Compared to federated searching, provides faster response, better duplicate detection, and improved accuracy
Introduce the switch from Voyager to WMS and reasons whyKey aspects of a next generation catalog – relevancy, faceted searching, tagging, social media
Mention the discuss we had at LMU about Discovery toolsPros and consCons: we want our students to learn complex searching techniques and use their definitive databases not just keyword searchPros: we have a new generation of students who are comfortable with google like searching. Give them what they want and they will use the catalog more for their research.
The beauty of Discovery tools is that you don’t need a next generation catalog to combine the options like relevancy searching, tagging, social media options, and faster, more accurate response time.It was the right time for OCLC WMS at Lincoln Memorial University, but it’s a tough decision requiring a lot of huge changes for an institution. I think taking the conservative approach to next generation catalogs is very appropriate especially at a larger university and especially if your current catalog is doing what you want. Discovery tools simply add to that functionality. For students it provides opportunities, it opens doors. And it makes your catalog more attractive to them. I always tell librarians at LMU that we are to teach students that they are discovering more options with the new catalog but they should still refer to the database list and their definitive databases for their discipline. Our goal being that a student’s immediate thought when starting research is to go to the catalog first and the internet last. Making the catalog more user friendly promotes this response.
Students must find the catalog attractive. We want them to search the catalog first. We want fast and accurate searching in order to make that happen. Most importantly we want students to find what they’re looking for and more. We want them to find that article in a database they weren’t aware of. We want them to find everything they need.
