The Artist Who I Am
The artist who I will be focusing on for this assignment is Eminem. I find him interesting because
he became really famous around 27 (my current age) just before the new millennium but is still
considered highly popular, relevant and on top of the hip–hop world. His albums consistently go
multi–platinum, even though some were panned by critics and fans alike. I find him to be an
interesting story from what I have heard in general. His personality, drug use, controversies, near–
death, and his continued relevance as an artist that appears to value youth into his forties are all
points of interest. Although in today's society, he is viewed as mainstream and widely accepted it
wasn't always that way. As a white/Caucasian artist in a predominately black music culture in the
1990's (Allison, 2002), and following the exposure of Vanilla Ices street life as little more than
fabrications and lies, people were always quick to embrace his music. Early radio interviews that
Eminem did with radio DJ's often questioned his legitimacy as a rapper and his upbringing (Molden,
2005), and with some even going as far as to straight up say he was "acting black". He was
apparently often ridiculed as an early emcee trying to get into the Detroit hip–hop scene as well,
struggling to find acceptance.
In turn, I would like to address essay question two because I feel that there are some parallels with

The Eminem 's Third Single Album
The Eminem's second single album, The Slim Shady Lp, was released in 1999, in the hip hop era of
gangster, and the environment of hip hop back then was mostly ghetto style. The mainstream of hip
hop music was African American style and it was dominated by their racial culture. Most hip hop
music in that era was produced for the business purpose, and the hip hop market started to decrease
due to the full of similar style of music that made listeners get tired. That might be the signal of
desiring a new style of hip hop from the public, and at that time, Eminem appeared with a new,
fresh, and different style from the previous boring style and it was sensational in the hip hop world.
The whole hip hop world faced the turning point for the new genre, and Eminem was the main
leader of the new hip hop era. The white rapper rapped with weird melody, entertaining contents,
and funny music video1. The whole world got shocked by the broken stereotype and people started
to follow this sensation. From his appearance, Eminem became the biggest rap star of the new
century, as well as he became a symbol of some political tensions of late 19's. His success
apparently showed the world that "white" can be a rapper with a great fame, and Eminem broke the
stereotype that hip hop genre is only under the African American's world. When Eminem released
his album, he and his producers had to deal with the stereotype of his racial identity and they went
through by changing how much white race matters

Inequality In The 8 Mile
8 Mile is the story of Jimmy Smith, played by Eminem, and the struggles he went through before
becoming a major star in the music industry. It shows the highs and lows of the pre–rap star era in
his life, and how growing up in the rough area of Detroit, Michigan and how that not only made his
life harder, but made him stronger. It is unbelievable that Eminem had to go through the struggles he
had, but that he became the nearly unstoppable and invincible legend he is today. His story was an
eye opening one for me to hear, and it made me appreciate him a lot more as well.
The movie starts out with Eminem in a dark bathroom and shows him rapping in to the mirror,

It reminds me how the poor kids are walking around the wealthy street and questioning the
democracy and equality in this nation, and I think Eminem has challenged the thought of inequality
in his life, going from extreme rags to one of the biggest rap stars in the history of music. The kids
think it is unfair that bad things happened to them and they could also not afford things and Eminem
takes a similar idea of being down and in a trailor part in Detroit, and then climbs out of there. He
does not have a car and cannot get a fancy job, but still tried to build himself up the ranks. His
mother always believed in him and wanted him to be successful, just like Miss Moore did in the
kids she was teaching. Miss Moore tried to teach the kids life lessons rather than book knowledge,
which in the real world, a lot of the time street smarts and common sense is much more useful than
book smarts. Eminem's mom and daughter teach him how to stick with things, no matter how bad
things might get, but it will be worth it in the end, and look where he ended up, at the top of the
music industry, and does not seem to be coming down any time soon. Eminem has been thought of
as the "new savior" of music, such as Elvis did in the 1950's changing the face of Rock n' Roll,
which Eminem did to the Pop, Hip–Hop, and Rap industries helping them become more popular.
Miss Moore wants to show the kids how hard work can help you achieve anything you want, and
clearly Eminem went with that, he never gave up and spent hours upon hours writing raps and trying
to make it big, just to have a better life for him and his daughter. It is obvious in his song "Lose
Yourself" that he knew he had a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a rapper and he needed to
work hard to, first off, get the opportunity, but secondly, stay in the industry. Eminem is one of the

The song "Stan" by rap artist Eminem fits the dramatic monologue format popularized by Robert
Browning, because in Eminem's song, Stan fits all of the characteristics of the Duke in My last
Douches. Stan is extremely obsessive; in the beginning of the song he dies his hair and is trying to
actually become Slim Shady, even his outfit and style are the same as Slim and is screaming in his
girlfriend's face because she keeps calling him Stanly when I would imagine he would want to be
called Slim, or Eminem, or Marshal, and just the fact that you would write not one but multiple

The first instance where eyeline match was particularly important was when the mother was
approaching the man at the park whom she believed to be Eminem. We see her approaching him,
and through the point of view and camera angle, we see that she is staring at him. In the second shot
of the scene, the camera shows that the man is meeting the mother's gaze. A similar eyeline match is
used when the mother and Eminem embrace at the front of the complex's gates. Unlike a Hollywood
movie, music videos have to pay attention to the rhythm and beat of the song when editing
(Vernallis, p.125). Here is where editing and sound meet up in "Headlights." When the intensity and
speed of the music pick up at 3:18, the photos flash before us more quickly, and the cuts between
photos become much more disjointed. This disjunctive editing signals to the audience that they
should be intellectually engaged at this point of the song (Corrigan, p.470), especially since most
parts of the video implement continuity editing in order to tell a fluid story. Choosing to have such a
different pace of editing from the other parts of the video in this instance shows just how big of a
step for Eminem this song is. Editing is manipulative, meaning that the editing forces us to see what
the filmmaker wants us to see (Kolker, p.15), and Lee was able to edit "Headlights" in such a way
that Eminem's feelings and purpose for writing the song were clearly expressed and
