2. Film Narrative
The short film follows a narrative of a young
girl as she tells us about her relationship, it
is being spoken about through a voiceover,
as if she is reading some kind of speech
(turns out she is rehearsing what to say to
her friends). At the beginning of the short
film we are led to believe that it is following
a young couple and their love story, but it is
then later shown to us that the love we are
seeing is a lie, and she is being abused by
her partner. The audience are the outsiders
in the short film, and almost act like the
friends who can’t see that Andie is being
abused.
The voiceover that is included within the
short film comes Poet, Sylvia Plath, which is
an excerpt from her love letter to her
Husband, Ted Hughes. This piece worked, as
it was explaining a feeling of love, but it is
explained in more of a raw way, it sounds as
if she was in serious pain being away from
her Husband.
3. Characters
The main characters partner is hidden, only their
body shown, as I felt that not showing their face
would then express to the audience the power that
they hold over the main character and
The main character will wear white to symbolise
innocence, whilst the partner will wear darker
clothes to symbolise the darker side to them.
However this will not initially be completely
obvious, the main character possibly just wearing a
white top with a pattern or print. The print possibly
even showing a side to that persons personality.
4. Film World
The short film is based mostly inside the girls house
and her room, only a few scenes taking place outside.
Her room has photos of her when she was a child
placed on the walls and her personal belongings
scattered around the room, which allows the audience
to understand the character more and get to know
more about this character and who she is and what she
is like, but there is space for the audience to make this
up for themselves and understand the character more
through visuals and how the character acts, without
being explicitly told.
Also, seeing the character’s room and her own space
can make the audience feel closer to the character, so
when it comes to the audience figuring out that she is
being abused, they may feel more sympathetic
towards the issue.
5. Film Style
I want my short film to begin with soft and warm colour
lighting (pink, orange and yellows), to almost resemble the
dream like state the main character is about her relationship,
and also how the audience and people surrounding her are
viewing the relationship, but we are then pulled out of this
dream like state with her, and as we begin to see that this
relationship isn’t as perfect as its made out to be, harsher
lighting in then introduced, such as; blues and greys. Blue and
grey coloured lighting can also resemble how the character is
now feeling and the sudden lighting change can reflect her
sudden change in mood. She is possibly feeling blue.
Once we understand that the protagonist is being abused, the
editing style becomes more fast pace, with fast cuts and quick
transitions, to symbolise to the audience how quickly a
person can change (the abusers) and also, for the editing style
to contrast how it was at the beginning got the short film,
before we understood what was happening to our main
character
6. Sound
For the music in my short film, I wanted to include some kind
of instrumental accompanying the voiceover, as including a
song with lyrics may overpower the character speaking, and
the voiceover is more important than the music, as the
voiceover carries the narrative of the Short Film.
The song I’m choosing for the background music of my Short
Film is “Cherry Wine” by Hozier, either played on the piano, or
the guitar. I chose this song as it foreshadows an abuse
relationship. It has a joyful and uplifting tune, and almost
sounds like a love song, but when you listen to the lyrics you
are able to see that it is the complete opposite, following the
theme of my Short Film. I want to show a ‘loving’ relationship
at the start, but the slowly you begin to see it fall apart, and
the truth about the relationship is revealed.
I also want their to be white noise/ringing in the background
of the shot when the audience is finally shown that she is
being abused, and for this to play over the flashback scenes of
‘happy’ moment and the violent scenes, to possibly resemble
the main characters mind, and how it’s hard for her to
remember the bad within the relationship.
7. Target Audience
The target audience for my piece would be teenagers from the
age of 12, and above. I have decided to aim the target audience
towards the age you begin secondary school, as around this time
you are coming more into your own, and are experiencing these
things, and a short film covering such a raw issue could be
extremely beneficial to how they both react and engage with
certain things. As the short film surrounds an abusive
relationship, this may help certain people who think they are the
victim to an abusive relationship, or maybe they know someone
who may be getting abused. The subject of the short film can also
help bring light to the topic of abuse, and awareness to people
who possibly don’t know much about it.
