Grease – Research for my Brief
I asked ten students from different year groups the following questions about the
marketing material for Grease made by Wolverhampton Grand Theatre for their
production. This is a summary of their answers.
1. Does the marketing make clear what the product is?
a. Yes, completely.
2. Does the marketing make clear when and where the show is going to be on?
a. No – the marketing focusses on the show being on and shows a logo
and some of the stars. If you know anything about Grease at all it will
all make perfect sense. If you don’t then you can get a very good idea
from the marketing of what the show will be like.
3. Do you like the colour scheme for the marketing? Do you think it matches
the product?
a. I think it’s clearly aimed at women rather than men because of the
stereotypical use of pink as the dominant colour. Maybe you can say
it’s also aimed at men because two of the three characters are women
and they use ‘sexy Sandy’ from the end of the film rather than her
look earlier in the film.
4. Do you like the use of fonts and images on the marketing? Do you think
they match the products?
a. Yes – the artwork done with the name of the show helps to show
what it is like.
5. Would the marketing make you more or less likely to go and see the show?
a. About the same – I wouldn’t normally go to the theatre for anything
at all unless it was an organised trip. It would help me choose to go
and see it at school.
I think the over pink background is too much for what I want to do and I would
make something featuring pink but less dominantly.
