This document analyzes the lyrics of the song "Good Intentions" by Disclosure. It summarizes each line or couplet and draws the following conclusions:
The song is about a broken intimate relationship where the singer acknowledges they did not try hard enough and could not give their partner their best. It becomes clear the relationship has ended, though it hurts both people. The singer takes full blame, admitting they let their partner down and did not trust themselves. They repeat that they had good intentions in the relationship but still put their partner through pain. The analysis suggests showing both characters' perspectives and emotions to portray the miscommunication between partners that can lead relationships to fall apart.
2. BABY, YOU CAN BELIEVE ME WHEN I SAY I TRIED MY BEST
BUT THERE'S NO OTHER WAY
YOU DESERVE THE WORLD, I COULDN'T GIVE YOU LESS
Here we have the opening lyrics to the song, and to me I feel that they are already
setting the story for what the song Is about. We already have the message of a boy
who is telling this friend or lover that she ‘deserves the world’ giving the audience
insight to how much he cares for her. Although we are unaware of what it is that
has happened we are already able to figure out that the person singing has messed
up and that the song is clearly based around the issues of this broken relationship.
The opening word being ‘baby’ tells the audience that the relationship we are
hearing about is more intimate than say a brother and sister giving us more detail
as to who it is that the sing is based around. And again the idea of the line ‘I
couldn’t give you less’ suggests that whoever it is singing, didn't’t try hard enough
in the relationship and this knowledge is clear to them now.
3. BUT I'M NOT PERFECT THE WAY YOU'RE PERFECT
AND THOUGH IT HURTS, YEAH, IT HURTS TO SAY GOODBYE
Following on from this we having a second outro from the song, and looking
closer at theses lyrics it becomes clear to the audience that the lyrics are
based around a relationship that has ended. Again the use of the words
perfect show us that the person singing cares about their partner as they call
them such nice names, first baby and now perfect. We understand that the
person is not happy with the relationship ending as they talk about it hurting.
However, this line is followed by them saying ‘it hurts to say goodbye’
showing that they are able to accept that they aren’t getting better and leaving
it to us to figure out why they aren’t getting back together. Here we are able
to figure out that there are two sides to the story and it is left up to the
audiences interpretation of what we think happened to the relationship.
4. I KNOW I LET YOU DOWN
IT WASN'T THAT YOUR LOVE WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH
COULDN'T STICK AROUND
IT'S ONLY IN MYSELF THAT I DIDN'T TRUST
The first verse clarifies for us that it was the person singing who messed up and it is
clear that they are showing signs of regret. Through this verse we see not one
negative thing being said about the other person in the relationship, sticking to the
idea that it is the person singing who is to blame for the end of this relationship.
With moments like this I wanted to show through the video the moments in the
relationship where it did go wrong and show it through the perspective of the girl
and how it was that she was being treated. With the last line saying ‘It’s only in
myself that I didn’t trust’ it shows us that that the other person in the relationship
was fully aware of what they where doing and how they felt proving once again that
it is their fault and not hers.
5. I HAD GOOD INTENTIONS
I HAD GOOD INTENTIONS
The repetition of this line shows us how persistent this person is to show
to their partner that through everything they went through none of it was
meant intentionally and it is clear that they’re still thinking about it.
I will show this in my video through the car scenes where we see the boys
emotions and we see him all alone, which will be good when understand
who is who in the video. I don’t want the male character to come across as
the antagonist in the video due to him being so open to his mistakes I want
the audience to have an equal understanding for both of the characters.
6. AND IT'S A SHAME
OH, IRONIC THAT I WENT AND PUT YOU THROUGH
I TAKE THE BLAME
CAUSE THE TRUTH, THERE'S REALLY NOTHING YOU COULD DO
Again he continues to mention that it was all his fault and in the line
“there's really nothing you could do” this emphasizes on the fact that this
relationship was falling apart without her even trying to prevent it from
happening and inevitably this break was meant to happen either way. My
intentions for the video are not to show the bad sides in relationships but
instead look at the mis-communication between partners no matter how
close the bond
