The meaning of its component words is not predicted by
any rule of grammar.

with open arms – cordially
add fuel to the fire – to provoke further dispute
fair and square – to do things honestly
born with a golden spoon- born from a very rich family
4. put one’s foot forward – to do one’s best work
laughing stock – an object of ridicule
wolf in sheep’s clothing – hypocrite
bread and butter – means of living
good riddance - get rid of disagreeable person
5. fish out of water – outside his natural surroundings
crocodile tears – insincere sympathy
the bubble has burst – positive position has
encountered a problem
cold shoulder – unsympathetic treatment
7. The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When
there is a gap between one’s real and one’ declared aims,
one turns, as it were, instinctively to long words and
exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink.
