This document lists and describes various reference tools on the internet that can be used for educational purposes. It discusses wikipedia as a collaborative online encyclopedia, educational websites and pages containing various types of information, Google Scholar for searching scholarly literature, online newspapers and ebooks, glossaries and online dictionaries containing definitions and translations, and web browsers for accessing these online resources.

2. Encyclopedia
Wikipedia
• A web application that allows collaborative modification,
extension, or deletion of its content and structure.
• it is a type of content management system, that differs from
blogs.
• has no define owners or leaders. anyone can post, write or edit.

3. Pages / Websites
• A collection of web pages (documents that are accessed through the
Internet)
• Contain any type of information (text, color, graphics, animation,
sound) for educational purposes.
• e.g. Coursera, SlideShare, IIUM Library portal, E-Learning, iTaleem,
Educational YouTubes, blogs/sites (Edublogs, online quizzes,
exercises, notes, forums).

4. Google Scholar
• A simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature.
• Can search across disciplines and sources (journals,
bibliography, articles, theses, books, abstracts, court opinions,
from academic publishers, professional societies, online
repositories, universities, etc.)

5. Online Resources
Newspaper
• Online version of a newspaper - a stand-alone publication and online version of a printed
periodical.
• E.g. NST Online, The Star online, Berita Harian online, Ted Talks(videos and news), BBC
News.
Ebook
• An electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a computer or a specifically
designed handheld device.

6. Glossary / Online Dictionary
• An alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect,
with explanations; a brief dictionary.
• An online dictionary is a dictionary that is accessible via the Internet and a
downloadable application.
• Consist almost all languages available and millions of translations.
• E.g. Collins American Dictionary, Thesaurus, Urban Dictionary, The
Oxford, Cambridge online, Google translator.

7. Web Browsers
• A software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information
resources worldwide.
• An information resource that is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier
(URI/URL) ,a web page, image, video or other piece of content.
• E.g. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Yahoo, Internet Explorer, etc.
