Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure Summary
I have read the Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure by Franklin W. Dixon. The Hardy Boys were
delivering paper for their dad on their motorcycles. a blue car went flying by and then it went flying
by again. They climbed the hill next to them and delivered the papers. They were going to Chets
house to say hi, and they saw the blue car had crashed into a ditch there was no one in the car. They
went down Chets driveway and saw that Chet was sad; the man had stolen Chets yellow car. Chet
and the Hardy Boys went around town asking if anyone say a yellow car go bye. Their friend Callie
who had a cake in her hand said Chets yellow car was going so fast that it scared her and she
dropped the cake. The Hardy Boys went to the police station to see if the Chief knew anything.
Once they got there, they saw that their rival detective, Detective Smuff was there with a man that
worked at a ticket both. They were reporting a man in Chets yellow car had attempted to rob the
ticket booth. The next day the boys were on the case and they had called in a couple of their friends
to help. They all split up to look for clues and at the end they would meet at the park. At the park
they ate and took a nap once they woke up they looked in the last place it could have been in, in.
they looked in the woods near the park where there was an old dump they split up and looked. They
found footsteps in the mud that led to small path in the woods and they walked along the path. Chets
car was at the end of the path. All of them piled in the car and drove along the highway calling out
that they have found the car. They saw Smuff and Bragged but he didn't care there was a new case
the tower has been robbed. The Hardy boys were on the hunt for clues. They went to the tower with
their dad where Mr. Applegate accused Mr. Robinson of the robbery because he was the only one
who has ever seen the safe open. That was the Hardy boys friends dad. They wanted to solve the
mystery so Mr. Robinson could get a job and they could go to school with their friend. They
suspected that the man who stole Chets car was the one who did it but they had no evidence. They
gave their dad the wig, and he looked inside and saw a tag with a name on it. They went to New
York to find

Treasure Island By Robert Louis Stevenson The main character in the story is Jim Hawkins. He is a
young boy who looks for adventure. He and a few experienced men search for Ben Gunn, and want
to have him enlist in their cause. They steal the Hispanolia (a ship) and return it to the captain to
which it rightfully belongs. Ben is a member of Flint's original crew. He was forced to live on the
island for three years and survive on his own. He found Flint's treasure, and then buried it. Trying to

He has only one leg and usually has his parrot, Captain Flint, who always says " Pieces of Eight,
Pieces of Eight." Silver shows paternal liking and kindness for Jim. Other times Silver shows
cruelness and extreme brutality in executing other sailors. The main idea of the story is finding the
treasure. Ben Gunn has lived on the island for three years, and knows where the treasure lies. Before
the pirates find Jim and his mother, Jim grabs a key and an oilskin packet from the old sea chest.
Jim's father dies, and he and his mother flee to the nearby town and ask them to help them but they
refuse to. They find a nearby bridge to hide under, and escape from the pirates. Finally, the people
from the town decide to come to Jim and his mothers rescue. Later in the book, Jim hides in an
apple barrel and overhears Silver and other crewmates about taking the ship once they have the
treasure on the ship. When land was sighted a conflict went on between Silver and another group of
pirates. Jim escapes while the fight is going on. He finds Ben Gunn and they become friends. Jim
goes with Silver on the hunt for the treasure. They discover that the treasure is missing, and they fire
into the surrounding area. The treasure was stowed in the Hispanolia's lower deck. Silver steals a
sack of coins and escapes. There were many examples of literary terms used in this novel, but the
main one was flashback. Jim, the whole time he's writing the story, is

they had in their life. The Shack explains how Mackenzie Allen Philips loses faith in God as his

Treasure Planet Movie Analysis
Many films that are created have multiple thematic driving forces that are consistent– sometimes
hard to differentiate, this can make a film lose a large amount of its emotional impact... Treasure
Planet uses a unique method of intervening two separate integral thematic forces. Treasure Planet,
directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, is an animated science fiction retelling of the famous
Treasure Island. We accompany a boy named Jim Hawkins on his journey to find Treasure Planet, a
childhood dream that was forced by a fateful encounter with someone bearing a map. A map to the
"Loot of a thousand worlds." Throughout this thrilling adventure, you also learn about Jim's family
situation, his father leaving, and how it affects the way he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For instance: When we are first introduced to Jim in his current age, he is sailing skillfully over
land, with a non–diegetic electric guitar playing in the wake of his sail to accentuate his skillful
movements. The guitar leads into a full blown heroic sounding orchestral piece, halted by a cutscene
where we see Jim being essentially arrested for trespassing. This pairs the electric guitar with Jim–
further establishing his rebellious nature, the opposite of what we would expect with the exposition
of Jim's character being a kind, curious, and slightly impatient child. Whenever an electric guitar is
heard after this scene, it is because Jim is doing something reclass– but substantial. The next time
we learn about Jim and his background– it is to the backing soundtrack of a song written by The
Goo Goo Dolls, an American rock band. With multiple themes consistently at play, if not for the
intervening of spectacularly placed music and directing, it would be confusing to the viewer to
follow all three of the themes. This could become problematic, if you want to frame multiple themes
or plots, you must be able to easily identify them. It's the difference between having a necklace braid
in all grey and having a necklace braid that is color coded– without further inspection, at first
glance, it would be hard to trace one string down a complicated braid. But, with each cord being a
different color, it would be a breeze to identify any singular cord down

Jim Hawkins Quotes In Treasure Island
Jim Hawkins is the main character in Treasure Island. Jim playes many roles including a spy, a cabin
boy, a son, and many others. He is very honest and loyal. For example, when he was held hstage at
the stockade, Dr. Livesey told him to run for the woods and escape, but he wouldn't do it because it
wasn't a honest thing to do. In the beggining of the book, Jim was just a shy boy who helped with
the family inn. Once his father dies, and him and his mother have to escape from pirates, he starts to
gain his bravery and courage. The story continues and he is faced with many challenges. As he
works through thease challenges, he becomes stronger, braver, and more confident. He becomes a
great ali, and hero to Captain Smollett and his men. Long John Silver is a strange character because
at first he seems good, and freindly, when actually he is planning a secret mutiny. Then once his plan
is reaveled, he actes cruel, and unforgiving. When in the end, he turns out to be loyal to captain
Smollett. This makes Silver interesting and unexpected. Silver is a natral leader. He is bold,
outgoing, and always shares his opinion. Even though he is tough and cruel on the outside, I think
he does have a heart. He shows this by caring for Jim, and wanting the best for him even if he
doesn't like showing it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Livesey is a good man, and just wants the best for people. For example he risks his life to see that

because he is very smart, and he is a doctor. He even saves the whole crew by going to find Benn

Compare And Contrast Jim Hawkins And Treasure Island
Finding money in an unexpected place always brings happiness to the finder; whether it is money or
treasure, everyone strives to get it. In the novel, Treasure Island by Robert L. Stevenson, an old sea
caption dies and Jim Hawkins discovers the captain's chest full of valuable items, such as a treasure
map. Upon finding the map, Jim Hawkins goes on an adventure to find the treasure. In another
novel, Kidnapped, also by Robert L. Stevenson, David Balfour has returned to his hometown to
obtain his father's inheritance, however, David's greedy uncle gets him kidnapped. David goes on a
journey to get back his inheritance from his evil uncle. In the novels, the protagonists, Jim Hawkins
and David Balfour, share similarities and differences. They start their journey in different
circumstances, but they are also similar because they share a theme of coming of age. Lastly, both
protagonists deal with men who try to kill them while on journey. ... Show more content on

When David is taken as a prisoner, he meets a new friend, Alan Breck and together, they go through
a journey to help David get his inheritance back. Alan seems to be the young man who does not care
about the outcome, but focuses on what has to be defeated. David observed the way Alan was after
the battle, "his sword was running blood to the hilt, and himself so swelled with triumph and fallen
into so fine an attitude" (Stevenson 59). Because of Alan's company, David seems to have obtained
victory in his first battle. David changes because of his friend, although he sometimes questions
Alan because he is a Jacobite outlaw. Similarly in Jim's case, he meets an elder friend, Long John
Silver who is a pirate and helps Jim along his treasure hunt. Silver and Jim share a special bond of
friendship. As being a pirate, Silver helps Jim in finding the treasure and keeping him safe from

Jim Hawkins In Treasure Island
The main character in Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson is Jim Hawkins. Jim Hawkins is a
young boy who has a lack of money and education. After an unruly guest and then his father die,
Jim embarks on a journey to find an island that is supposedly full of treasure, but this journey will
leave him scarred and changed forever. Jim is not a normal hero; he is simply full of luck to get out
of certain situations. If the book had been from the ringleader of the pirate group on the ship, Long
John Silver, the book would be missing a lot of information about how Jim's group manages to
discover the pirates' plot and thwart their plan. Jim and Silver are similar because they both show
different sides of their personality throughout the book, are persuasive with others, and use cunning
to get out of tough situations. Jim and Silver are different because Jim is on the "good" side and
Silver is on the "evil" side, Silver goes back and forth between playing ... Show more content on

One can see this displayed in Long John Silver's life; he had been a part of Captain Flint's crew, so
he knew what island the treasure had been hidden on. He jumps at the opportunity to go to the island
with part of his original crew and get the treasure without Jim Hawkins and his party knowing who
he is. He ends up murdering those who do not wish to help him, and he tries to kill Jim Hawkins, Dr.
Livesey, Squire Trelawney, and the few men who remained faithful. Silver is so blinded by his
desire for getting the treasure that he does not even think twice about killing people and lying to get
it. He does not think about the consequences of his actions until he is trying to get off the island and
save his neck by saving Jim and Jim's party. In conclusion, one can be blinded to the risks of their
actions and the consequences of such actions when they are blinded by desires of the

which also shows the characters trajectory from innocence to maturity. Certainly, both novels belong
to the sub–genre of bildungsroman which is by definition, a story that depicts a journey from

of parallelism between both journeys as they were indirectly intended to shape their characters in

Treasure Island: the Journey of Jim Hawkins Essay
For the duration of existence, people undergo the physical and mental stages of growing up. During
this phase, people establish through their dealings who they actually are in addition to what they are
worth. For instance, Treasure Island is an adventure tale, but it is also the story of one boy's (Jim
Hawkins) coming of age. On the outset of the voyage, Jim was a timid adolescent, but by the closing
stages, he had matured incredibly. In his novel, Treasure Island, author Robert Louis Stevenson
focuses primarily on the journey of main character Jim Hawkins to exemplify the process of
growing up and proving oneself. Jim Hawkins' transformation from a timid, 13–year old boy to a
young man began when a sailor by the name of Billy Bones ... Show more content on

He thought it was in his best interest to see what Dr. Livesey thought of this matter. After Jim comes
back to Admiral Benbow from staying with Dr. Livesey, he finds that Jim's mother has hired a
young boy to be an apprentice in replace of Jim. Jim finally begins to see that his adventure has
forced him to forget about his previous life at the Inn. He realizes he is leaving his normal life, the
Inn, and his mother (Stevenson 59–60). Jim may have got the feeling he was being replaced, but he
knew that day would come soon enough. "In many respects a typical British boy of his age, Jim has
lead a sheltered life at the Admiral Benbow Inn. The arrival of Billy Bones triggers his desire to
explore the larger world beyond his home. Although he has grown up on the sea coast, Jim knows
little of the seafaring life. His adventures constitute on initiation into adulthood, by means of which
he learns survival skills and moral lessons that far eclipse the typical education of a British
gentleman" (Beetz, Niemeyer 2007). Although only the age of thirteen, Jim was determined to set
sail and wasn't going to let his age define who he was, until tragedy struck. Following the death of
his father, Jim took this opportunity to discover himself on the open sea. It was at this time that Jim
would embark on a journey he would never forget. "I said good–bye to my mother and the cove
where I had lived since I was born, and the dear old Admiral Benbow" (Stevenson 59–60).

Change In Treasure Island
Forces, conflict, and change are very important factors that shape the identity of a character. Jim
Hawkins, the main character of Treasure Island, is immensely transformed throughout many
challenges, and the forces that cause them. The tragedy of death, the exhilaration of war, and the
environment he was in greatly changed who Jim Hawkins was physically and mentally. The many
battles Jim Hawkins was in strengthened him in many ways. When on his way to Treasure Island,
Jim discovered that more than half the crew was plotting to destroy the captain and his loyal crew.

seemed to be a better person in the beginning such as "But one look at the man before was enough. I
had seen the captain, and Black Dog and the blind man, Pew, and I thought I knew what a buccaneer
was like––a very different creature, according to me, from this clean pleasant–tempered landlord"

of the sacks of coin, worth, perhaps, three or four hundred guineas, to help him on his further

Treasure Island, Captain Blood, And We Are Pirates
The passage of a near half millennium has done much in the way of reshaping the familiar genre of
pirate literature of today. One familiar with the courageous and somewhat ridiculous story lines of
Pirates of the Caribbean, needs merely to briefly leaf through the poorly written, and perhaps even
plagiarized 17th century pirate play The Sea Voyage to confirm this notion. However, while the
works of this genre, like the world itself, has evolved immensely in the past four hundred plus years,
an important thread of continuity has remained which runs throughout the numerous stories of the
pirate genre. Facilitating the rich, adventurous story lines, and the formation of lovable characters,
the ability of the pirate genres protagonists to precariously balance their boyish actions with bravery
are paramount.

Treasure Island Quotes
The book Treasure Island, first takes place in England during the mid 1700s. As the novel continues,
the setting changes from England to the port of Bristol, where Jim first meets Long John Silver for
the first time. Once at the port of Bristol Jim, the doctor, and the rest of the crew venture to Treasure
Island on the Hispaniola.
There are four important characters in Treasure Island, they are Jim Hawkins, Long John Silver,
Doctor Livesey, and Squire Trelawney. Jim Hawkins is the narrator of most of the book. He is also
the protagonist in the book. Jim is the reason why they went to look for the treasure on Treasure

Theme Of Criminality In Treasure Island
Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and directed by Byron Haskin in the
movie "Treasure Island" (1950), the themes of Criminality and Exploration are evident throughout
the book. Throughout this essay, I shall discuss about the importance of both themes and how they
represented through the story of "Treasure Island". The theme of Criminality is shown throughout
the book when Billy Bones (the Captain) and Long John Silver (the antagonist) receives the Black
Spot, which symbolises the official verdict or judgement of one's crime. It consists of a round piece
of paper or card, with a black spot on one side, and the other conveys a message delivered to the
accused. The reason why pirates are so afraid of legal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows when they finally receive the treasure, but then instantly realize the number of lives,
it had taken just to get hands on it. On account of the crime and punishments visible through the
story, the theme of criminality is evident right throughout the story. The theme of Exploration is
shown throughout the novel when Jim and his allies successively received the map, since it shows
the needs of exploration to receive the treasure, while also transforming Jim from an ordinary child
to a sailor and a hero. However, the map also symbolises the vanity of desire. Each and every person
wants the map and seems willing to go to preposterous ends to grab the map. Ironically, Stevenson
sooner or later shows us that the map was useless from start to end, thanks to Ben Gunn excavating
the treasure to another place, which in turn, puts the most recent possessor (Silver) not into a final
delight, but into a significant frustration. This also symbolises the futility of hunting for reward.
"And thereupon we all entered the cave. It was a large, airy place, with a little spring and a pool of
clear water, overhung with ferns. The floor was sand. Before

Coming to Terms With Evil in Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, Treasure Island, is a
fast–paced adventure tale about a boy developing into an adult and coming to terms with the
presence of evil in the world. Jim Hawkins is first portrayed as a naïve and innocent child.
Throughout his adventures with Long John Silver, he matures into a heroic young man. Before the
pirates enter Jim's life he lives with his parents in a small secluded inn that they own and operate.
Up to this point he has lived a fairly sheltered life, completely devoid of adventure or excitement.
The beginning of Jim's pirate adventure is marked by the settling of Billy Bones at the Admiral
Benbow Inn. Bones is an old pirate seeking a safe place ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He takes Pew to the Inn to meet with Billy Bones. When Bones spots Pew he becomes quite
anxious. Pew passes a paper to Bones and leaves. When Bones realizes that he has been given The
Black Spot he is so distressed that he suffers a fatal stroke. Even though Jim states that he never
liked the captain much, he still finds himself upset at his passing. He cries out for his mother's help.
This demonstrates that Jim is still just a child and is scared of the events he has witnessed. Jim
proceeds to tell his mother everything he has learned from the pirates. They both become quite
frightened and decide to leave the inn. They go to the village to ask for help but no one wants to
become involved in such hazardous business. Jim and his mother head back to the inn alone to
collect the money owed by the captain. This is where the initial development of Jim's bravery
begins. Jim also becomes responsible when he takes care of his weary mother after escaping the inn.
Since the death of his father, Jim is the man of the house and must grow into the role. He soon
demonstrates his bravery again by taking the papers from Bones's chest to Dr. Livesey. He stops
letting events pass him by, instead becoming an active participant in his life. This is an enormous
step in becoming more mature. When Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney realize that Jim has found a
treasure map, they decide to embark on a journey to collect the pirates' plunder. Jim is

What Is Treasure Island A Coming Of Age Story
In our society the coming of age story has become part of the main stream. It is seen in famous
movies such as the Wizard Of Oz, Star Wars, and the Harry Potter series. Robert Louis Stevenson's
coming of age story, Treasure Island, originally published in 1883, was the base for many of those
movies. Jim Hawkins a young boy who runs an inn along with his mother and father takes an
unexpected turn when a pirate named Billy Bones comes barging in the inn one day. When the pirate
suddenly dies Hawkins finds himself in possession of a valuable map that leads to a treasure beyond
his imagination. Jim Hawkins sets sail in search of this treasure with a noble doctor, a trustworthy
captain, and a mutinous crew of pirates, to find what he was really ... Show more content on

In the classic mid century tale this always seemed to be the knight having to slay the dragon. Young
Jim Hawkins had some dragons to slay of his own. Throughout the journey he has to endure the
shenanigans of the pirates. He hears about the mutiny that was going to rise, and the fights back
against them. He uses his wits to avoid being captured, and has to fear for his life. When aboard the
ship he is attacked and is almost murdered by Israel Hands, but he kills him in self defense. He
warns, "One more step, Mr. Hands," said I, "and I'll blow your brains out! Dead men don't bite, you
know," (113). He does not regret killing him, he knew that Israel Hands was a diseased man. He
would have killed Jim just as he killed one of his shipmates. This endeavor changed him into a more
rugged and hardened person. Not only is he changed from the killing of Hands, but from the journey
itself. He experienced the adventure of sailing, but also witnessed the rotten life of a pirate. Once he
returned he had no interest for any more adventures or treasure. Although the story is told through
the eyes of Jim Hawkins, the story is more about the adventure. The journey is what changes the
character, and the audience gets to witness it. Stevenson wrote with inspiration from playing with
his step sons. The story was meant to fulfill the dreams of people who have wished that they would

Evolution of the Character Jim in Stevenson's Treasure...
Evolution of the Character Jim in Stevenson's Treasure Island
Everyone has two sides to their personality. Sometimes one side is displayed and other times the
opposite side is displayed. In 1883, Robert Louis Stevenson created, Treasure Island. While some of
the characters in this novel are extremely witty, and courageous; others are full of animosity, deceit,
and greed. In this novel the main character shows all of these characteristics.
Jim Hawkins is introduced from the opening of the novel. Jim, who helps his mother at the Admiral
Benbow Inn, finds a much–wanted treasure map. Telling only a selected few Jim, Dr. Livesey,
Captain Smollett, Long John Silver, and the rest of the crew set off for Treasure Island. Once on the

There are three aspects of characterization that will show the reader how Jim changes from a passive
to an aggressive character. This is shown by Jim's actions, appearance and by what other people
think of him.
Jim is a respected young man. "Nobody more welcome than yourself my son" John Silver would say
to him (54). Silver thinks the world of Jim. Later in the novel the reader finds out that Silver
questions Jim. "I see you were smart when I first set my eyes on you; but this here gets away from
me clean" (156). Silver says this to him Jim after he confronts all of the mutineers face to face. Jim
is even threatened by the mutineers, but that doesn't stop him from saying what is on his mind. This
is a very different and brave move for Jim to make considering how passive he is in the beginning of
the novel.
Jim, in the beginning of the story, is also portrayed as a disciplined, hard worker. His actions show
this when on the first day out at sea he works extremely hard and accomplishes all of his work, no
matter how tired he is. "We never had a night at the 'Admiral Benbow' when I had half the work? I
was dog tired" (52). But, later he makes a dramatic change. He kills several men, capsizes the ship,
and faces death with a laugh. "As for the schooner, it was I who cut her cable, and it was I who
killed the men you had aboard of her, and it was I who brought her where you will never see her
more" (158). Jim's actions are far

Little Women and Treasure Island: Fatherhood
Compare and contrast the depiction of fatherhoods in Little Women and Treasure Island. When
discussing fatherhood in relation to both novels, we see that in both, the father is either primarily
absent or irrelevant to the plot. The element of fatherhood comes from the characters designed to
replace or substitute the absent or lost fathers. Treasure Island finds two figures available for Jim to
form a paternal relationship, and the moral juxtaposition they present has as much to do with Jim
growing into a moral man, as it does him choosing a path to survival. In Little Women fatherhood is
represented by many different views of masculinity including Jo's attempt to fill her absent father's
shoes. The differences and similarities between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alcott's decision to produce the sequel to Little Women greatly establishes the role fatherhood plays
in her story, whilst Mr March is away, Jo is fulfilling her own prophecy of being "the man of the
family"(Alcott, 1998 p.9) and upon his return is free to live her life as a 'little woman', the
significance of Beth's death means Jo's desire to be a man is also over, and she strives to imitate her
departed sister by neglecting the proactive and masculine personality she assumed in order to cope
with being head of a household. In contrast to Alcott's desire to be successful financially,
Stevenson's own efforts concerning Treasure Island were of a more innovative intent, to create a
novel which not only featured a romantic story but served merely to entertain and inspire without an
element of educating. Stevenson aspires to a more unconventional style of appealing to young boys,
without moral preaching or the inclusion of religious implication; which Alcott endeavours to do
with her inclusion of Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress and her references to God, the most fatherly figure
of all. "If you learn to feel the strength and tenderness of your Heavenly Father as you do that of
your earthly one. The more you love and trust Him, the nearer you will feel to Him" (Alcott, 1998
p.80) The fatherly characters are produced by two authors who had interesting relationships with
their own fathers and who subsequently introduce their own opinions to the

Examples Of Treasure In Treasure Island
Ever wondered why authors write books about treasure? Almost every adventurous book have some
sort of treasure in it. Treasure in a book represent a common goal, a goal characters in the book want
to achieve. The common goal then leads to conflicts and the story builds on from there. In Treasure
Island, Jim Hawkins sets on an adventure to find the treasure. He faces tough competition but in the
end does get his hands on the treasure. However, the most important was not his physical treasure.
The real treasure Jim Hawkins obtained in Treasure Island is the knowledge and maturity from the
experience of the journey. In the beginning of the story, it is very clear that Jim is frightened by the
events that occurred and make readers doubt if he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a life or death situation and Hands was also an experienced fighter. Nevertheless, Jim killed
Israel Hands by instinct. "In the horrid pain and surprise of the moment– I scarce can say it was by
my own volition, and I am sure it was without a conscious aim– both my pistols went off, and both
escaped out of my hands. They did not fall alone; with a choked cry, the coxswain loosed his grasp
upon the shrouds and plunged head first into the water."(Stevenson 307). Obviously, he was
distressed and was in shock by the fact that he actually killed Israel Hands, but quickly he regained
his calm. "Gradually my mind came back again, my pulses quieted down to a more natural time, and
I was once more in possession of myself."(Stevenson 310). It takes incredible effort to be able to
calm down after killing a person at the age of twelve. Jim handled it very well and proved that he

Jim Hawkins In Treasure Island
In the book Treasure Island, there are two main characters, Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, the
pirate and leader of mutineers. They sound nothing alike in the beginning, the easily frightened Jim
and the cunning and silver–tongued Long John Silver, but by the end of the story, the difference is
not so profound as had been expected. This, including the fact that they are willing to do whatever it
takes to get things done, even breaking a few rules. Jim Hawkins is the first character introduced
when writing down what had happened on the Island several years later. He starts off to seem like a
rather meek boy, who is afraid of the strange man in the Admiral Benbow. This starts to change for
Jim though when Billy Bones dies and he and his mother learn of the pirates coming to the Admiral
Benbow. He takes charge when needed, as seen when he touches the body of the dead Billy Bones
while looking for a key to the chest Bones had. He also takes charge when the pirates storm the
Benbow and he keeps him and his mother hidden out of the sight of the pirates.
When Long John Silver is first introduced, however, he is "in cheerful spirits"(pg, 55) and a "clean,
and pleasant–tempered landlord"(pg, 57). He is also described as very loud and boisterous and
seems to be a well–liked man who is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

all the issues they encountered. He still keeps a part of the old Jim when he sneaks off to find Ben
Gunn and doesn't think about how he is leaving only two men to protect the fort they had set up. It
also shows when he gets up on the Hispaniola which either shows bravery or

How Does Jim Mature In Treasure Island
Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is an adventure story with pirates, greed, and violence
taking place in the mid 1700's. It is narrated by Jim Hawkins. Jim is an adventurous boy that lives in
a inn that his father owns. A cruel captain, who resides in the inn, dies, leaving a much – wanted
treasure map. When Jim finally gets hold of the map, Jim embarks on a long journey to find the
treasure. Despite the many difficulties, Jim shows great strength of character as he matures from the
journey. Throughout Treasure Island, Jim displays tremendous courage. He knew all about the
danger of pirates because the captain had hired him to keep his "weather eye open for a seafaring

Surprisingly, he tries to warn the captain when he sees that the Black Dog, a murderous pirate, is
coming. Jim is also very compassionate. When his mother desired to go back to get the sea chest
which meant encountering Pew, a terrifying pirate, even though he felt "a great weight of terror"
(22), he went to fulfill his mother's wish to get the sea chest. Jim had suffered through many hard
times, but he always persevered. He faced a huge disappointment when he found out that Long John
Silver wasn't the "clean and pleasant tempered" (66) man he always thought him to be. Instead he
turns out to be "cruel and heartless" (66). Jim realizes how cruel Silver really is when he overhears
Silver talking about the mutiny that they were planning. He witnessed Silver openly murder a man
who refused to join the mutiny. Even after seeing that, he stayed composed and continued trying to
get the treasure. Unfortunately, Jim is a very impulsive boy, which leads him to make foolish
mistakes. When the ship was just arriving at the island, he jumped to shore and separated from the
group. He risked his life and realized that it was a dumb thing to do. Jim's impulsive personality also
led him to do good things. For example, he killed Israel, a cruel pirate, right away. If he had not
done this, Israel would have certainly killed

Independency And Maturing In Treasure Island
Themes
Independency and Maturing
Treasure Island is a story about adventure. However it encompasses the theme of Independency and
maturing. Jim is a young boy who is in the middle of becoming a Independent and mature adult. He
has developed throughout the adventure and has turned into a role model for the others around him.
He is very courageous and has developed mature habits as the book progresses top the end.
The uselessness of Wealth
Treasure Island is the story of a voyage in which the pirates tend to get rich. Many of the pirates on
the boat were very poor. The treasure was a motive for them throughout the whole book. The pirates
and crew desired wealth and were extremely greedy. The theme of uselessness of wealth is one that
constantly reappears throughout the whole book. Stevenson portraits this when the pirates constantly
switch sides, betrayed each other, and do very violent and uncivil things just to get to the treasure.
Stevenson portraits the uselessness of desire when the pirates discover that the treasure map leads
them to a deserted hole. X did not mark the spot as finding nothing distresses the pirates. The dead

They seem to be the only ones who follow the call of duty: they stay loyal to their friends but don't
necessarily feel obliged to follow specific orders. Jim helps all the pirates and crew even though he
is a runaway and Doctor Livesey saves Long John Silver. The call of duty remains an important part
of the pirates lives throughout the novel. Although the rest of the pirates commit various crimes,

Treasure Island Quotes
Jim: The most important person in Treasure Island " I'll give you a piece of my mind. I've always
liked you, I have, for a lad of spirit, and the picture of my own self when I was young and
handsome." Now, Long John Silver didn't say that for nothing. In Treasure Island, Jim was a hard
worker, and his work received positive feedback from all. Jim always wanted to do his best (not to
forget do what he thought was right), and with that Jim also added another key part, which was also
the basis of my essay: Why he was the most important person in the story. Because of his
independent and adventurous side, Jim was the most important character in the story. When Billy
Bones brought up the novel, Jim was there to carry it on. Although Billy Bones died early and
wasn't there to protect the map/treasure, Jim stayed loyal and carried the map to safety. By doing
that he created the spark that the novel needed to have, which was the ... Show more content on

Pirates Relationship In Treasure Island
These scenes are different, as in the setting and the way they happen in the story. However, pages
13–14 and 34–35 do share a common idea about the pirates' relationships and views of one another.
On pages 13 and 14, the interaction between Black Dog and the captain is friendly at first, but
quickly escalates to violence once they begin arguing and soon after, fighting each other. Black Dog
and Bill were old shipmates, which would make the reader assume that they would have a strong
bond, or at least still somewhat of a friendship. This excerpt from the chapter explains that the
pirates obviously did not feel a sense of kindness for one another. In the next scene, on page 34,
when Pew insults the pirates and explains how he "faced Bill," it shows that he feels no sense of
empathy or friendship to the pirates, not even the captain. When Pew makes an attempt to attack the
men, it helps show that he does not care for them. The pirates ... Show more content on

The men in the story do work together to accomplish something, but it does not take much for the
pirates to turn against each other. For example, some of the characters, such as Pew or Jim, want the
captain's riches. Soon after the captain died, his crew began to backstab each other to gain his
wealth. The relationships of the pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy are not shown as loyal team
members. While the pirates are self centered, clearly they need and depend on each other, otherwise
it would be every man for himself. Why else would they still be together as a crew if they did not
need each other? The men act as a crew, but as soon as they discover treasure or riches, they would
without a doubt beat each other up to get to it. A reason the pirates do not have good relationships is
because they are using each other for their own survival, rather than caring about one another's

What Happened To John Silver's Treasure Island?
Question 11) Personally, I think the title fits the book because it's about a crew of sailors plus Jim
Hawkins to an island to search for buried treasure. The island is introduced to us as skeleton island
by the captain, "'Yes, sir Skeleton Island as they calls it. It was a main place for pirates once...'"
(pg96) Jim starts calling it Treasure Island I think that's because the name "Skeleton Island" is quite
formidable and doesn't sound like a place with lots of treasure, but the name " Treasure Island" on
the other hand sound like a great place to go to find treasure because it sound like an island full of
treasure which is exactly what the island is an island full of treasure. In addition to, the protagonist
calling it "Treasure Island," it's the fact that they're on an island full of treasure that also makes me
think that the title fits the book. Furthermore, the book's storyline revolves around treasure like for

Robert Stevenson's Treasure Island Essay
In Robert Stevenson's Treasure Island, Jim, the protagonist, tried to get Captain Flint's legendary
treasure while fighting lying, deceitful pirates. Robert Louis Stevenson used suspense, imagery, and
foreshadowing as part of his craft to tell the story of Treasure Island. Each literary technique had a
significant impact on the plot and characters. One example of author's craft in Treasure Island is
suspense. One way suspense is used is leaving cliffhangers at the ends of many of the chapters,
making the reader want to continue. One such cliffhanger is at the end of chapter 10, when Jim
climbs into the apple barrel. The chapter ends with, "I found out that the lives of all the honest hands

The imagery gives the reader clues about who this man is and what he does. Imagery in Treasure
Island is used in many ways to develop mood and develop characters. The final example of author's
craft used in Treasure Island is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing was used on page 53, when it said,
"'There's only one man I'm afraid of.' 'And who's that?' cried squire. 'Name the dog sir!' 'You',
replied the doctor 'for you can not hold your tongue.'" This quote gives the reader enough
information to have a good idea what will happen next, but doesn't give it away. The book also read
" 'Well Silver', replied the doctor, 'if that is so, I'll go one step further: look out for squalls when you
find it.'" This quote allows the reader to make a prediction that there will be a fight or argument
when they find the treasure. The use of foreshadowing in Treasure Island help build anticipation on
what might happen next therefore, adding more of a dramatic element to the storyline. Suspense,
imagery, and foreshadowing were elements used in Treasure Island to enhance the story. One
example being that imagery was used to set the mood

Themes In Treasure Island
Treasure Island Essay Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and directed by
Byron Haskin in the movie "Treasure Island" (1950), the themes of Criminality and Exploration are
evident throughout the book. Throughout this essay, I shall discuss about the importance of both
themes and how through the story of "Treasure Island". The theme of Criminality is shown
throughout the book when Billy Bones (the Captain) and Long John Silver (the antagonist) receives
the Black Spot, which symbolises the official verdict or judgement of one's crime. It consists of a
round piece of paper or card, with a black spot on one side, and the other conveys a message
delivered to the accused. The reason why pirates are so afraid of legal punishment is the reason they
go to sea, because at the sea, it is a free country. Here is a quote describing the criminality and the
fear of the captain after the run–in at the Benbow Inn: "And now, sir," continued the doctor, "since I
now know there's such a fellow in my district, you may count I'll have an eye upon you day and
night. I'm not a doctor only; I'm a magistrate; and if I catch a breath of complaint against you, if it's
only for a piece of incivility like tonight's, I'll take effectual means to have you hunted down and
routed out of this. Let that suffice." (1.16) Here the quote states that due to pirates normally operate
at sea, they rarely come in contact with actual agents of the law. In this case, Billy Bones is the

Theme Of Identity In Treasure Island
In a quote by Joseph Kestner he said, "In Treasure Island, Hawkins is forced to achieve an identity,
but this process is riddled with ambiguity, including the fact that Jim commits murder and remains
haunted by the experience as a nightmare,"(______). He specializes in masculinity theory from
novels written in the late nineteenth century. Kestner is able to relate Jim because he is forced to
become a new person, kill a man to save his own life, and questions why situations happen. Wyeth

The use of darkness and shadowing conveys a sense of mystery and of the unknown, altogether
foreshadowing events to come. Jim is displayed under a shadow and his mother is in the sunlight
next to the house. Wyeth designed this image to show that Jim is about to go on a mysterious
journey, and his mother is going to stay where she is. Jim states, "I said goodbye to mother and the
cove where I had lived since I was born, and the dear old "Admiral Benbow" – since he was
repainted, no longer quite so dear," (57). Jim is walking away from everything that he has ever
known and starting his new life as an adult. Jim's house and his mother are illuminated by the light
to show that they are going to stay in a safe, known place; meanwhile, the darker figures, like Jim,
are heading to an unknown destination. The use of darkness shows that Jim has a dark path ahead of
him. Normally, darkness is associated with evil and corruption, which is fitting for Jim's path. The
use of darkness can foreshadow later in the novel to when Jim kills Israel Hands. Ultimately, when
Jim kills a man this shows how he became corrupt along his adventure. When Jim killed Hands, this
showed his transition from innocence to corruption, which can also be viewed as his maturation to
an adult. All transitions can mature us in both good and detrimental ways this instance happened to

Set in eighteenth century England, Treasure Island by Robert Louis–Stevenson revolves around the
narrator, Jim Hawkins, and his perilous search for buried treasure. Hawkins, a young and timid boy,
lives in an inn owned by his family. For a period of several months, a pirate named Billy Bones
stays at their inn, but eventually grows ill because of his overconsumption of rum. The buccaneer
dies of a heart attack, and the same night, pirates ransack his room. Fortunately, Hawkins had
already looked through Bones' property, taking the one thing that the pirates had sought: a map to a

hear their comrades plans to increase individual wealth, they immediately agree to revolt, motivated
by avarice. Those who resisted the plans of the corrupted individuals were killed upon the ship's
arrival to the island. However, even upon obtaining the loot, many still aren't placated, wanting
more, as it is impossible to satiate greed. At the end, when Jim tells about the treasure, he doesn't
mention the monetary value of it, only of horrible memories, hinting at the fact that the treasure
doesn't satisfy his original craving of adventure and wealth, but makes it worse, stating that "Oxen

the treasure was left behind (273). In this novel, Robert Louis Stevenson warns about the perils of

Biblical Heroism In Treasure Island By Robert Louis Stevenson
Noah. Moses. Joshua. Esther. What might all these people share in common? All were heroes in
light of the biblical understanding of the term, heroism. Matthew 20:28 states, "Just as the Son of
Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (NIV). This
verse embodies one of the components of a true hero's character. The biblical heroes mentioned
above were humble, led others by serving, counted others' needs more significant than their own,
and obeyed God's call for their lives. Of course, they were sinners and still stumbled and fell, but
their lives demonstrate true biblical heroism in their strivings to honor God and serve others. Noah
obeyed God's command to build an ark and rescued his family and the animals from the Flood.
Moses led the grumbling people of Israel out of Egypt and into the desert after continually pleading
with Pharaoh to let them go leave Egypt. Joshua listened to God's instruction and led the Israelites
around Jericho's walls until they came tumbling down. Uninvited, Esther came into King
Nebuchadnezzar's presence, asking him and Haman to dinner where she would eventually expose
Haman's evil plans and save the Jews. In Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, the main
characters, Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins, do not measure up in comparison to this biblical
standard of heroism. Therefore, neither Silver nor Jim are heroes in the biblical light of heroism. Jim
Hawkins' arrogance, cowardice, and selfishness

hidden in the woods while Jim goes back to the bunker. While at the bunker, Jim and his men are
repeatedly attacked by Silver. The next day, Jim boards the Hispanola and beaches it miles down
shore so no one can find it but him. Silver is greatly angered by this and captures Jim along with his
men. They happily trade Silver the treasure map for their freedom, but when Silver goes to look for
the treasure, he finds that someone has taken it. What Silver did not know was that earlier in the day,
Ben Gunn had discovered the treasure and had hidden it in his cave. Jim and his men now have the
treasure, and all of Silver’s men leave after they get in a fight. Jim and his men take
Silver aboard to reach civilization and to have him imprisoned. But when they reach shore, Silver
grabs two handfuls of treasure and fleas, never to be seen again.
From the beginning of the novel, the reader gets an evil connotation from Silver’s
character. Although Jim likes Silver, the reader knows that Silver is the one legged man that the

Innocence In Treasure Island
There is no single definition of children's literature. It can be defined broadly as anything that
children read or more specifically as fiction, non–fiction, poetry, novel, or drama. The focus of this
essay will be the boyhood of Laurie in Little Women and boyhood of Jim in Treasure Island. These
novels were written in different continents, which draw between British and American literary
tradition in the 19th century. These novels are compared with respect to the type of adventure and
relationship that can be proposed readers. Laurie seems to be denied his freedom is opposed to

Integrity In Treasure Island
In Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, Jim Hawkins develops a growing sense of integrity
and eventual ability to do what is morally right, no matter what the personal cost. Jim goes from
behaving like a kid ready for an adventure out at sea to an independent person understanding the ups
and downs of the journey and understanding struggle. In the beginning of the novel, Jim becomes
very excited, not thinking about the many troubles he may run into. All he wants rise to have the
freedom to take control and play a part as lead unlike in the Admiral Benbow. After waiting for a
long time, one evening, Squire Trelawney sent a letter telling Jim about the new crew of pirates,
Long John Silver, and the ship, the Hispaniola, he got so excited he could not ... Show more content

Overall, Jim wants to go on a wild adventure even though this is a big change from his life in the
barren countryside. Later in the novel, Jim has to kill Isreal Hands after learning of his mischievous
plan to exterminate Jim even though he seems disabled "all fallen together in a bundle... too weak to
bear the light" (147). Then Jim really gets involved in sailing and turns around by instinct, only to
find Hands ready to strike with "a long knife, or rather a short dirk" (146). Then Jim strikes back,
even though to Jim, it will always be wrong to injure someone, but Jim has to save his own life.
During this life–changing moment of a fight Jim narrates, "I lost no time in changing the priming of
my pistol, and then, having one ready for service, and to make assurance doubly sure, I proceeded to
draw the load of the other, and recharge it afresh from the beginning" (151). This illustrates how Jim
is willing to shoot Hands with his two pistols to save his life and his crew's

Treasure Island: The Amish Coming Of Age Traditions
The Coming of Age "Discern of the coming on of years, and think not to do the same things still; for
age will not be defied." (Francis Bacon) In Treasure Island the young boy Jim ventures away from
home to help find a treasure on an island. As Jim losses his child like dreams into a role of a sailor
pirate life he transitions from child to adult like. "I began to feel pretty desperate, for I felt altogether
helpless" (Stevenson 53). Jim feels that he is inferior to the crew when they add him the
responsibility of keeping an eye on Long John Silver. He is feeling as though he is a young boy that
is surrounded by older men. In another part Long John Silver gives a basic, wistful observation of
childhood, saying, "It's a pleasant thing to be young, and have ten toes, and you may lay to that"
(50). Unlike Jim in Treasure Island, Julie (Miyax) in Julie of the Wolves also deals with coming of
age. She leaves her home and gets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jewish boys and girls around 12–13 celebrate their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. This is to show that they
are committed to their faith and following the laws Jewish consider important. Amish coming of age
traditions consist of Rumspringa. Normally at age 16 youth are able to be unsupervised and enjoy
life pleasure. During this time they can venture out and explore the world giving them enough time
to evaluate if they want to return to the Amish culture. They must make a decision by age 26 in
which if they decide to return, will be baptized. In many Latin American countries young ladies
celebrate their coming of age at 15 in a celebration called a Quinceañera. It begins with a mass in
which the young lady is renewing her baptismal vows and presented under God as a young lady of
faith. After the mass there is a big celebration with family and friends. It is custom that the
quinceañera is presented with her last doll and given heels. This signifies that she is coming of

  • 1. Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure Summary I have read the Hardy Boys The Tower Treasure by Franklin W. Dixon. The Hardy Boys were delivering paper for their dad on their motorcycles. a blue car went flying by and then it went flying by again. They climbed the hill next to them and delivered the papers. They were going to Chets house to say hi, and they saw the blue car had crashed into a ditch there was no one in the car. They went down Chets driveway and saw that Chet was sad; the man had stolen Chets yellow car. Chet and the Hardy Boys went around town asking if anyone say a yellow car go bye. Their friend Callie who had a cake in her hand said Chets yellow car was going so fast that it scared her and she dropped the cake. The Hardy Boys went to the police station to see if the Chief knew anything. Once they got there, they saw that their rival detective, Detective Smuff was there with a man that worked at a ticket both. They were reporting a man in Chets yellow car had attempted to rob the ticket booth. The next day the boys were on the case and they had called in a couple of their friends to help. They all split up to look for clues and at the end they would meet at the park. At the park they ate and took a nap once they woke up they looked in the last place it could have been in, in. they looked in the woods near the park where there was an old dump they split up and looked. They found footsteps in the mud that led to small path in the woods and they walked along the path. Chets car was at the end of the path. Silver shows paternal liking and kindness for Jim. Other times Silver shows cruelness and extreme brutality in executing other sailors. The main idea of the story is finding the treasure. Ben Gunn has lived on the island for three years, and knows where the treasure lies. Before the pirates find Jim and his mother, Jim grabs a key and an oilskin packet from the old sea chest. Jim's father dies, and he and his mother flee to the nearby town and ask them to help them but they refuse to. They find a nearby bridge to hide under, and escape from the pirates. Finally, the people from the town decide to come to Jim and his mothers rescue. Later in the book, Jim hides in an apple barrel and overhears Silver and other crewmates about taking the ship once they have the treasure on the ship. Treasure Planet Movie Analysis Many films that are created have multiple thematic driving forces that are consistent– sometimes hard to differentiate, this can make a film lose a large amount of its emotional impact... Treasure Planet uses a unique method of intervening two separate integral thematic forces. Treasure Planet, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, is an animated science fiction retelling of the famous Treasure Island. We accompany a boy named Jim Hawkins on his journey to find Treasure Planet, a childhood dream that was forced by a fateful encounter with someone bearing a map. A map to the "Loot of a thousand worlds." Throughout this thrilling adventure, you also learn about Jim's family situation, his father leaving, and how it affects the way he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance: When we are first introduced to Jim in his current age, he is sailing skillfully over land, with a non–diegetic electric guitar playing in the wake of his sail to accentuate his skillful movements. The guitar leads into a full blown heroic sounding orchestral piece, halted by a cutscene where we see Jim being essentially arrested for trespassing. This pairs the electric guitar with Jim– further establishing his rebellious nature, the opposite of what we would expect with the exposition of Jim's character being a kind, curious, and slightly impatient child. Whenever an electric guitar is heard after this scene, it is because Jim is doing something reclass– but substantial. The next time we learn about Jim and his background– it is to the backing soundtrack of a song written by The Goo Goo Dolls, an American rock band. With multiple themes consistently at play, if not for the intervening of spectacularly placed music and directing, it would be confusing to the viewer to follow all three of the themes. This could become problematic, if you want to frame multiple themes or plots, you must be able to easily identify them. It's the difference between having a necklace braid in all grey and having a necklace braid that is color coded– without further inspection, at first glance, it would be hard to trace one string down a complicated braid. But, with each cord being a different color, it would be a breeze to identify any singular cord down ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When in the end, he turns out to be loyal to captain Smollett. This makes Silver interesting and unexpected. Silver is a natral leader. He is bold, outgoing, and always shares his opinion. After an unruly guest and then his father die, Jim embarks on a journey to find an island that is supposedly full of treasure, but this journey will leave him scarred and changed forever. Jim is not a normal hero; he is simply full of luck to get out of certain situations. If the book had been from the ringleader of the pirate group on the ship, Long John Silver, the book would be missing a lot of information about how Jim's group manages to discover the pirates' plot and thwart their plan. Jim and Silver are similar because they both show different sides of their personality throughout the book, are persuasive with others, and use cunning to get out of tough situations. During this phase, people establish through their dealings who they actually are in addition to what they are worth. For instance, Treasure Island is an adventure tale, but it is also the story of one boy's (Jim Hawkins) coming of age. On the outset of the voyage, Jim was a timid adolescent, but by the closing stages, he had matured incredibly. In his novel, Treasure Island, author Robert Louis Stevenson focuses primarily on the journey of main character Jim Hawkins to exemplify the process of growing up and proving oneself. Jim finally begins to see that his adventure has forced him to forget about his previous life at the Inn. He realizes he is leaving his normal life, the Inn, and his mother (Stevenson 59–60). Jim may have got the feeling he was being replaced, but he knew that day would come soon enough. "In many respects a typical British boy of his age, Jim has lead a sheltered life at the Admiral Benbow Inn. The arrival of Billy Bones triggers his desire to explore the larger world beyond his home. Although he has grown up on the sea coast, Jim knows little of the seafaring life. His adventures constitute on initiation into adulthood, by means of which he learns survival skills and moral lessons that far eclipse the typical education of a British gentleman" (Beetz, Niemeyer 2007). Although only the age of thirteen, Jim was determined to set sail and wasn't going to let his age define who he was, until tragedy struck. Following the death of his father, Jim took this opportunity to discover himself on the open sea. It was at this time that Jim would embark on a journey he would never forget. Theme Of Criminality In Treasure Island Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and directed by Byron Haskin in the movie "Treasure Island" (1950), the themes of Criminality and Exploration are evident throughout the book. Throughout this essay, I shall discuss about the importance of both themes and how they represented through the story of "Treasure Island". The theme of Criminality is shown throughout the book when Billy Bones (the Captain) and Long John Silver (the antagonist) receives the Black Spot, which symbolises the official verdict or judgement of one's crime. It consists of a round piece of paper or card, with a black spot on one side, and the other conveys a message delivered to the accused. The reason why pirates are so afraid of legal ... The theme of Exploration is shown throughout the novel when Jim and his allies successively received the map, since it shows the needs of exploration to receive the treasure, while also transforming Jim from an ordinary child to a sailor and a hero. However, the map also symbolises the vanity of desire. Each and every person wants the map and seems willing to go to preposterous ends to grab the map. Ironically, Stevenson sooner or later shows us that the map was useless from start to end, thanks to Ben Gunn excavating the treasure to another place, which in turn, puts the most recent possessor (Silver) not into a final delight, but into a significant frustration. This also symbolises the futility of hunting for reward. "And thereupon we all entered the cave. It was a large, airy place, with a little spring and a pool of clear water, overhung with ferns. This is shown by Jim's actions, appearance and by what other people think of him. Jim is a respected young man. "Nobody more welcome than yourself my son" John Silver would say to him (54). Silver thinks the world of Jim. Later in the novel the reader finds out that Silver questions Jim. "I see you were smart when I first set my eyes on you; but this here gets away from me clean" (156). Silver says this to him Jim after he confronts all of the mutineers face to face. Jim is even threatened by the mutineers, but that doesn't stop him from saying what is on his mind. • 85. Little Women and Treasure Island: Fatherhood Compare and contrast the depiction of fatherhoods in Little Women and Treasure Island. When discussing fatherhood in relation to both novels, we see that in both, the father is either primarily absent or irrelevant to the plot. The element of fatherhood comes from the characters designed to replace or substitute the absent or lost fathers. Treasure Island finds two figures available for Jim to form a paternal relationship, and the moral juxtaposition they present has as much to do with Jim growing into a moral man, as it does him choosing a path to survival. In Little Women fatherhood is represented by many different views of masculinity including Jo's attempt to fill her absent father's shoes. The differences and similarities between ... In contrast to Alcott's desire to be successful financially, Stevenson's own efforts concerning Treasure Island were of a more innovative intent, to create a novel which not only featured a romantic story but served merely to entertain and inspire without an element of educating. Stevenson aspires to a more unconventional style of appealing to young boys, without moral preaching or the inclusion of religious implication; which Alcott endeavours to do with her inclusion of Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress and her references to God, the most fatherly figure of all. • 93. Jim Hawkins In Treasure Island In the book Treasure Island, there are two main characters, Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver, the pirate and leader of mutineers. They sound nothing alike in the beginning, the easily frightened Jim and the cunning and silver–tongued Long John Silver, but by the end of the story, the difference is not so profound as had been expected. This, including the fact that they are willing to do whatever it takes to get things done, even breaking a few rules. Jim Hawkins is the first character introduced when writing down what had happened on the Island several years later. He starts off to seem like a rather meek boy, who is afraid of the strange man in the Admiral Benbow. This starts to change for Jim though when Billy Bones dies and he and his mother learn of the pirates coming to the Admiral Benbow. He takes charge when needed, as seen when he touches the body of the dead Billy Bones while looking for a key to the chest Bones had. He also takes charge when the pirates storm the Benbow and he keeps him and his mother hidden out of the sight of the pirates. When Long John Silver is first introduced, however, he is "in cheerful spirits"(pg, 55) and a "clean, and pleasant–tempered landlord"(pg, 57). • 97. How Does Jim Mature In Treasure Island Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is an adventure story with pirates, greed, and violence taking place in the mid 1700's. It is narrated by Jim Hawkins. Jim is an adventurous boy that lives in a inn that his father owns. A cruel captain, who resides in the inn, dies, leaving a much – wanted treasure map. When Jim finally gets hold of the map, Jim embarks on a long journey to find the treasure. Despite the many difficulties, Jim shows great strength of character as he matures from the journey. Throughout Treasure Island, Jim displays tremendous courage. When his mother desired to go back to get the sea chest which meant encountering Pew, a terrifying pirate, even though he felt "a great weight of terror" (22), he went to fulfill his mother's wish to get the sea chest. Jim had suffered through many hard times, but he always persevered. He faced a huge disappointment when he found out that Long John Silver wasn't the "clean and pleasant tempered" (66) man he always thought him to be. Instead he turns out to be "cruel and heartless" (66). Jim realizes how cruel Silver really is when he overhears Silver talking about the mutiny that they were planning. He witnessed Silver openly murder a man who refused to join the mutiny. Even after seeing that, he stayed composed and continued trying to get the treasure. Unfortunately, Jim is a very impulsive boy, which leads him to make foolish mistakes. When the ship was just arriving at the island, he jumped to shore and separated from the group. He risked his life and realized that it was a dumb thing to do. Jim's impulsive personality also led him to do good things. For example, he killed Israel, a cruel pirate, right away. Jim is a young boy who is in the middle of becoming a Independent and mature adult. He has developed throughout the adventure and has turned into a role model for the others around him. He is very courageous and has developed mature habits as the book progresses top the end. The uselessness of Wealth Treasure Island is the story of a voyage in which the pirates tend to get rich. Many of the pirates on the boat were very poor. The treasure was a motive for them throughout the whole book. The pirates and crew desired wealth and were extremely greedy. The theme of uselessness of wealth is one that constantly reappears throughout the whole book. Stevenson portraits this when the pirates constantly switch sides, betrayed each other, and do very violent and uncivil things just to get to the treasure. I've always liked you, I have, for a lad of spirit, and the picture of my own self when I was young and handsome." Now, Long John Silver didn't say that for nothing. In Treasure Island, Jim was a hard worker, and his work received positive feedback from all. Jim always wanted to do his best (not to forget do what he thought was right), and with that Jim also added another key part, which was also the basis of my essay: Why he was the most important person in the story. Because of his independent and adventurous side, Jim was the most important character in the story. When Billy Bones brought up the novel, Jim was there to carry it on. • 109. Pirates Relationship In Treasure Island These scenes are different, as in the setting and the way they happen in the story. However, pages 13–14 and 34–35 do share a common idea about the pirates' relationships and views of one another. On pages 13 and 14, the interaction between Black Dog and the captain is friendly at first, but quickly escalates to violence once they begin arguing and soon after, fighting each other. Black Dog and Bill were old shipmates, which would make the reader assume that they would have a strong bond, or at least still somewhat of a friendship. This excerpt from the chapter explains that the pirates obviously did not feel a sense of kindness for one another. In the next scene, on page 34, when Pew insults the pirates and explains how he "faced Bill," it shows that he feels no sense of empathy or friendship to the pirates, not even the captain. When Pew makes an attempt to attack the men, it helps show that he does not care for them. The pirates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The men in the story do work together to accomplish something, but it does not take much for the pirates to turn against each other. For example, some of the characters, such as Pew or Jim, want the captain's riches. Soon after the captain died, his crew began to backstab each other to gain his wealth. The relationships of the pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy are not shown as loyal team members. While the pirates are self centered, clearly they need and depend on each other, otherwise it would be every man for himself. Why else would they still be together as a crew if they did not need each other? The men act as a crew, but as soon as they discover treasure or riches, they would without a doubt beat each other up to get to it. • 113. What Happened To John Silver's Treasure Island? Question 11) Personally, I think the title fits the book because it's about a crew of sailors plus Jim Hawkins to an island to search for buried treasure. The island is introduced to us as skeleton island by the captain, "'Yes, sir Skeleton Island as they calls it. It was a main place for pirates once...'" (pg96) Jim starts calling it Treasure Island I think that's because the name "Skeleton Island" is quite formidable and doesn't sound like a place with lots of treasure, but the name " Treasure Island" on the other hand sound like a great place to go to find treasure because it sound like an island full of treasure which is exactly what the island is an island full of treasure. In addition to, the protagonist calling it "Treasure Island," it's the fact that they're on an island full of treasure that also makes me think that the title fits the book. Robert Louis Stevenson used suspense, imagery, and foreshadowing as part of his craft to tell the story of Treasure Island. Each literary technique had a significant impact on the plot and characters. One example of author's craft in Treasure Island is suspense. One way suspense is used is leaving cliffhangers at the ends of many of the chapters, making the reader want to continue. The imagery gives the reader clues about who this man is and what he does. Imagery in Treasure Island is used in many ways to develop mood and develop characters. The final example of author's craft used in Treasure Island is foreshadowing. Foreshadowing was used on page 53, when it said, "'There's only one man I'm afraid of.' 'And who's that?' cried squire. 'Name the dog sir!' 'You', replied the doctor 'for you can not hold your tongue.'" This quote gives the reader enough information to have a good idea what will happen next, but doesn't give it away. The book also read " 'Well Silver', replied the doctor, 'if that is so, I'll go one step further: look out for squalls when you find it.'" This quote allows the reader to make a prediction that there will be a fight or argument when they find the treasure. • 121. Themes In Treasure Island Treasure Island Essay Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and directed by Byron Haskin in the movie "Treasure Island" (1950), the themes of Criminality and Exploration are evident throughout the book. Throughout this essay, I shall discuss about the importance of both themes and how through the story of "Treasure Island". The reason why pirates are so afraid of legal punishment is the reason they go to sea, because at the sea, it is a free country. Here is a quote describing the criminality and the fear of the captain after the run–in at the Benbow Inn: "And now, sir," continued the doctor, "since I now know there's such a fellow in my district, you may count I'll have an eye upon you day and night. I'm not a doctor only; I'm a magistrate; and if I catch a breath of complaint against you, if it's only for a piece of incivility like tonight's, I'll take effectual means to have you hunted down and routed out of this. Let that suffice." (1.16) Here the quote states that due to pirates normally operate at sea, they rarely come in contact with actual agents of the law. In this case, Billy Bones is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The use of darkness and shadowing conveys a sense of mystery and of the unknown, altogether foreshadowing events to come. Jim is displayed under a shadow and his mother is in the sunlight next to the house. Wyeth designed this image to show that Jim is about to go on a mysterious journey, and his mother is going to stay where she is. Jim states, "I said goodbye to mother and the cove where I had lived since I was born, and the dear old "Admiral Benbow" – since he was repainted, no longer quite so dear," (57). Jim is walking away from everything that he has ever known and starting his new life as an adult. Jim's house and his mother are illuminated by the light to show that they are going to stay in a safe, known place; meanwhile, the darker figures, like Jim, are heading to an unknown destination. The use of darkness shows that Jim has a dark path ahead of him. Normally, darkness is associated with evil and corruption, which is fitting for Jim's path. The use of darkness can foreshadow later in the novel to when Jim kills Israel Hands. Ultimately, when Jim kills a man this shows how he became corrupt along his adventure. When Jim killed Hands, this showed his transition from innocence to corruption, which can also be viewed as his maturation to an adult. • 133. Biblical Heroism In Treasure Island By Robert Louis Stevenson Noah. Moses. Joshua. Esther. What might all these people share in common? All were heroes in light of the biblical understanding of the term, heroism. Matthew 20:28 states, "Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (NIV). This verse embodies one of the components of a true hero's character. The biblical heroes mentioned above were humble, led others by serving, counted others' needs more significant than their own, and obeyed God's call for their lives. Of course, they were sinners and still stumbled and fell, but their lives demonstrate true biblical heroism in their strivings to honor God and serve others. Noah obeyed God's command to build an ark and rescued his family and the animals from the Flood. Moses led the grumbling people of Israel out of Egypt and into the desert after continually pleading with Pharaoh to let them go leave Egypt. Joshua listened to God's instruction and led the Israelites around Jericho's walls until they came tumbling down. Uninvited, Esther came into King Nebuchadnezzar's presence, asking him and Haman to dinner where she would eventually expose Haman's evil plans and save the Jews. In Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, the main characters, Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins, do not measure up in comparison to this biblical standard of heroism. Therefore, neither Silver nor Jim are heroes in the biblical light of heroism. Jim Hawkins' arrogance, cowardice, and selfishness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
