• School holiday - summer holiday July and August, Christmas holiday about a
week, 2 days in autumn and 2 days at Easter, spring holiday 1 week
• Types of schools : boarding schools – a few , state - most, church - few
grammar and secondary schools, private schools

• Primary education - compulsory school attendance - basic schools – 9 years
(age 6 – 15)
• two levels: primary 5 years and lower secondary level 4 years,
• alternative - after primary level to grammar school (gymnasium) – 8 years (first four
compulsory school attendance 12 – 15)

• Secondary education - grammar schools (gymnasium) 8 years (age 12 –19) or 4
years (age 15 – 19), general education, leaving exams – “maturita” (A level),
most students continue studies at tertiary level
• special schools : technical, economical, pedagogical, medicine…
4 years – 15 – 19, leaving exams – “maturita” (A levels) – some students go
to work but most continue studies at tertiary level
• vocational schools – 2 or 3 years age 15 – (17)18, leaving exams – job
qualifications
