Slim Shady LP, which earned him his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. His next two

successes, with each being certified diamond in U.S. sales, and both winning Best Rap Album

were followed by Encore in 2004, another critical and commercial success. Eminem went on hiatus
after touring in 2005, releasing Relapse in 2009 and Recovery in 2010. Both won Grammy Awards
and Recovery was the best–selling album of 2010 worldwide, the second time he had the
international best–selling album of the year (after The Eminem Show). Eminem's eighth album,

Rapper's Delight: An Analysis Of Rap Music
The Sugarhill Gang's 1979 song "Rapper's Delight" is widely regarded to be the first hip–hop record
to gain widespread popularity in the mainstream. The 1980's marked the diversification of hip–hop
as the genre developed more complex styles. The person credited with originating the style of
"delivering rhymes over extensive music", that would become known as rap, was Harlem, New
York native, Anthony "DJ Hollywood" Holloway.
Rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner–city African Americans in the
1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic
and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by
four key stylistic elements: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The three most selling albums were The Eminem Show, The Marshall Mathers LP, and The Slim

third studio album by American rapper Eminem. It was released on May 23, 2000, by Aftermath
Entertainment, Interscope Records, and Eminem's newly founded label, Shady. The Slim Shady LP
is the second studio album and the major–label debut by American rapper Eminem. It was released
on February 23, 1999, under Interscope Records and Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment. The album
topped the Billboard 200 for five consecutive weeks. The album has gone on to sell over ten million
copies and on March 7, 2011, it was certified ten–times–platinum by the Recording Industry
Association of America, making it Eminem's first album to receive a Diamond certification in the
United States. A violent fantasy, the acting–out of a persona. The follow–up: the vulnerable artist

The Effects Of Music On The Revolutionary War
To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and extremely useful in
the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as a step forward in the progression of
humanity, it is known to be a much stronger force; and for some, it really defines their existence.
Music is definitely a driving force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human
race. The average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it's taken as a main
interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and certainly had a great effect on
how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting our intelligence. Music served a very functional
role in the Revolutionary War. Songs were written and sang for different reasons. Mainly, they were
used to help make people thrilled, emotional, make fun of the enemy, & forget the terrible realities
of war. During the American Civil War, music played a distinguished role on both sides of the
conflict: the Union and the Confederate. At the time, on the battlefield, a variety of instruments were
being played to issue and lead marching orders and even, at times, to simply boost the Sarkisyan 2
morale of a soldier. Music was a major diversion from the slaughtering and killing going on, helping
the soldiers deal with their homesickness and boredom. WWI had a major impact, not only on
Europe, but on the world. The music during the time is also chaotic for the most part, like the war

My Narrative Essay is about Marshal Bruce Mathers also known as Eminem. I chose to write about
Eminem because he deeply impact the music industry, and people's lives. When Eminem was 9
years old he was in a coma. He was put in a coma by a bully at school. He was in a coma for one
straight week. Eminem would also get bullied at home not just at school. His mom was a drug
addict that didn't really care much about him. Eminem's best friend Proof died. Eminem's new best
friend became Andre Romelle Young. Andre is known as Dr. Dre. Eminem met Dr. Dre in 1997.
They met because Eminem was in "The Wake Up Show". It's an old radio station. Eminem was on
the radio station because he was freestyling. Dr. Dre was impressed with Eminem's freestyling. Dr.

Dre got Eminem more famous than he already was. With some help of Dr. Dre Eminem did the rest
of the work by making his album called The Slim Shady LP in early 1999. Eminem not only makes
rap music he also makes music for people that are having a hard time with a certain situation. He
makes motivational music to influence his fans to not give up and to always thrive for greatness.
Eminem has won awards before. He sent a message to his fans that they can accomplish way much
more than what they think. The really surprising thing is that not once has Eminem said the n–word
in his music. That's crazy to me because now and days that's the only thing I hear rappers say.
Eminem can be a good role model to teenagers or adults. How does that make him a good role
model? Eminem can be a good role model because he started from living in a crack house and his
mom hating him to living in a huge house now.

EMINEM: How Much Damage Can You Do With a Pen
"Damn how much damage can you do with a pen", says rapper Eminem in his song titled, Who
Knew. This song is on Eminem's most recent and most controversial album, The Marshall Mathers
LP. If it possible for one single quote to sum up my research paper, then this quote does it. There
exists an intense and extremely controversial set of circumstances surrounding Eminem and his
music. Eminem's lyrics have been intensely criticized lately and have been categorized as hate–
filled and inappropriate by many gay organizations. The leading organization in this controversy is
the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, more commonly referred to as GLAAD. Their

He gives the example of an interaction between the managers and the employees of an organization,
where a dispute over productivity is occurring. However frame of reference can be used in
discussing the dispute between Eminem and GLAAD over hate lyrics. Just like the managers and
the employees, Eminem and GLAAD's actions are seen by themselves through this narrow focus
that allows groups or individuals to see or perceive the same situation in completely different ways.
Eminem's focus is limited to creating lyrics that will sell him records, no matter how offensive they
are. He claims that his lyrics are not hate–filled and thus are not offensive. This is typical frame of
reference behavior. Of course to Eminem, the creator of these lyrics, they are not going to seem
offensive. He is simply viewing the situation through his own eyes, and is forgetting to truly take in
to account those who he is possibly offending. Just like Eminem is viewing the situation one way,
GLAAD's own frame of reference is making them form opinions that do not take into account why
Eminem writes these lyrics. GLAAD needs to realize that Eminem is first and foremost a
businessman, whose primary objective is to make money, by selling records. Whether or not the
way in which Eminem goes about making his money is beside the point, while discussing frame of
reference. Both Eminem

Analysis Of Love The Way You Lie
"Love The Way You Lie," is a song sung by Eminem featuring Rihanna. Eminem, born as Marshall
Bruce Mathers, is an American rap musician from Missouri. Eminem had a rough life, being raised
only by his mother and constantly moving schools. He would always be beaten up and did not have
great marks, however he was always good at English and would even study the dictionary. He took
his knowledge of words and brought them into his passion of hip hop, which then started his career
in rap. As his career was taking off, he got into bad habits, personal struggles and addictions. In

song is that a couple constantly argue and physically hurt one another, but always go back to each

more powerful.
This song is full of multiple literary devices such as hyperboles, metaphors, and imagery. The
hyperboles in the song emphasize strong feelings such as love, hate, and pain. For example, "Just

amounts of pain and all that her significant other is doing, is watching her suffer. "You ever love
somebody so much you can barely breathe when [you are] with [them]" (Eminem, 33), emphasizes

Analysis Of The Song That I Selected
Independent Study Unit ISU Task 1 – Research & Literary Analysis 1. The name of the song that I
selected is Mockingbird by Marshall Bruce Mathers III also known as Eminem. Marshall was born
to Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. and Deborah Rae Nelson who at this time were 21 years old and 17
years old respectively. Marshall's father had abandoned him and his family when he was a newborn,
which in return made his mom raise Marshall as a single mother. Deborah was never able to keep a
job for more than a couple months, which caused them to move between areas on a regular basis.
This meant that Marshall had to live in different places growing up, which had mostly included
public housing projects. He has even gone on to state about this time, "I would change schools two,
three times a year." Thus, Marshall had a tough time making friends and was generally treated as an
outsider by many other kids, even being bullied on multiple instances. Marshall went on to drop out
of school at the age of 17, after failing the 9th grade three times. Even though Marshall was a high
school dropout, he did however have a love for English, he has said "I found that no matter how bad
I was at school, like, and no matter how low my grades might have been at sometimes, I always was

Eminem, Music Video Analysis Essay examples
Eminem, "My Name Is" Marshall Mathers, better known as Eminem, is recognized for his work as a
rap artist who is able to connect with his audience through humor and rhythmically dicey lyrics.
Eminem's "My Name Is" music video is able signify whiteness and rearticulate race with the use
intertextual editing techniques that parody common representations of whiteness. Eminem is using
his "My Name Is" video as an approach to solidify his style of rapping and thus create new political
and cultural authenticities that entice questions of race representation in the 1990's and beyond.

"My Name Is" director, Phillip Atwell, successfully uses intertextual editing to further increase the
power of this weapon. Atwell begins the video with a shot of a rather disgusting, yet true,
representation of a white American couple getting set to watch TV. He begins to intertextualize
along with setting a rather fast paced tempo for the video when he cuts to a close–up of the TV and
then shows what it is displaying. Atwell artfully shapes the lyrics of the song by using meaningful
parodies mocking the culture of whiteness. The beauty of this video comes not only with the
production and performance of the lyrics, but with the post–production. Atwell shows the audience
various TV shows and then cuts in between them to show the disgusting couple doing disgusting
things as if they are the product of the environment that is being created on the TV. The lives of this
couple can be viewed as being the narrative aspect of the video. Atwell also uses techniques to show
the channels change back and forth to show that they may appear different at first, but in reality they
are all attempting to exploit a similar topic, the topic of whiteness. There are also instances of a
form of graphic match in Atwell's video when the shot is the TV show and it changes showing the
character, Eminem, in the same position on the screen just wearing different costumes. These
instances are used so "the viewer can revel in an interesting edit, in a nice

Analyzing Eminem's Song Rap God
Rap God is a song by Eminem. The text type is therefore lyrics. The lyrics target the listeners of this
song. Considering the fact that the lyrics are in English and Eminem being an American artist, the
primary audience would be hip–hop/rap listeners from the US aged 14 to 30. Since Eminem wrote
this song to mock other rappers, the 'other rappers' would be the secondary audience. Because
Eminem is such a well–known artist, his audience can be expanded. Therefore, global English–
speaking hip–hop/rap listeners are the tertiary audience. The purpose of this song is to show
everybody that he is the best rapper on earth. He uses poetic communication to convey his message.
He does that by means of examples of his achievements in his life. Through these examples he is

This is a metaphor. General Zod is a warlord of the planet Krypton in the Superman comics. General
Zod is a symbol for Eminem. He is basically telling people to kneel down before him because he is
a superhero. He continues the metaphor in the next line: So you be Thor and I'll be Odin, you
rodent, I'm omnipotent. In Norse mythology Odin is a great person; he is almost comparable to God.
Thor is his son and therefore less powerful. This suggests that all the rappers can be good but he will
always be more superior. This sentiment is accentuated by the words 'rodent' and 'omnipotent'. All
the rappers are rodents. Rodents are mammals descendent from Rodentia such as mice and rats.
Here it becomes clear that Eminem looks down to the other rappers because is indirectly calling
them rats. He himself is omnipotent meaning he is the most powerful of all. In addition, when he
raps this part of the song, he puts emphasis on the syllable –po– (om–ni–PO–tent) instead of om–

Not long ago Eminem was in court for gun charges. He hit somebody over the head with a gun
because he was hitting on his wife, Kim Mathers. Eminem was fined thousands of dollars, put on a
good behaviour bond and monthly drug tests. So to stay out of trouble Eminem gathered a few of
his unsigned rapper friends to create a rap group. This forming D12 a.k.a. Dirty Dozen. Eminem and
D12 recently released a single called "S**t On You." This song is about the critics continuously
harassing Eminem about him and his lyrics. Eminem explains he is sick of it and doesn't care who
you are or who you know he will s**t on you.
Groups of anti Eminem protestors are trying to have him band from television and radio. They are

Comparing Macbeth And Rihanna
Every decision, every action, has some type of repercussion, whether it is good or bad, immediate or
long–term. This idea has prevailed over the course of human history from the Elizabethan Age to the
present. Macbeth's character portrayal by Shakespeare in Macbeth, and Eminem's self expression in
the song "The Monster" by Eminem and Rihanna describe two individuals that become puppets in
their own life due to the consequences of their ambitious actions. Macbeth's ambition leads him to
become king. Eminem's desire to be recognized leads him to fame. Like the saying goes, "be careful
what you wish for" because one just might get it. Both characters get what they wanted, but it cost

The psychological mindsets of both characters negatively change as the consequences of their
actions and desires start to set in. Eminem starts to become consumed by his fame. The media steals
his privacy from him like any other popular celebrity. "I wanted the fame, but not the cover of
Newsweek" ("The Monster"). The constant praise he has received as a popular artist has changed his
character into someone who amplifies their ego. "I think I'm getting so huge I need a shrink" ("The
Monster"). He feels a constant pressure that any popular artist faces from the industry to maintain
appearances, but it takes a heavy toll on his psychological state. Macbeth becomes constantly
paranoid about his position, believing that his throne will be taken away from him. Desperation
takes a hold of him, allowing him to change his morals and values. He becomes apathetic to things
that he previously wasn't to, such as the life of others. Murder becomes casual to Macbeth, not even
blinking as he unnecessarily takes the life of Lady Macduff and her son. He is described as a tyrant
by his subjects, "Not in the legions of horrid hell can come a devil more damned in evils to top

himself legitimate to the rap world. Gatsby and Eminem both felt the constant need to make
themselves into completely different people. Both of these characters came from nothing and
became unstoppable forces in their worlds.
Jay Gatsby and Eminem both have unstable backgrounds and came from rural areas in the Mid–

Changing your name is a big deal because it means leaving behind the person you were, "James
Gatz– that was really, or at least legally, his name" (Fitzgerald 98). Gatsby and Eminem both
dreamed of having better lives and the risk they both took was for their dreams to come true.
Eminem decided to change his name as did Gatsby. They both wanted cooler names to make them
legitimate in the eyes of the world, "at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his
career" (Fitzgerald 98). Eminem has the spirit of Jay Gatsby because he worked through his
struggles and tried his hardest to fit into the rap world. Going from a normal name like Marshall
Mathers to Eminem shows his determination to fit into the rap world, "his parents were shiftless and
unsuccessful farm people– his imagination had never really accepted them as his parents at all"

Eminem: Personal Life versus Career When you hear the name Eminem, you picture a skinny,
tattoo–covered white guy rapping about drugs, rape, and violence; he has created this image for
himself, and tends to hide away the other parts of himself. His alter ego, Slim Shady, is the complete
and utter worst possible version of himself – he is completely uncensored and always speaks his
mind. The artist behind the music is Marshall Mathers, whose life was not so easy, especially
growing up. He had a troubled childhood and an equally troubled adulthood. The frequent changes
in his life heavily impacted his work and the style of his music. Marshall Bruce Mathers III was

Later that same year, Eminem was feeling low when he realized he still could not support his
girlfriend and child and that his career was not moving forward. There was a rap competition that
offered $500 as a prize, and he was determined to win it. However, he only made second place. This
was around the time that Eminem met Dr. Dre, an important figure in the rap industry who would
later become one of his greatest mentors and friends. Upon hearing one of the songs on The Slim
Shady EP, Dr. Dre claimed he was fascinated, and knew he had to find the man behind the music.
For Eminem, Dr. Dre was the light in the darkness. In 1998, he offered him a contract with
Aftermath Records. Eminem did not think twice before signing, overjoyed that his album was
getting so much positive feedback and that he would finally be able to buy food and diapers for his
daughter. This was also the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Eminem and Dr. Dre. After
The Slim Shady EP came The Slim Shady LP in 1999, which was largely successful, selling over
500,000 copies in the first two weeks. The songs on this album were still as hateful as ever, dealing
with a wide range of targets including but not limited to celebrities, women, and homosexuals. His
lyrics raised controversy over whether he was racist, sexist, a homophobe, or all of the above. One
of his most notorious songs on the album is titled "97 Bonnie & Clyde," in which Eminem takes his

Tupac Dear Mama Song Analysis
Childhood life and struggle truly impacts the person actions, reactions, behavior and how others
view him. Almost everyone has gone through the time of their childhood where they had to deal
with all the problems and difficulty they faced during that period of time. Many might regret all of
the problems and decisions they created or made for themselves. The two Hip–Hop songs that
portray the same idea are "Cleaning out My Closet" by Eminem and "Dear Mama" by Tupac. Some
of the aspects are the same and some are different but both songs convey the significance of them
striving through their youth and the hardship that went on. Both songs clearly portray a visual that
relates to the idea of struggle and shows the criteria, but the song "Dear Mama" ... Show more

He showed his past from the time since he was a kid and briefly talking through everything, but
however that is not valid because the video only depicts most of the time him rapping about his past
life and showing just little clips from that time, whereas "Dear mama" tells a story till the end. Also,
as the video progresses Tupac only talks about his life and includes visuals throughout. He is barely
seen in the video because he is showing other aspects of his life including other people, however
Eminem is seen often in the video which takes away the interest of what he is trying to convey.
Tupac stays on point because he starts in the beginning by revealing his story and keeps that
attraction and interest till the end. The connection that he shows in his video keeps the viewer
attentive and informed. The setting that Eminem uses in his music video doesn't have anything to do
with what he is trying to point out. Also in the middle of the video, he is standing in the graveyard
and burying which again does not prove anything. Tupac doesn't use any instance from his past that
does not relate to his video or something that makes it confusing. He takes through a series of
experiences in his life while keeping everything organized and

Rap: Dominant Forces In Popular Culture
Whether rap is amongst the most dominant forces in popular culture has been an ongoing argument.
Rap has been a favorite musical genre amongst all Americans, specifically young teenagers. Rap has
been intensively growing and has reach global success. Different forms of rap have been adapted in
various different countries in order to satisfy the public's enjoyment of the genre. More specifically,
gangsta rap is a subgenre to the broad genre of rap. "Artists offering other kinds of rap are
categorized as either "alternative" or "non–gangsta wing of hip–hop" (Armstrong 335). This is

Evaluation of Marshall Bruce Mathers the third also know as Eminem after being arrested for

In an article by the Rolling Stones, Eminem was asked if he felt that he needed psychotherapy and
he stated, "I don't need no shrink. My music is my shrink" (Bozza, 2015). His vulgar language and
the use of drugs are often seen as socially acceptable behaviors and are how Eminem seems to
express his feelings. Eminem shows to be in a narcissistic paradox, he shows high self–esteem by
having too much pride to admit that he may need therapy. While he still doubts his worth due to
having a difficult childhood which he only feels comfortable expressing in his music and even by
him creating an alternate persona by the name of Slim Shady. The narcissistic tendencies that
Eminem exhibits can relate to his aggression leading him to be facing two felonies, "As our results
generally demonstrate that individuals who scored higher on narcissism had more accepting
attitudes towards violence, this suggests that narcissism also predicts more accepting attitudes
towards authoritarian aggression in both males and females." (Blinkhorn, Lyons, & Almond, 2016).
Eminem's aggravation on the night he witnessed his wife kissing another man but also is traced back
to when he was in high school, "While enrolled at Lincoln High School in Warren, Mathers

he signed up for the 1997 Rap Olympics. His goal was to win the $1,500 cash prize which he was

Mathers got second place. Enraged at the fact that he had lost, Mathers didn't even realize that some
producers from Interscope Records had spotted him and they were given a copy of his "Infinite"
playlist as a kind of demo. Dr. Dre, from N.W.A., was widely respected and eventually he tracked
Eminem down. They produced several tracks together for Eminem's first studio LP (Long–Playing)

that all needs need to be satisfied in order for someone to become self actualized. The question is
was Eminem able to reach self actualization? (Westefil, 2012) For example one will always be

White privilege is something that most people aren't aware of. In "Untouchable", Eminem includes

white privilege and the social impacts that come along. White privilege is a big issue in our society

where white privilege can protect whites while doing the opposite for blacks, nevertheless he's
incorporating his view to show his audience that justice does not equally practice and that people

Tupac Lose Yourself Analysis
"The underdog just turned to the wolf" (Big Sean, 2016). An underdog story is always inspiring to
people who are trying to achieving a goal. The songs "Lose Yourself" by Eminem and "The Rose
That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur are great examples of underdog stories. Both of these
art pieces show unexpected growth, doubt of the protagonist, and motivates the reader. First of all,
both of these art pieces show astonishing and surprising growth of the protagonist. In Tupac's poem,
the rose is a metaphor for the protagonist, which shockingly grew out of a crack in the concrete.
"Provin nature's laws wrong it learned how to walk without having feet"(Tupac, verse 3). Nature
indicates that a rose can't grow without soil and water, but this rose is proving nature wrong. This is
completely unpredictable because usually a beautiful flower like the rose, would not grow from the
hard, rough ground of concrete, but in this case, a marvelous flower grew from hard gravel. "Lose
Yourself" is telling a story about a protagonist who extraordinarily shocked the crowd with his
miraculous rapping skills. No one anticipated a poor man like him, living in a rough community,
could grow to be an astonishing rapper. "I was playing in the beginning, the mood all changed"

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Infinite 99 By Eminem
Eminem is a rap artist who made his debut in rap with the band D–12 and his first solo rap album
Infinite 99'. Eminem is a rap artist who took the rap world by storm because he spoke his mind. He
is a very good rapper and at the time it was predominantly black people who rapped and were
successful so people were surprised when a white rapper was on top of the rap world. He is a very
controversial artist with a lot of profanity, and being so open about societal topics. One of his most
controversial songs is "Mosh" it is a song protesting Bush's presidency. This song was strategically
released the October before the 2004 elections. The song was protesting Bush's presidency which
include the Iraq war, and Bush's secrecy. After 9/11 there were a lot of secrets that were being kept
from the American people. He also protested the war with some of his lyrics and called out that
troops were being redeployed instantly as they got home to their spouse. He really lets out how he
feels about Bush and the Iraq war, and the secrecy. Most people may just see that his is calling out
Pres. Bush in anger but Eminem has a clear meaning and motive for writing the song. The first

Perseverance In The Odyssey

timeless. Odysseus is a brave and strong character. He perseveres through suffering because he

Eminem and Odysseus go through personal battles but in different ways. Odysseus and Eminem

Argumentative Essay On Eminem
Eminem
Eminem is an iconic figure that millions of people recognize around the world for over decades
now. Not only for his music but the pure controversy that his music includes. Many people see him
as a politically incorrect artist who lacks awareness of his word choice which ultimately leads him
to controversy. Throughout my essay, I will give some insight into the life of Eminem, some
examples of his controversial lyrics, and the different points of view people have on him.
Eminem also knows as Marshall Mathers III was a young Caucasian boy raised in Kansas City. He
was part of a single–parent household which causes instability in his childhood. His mother was a
drug addict who gives birth to Marshall Mathers in her teenage years, and his father left him at a
very young age. He had to spend time in various locations and then finally he resided in Detroit.
Many people in his life said he was a very anti–social person who had immense difficulty making
friendship which also leads him to a child who cannot find his way out of trouble. He said he was
"not interested in school because all he wanted to do was rap" which goes to show he was not a
good role model to immolate, Eminem didn't start his rap career until he was 14. At the beginning,
he wasn't seen as a rapper that people should be taken seriously, but over time he had to earn the
respect of his fans and critics. His rap music is often filled with anger and malicious behaviors
which also lead him to become a figure in the rap industry.
As Eminem grew as a rapper, he became the poster boy of controversy with "offensive language
towards women, homophobia towards gay, and crude language". He also a person with a criminal
record with multiple gun charges. Even the President of the United States at the time George W.
Bush, describing him "the greatest threat to America's children since polio" which just goes to show
how much negative impact that Eminem had on the viewing public. In one of his most tendentious
songs of his career from the song "Kill You" he is noted as saying "You faggots keep egging me on

"Encore/Curtains Down" from Encore.
The Marshall Mathers LP was released in May 2000, and quickly sold two million copies. It was
Eminem's fastest selling album to date.[16] The first single released from the album, "The Real Slim
Shady", was a success and created some buzz by insulting celebrities and making dubious claims
about them; he implies, among other things, that Christina Aguilera performed oral sex on Fred
Durst (of Limp Bizkit) and Carson Daly (of MTV's Total Request Live)[17]. In his second single,
"The Way I Am", he reveals to his fans the pressures from his record company to top "My Name Is"
and sell more records. Eminem had parodied shock rocker Marilyn Manson in the video "My Name
Is", the artists are now on good terms. They have performed a remix of the song "The Way I Am"
together in concert.[18] In the third single, "Stan" (which samples Dido's "Thank You"), Eminem
attempts to deal with his new–found fame, taking on the perspective of a deranged fan who kills

The Artist Who I Am
The artist who I will be focusing on for this assignment is Eminem. I find him interesting because
he became really famous around 27 (my current age) just before the new millennium but is still
considered highly popular, relevant and on top of the hip–hop world. His albums consistently go
multi–platinum, even though some were panned by critics and fans alike. I find him to be an
interesting story from what I have heard in general. His personality, drug use, controversies, near–
death, and his continued relevance as an artist that appears to value youth into his forties are all
points of interest. Although in today's society, he is viewed as mainstream and widely accepted it
wasn't always that way. As a white/Caucasian artist in a predominately black music culture in the
1990's (Allison, 2002), and following the exposure of Vanilla Ices street life as little more than
fabrications and lies, people were always quick to embrace his music. Early radio interviews that
Eminem did with radio DJ's often questioned his legitimacy as a rapper and his upbringing (Molden,
2005), and with some even going as far as to straight up say he was "acting black". He was
apparently often ridiculed as an early emcee trying to get into the Detroit hip–hop scene as well,
struggling to find acceptance.
In turn, I would like to address essay question two because I feel that there are some parallels with
my artist. Although it is arguable that Eminem's skin color may have added to his eventual

The Eminem's second single album, The Slim Shady Lp, was released in 1999, in the hip hop era of
gangster, and the environment of hip hop back then was mostly ghetto style. The mainstream of hip
hop music was African American style and it was dominated by their racial culture. Most hip hop
music in that era was produced for the business purpose, and the hip hop market started to decrease
due to the full of similar style of music that made listeners get tired. That might be the signal of
desiring a new style of hip hop from the public, and at that time, Eminem appeared with a new,
fresh, and different style from the previous boring style and it was sensational in the hip hop world.
The whole hip hop world faced the turning point for the new genre, and Eminem was the main
leader of the new hip hop era. The white rapper rapped with weird melody, entertaining contents,
and funny music video1. The whole world got shocked by the broken stereotype and people started
to follow this sensation. From his appearance, Eminem became the biggest rap star of the new
century, as well as he became a symbol of some political tensions of late 19's. His success
apparently showed the world that "white" can be a rapper with a great fame, and Eminem broke the
stereotype that hip hop genre is only under the African American's world. When Eminem released
his album, he and his producers had to deal with the stereotype of his racial identity and they went
through by changing how much white race matters

Inequality In The 8 Mile
8 Mile is the story of Jimmy Smith, played by Eminem, and the struggles he went through before
becoming a major star in the music industry. It shows the highs and lows of the pre–rap star era in
his life, and how growing up in the rough area of Detroit, Michigan and how that not only made his
life harder, but made him stronger. It is unbelievable that Eminem had to go through the struggles he
had, but that he became the nearly unstoppable and invincible legend he is today. His story was an
eye opening one for me to hear, and it made me appreciate him a lot more as well.
The movie starts out with Eminem in a dark bathroom and shows him rapping in to the mirror,
trying to get pumped up for the rap battle. He is listening to some rap music through ... Show more

It reminds me how the poor kids are walking around the wealthy street and questioning the
democracy and equality in this nation, and I think Eminem has challenged the thought of inequality
in his life, going from extreme rags to one of the biggest rap stars in the history of music. The kids
think it is unfair that bad things happened to them and they could also not afford things and Eminem
takes a similar idea of being down and in a trailor part in Detroit, and then climbs out of there. He
does not have a car and cannot get a fancy job, but still tried to build himself up the ranks. His
mother always believed in him and wanted him to be successful, just like Miss Moore did in the
kids she was teaching. Miss Moore tried to teach the kids life lessons rather than book knowledge,
which in the real world, a lot of the time street smarts and common sense is much more useful than
book smarts. Eminem's mom and daughter teach him how to stick with things, no matter how bad
things might get, but it will be worth it in the end, and look where he ended up, at the top of the
music industry, and does not seem to be coming down any time soon. Eminem has been thought of
as the "new savior" of music, such as Elvis did in the 1950's changing the face of Rock n' Roll,
which Eminem did to the Pop, Hip–Hop, and Rap industries helping them become more popular.
Miss Moore wants to show the kids how hard work can help you achieve anything you want, and
clearly Eminem went with that, he never gave up and spent hours upon hours writing raps and trying
to make it big, just to have a better life for him and his daughter. It is obvious in his song "Lose
Yourself" that he knew he had a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a rapper and he needed to
work hard to, first off, get the opportunity, but secondly, stay in the industry. Eminem is one of the
biggest and most well known rags to riches

Eminem's "Stan": Following the Form of a Dramatic...
The song "Stan" by rap artist Eminem fits the dramatic monologue format popularized by Robert
Browning, because in Eminem's song, Stan fits all of the characteristics of the Duke in My last
Douches. Stan is extremely obsessive; in the beginning of the song he dies his hair and is trying to
actually become Slim Shady, even his outfit and style are the same as Slim and is screaming in his
girlfriend's face because she keeps calling him Stanly when I would imagine he would want to be
called Slim, or Eminem, or Marshal, and just the fact that you would write not one but multiple
letters, as he mentions in the song, to a celebrity in the first place is just a bit weird and obsessive in
a way because he is so obsessed with just wanting to talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Stan is extremely suicidal but doesn't really show it until verse two, saying that he sometimes cuts
himself, which I imagine he would be doing often, just to see how much he can bleed, just because
of the fact that a person he has met once and is very famous and busy will not write him back, in
verse 3 Stanley says that he is driving 90 miles an hour on the freeway after drinking alcohol driving
towards the end of a bridge, if he is not asking to

Eminem's 'Cleanin' Out My Closet
Eminem and his mother have never had the best relationship. In his 2002 song, "Cleanin' Out My
Closet," Eminem raps,
"Bitch do your song – keep telling yourself that you was a mom!
But how dare you try to take what you didn't help me to get
You selfish bitch, I hope you fucking burn in hell for this shit
Remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished it was me?
Well guess what, I am dead – dead to you as can be!"
Their toxic relationship was well–documented in this and many other of his songs. In fact, in 2001,
Eminem's mother, Debbie Mathers, filed a defamation lawsuit against Eminem for the slandering of
her name. Years later comes an offering of remorse from Eminem. Released on Mother's Day of
2014, Eminem's "Headlights" is an apology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first instance where eyeline match was particularly important was when the mother was
approaching the man at the park whom she believed to be Eminem. We see her approaching him,
and through the point of view and camera angle, we see that she is staring at him. In the second shot
of the scene, the camera shows that the man is meeting the mother's gaze. A similar eyeline match is
used when the mother and Eminem embrace at the front of the complex's gates. Unlike a Hollywood
movie, music videos have to pay attention to the rhythm and beat of the song when editing
(Vernallis, p.125). Here is where editing and sound meet up in "Headlights." When the intensity and
speed of the music pick up at 3:18, the photos flash before us more quickly, and the cuts between
photos become much more disjointed. This disjunctive editing signals to the audience that they
should be intellectually engaged at this point of the song (Corrigan, p.470), especially since most
parts of the video implement continuity editing in order to tell a fluid story. Choosing to have such a
different pace of editing from the other parts of the video in this instance shows just how big of a
step for Eminem this song is. Editing is manipulative, meaning that the editing forces us to see what
the filmmaker wants us to see (Kolker, p.15), and Lee was able to edit "Headlights" in such a way
that Eminem's feelings and purpose for writing the song were clearly expressed and

Marshall Bruce Mathers III

  • 1. Marshall Bruce Mathers III Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born October 17, 1972),[1] known professionally as Eminem (often stylized as EMINƎM), is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Eminem is the best– selling artist of the 2000s in the United States. Throughout his career, he has had 10 number–one albums on the Billboard 200 and five number–one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. • 2. Rapper's Delight: An Analysis Of Rap Music The Sugarhill Gang's 1979 song "Rapper's Delight" is widely regarded to be the first hip–hop record to gain widespread popularity in the mainstream. The 1980's marked the diversification of hip–hop as the genre developed more complex styles. The person credited with originating the style of "delivering rhymes over extensive music", that would become known as rap, was Harlem, New York native, Anthony "DJ Hollywood" Holloway. Rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner–city African Americans in the 1970s which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. The Effects Of Music On The Revolutionary War To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and extremely useful in the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as a step forward in the progression of humanity, it is known to be a much stronger force; and for some, it really defines their existence. Music is definitely a driving force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human race. The average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it's taken as a main interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and certainly had a great effect on how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting our intelligence. Music served a very functional role in the Revolutionary War. Songs were written and sang for different reasons. Mainly, they were used to help make people thrilled, emotional, make fun of the enemy, & forget the terrible realities of war. During the American Civil War, music played a distinguished role on both sides of the conflict: the Union and the Confederate. At the time, on the battlefield, a variety of instruments were being played to issue and lead marching orders and even, at times, to simply boost the Sarkisyan 2 morale of a soldier. Music was a major diversion from the slaughtering and killing going on, helping the soldiers deal with their homesickness and boredom. WWI had a major impact, not only on Europe, but on the world. He makes motivational music to influence his fans to not give up and to always thrive for greatness. Eminem has won awards before. He sent a message to his fans that they can accomplish way much more than what they think. The really surprising thing is that not once has Eminem said the n–word in his music. That's crazy to me because now and days that's the only thing I hear rappers say. Eminem can be a good role model to teenagers or adults. How does that make him a good role model? There exists an intense and extremely controversial set of circumstances surrounding Eminem and his music. Just like the managers and the employees, Eminem and GLAAD's actions are seen by themselves through this narrow focus that allows groups or individuals to see or perceive the same situation in completely different ways. Eminem's focus is limited to creating lyrics that will sell him records, no matter how offensive they are. He claims that his lyrics are not hate–filled and thus are not offensive. This is typical frame of reference behavior. Of course to Eminem, the creator of these lyrics, they are not going to seem offensive. He is simply viewing the situation through his own eyes, and is forgetting to truly take in to account those who he is possibly offending. Just like Eminem is viewing the situation one way, GLAAD's own frame of reference is making them form opinions that do not take into account why Eminem writes these lyrics. GLAAD needs to realize that Eminem is first and foremost a businessman, whose primary objective is to make money, by selling records. The name of the song that I selected is Mockingbird by Marshall Bruce Mathers III also known as Eminem. Marshall was born to Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. and Deborah Rae Nelson who at this time were 21 years old and 17 years old respectively. Marshall's father had abandoned him and his family when he was a newborn, which in return made his mom raise Marshall as a single mother. Deborah was never able to keep a job for more than a couple months, which caused them to move between areas on a regular basis. This meant that Marshall had to live in different places growing up, which had mostly included public housing projects. He has even gone on to state about this time, "I would change schools two, three times a year." Thus, Marshall had a tough time making friends and was generally treated as an outsider by many other kids, even being bullied on multiple instances. Marshall went on to drop out of school at the age of 17, after failing the 9th grade three times. Even though Marshall was a high school dropout, he did however have a love for English, he has said "I found that no matter how bad I was at school, like, and no matter how low my grades might have been at sometimes, I always was good at English ... He begins to intertextualize along with setting a rather fast paced tempo for the video when he cuts to a close–up of the TV and then shows what it is displaying. Atwell artfully shapes the lyrics of the song by using meaningful parodies mocking the culture of whiteness. The beauty of this video comes not only with the production and performance of the lyrics, but with the post–production. Atwell shows the audience various TV shows and then cuts in between them to show the disgusting couple doing disgusting things as if they are the product of the environment that is being created on the TV. The lives of this couple can be viewed as being the narrative aspect of the video. Atwell also uses techniques to show the channels change back and forth to show that they may appear different at first, but in reality they are all attempting to exploit a similar topic, the topic of whiteness. There are also instances of a form of graphic match in Atwell's video when the shot is the TV show and it changes showing the character, Eminem, in the same position on the screen just wearing different costumes. • 28. Tupac Lose Yourself Analysis "The underdog just turned to the wolf" (Big Sean, 2016). An underdog story is always inspiring to people who are trying to achieving a goal. The songs "Lose Yourself" by Eminem and "The Rose That Grew From Concrete" by Tupac Shakur are great examples of underdog stories. Both of these art pieces show unexpected growth, doubt of the protagonist, and motivates the reader. First of all, both of these art pieces show astonishing and surprising growth of the protagonist. In Tupac's poem, the rose is a metaphor for the protagonist, which shockingly grew out of a crack in the concrete. "Provin nature's laws wrong it learned how to walk without having feet"(Tupac, verse 3). Nature indicates that a rose can't grow without soil and water, but this rose is proving nature wrong. This is completely unpredictable because usually a beautiful flower like the rose, would not grow from the hard, rough ground of concrete, but in this case, a marvelous flower grew from hard gravel. "Lose Yourself" is telling a story about a protagonist who extraordinarily shocked the crowd with his miraculous rapping skills. No one anticipated a poor man like him, living in a rough community, could grow to be an astonishing rapper. "I was playing in the beginning, the mood all changed" (Eminem, verse 3). Eminem is a rap artist who took the rap world by storm because he spoke his mind. He is a very good rapper and at the time it was predominantly black people who rapped and were successful so people were surprised when a white rapper was on top of the rap world. He is a very controversial artist with a lot of profanity, and being so open about societal topics. One of his most controversial songs is "Mosh" it is a song protesting Bush's presidency. This song was strategically released the October before the 2004 elections. The song was protesting Bush's presidency which include the Iraq war, and Bush's secrecy. After 9/11 there were a lot of secrets that were being kept from the American people. He also protested the war with some of his lyrics and called out that troops were being redeployed instantly as they got home to their spouse. He really lets out how he feels about Bush and the Iraq war, and the secrecy. Most people may just see that his is calling out Pres. He perseveres through suffering because he wants to get back to his family. These themes are similar to the ones found in the song "Lose Yourself." This is the theme song from the movie 8 Mile about a young rapper named Eminem. Eminem wants glory and honor but has to persevere through suffering to take care of his family. Eminem and Odysseus go through personal battles but in different ways. Odysseus and Eminem (the rapper) are similar because they both have a strong bond with family. They both stayed loyal to family. Not only for his music but the pure controversy that his music includes. Many people see him as a politically incorrect artist who lacks awareness of his word choice which ultimately leads him to controversy. Throughout my essay, I will give some insight into the life of Eminem, some examples of his controversial lyrics, and the different points of view people have on him. Eminem also knows as Marshall Mathers III was a young Caucasian boy raised in Kansas City. He was part of a single–parent household which causes instability in his childhood. His mother was a drug addict who gives birth to Marshall Mathers in her teenage years, and his father left him at a very young age. He had to spend time in various locations and then finally he resided in Detroit. Many people in his life said he was a very anti–social person who had immense difficulty making friendship which also leads him to a child who cannot find his way out of trouble. He said he was "not interested in school because all he wanted to do was rap" which goes to show he was not a good role model to immolate, Eminem didn't start his rap career until he was 14. At the beginning, he wasn't seen as a rapper that people should be taken seriously, but over time he had to earn the respect of his fans and critics. His rap music is often filled with anger and malicious behaviors which also lead him to become a figure in the rap industry. As Eminem grew as a rapper, he became the poster boy of controversy with "offensive language towards women, homophobia towards gay, and crude language". He also a person with a criminal record with multiple gun charges. Even the President of the United States at the time George W. Bush, describing him "the greatest threat to America's children since polio" which just goes to show how much negative impact that Eminem had on the viewing public. The Marshall Mathers LP was released in May 2000, and quickly sold two million copies. It was Eminem's fastest selling album to date.[16] The first single released from the album, "The Real Slim Shady", was a success and created some buzz by insulting celebrities and making dubious claims about them; he implies, among other things, that Christina Aguilera performed oral sex on Fred Durst (of Limp Bizkit) and Carson Daly (of MTV's Total Request Live)[17]. • 35. The Artist Who I Am The artist who I will be focusing on for this assignment is Eminem. I find him interesting because he became really famous around 27 (my current age) just before the new millennium but is still considered highly popular, relevant and on top of the hip–hop world. His albums consistently go multi–platinum, even though some were panned by critics and fans alike. I find him to be an interesting story from what I have heard in general. His personality, drug use, controversies, near– death, and his continued relevance as an artist that appears to value youth into his forties are all points of interest. Although in today's society, he is viewed as mainstream and widely accepted it wasn't always that way. As a white/Caucasian artist in a predominately black music culture in the 1990's (Allison, 2002), and following the exposure of Vanilla Ices street life as little more than fabrications and lies, people were always quick to embrace his music. Early radio interviews that Eminem did with radio DJ's often questioned his legitimacy as a rapper and his upbringing (Molden, 2005), and with some even going as far as to straight up say he was "acting black". He was apparently often ridiculed as an early emcee trying to get into the Detroit hip–hop scene as well, struggling to find acceptance. The Eminem 's Third Single Album The Eminem's second single album, The Slim Shady Lp, was released in 1999, in the hip hop era of gangster, and the environment of hip hop back then was mostly ghetto style. Most hip hop music in that era was produced for the business purpose, and the hip hop market started to decrease due to the full of similar style of music that made listeners get tired. That might be the signal of desiring a new style of hip hop from the public, and at that time, Eminem appeared with a new, fresh, and different style from the previous boring style and it was sensational in the hip hop world. The kids think it is unfair that bad things happened to them and they could also not afford things and Eminem takes a similar idea of being down and in a trailor part in Detroit, and then climbs out of there. He does not have a car and cannot get a fancy job, but still tried to build himself up the ranks. His mother always believed in him and wanted him to be successful, just like Miss Moore did in the kids she was teaching. Miss Moore tried to teach the kids life lessons rather than book knowledge, which in the real world, a lot of the time street smarts and common sense is much more useful than book smarts. Unlike a Hollywood movie, music videos have to pay attention to the rhythm and beat of the song when editing (Vernallis, p.125). Here is where editing and sound meet up in "Headlights." When the intensity and speed of the music pick up at 3:18, the photos flash before us more quickly, and the cuts between photos become much more disjointed. This disjunctive editing signals to the audience that they should be intellectually engaged at this point of the song (Corrigan, p.470), especially since most parts of the video implement continuity editing in order to tell a fluid story. Choosing to have such a different pace of editing from the other parts of the video in this instance shows just how big of a step for Eminem this song is.
