the anatomy of a man named Jack, at which time he starts referring to himself as Jack in the third person (e.g. " I am Jacks broken heart..."). My intent is to analyze the depiction of psychological disorders portrayed in the movie Fight Club. "People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden..." narrator (Edward Norton) begins the movie with a narration mentioning a theater of mass destruction and some group called project mayhem that has set bombs around the city to detonate and destroy. Narrator makes a foreshadowing remark stating "I know this because Tyler knows this" which leads the audience to believe that maybe they are connected in a way that we don't yet understand. Narrator/Jack then leads us into the movie by stating that he realizes all of what is happening has something to do with a girl named Marla Singer. We see Narrator/Jack at a support group for men with testicular cancer; he starts attending support group meetings after seeing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 133. Per Ohlin Research Paper Per "Dead" Ohlin The black metal genre has changed a lot throughout the years because of many influential musicians in the scene. One of the bands to change the scene entirely was Mayhem. One of Mayhem's particular vocalists, Per Ohlin, did even more for the genre. Per "Dead" Ohlin started as a very reserved young man but he later grew up to be one of the most morbid and influential black metal musicians in the music industry, changing the genre entirely. Per Ohlin was born in Västerhaninge, Sweden on January 16, 1969 (Patterson 143). He suffered from several medical problems in his early years. By the age of 3, he suffered from sleep apnea, which caused him to be awake all too often. Later on, at the age of 10, he had a near death experience. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He started to mutilate himself more, gushing blood all over himself and the crowd. Per also started to get somewhat violent with the crowd in attempts to cleanse the room of 'posers'. He started to throw around the pig heads during the concerts. A concert that began full of people would eventually be nearly empty because of the nature of the show (FlabberghastedSonOfSatan 1). Dead later tried to mutilate himself with his friends around, whom had to subdue him and patch his wounds often so he didn't kill himself from blood loss. All of his friends became concerned about him and disliked his constant suicidal tendencies. All of his friends besides one Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth. Aarseth became fascinated with Per's actions. He even started to encourage him to kill himself. It is still unknown whether he did it out of pure evil or to make terrible jokes (Casserole 1). "By 1991, Dead, Euronymous and Hellhammer were living in a house in the woods near Kråkstad, which was used as a place for the band to rehearse. According to Hellhammer, Dead spent much of his time writing letters and drawing." (FlabberghastedSonOfSatan 1). It ended up becoming obvious that there was tension between Dead and Euronymous. They fought constantly. One case included Dead sleeping outside in the cold because he disliked Euronymous' synth music that he was playing. Euronymous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the night of the 8th of October 2010, one of those flights observed two vessels sailing toward each other from a distance of about 2 nautical miles. The next morning, another surveillance flight relocated the two vessels, about a quarter of a nautical mile apart, and not far from where they had first been observed. ... • 149. The Pros And Cons Of Marijuana Mayhem Marijuana Mayhem In some countries, marijuana is legal and even considered as a safe drug. Americans have debated over the legalization of marijuana in many states and the outcome was scattered. It resulted in some states legalizing it, some not, and some only making it legal for medical reasons. Marijuana has become a nationwide issue because it causes controversy over it being helpful or harmful. Marijuana is viewed by some as a banned drug that leads to worse drugs making marijuana seem harmful. Due to modern studies, and actual usage of medical marijuana, the opposing views on marijuana has been shaken. Marijuana can also be viewed as a healthy drug used to relieve the pain of ill patients. The issue is no longer a simple argument of marijuana not being healthy because it is a gateway drug. Not everyone who is involved with marijuana goes on to take other drugs. Modern studies show that the longer a person uses marijuana, the more prone they are to withdrawals. Medicine such as pain killers is also known to cause withdrawals, however, hospitals continue to provide it for their patients. Making medicinal marijuana legal can prove beneficial to not only cancer patients, but the economy as a whole if enforced properly. Marijuana can be viewed in opposing ways, healthy or harmful, that lead into differing answers for it to be legalized or not. Brad Miner, author of "How sweet is Mary Jane? – argument against legalizing marijuana", wrote that he was skeptical about people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
