The Digital Scholarship Lab at the J. Willard Marriott Library of the University of Utah provides resources and assistance for faculty and students to create digital scholarship. It has audio and video studios, geospatial technology, and supports various projects involving multimedia, capstone projects, open access publishing, digital libraries, qualitative analysis, and data analysis. Staff members describe services for audio recording, video production, maps and spatial analysis, digitizing collections, and more. The lab collaborates across disciplines to enable digital research, teaching, and learning.

Geospatial Technology in the
Digital Scholarship Lab
12. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
What is Geospatial (GIS) Technology?
Software used in visualization and analysis of geographic
data (information identified by geographic locations or
features on the Earth – multiple types including points,
lines, polygons and rasters
Used on a daily basis (GPS, GIS, remote sensing)
Software programs utilized in the Digital Scholarship Lab
ArcGIS, Google Earth, Google Maps, ArcGIS Online,
Flash-based mapping software
13. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
How is Geospatial Technology being
used in projects at the library?
Develop and interact with library collections
Incorporate multiple source materials and formats into one
easily understandable interactive platform
Understand and visualize print materials for examining
history, development and impacts taking place over time

Multi-Media Projects
Online projects may need
specialized technical help,
special expertise or even
regular library reference
help.
The DSL assisted this
project by hosting
workshops on digital
storytelling and
demographic information.
18. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Capstone Projects
An Honors Think Tank produced
this analysis of water at the
University of Utah which was
published digitally and is
available in the USpace
Institutional Repository.
19. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Capstone Projects
Other programs like the
undergraduate “Block U”
produce capstone projects
that include digital
elements.
Students from the
sustainability Block U
started a nonprofit to
“daylight” creeks in the
Jordan River Watershed.
An embedded librarian
worked with the Block U
Students
20. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Multi-Media Publication
Creative writers
may be asked for a
recording of a short
story or poem.
The DSL can help
make a high quality
recording.
21. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Open-Access Publication
The Marriott Library
supports Open Journal
System software to
publish open access
journals.
The DSL has been
working with the
Sustainability Resource
Center to help launch a
new journal for student
research.
22. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Multi-Media Digital Libraries
An online exhibit is a way
to highlight multi-medial
collections.
The Utah Urban Pioneers
project is a collection of
oral history interviews, a
concert tape and other
artifacts collected by
folklorist Polly Stewart.

Multi-Media Digital Libraries
Early graphics computers had no
printers. A photographer took
pictures of the screen and glued
them into technical reports.
Photocopy and microform reports
often have poor quality images.
Utah State Historical Records
Advisory Board provided a grant to
digitize and preserve photos.
We recently received another grant
from Chevron to continue work
digitizing these reports
24. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Qualitative Analysis
The DSL supports Nvivo
and Atlas.ti for qualitative
analysis.
25. J. Willard Marriott Library, University of Utah
Data Analysis & Electronic Notebooks
The DSL has a
librarian working with
data curation and
electronic lab
notebooks.
