2. Current
Affairs-
exploring
the genre
• The definition of current affairs is ”events of political or
social interest and importance happening in the world
at the present time’’
• This means the information in the magazine has to be up
to date and relevant
• Depending on my audience, some up to date information
may not be relevant
• Dennis mostly has red top magazines and factual in their
current affairs section
• I will have to identify what features of current affairs will
interest my target audience, how to report those events,
and how often to revisit them.
• Humour is included in some of their current affairs
magazine through pictures
4. Products
and ideas
• After researching Dennis’ current affairs magazines,
they seem to focus on 3 main areas; finance, science
and nature, and international stories
• ‘TheWeek’ has a comedic approach to current affairs
where as ‘TheWeekDay’ and ‘MondayWeek’ are more
serious
• Two of their magazines are for younger children; ‘The
Week Junior’ and ‘science + nature”.These magazines
include more photos and colour
• The target audience for the younger magazines are 8-
14 yrs and 8-15 yrs.
• The other magazines are targeted to an older
audience, 35-54
• This means I will have to incorporate a balance
between the two as my target audience is 16-25yr olds
5. What I
should
include in
my
magazine
• My magazine should be suitable for a socially
conscious, 16-25, middle to upmarket demographic.
This means I need to be specific with the current affairs
I am including in my magazine, as well as the layout
and design.This includes;
• Current political status
• Sophisticated colour scheme with a mix of factual and
humour based images
• Short and to the point information
• Biased information specific to the audience
• Targeted at a professional audience (or aspiring)
• Should be relatable and inclusive
