Life Story Of Hanah Watts
I'm certain that I have always loved dogs. Even though I was terrified of them until I was 5, I have
always loved dogs. There's something about dogs that you can't compare with humans. It's like they
will always be your best friend, always. And that my friends, is the life story of Hanah Watts. Oh,
and there's some other stuff too. I was born in Columbia, SC on May 2, 2002. I have a little brother
named Nelson and an American Cocker Spaniel named Gabby. I went to Brennen Elementary
School in grades k–5. I believe it was in 3rd grade that I realized I read more than everyone else, and
5th when I realized I was a fully–fledged fangirl. I started dancing when I was three or four, and am
still dancing to this day. From September to December my

Narrative Essay On Red Pomeranian
The Day Charlie the Pomeranian came home.
Early October 2009, a small red pomeranian was born in a litter of eight to two purebred
pomeranians. To a veterinarian that spent their career living in North Bay, Ontario. One of the
coldest populated places in northern Ontario, winters and snowstorms that beat down onto you until
all you feel is cold, while longing for the summer, the cool caress of a breeze cutting through the
humid air. Something you know longer remember the feel of.
At this point, in Ottawa, Ontario I; Margaret Ross had spent months saving up and begging for a dog
of my own. Our red bungalow home my father inherited from his late parents that had moved him
from Halifax to Ottawa in the late fifties.
His parents were both graduates from the well know American school Harvard University where the

But I could pick any of the other five dogs jumping around in front of me.
One stood out, he was much more outgoing and curious than the others. Immediately he approached
us with excitement. Jumping at our shins, begging for pets as his long tail wagged wildly.
Immediately I knew he was meant to be mine. And he wanted to be mine just as much as I wanted
him. Picking him up and holding him, he had the softest fur I have ever felt. He was perfect.
Quickly money was exchanged as I held onto my new dog, and a new more boy–ish name was
thought over for him. Quickly it was settled on Charlie. In my family Charles is a family name
passed on down from my grandfather's side, the first name son was always named Charles and then
typically went by their middle name like John. This generation of Rosses a single boy wasn't born,
all my cousins were girls.
But now with this ownership of a male pomeranian, we finally had the first boy of this generation of
Rosses. Charles was just so fitting, and Charlie was perfect for the adorable red

Warren E Buffett, 2005 Essay
UV0016 Version 2.5 WARREN E. BUFFETT, 2005 On May 24, 2005, Warren E. Buffett, the
chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., announced that
MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, would acquire the
electric utility PacifiCorp. In Buffett's largest deal since 1998, and the second largest of his entire
career, MidAmerican would purchase PacifiCorp from its parent, Scottish Power plc, for $5.1 billion
in cash and $4.3 billion in liabilities and preferred stock. "The energy sector has long interested us,

What were Buffett's probable motives in the acquisition? What did Buffett's offer say about his

Would Berkshire's acquisition of PacifiCorp prove to be a success? How would Buffett define
success? Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Berkshire Hathaway was incorporated in 1889 as Berkshire
Cotton Manufacturing, and eventually grew to become one of New England's biggest textile
producers, accounting for 25% of the United States' cotton textile production. In 1955, Berkshire
merged with Hathaway Manufacturing and began a secular decline due to inflation, technological
change, and intensifying competition from foreign competitors. In 1965, Buffett and some partners
acquired control of Berkshire Hathaway, believing that its financial decline could be reversed. Over
the next 20 years, it became apparent that large capital investments would be required to remain
competitive and that even then the financial returns would be mediocre. Fortunately, the textile

The State Of The American Dog By Tom Junod
Dogs are what their owners make of them, they are shere products of their environments and feed
off of how their owners treat them. For example, in America pit bulls, over the years have been
portrayed as harmful or aggressive. These views have lead to manying uncompassionate acts
towards this lost breed. Such as, selling the dogs for drugs to people who could care less about them
to forcing pitbulls in harmful dog fights. In America's society today some often view pitbulls as just
a way of breeding dogs. This means that they essentially are not taking part in what it actually
means to have a pet. People are suppose to provide, feed, care, and love their dogs and in some
cases that's not their important objective. The underlying issue that ... Show more content on

I Am Owned By Three Dogs
As I like to say, I am owned by three dogs. Anybody who has dogs, knows people who have dogs,
has ever seen a dog, or even is aware that dogs exist, knows that dogs like to bark. Some dogs
naturally bark more than others, but I do believe I have three of the barkiest dogs on this planet. (Is
barkiest even a word? If not, it is now, because that 's what I have). My dogs like to bark whenever
anybody comes into the house, whether they are family or not. They bark when company goes out
the door. My dogs like to bark at neighbors walking down the sidewalk, and if those neighbors are
walking their dogs, they bark even louder! My dogs like to bark at small critters in the yard, when
the neighbor slams a car door shut, and when the washing machine back in my laundry room brakes
after the spin cycle. In effect, they think they must bark all the time. All this barking dog noise
becomes quite stressful. When my poor husband comes home from work, all the dogs come to greet
him, and Twix (a beagle/sheltie cross) is the worst of all. Being part beagle, she is quite vocal by
nature. She gets so excited whenever family comes home that she goes on a five–minute barking
spree. She was trained by her previous owner, my daughter–in–law, to respond to a "quiet"
command but it 's usually ineffective. She knows she 's supposed to shut up, but she just can 't
control her excitement. The other two dogs also understand the word "quiet" but they don 't listen
either. Martha is an anxious dog by

The Watergate Scandal Of America
The Watergate scandal was an event with many strong incidents in pre–scandal, present scandal, and
post–scandal. How could this scandal affect American politics? One event that is currently
happening right now because it's a result of the scandal and is affecting American politics is the loss
of trust in the government by the public. With conspiracy theories directed towards criminals and
Nixon running out of office, trust in the system was at an all–time low. Another effect of Watergate
is when the media increased its scrutiny of politics and politicians. Ever since the Watergate scandal,
the publishers of media have inflated and over exaggerated the news about Americas federal system
to try to be noticed or start a world controversy. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this period, a presidential election was seemed essential because the Vietnam War was taking
place which led the US to a harsh political divide. The harsh methods used in this campaign were
actually known as "illegal espionage". This lead to Nixon's group who reelected the president to
steel "copies of top–secret documents and bugged the office's phones" (Watergate: The Break–In).
This break in was known as a third–rate burglary attempt. Their attempt failed and the committee
came back to the building a few days later to barge right back in, but this time getting caught before
things got out of hand.
This scandal was attempted to be covered up but did not work. President Richard Nixon thought to
himself, if the media found out about this, they would blow the situation way out of proportion and
take it further then needed (which they did when they found out). Nixon also thought that if any
American citizen found out about this scandal, they would lose trust in politics and never be able to
rely on the governmental system. So the people that attempted to break into the system were offered
money to keep quiet and not tell any true stories to the media. Nixon gave speeches and
presentations on how the staff were not the crime committers and that the people who did it were
unknown. His voters and coworkers grew suspicious so they did a mini, untracked investigation.
They found tape recordings of every conversation made in the Oval office; if people got ahold of

Against Mandatory Vaccines
Vaccines are known for preventing disease, but could they be more dangerous than you know? Ever
since the creation of vaccines people have been arguing over whether their risks outweigh the
benefits. Supporters of vaccines believe that vaccines are safer than natural immunization and that
the approval process will eliminate all major side effects before it is released to the public.
Advocates of vaccination think that vaccines are still not safe, nor humane. They also believe that
mandatory vaccines infringe upon the freedom of people's bodies. It is also largely disputed whether
vaccines cause autism or not. While vaccines are considered safe by many, others believe that there
is more to vaccines than what we believe.
Vaccines are substances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Immunization through vaccines produces the same immunity as natural infections without having to
withstand the disease itself. Some vaccines even offer a better response than contracting the disease
("The Benefits of Vaccine"). The Chickenpox vaccine has been studied a lot involving the side–
effects in comparison to those of contracting the disease. A child has a .25 percent chance of being
hospitalized after catching chickenpox while they would have a .05 percent chance of minor
infection after the vaccine . While death rarely occurs from either form of immunization, it was far
more likely to occur from the infection rather than the vaccine. Of course, the risk is extremely
small in both instances, but the slight edge of chickenpox is scary enough for most parents to
vaccinate their children. Shingles is something that many people are scared of contracting as they
get older. Although the chickenpox vaccine has not been available for long enough to see how many
vaccinated people develop shingles at any point in their lives, the contraction of shingles in children
post–vaccine has been studied. Shingles is 39 percent less likely to occur in children or teens who
were vaccinated than those who naturally transmitted the disease. (Moyer, Melinda Wenner).
Chickenpox is just one example of a vaccine being safer than the natural infection. Although small,
the difference in risk between the two ways of immunization is often plenty to encourage parents to
vaccinate their

Economic Inequality In The United States
"With more attention being paid to economic inequality in the United States, it's also worth looking
at how the nation compares globally", says Drew Desilver. People tend to want to be wealthy like
the upper class because we fear poverty, when in reality it is one of the highest global risk concerns.
Reasons are led to believe because of technology, changes in organizations and jobs, and the
differences in education. Poverty is the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount.
The Census Bureau uses two similar versions of money salary thresholds that fluctuate by household
size and distribution to determine who is in poverty. If a household total income is less than the
appropriate households threshold, then every individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ADDRESSING WAUSEON CITY COUNCIL SPEECH TRANSCRIPT 12/15/2014
INTRODUCTION My name is Tasha Grieser, a certified professional dog trainer and resident of
Fulton County with more than 15 years experience training dogs and studying dog behavior. Thank
you for giving me the opportunity to speak here tonight. I am a former dog bite victim. When I was
a child, I was bit by a chained, untrained, under socialized, unneutered, neglected dog in my
neighbors back yard. I was playing tag unsupervised with the neighbors child and ran just inside the
reach of where their dog was chained up. The dog grabbed my arm and shook it like a rag doll, and I
required many stitches. Why I believe my story is important is because its a perfect example of ...

There are aggressive dogs in any breed of dog and all breeds of dogs are capable of becoming
dangerous in the wrong hands. The factors that cause dangerous dogs include: the socialization and
training dog has had genetic disposition their health status their reproductive status the quality of
ownership they receive and victims behavior that usually provokes a dog bite. INHERITABILITY
AND SEVERITY OF CANINE AGGRESSION
Across the nation, media outlines will read, "Pit bull mauling", used to scare people into enacting
legislation to discriminate against the breed. Mr. Banister has been quoted in the Toledo Blade and
the Crescent News stating that its not so much about how often they bite, but when pit bulls bite, its
more much more severe. He shared a poorly structured "study" of severity of pit bull bites with you.
In "Mortality, mauling, and maiming by vicious dogs", they treated 228 patients. Of those 228, only
82 identified the breed of dog involved. Of those that reported a breed, only 29 were bit by pit bulls.
They found that compared with attacks of other identified breeds of dogs, attacks by pit bulls were
more severe. There are problems with this study: The study did not include the other 146 people
treated due to lack of ability to identify the breed, only using 64% of their targeted population. This
would severely skew the results.

Symptoms And Treatment Of Heart Disease
Heart disease is not as rare of a disease found in dogs as many think. About 10% of dogs are
diagnosed with heart disease at some point in their life (Tudor, 2012). It is not limited to only one
breed or size but instead it affects a wide range of canines. There are two main categories of heart
disease, congenital and acquired.
Congenital is the type of heart disease that is acquired at birth or is in some way hereditary.
Acquired heart disease is more common in older animals, or animals with injury and infection of the
heart (Tudor, 2012). The most common acquired heart disease is chronic vulvular disease. Because
the heart is so important to life, heart disease should not be taken lightly. The heart pumps blood
containing oxygen and other essential nutrients through the body to the organs and the cells. Most
conditions that affect the heart involve decreased effectiveness of the ability of the heart to pump
blood through the body (Tudor, 2012).
The heart is a very detrimental organ to the body not only because it helps the body with oxygen,
but also the blood supply goes straight to the other organs that are essential for life such as the liver
and the kidneys. If the heart is not working properly it is likely to cause problems in the other
organs. As it is not common for animals to get organ transplants, if the kidneys shut down due to
heart problems that creates a whole new problem. Although it attributes to only a small portion of
diagnosed heart disease cases it is

How Did Richard Nixon Checkers Speech
On September 23, 1952, the Republican Vice Presidential candidate, Richard Nixon gave a speech
famously known as the "Checkers" or the "Fund" speech. The speech addressed the controversy of a
slush fund of $18,000 dollars that had been donated from his political supporters for his personal
use. The accusation of the slush fund caused doubt about Nixon's position on the Republican ticket.
In response, Nixon broadcasted a thirty–minute speech that included Nixon defending his
innocence, attacking those who supported the accusations, and urged the American people to believe
in his innocence so he could remain on the Republican ballot. The main claim in Nixon's "Checkers"
speech was that he was innocent from accepting funding for his personal ... Show more content on

Puppy Mills Ethical
Is It Ethical? All around the world, dogs suffer daily from not just their owners, but from their own
bodies. Inbreeding and extreme breed standards lower the quality of life for purebred dogs (Rooney
and Sargan). Puppy mills, despite government crackdown, continue to operate and sell ill, disfigured
dogs (Solotaroff). Breeding purebred dogs only for profit and not for the wellbeing of the dog, is
unethical, because of puppy mills, dog defects due to this kind of breeding, and dog quality of life.
Firstly, the number one reason why purebred breeding purely for profit is unethical: puppy mills. A
puppy mill, as defined by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), are "commercial

As anyone who has seen a televised dog show can attest, some dogs are deformed in disturbing
ways. One might look at the "excessively wrinkled skin of the Chinese Shar–Pei," the "the flat face
of a bulldog," or the "low–slung eyelids of a Bloodhound" (PBS), and think, "That can not be
healthy." The fact of the matter is that these deformities are far from healthy. As the Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) points out, the Shar–Pei's skin (due to it's "excessively wrinkled"
nature) is prone to skin infections, the Bloodhound's droopy eyes are practically magnets for eye
infection, and the Bulldog's face is so squished that it can never breathe correctly. While these
deformities may be more obvious, overly large or small pedigree dogs have their own slew of health
problems (Rooney and Sargan). As Rooney and Sargan disclose, very small dogs (known as toy
breeds) often have dislocated kneecaps, heart problems, and trouble staying warm. Big dogs, such as
Great Danes, can suffer from heat prostration and orthopedic issues (Rooney and Sargan).
According to Rooney and Sargan, almost every purebred breed of dog is more likely to have at least
one genetic disease compared to mixed breeds. However, physical problems are not the only thing
purebred dogs have to face: behavioral problems are also more prevalent in certain breeds (Rooney
and Sargan). Rooney and Sargan reveal that

Richard Nixon Checkers Speech On September 23, 1952 Richard Milhous Nixon sat down to
address the largest television audience ever amassed by a politician this was no ordinary political

only clearing his name of the allegation that he had received illegal campaign funds, but he also had
to present himself as a viable asset to the Republican ticket. Nixon bared his heart to the American

The purpose of Nixon's speech must also be examined in order to make a comprehensive analysis of
the speech. In his autobiography Nixon described the three criteria his speech must meet in order to
convey his purpose: "(1) [it must] answer the immediate attack by explaining and defending the
fund, (2) ward off further allegations by showing that he did not accrue personal profit, and (3)
launch a political counterattack" (176). Nixon used these guide–lining principles to steer his way in
the short 48–hour period he had to compose his speech. The principal way these purposes were
achieved was through the application of the three Aristotelian modes of proof: ethos, pathos and
logos (Cathcart 45). The primary Aristotelian proof Nixon used to appeal to his audience was ethos,
or credibility. In a sense, the purpose of the "Checkers Speech" was to reaffirm Nixon's status as a
reputable politician the public could put their faith in. Robert Cathcart more precisely defined ethos
as "the image that receivers have of the communicator as an expert source with a capacity for
leadership and decision making and as one who can be trusted". Nixon's credibility was gone as far
as the American public was concerned until he cleared his name of the allegations he had used
$16,000 of private funds given to him by outside donors. In order to prove his credibility Nixon

Dog Grooming Essay
Be prepared
All dogs need grooming, but some dogs need more grooming than others.
Baxter's owners did not realize that their dog should be combed frequently and completely to
prevent kinks and knots caused by intertwining of hairs or by dirt, grit, or vegetative matter in the
coat. Mats can pull tender skin and cause pain and lead to hot spots or wounds to irritated skin and
eventual infection, general skin outbreaks, or fungus or insect invasion.
Shaving may be the only solution for felted mats, but it must be done carefully to avoid nicking the
dog or further irritating already inflamed skin.
Breeds that need frequent grooming to prevent mats and keep their coats healthy include Cocker
Spaniel, Afghan Hound, Otterhound, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before bathing, clear any mats or tangles from Ginger's coat.
Teach her to stand in the tub, then add warm or tepid water.
Soak her to the skin, lather, then rinse thoroughly to prevent dull, sticky coat and dry skin.
Take care to keep water and soap out of her eyes and ears and clean her face and the insides of her
ears with a sponge or washcloth.
Daily examination
Even if Ginger doesn't need daily grooming, check her thoroughly to make sure she has no cuts,
sores, fleas, rashes, bumps, ticks, or hitchhikers in her coat or dirt in her ears. Remove fleas with a
fine–toothed comb and drop them into a container of soapy water. Remove embedded ticks with
tweezers or protected fingers and drop them in a vial of alcohol. (Grasp the tick body, rock it back
and forth, then pull firmly.) Carefully remove vegetative matter such as grass awns, seed casings, or
thorny twigs with fingers or comb.
During this daily exam, check Ginger's feet and ears, look at her teeth, and feel for cuts or tumors.
Shedding
Dog hair grows and dies just as human hair does. Some dogs — particularly hard–coated terriers and
Poodles — hang on to their dead hair, thus requiring special grooming to remove it. Other dogs give
it up quite readily, all over the house. Double–coated dogs generally drop their soft undercoats twice
a year and lose their guard hairs once a year, although some individual dogs might shed constantly

Richard Nixon Checkers Speech Analysis
Guilty or Innocent:Richard Nixon's Checkers Richard Nixon successfully used Pathos throughout
his "Checkers Speech" to appeal to the emotions of the American people. Nixon, more commonly
known for being one of the most hated presidents that the United States has endured, is
exceptionally brilliant. He used technology to help him plead his innocence, as he televised his big
"Checkers Speech" for the entire United States to hear. While being accused of accepting millions of
dollars and putting them into a "slush fund", Nixon stood firm and exclaimed to the public, " I want
to make this particularly clear –– that no contributor to this fund, no contributor to any of my
campaigns, has ever received any consideration that he would not have received as an ordinary
constituent" (par. 6)that he had no part in anything fraudulent. However he does admit to taking one
"gift" his Cocker Spaniel named Checkers. Other than Checkers, which he receives nor gives any
favoritism for accepting, he is an "honest, hardworking" man. He stated that he did not care for the
opinion of the public "I just want to say this, right now, that regardless of what they say about it,
we're gonna keep it" (par. 26) because his children fell in love with it, and he couldn't bring himself
to take it away from them. Throughout Nixon's speech, he presents the illusion that he is in fact
"broke", thus appealing to poverty. He gives multiple examples of his financial situations by stating,
" I owe 4500 dollars to the Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C., with interest 4 and 1/2 percent. I owe
3500 dollars to my parents, and the interest on that loan, which I pay regularly, because it's the part
of the savings they made through the years they were working so hard –– I pay regularly 4 percent
interest. And then I have a 500 dollar loan, which I have on my life insurance." (par. 23) which also
establishes credibility with his audience. He also says, " But Pat and I have the satisfaction that
every dime that we've got is honestly ours. I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But
she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything"
(par. 25) showing that money is not the reason he is running

Swaffham, Norfolk, England. The rules have not changed a great deal since this time. "Unlike
Elizabeth, King 1625) preferred hunting to hard work. He was an avid fan of greyhound coursing.
He brought his greyhounds to the village of Fordham near the border of Suffolk and Cambridge.
This private competition between the king's greyhounds observed by James and his court. He
enjoyed the coursing there so much that he built a hunting lodge in Newmarket. To maintain the
quality of hunting, in 1619 he ordered the release of 100 hares and 100 partridges every year at
Newmarket. Races between the horses because his followers became as important as the matches
between the king's greyhounds. William Shakespeare (1564–1616) mentioned greyhounds in a
number of his plays. . Henry V Henry's speech to his troops just before the Battle of Harfleur
compares people to coursing greyhounds. The new study now suggests that early guinea pigs
provided more companionship.

the Spanish and English empires in America had more similarities than differences. Assess the
validity of this generalization. Response Strategy It is important to develop a clear thesis on the
validity of the statement at the outset of the essay. A good essay could be developed on either side of
the issue or in support of a middle–of –the–road position. Supporting paragraphs should be

Mercantilist ideas emphasized that nations should strive toward economic self–sufficiency and that
the power of a nation should be measured by the amount of its gold and silver reserves. Ultimately, a
nation should arrange to produce everything it needed for its own citizens and sell surpluses to for
hard currency. This metal reserve, in turn, could be used in emergency situations to pay for wars or
solve shortages. Colonies, like those England had in North America, played an important part in this
economic equation. They could help England become self–sufficient by producing things that could
not be made or grown there such as tobacco, sugar, and tall masts for ships. Colonists could also
provide a market for British goods, particularly manufactured products, such as woolen cloth or
beaver hats. This meant that the home economy in England could become more fully developed,
while the colonial economies were relegated to a role of supplying raw materials. To insure that the
American colonies would contribute to this overall sense of British wealth, various Navigation Acts
were passed beginning in 1650 to regulate trade between the colonies, England, and the rest of the
world. In many cases, ships carrying American products to other European countries had to stop in
England first to pay duties before continuing onward. Also, goods traveling to and from America

The Issue Of First Amendment Law
For many years, there has been a struggle of protection and privacy between government rules and
citizen freedoms under the First Amendment. The controversial issues that fall under First
Amendment law have been disputed continuously. Because the First Amendment protects citizens
against government interference of freedom of expression, the boundaries of this rule have always
been pushed. One of the most common, yet controversial, issues of First Amendment law is the
subject of copyright and infringement. Although the subject may not seem major at first, many
different issues and controversies have risen and become more common than ever over the years.
The issues that have become pertinent to this subject are endless, including trademark infringement,
piracy, theft, fraud, plagiarism, and many more. With the coming of age and advancement of
technology, these cases have become more common and appear more often than ever before.
Government officials have always been strict about copyright rulings, and have tried to deliver fair
and just rulings for both parties involved under First Amendment rules. Because the owner's work
and material is protected under the First Amendment, it gets tricky when involving another party
that can claim the same work of art. In short, the definition of copyright has always been cut and
dry: allowing owners of creative works the right to control and profit from their creations. It is
basically recognized as a form of property ownership.

Why Should Vaccines Be Required By Law
Should Vaccines be Required by Law?
Introduction
The Center for Disease Control estimated that 732,000 American children have been saved by
vaccines in the last ten years.
Vaccines should be required by law so that we can protect ourselves by building our immunity to
preventable illnesses, in an easy, quick, and inexpensive fashion, helping stop major epidemics, and
in conclusion, save lives.
Body
Con 1 – Vaccines weaken a person 's immune system, and can in cases make someone ill.
Vaccines are sometimes unreasonable because our immune system can defend itself, and at time can
make things worse.
Another problem with vaccines is that majority of the time a child 's immune systems can deal with
most infections naturally (Vaccines ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were also similar cases in Japan and Sweden (Turkington and Ashby). Experts came to the
conclusion that the lack of vaccines brought back pertussis in all three cases (Turkington and
Ashby).
We don 't notice the effects of vaccines because many of the illnesses they prevent are now rare,
with their effects now forgotten (Kwok). A vaccine is a mix of potentially infectious agents, or some
noninfectious part, given to build up a resistance (Stratton).
There are four main groups of vaccines: those containing living infectious organisms, those
containing infectious agents killed by physical or chemical means, those containing living
organisms, and ones containing parts of microorganisms (Stratton).
The vaccinated person 's immune system then learns to recognize the bacteria as a threat and
develops defenses against that specific bacteria so when an individual is exposed to the live version
of the bacteria, his or her body is prepared to defend itself. ("New Vaccines may be cheaper, work
better.")
Con 2 – Complications to the vaccines, and the possible cause of illness or reactions can be risky.
Vaccinations are not without controversy. Some parents worry about the possible side effects of
vaccines can potentially harm their children.
Who should not be vaccinated: anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to a previous shot,
anyone with a severe allergy to eggs should not receive MMR, flu, or yellow fever

Richard Milhous Nixon Rhetorical Analysis
Brandon Wagner Professor C. English 124 4 March 2016 Checkers ` Richard Milhous Nixon was
the 37th President of the United States serving from 1969 to 1974, and who also, became the first
and only U.S. president to resign from office. In 1952 Nixon previously was elected as vice
president to the former Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower despite his prior agreement to
support Earl Warren, former governor of California. As Warren supporters were outraged from his
failed attempt to gain the nomination, supporters now questioned Nixon's public integrity. This
event was just a stepping stone to a following incident that would jeopardize his whole political
career. One resentful supporter located in Pasadena California, accused him ... Show more content

This new use of technology in somewhat way gave him the advantage of support across the nation.
The set was simple: Nixon sat behind a desk, his hands loosely clasped over his notes, and Pat
Nixon was several feet away in a chair that seemed too large for her. The most obvious appeal that
Nixon was trying to make to the people was an appeal to the audience's pathos, and the use of the
rhetoric tool called the straw man technique which he really drove home through his use of his dog
Checkers. After being attacked for receiving and accepting gifts along the campaign trail from his
supporters and corporations he admits to accepting one gift, a little cocker spaniel that his six–year–
old daughter named Checkers, as guilty as he would have admitted to accepting millions of dollars.
By apposing the thought that he was taking money and other dubious gifts with the gift of an
adorable new puppy that "a man down in Texas" sent for his children, Nixon creates the sense that
he has been victimized for accepting a kind gesture. He is distracting the audience's attention to
believe that the only gift he is being accused of taking is this dog, and he is asking them to judge if
that is wrong in their own minds. Nixon built a straw man, the real issue at stake is the fund, not a
cocker spaniel. He is also appealing to the familiar feeling of any parent who have ever had kids
who want a dog by stating "the kids, like all kids, love the dog" to prove that he really is just a
family man who is just like them. Finally he ends his portion on Checkers by comically suggesting
that no matter what people say he's going to keep the dog which creates the sense that that was the
extent of his crime and to prove that he didn't do anything wrong. It also serves as a jab to those
accusing him of illegal activities and an assurance to

Speech : An Analysis Of Richard Nixon's Speech
Prior to the 1952 presidential election, vice–presidential candidate Richard Nixon confronted a
selective political persecution. He was targeted, possibly by those within his own party, by the
drudging up and the exposing of a slush fund, in which Nixon used to pay for extra governmental
expenses. Instead by heeding to the political pressure and removing himself from the ticket, like
those who created the scandal would have wanted, Richard Nixon delivered an impeccable thirty–
minute speech, in which he not only defended and cleared himself, but he also turned the tables on
his Democratic opponents. Nixon's "Checkers" speech, named after the Nixon family dog, is widely
regarded as one of his best. However, it is far less well–known that ... Show more content on

No, not content with that, they now include my little dog, Fala. Well, of course, I don't resent
attacks, and my family doesn't resent attacks, but Fala does resent them. You know, Fala is Scotch,
and being a Scottie, as soon as he learned that the Republican fiction writers in Congress and out
had concocted a story that I had left him behind on the Aleutian Islands and had sent a destroyer
back to find him – at the cost to the taxpayers of two or three, or eight or twenty million dollars – his
scotch soul was furious" (Roosevelt). Here, President Roosevelt is able to portray his Republican
opponents as petty and foolish by using the voice and disapproval of Fala, the dog. He is also able to
use such a ridiculous story, making Republicans look even more idiotic. Richard Nixon also uses his
dog, Checkers, in the his speech as a comedic way of explaining the ridiculousness of his selective
persecution. Nixon says after going through a drawn–out list of "everything I've earned, everything
I've spent, everything I own" (Nixon), "One other thing I probably should tell you, because if I don't
they'll probably be saying this about me, too. We did get something, a gift, after the election. A man
down in Texas heard Pat on the radio mention the fact that our two youngsters would like to have a
dog. And believe it or not, the day before we left on this campaign trip we got a message from

Gone to the Dogs Today, the United States of America is hardly "United". Divisions between race,
religion and breed has left the country scrambling for answers. The answers themselves, are not
always the right ones. Breed Specific Legislation are laws enacted in states and countries across the
world that place bans and restrictions on certain breeds including Rottweilers, Boxers, and Pit Bulls.
Several of these dogs are euthanized and ripped out of their homes if their owners do not fill out the
right paperwork, with no reason other than their the dog's' bloodline. These laws, are not only
discriminatory against the breed, but built in fear of the unknown mind of the dogs themselves.

One of the biggest dog busts of the century was in 2007. The man in charge's name was Michael
Vick, a quarterback football player in the NFL. Under the name "Bad Newz Kennels", dogs were
beaten, murdered, and gambled on. The dogs found alive were some of the most damaged possible.
Missing parts of their jaws, lost eyesight, or non existent limbs, one would wonder why they kept
going, striving for acceptance from their owner. These dogs, to the public seemed dangerous, after
all they had killed their entire lives. However, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary was willing to take up
the task of these gorgeous animals, ultimately saving their lives. The sanctuary took in 22 dogs, 10
of them, now adopted and living in homes of their own.Through rehabilitation the dogs were taught
how to trust, interact and most importantly what love truly is with different trainers daily. Even the
dogs who can not be adopted out are by any means not dangerous. Meryl, had been one of the dogs
found who was deemed dangerous by the state, meaning she could not be adopted out to a home.
Nonetheless, when walking into her kennel, dangerous is the last word you would use to describe
her. One of her trainers remarks, "She really doesn't mind new people.... She's very happy and
loving. I feel totally comfortable with her. I can grab and kiss her." As she embraces Meryl, "I am
building a relationship, ...She needed to see that when

Pet Food Recall Of Pet Pets
I remember the first night the news announced the pet food recall. I jumped up and got online
quickly to make sure the food I feed my pets was not on the list. Thank goodness it wasn 't. But that
doesn 't mean that I don 't still worry about it. I 'm still feeding them the same food, but I am
watching my pets very closely for any abnormal behavior at all. I 'm sure many pet owners are doing
the same. But I did decide I could do one thing for my dogs and that is to make them some dog
biscuits myself. That way, I know what is going into the ingredients and if anything is tainted, it will
make me sick, too. Most of the ingredients for these homemade dog biscuits are items already in my
kitchen. A few years ago, my sister had given me a dog biscuit set. I 've used it a couple of times,
then put it up and forgot about it. Now, I 've pulled it out again. The company 's name is "You Bake
'Em Dog Biscuits" with P.C. Edge 's "World–Famous Recipes". It came with three cookie cutters: a
fire hydrant, a bone and of course a cat. It also included a mini–book with tips on caring for your
dog and several recipes. Making them is simple and quick, so I thought I 'd share a few of the
recipes. Dog Treat Special (10 bark rating) 1 lb. raw beef liver, sliced 3 cups water 1 cup self–rising
cornmeal mix or rice flour 1/4 cup quick cooking oatmeal 1/2 cup whole–wheat flour 1/2 cup all–

Life Story Of Hanah Watts

  • 1. Life Story Of Hanah Watts I'm certain that I have always loved dogs. Even though I was terrified of them until I was 5, I have always loved dogs. There's something about dogs that you can't compare with humans. It's like they will always be your best friend, always. And that my friends, is the life story of Hanah Watts. Oh, and there's some other stuff too. I was born in Columbia, SC on May 2, 2002. I have a little brother named Nelson and an American Cocker Spaniel named Gabby. I went to Brennen Elementary School in grades k–5. I believe it was in 3rd grade that I realized I read more than everyone else, and 5th when I realized I was a fully–fledged fangirl. I started dancing when I was three or four, and am still dancing to this day. From September to December my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To a veterinarian that spent their career living in North Bay, Ontario. One of the coldest populated places in northern Ontario, winters and snowstorms that beat down onto you until all you feel is cold, while longing for the summer, the cool caress of a breeze cutting through the humid air. Something you know longer remember the feel of. At this point, in Ottawa, Ontario I; Margaret Ross had spent months saving up and begging for a dog of my own. Our red bungalow home my father inherited from his late parents that had moved him from Halifax to Ottawa in the late fifties. His parents were both graduates from the well know American school Harvard University where the small ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Picking him up and holding him, he had the softest fur I have ever felt. He was perfect. Quickly money was exchanged as I held onto my new dog, and a new more boy–ish name was thought over for him. Quickly it was settled on Charlie. In my family Charles is a family name passed on down from my grandfather's side, the first name son was always named Charles and then typically went by their middle name like John. Buffett, the chairperson and chief executive officer (CEO) of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., announced that MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, would acquire the electric utility PacifiCorp. In Buffett's largest deal since 1998, and the second largest of his entire career, MidAmerican would purchase PacifiCorp from its parent, Scottish Power plc, for $5.1 billion in cash and $4.3 billion in liabilities and preferred stock. What were Buffett's probable motives in the acquisition? What did Buffett's offer say about his valuation of PacifiCorp, and how would it compare with valuations for other regulated utilities? Would Berkshire's acquisition of PacifiCorp prove to be a success? How would Buffett define success? Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Berkshire Hathaway was incorporated in 1889 as Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing, and eventually grew to become one of New England's biggest textile producers, accounting for 25% of the United States' cotton textile production. In 1955, Berkshire merged with Hathaway Manufacturing and began a secular decline due to inflation, technological change, and intensifying competition from foreign competitors. In 1965, Buffett and some partners acquired control of Berkshire Hathaway, believing that its financial decline could be reversed. Over the next 20 years, it became apparent that large capital investments would be required to remain competitive and that even then the financial returns would be mediocre. Fortunately, the textile group generated Berkshire Hathaway "Class A" vs. S&P 500 Composite Index enough cash in the initial $100,000 years to permit the firm to purchase two Berkshire Hathaway Inc. • 9. The State Of The American Dog By Tom Junod Dogs are what their owners make of them, they are shere products of their environments and feed off of how their owners treat them. For example, in America pit bulls, over the years have been portrayed as harmful or aggressive. These views have lead to manying uncompassionate acts towards this lost breed. Such as, selling the dogs for drugs to people who could care less about them to forcing pitbulls in harmful dog fights. In America's society today some often view pitbulls as just a way of breeding dogs. This means that they essentially are not taking part in what it actually means to have a pet. People are suppose to provide, feed, care, and love their dogs and in some cases that's not their important objective. The underlying issue that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. I Am Owned By Three Dogs As I like to say, I am owned by three dogs. Anybody who has dogs, knows people who have dogs, has ever seen a dog, or even is aware that dogs exist, knows that dogs like to bark. Some dogs naturally bark more than others, but I do believe I have three of the barkiest dogs on this planet. (Is barkiest even a word? If not, it is now, because that 's what I have). My dogs like to bark whenever anybody comes into the house, whether they are family or not. They bark when company goes out the door. My dogs like to bark at neighbors walking down the sidewalk, and if those neighbors are walking their dogs, they bark even louder! My dogs like to bark at small critters in the yard, when the neighbor slams a car door shut, and when the washing machine back in my laundry room brakes after the spin cycle. In effect, they think they must bark all the time. All this barking dog noise becomes quite stressful. When my poor husband comes home from work, all the dogs come to greet him, and Twix (a beagle/sheltie cross) is the worst of all. Being part beagle, she is quite vocal by nature. She gets so excited whenever family comes home that she goes on a five–minute barking spree. She was trained by her previous owner, my daughter–in–law, to respond to a "quiet" command but it 's usually ineffective. She knows she 's supposed to shut up, but she just can 't control her excitement. The other two dogs also understand the word "quiet" but they don 't listen either. Martha is an anxious dog by ... • 13. The Watergate Scandal Of America The Watergate scandal was an event with many strong incidents in pre–scandal, present scandal, and post–scandal. How could this scandal affect American politics? One event that is currently happening right now because it's a result of the scandal and is affecting American politics is the loss of trust in the government by the public. With conspiracy theories directed towards criminals and Nixon running out of office, trust in the system was at an all–time low. Another effect of Watergate is when the media increased its scrutiny of politics and politicians. Ever since the Watergate scandal, the publishers of media have inflated and over exaggerated the news about Americas federal system to try to be noticed or start a world controversy. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this period, a presidential election was seemed essential because the Vietnam War was taking place which led the US to a harsh political divide. The harsh methods used in this campaign were actually known as "illegal espionage". This lead to Nixon's group who reelected the president to steel "copies of top–secret documents and bugged the office's phones" (Watergate: The Break–In). This break in was known as a third–rate burglary attempt. Their attempt failed and the committee came back to the building a few days later to barge right back in, but this time getting caught before things got out of hand. This scandal was attempted to be covered up but did not work. President Richard Nixon thought to himself, if the media found out about this, they would blow the situation way out of proportion and take it further then needed (which they did when they found out). Nixon also thought that if any American citizen found out about this scandal, they would lose trust in politics and never be able to rely on the governmental system. So the people that attempted to break into the system were offered money to keep quiet and not tell any true stories to the media. Nixon gave speeches and presentations on how the staff were not the crime committers and that the people who did it were unknown. His voters and coworkers grew suspicious so they did a mini, untracked investigation. They found tape recordings of every conversation made in the Oval office; if people got ahold of those ... • 15. Against Mandatory Vaccines Vaccines are known for preventing disease, but could they be more dangerous than you know? Ever since the creation of vaccines people have been arguing over whether their risks outweigh the benefits. Supporters of vaccines believe that vaccines are safer than natural immunization and that the approval process will eliminate all major side effects before it is released to the public. Advocates of vaccination think that vaccines are still not safe, nor humane. They also believe that mandatory vaccines infringe upon the freedom of people's bodies. It is also largely disputed whether vaccines cause autism or not. While vaccines are considered safe by many, others believe that there is more to vaccines than what we believe. Vaccines are substances ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Immunization through vaccines produces the same immunity as natural infections without having to withstand the disease itself. Some vaccines even offer a better response than contracting the disease ("The Benefits of Vaccine"). The Chickenpox vaccine has been studied a lot involving the side– effects in comparison to those of contracting the disease. A child has a .25 percent chance of being hospitalized after catching chickenpox while they would have a .05 percent chance of minor infection after the vaccine . While death rarely occurs from either form of immunization, it was far more likely to occur from the infection rather than the vaccine. Of course, the risk is extremely small in both instances, but the slight edge of chickenpox is scary enough for most parents to vaccinate their children. Shingles is something that many people are scared of contracting as they get older. Although the chickenpox vaccine has not been available for long enough to see how many vaccinated people develop shingles at any point in their lives, the contraction of shingles in children post–vaccine has been studied. Shingles is 39 percent less likely to occur in children or teens who were vaccinated than those who naturally transmitted the disease. (Moyer, Melinda Wenner). Chickenpox is just one example of a vaccine being safer than the natural infection. Although small, the difference in risk between the two ways of immunization is often plenty to encourage parents to vaccinate their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Economic Inequality In The United States "With more attention being paid to economic inequality in the United States, it's also worth looking at how the nation compares globally", says Drew Desilver. People tend to want to be wealthy like the upper class because we fear poverty, when in reality it is one of the highest global risk concerns. Reasons are led to believe because of technology, changes in organizations and jobs, and the differences in education. Poverty is the state of being inferior in quality or insufficient in amount. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak here tonight. I am a former dog bite victim. When I was a child, I was bit by a chained, untrained, under socialized, unneutered, neglected dog in my neighbors back yard. Mr. Banister has been quoted in the Toledo Blade and the Crescent News stating that its not so much about how often they bite, but when pit bulls bite, its more much more severe. He shared a poorly structured "study" of severity of pit bull bites with you. In "Mortality, mauling, and maiming by vicious dogs", they treated 228 patients. Of those 228, only 82 identified the breed of dog involved. Of those that reported a breed, only 29 were bit by pit bulls. They found that compared with attacks of other identified breeds of dogs, attacks by pit bulls were more severe. • 21. Symptoms And Treatment Of Heart Disease Heart disease is not as rare of a disease found in dogs as many think. About 10% of dogs are diagnosed with heart disease at some point in their life (Tudor, 2012). It is not limited to only one breed or size but instead it affects a wide range of canines. There are two main categories of heart disease, congenital and acquired. Congenital is the type of heart disease that is acquired at birth or is in some way hereditary. Acquired heart disease is more common in older animals, or animals with injury and infection of the heart (Tudor, 2012). The most common acquired heart disease is chronic vulvular disease. Because the heart is so important to life, heart disease should not be taken lightly. The heart pumps blood containing oxygen and other essential nutrients through the body to the organs and the cells. Most conditions that affect the heart involve decreased effectiveness of the ability of the heart to pump blood through the body (Tudor, 2012). The heart is a very detrimental organ to the body not only because it helps the body with oxygen, but also the blood supply goes straight to the other organs that are essential for life such as the liver and the kidneys. If the heart is not working properly it is likely to cause problems in the other organs. As it is not common for animals to get organ transplants, if the kidneys shut down due to heart problems that creates a whole new problem. The speech addressed the controversy of a slush fund of $18,000 dollars that had been donated from his political supporters for his personal use. The accusation of the slush fund caused doubt about Nixon's position on the Republican ticket. In response, Nixon broadcasted a thirty–minute speech that included Nixon defending his innocence, attacking those who supported the accusations, and urged the American people to believe in his innocence so he could remain on the Republican ballot. Inbreeding and extreme breed standards lower the quality of life for purebred dogs (Rooney and Sargan). Puppy mills, despite government crackdown, continue to operate and sell ill, disfigured dogs (Solotaroff). Breeding purebred dogs only for profit and not for the wellbeing of the dog, is unethical, because of puppy mills, dog defects due to this kind of breeding, and dog quality of life. As anyone who has seen a televised dog show can attest, some dogs are deformed in disturbing ways. One might look at the "excessively wrinkled skin of the Chinese Shar–Pei," the "the flat face of a bulldog," or the "low–slung eyelids of a Bloodhound" (PBS), and think, "That can not be healthy." The fact of the matter is that these deformities are far from healthy. As the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) points out, the Shar–Pei's skin (due to it's "excessively wrinkled" nature) is prone to skin infections, the Bloodhound's droopy eyes are practically magnets for eye infection, and the Bulldog's face is so squished that it can never breathe correctly. While these deformities may be more obvious, overly large or small pedigree dogs have their own slew of health problems (Rooney and Sargan). As Rooney and Sargan disclose, very small dogs (known as toy breeds) often have dislocated kneecaps, heart problems, and trouble staying warm. Big dogs, such as Great Danes, can suffer from heat prostration and orthopedic issues (Rooney and Sargan). • 31. Nixon Checkers Speech Richard Nixon Checkers Speech On September 23, 1952 Richard Milhous Nixon sat down to address the largest television audience ever amassed by a politician this was no ordinary political speech. Nixon's future in politics was on the line. In one speech Nixon had the daunting task of not only clearing his name of the allegation that he had received illegal campaign funds, but he also had to present himself as a viable asset to the Republican ticket. Nixon bared his heart to the American people, and in turn was applauded for his honesty and good character. Nixon's speech was met with nearly unanimous acceptance and praise. But, audience acceptance alone is not what makes a speech unforgettable or worth writing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of Nixon's speech must also be examined in order to make a comprehensive analysis of the speech. In his autobiography Nixon described the three criteria his speech must meet in order to convey his purpose: "(1) [it must] answer the immediate attack by explaining and defending the fund, (2) ward off further allegations by showing that he did not accrue personal profit, and (3) launch a political counterattack" (176). Nixon used these guide–lining principles to steer his way in the short 48–hour period he had to compose his speech. The principal way these purposes were achieved was through the application of the three Aristotelian modes of proof: ethos, pathos and logos (Cathcart 45). The primary Aristotelian proof Nixon used to appeal to his audience was ethos, or credibility. In a sense, the purpose of the "Checkers Speech" was to reaffirm Nixon's status as a reputable politician the public could put their faith in. Robert Cathcart more precisely defined ethos as "the image that receivers have of the communicator as an expert source with a capacity for leadership and decision making and as one who can be trusted". Nixon's credibility was gone as far as the American public was concerned until he cleared his name of the allegations he had used $16,000 of private funds given to him by outside donors. Baxter's owners did not realize that their dog should be combed frequently and completely to prevent kinks and knots caused by intertwining of hairs or by dirt, grit, or vegetative matter in the coat. Mats can pull tender skin and cause pain and lead to hot spots or wounds to irritated skin and eventual infection, general skin outbreaks, or fungus or insect invasion. Daily examination Even if Ginger doesn't need daily grooming, check her thoroughly to make sure she has no cuts, sores, fleas, rashes, bumps, ticks, or hitchhikers in her coat or dirt in her ears. • 35. Richard Nixon Checkers Speech Analysis Guilty or Innocent:Richard Nixon's Checkers Richard Nixon successfully used Pathos throughout his "Checkers Speech" to appeal to the emotions of the American people. Nixon, more commonly known for being one of the most hated presidents that the United States has endured, is exceptionally brilliant. He used technology to help him plead his innocence, as he televised his big "Checkers Speech" for the entire United States to hear. While being accused of accepting millions of dollars and putting them into a "slush fund", Nixon stood firm and exclaimed to the public, " I want to make this particularly clear –– that no contributor to this fund, no contributor to any of my campaigns, has ever received any consideration that he would not have received as an ordinary constituent" (par. 6)that he had no part in anything fraudulent. However he does admit to taking one "gift" his Cocker Spaniel named Checkers. Other than Checkers, which he receives nor gives any favoritism for accepting, he is an "honest, hardworking" man. He stated that he did not care for the opinion of the public "I just want to say this, right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we're gonna keep it" (par. 26) because his children fell in love with it, and he couldn't bring himself to take it away from them. Throughout Nixon's speech, he presents the illusion that he is in fact "broke", thus appealing to poverty. He gives multiple examples of his financial situations by stating, " I owe 4500 dollars to the Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C., with interest 4 and 1/2 percent. I owe 3500 dollars to my parents, and the interest on that loan, which I pay regularly, because it's the part of the savings they made through the years they were working so hard –– I pay regularly 4 percent interest. And then I have a 500 dollar loan, which I have on my life insurance." (par. 23) which also establishes credibility with his audience. He also says, " But Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we've got is honestly ours. I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything" (par. 25) showing that money is not the reason he is running ... This metal reserve, in turn, could be used in emergency situations to pay for wars or solve shortages. Colonies, like those England had in North America, played an important part in this economic equation. They could help England become self–sufficient by producing things that could not be made or grown there such as tobacco, sugar, and tall masts for ships. Colonists could also provide a market for British goods, particularly manufactured products, such as woolen cloth or beaver hats. This meant that the home economy in England could become more fully developed, while the colonial economies were relegated to a role of supplying raw materials. To insure that the American colonies would contribute to this overall sense of British wealth, various Navigation Acts were passed beginning in 1650 to regulate trade between the colonies, England, and the rest of the world. In many cases, ships carrying American products to other European countries had to stop in England first to pay duties before continuing onward. Introduction The Center for Disease Control estimated that 732,000 American children have been saved by vaccines in the last ten years. Vaccines should be required by law so that we can protect ourselves by building our immunity to preventable illnesses, in an easy, quick, and inexpensive fashion, helping stop major epidemics, and in conclusion, save lives. Body Con 1 – Vaccines weaken a person 's immune system, and can in cases make someone ill. A vaccine is a mix of potentially infectious agents, or some noninfectious part, given to build up a resistance (Stratton). There are four main groups of vaccines: those containing living infectious organisms, those containing infectious agents killed by physical or chemical means, those containing living organisms, and ones containing parts of microorganisms (Stratton). The vaccinated person 's immune system then learns to recognize the bacteria as a threat and develops defenses against that specific bacteria so when an individual is exposed to the live version of the bacteria, his or her body is prepared to defend itself. ("New Vaccines may be cheaper, work better.") Con 2 – Complications to the vaccines, and the possible cause of illness or reactions can be risky. Vaccinations are not without controversy. The set was simple: Nixon sat behind a desk, his hands loosely clasped over his notes, and Pat Nixon was several feet away in a chair that seemed too large for her. The most obvious appeal that Nixon was trying to make to the people was an appeal to the audience's pathos, and the use of the rhetoric tool called the straw man technique which he really drove home through his use of his dog Checkers. After being attacked for receiving and accepting gifts along the campaign trail from his supporters and corporations he admits to accepting one gift, a little cocker spaniel that his six–year– old daughter named Checkers, as guilty as he would have admitted to accepting millions of dollars. By apposing the thought that he was taking money and other dubious gifts with the gift of an adorable new puppy that "a man down in Texas" sent for his children, Nixon creates the sense that he has been victimized for accepting a kind gesture. He is distracting the audience's attention to believe that the only gift he is being accused of taking is this dog, and he is asking them to judge if that is wrong in their own minds. Nixon built a straw man, the real issue at stake is the fund, not a cocker spaniel. He is also appealing to the familiar feeling of any parent who have ever had kids who want a dog by stating "the kids, like all kids, love the dog" to prove that he really is just a family man who is just like them. Finally he ends his portion on Checkers by comically suggesting that no matter what people say he's going to keep the dog which creates the sense that that was the extent of his crime and to prove that he didn't do anything wrong. He was targeted, possibly by those within his own party, by the drudging up and the exposing of a slush fund, in which Nixon used to pay for extra governmental expenses. Instead by heeding to the political pressure and removing himself from the ticket, like those who created the scandal would have wanted, Richard Nixon delivered an impeccable thirty– minute speech, in which he not only defended and cleared himself, but he also turned the tables on his Democratic opponents.
