2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR
SOCIAL GROUPS?
 My product was a Rock’n’roll/ Indie based music
magazine. This means that the music and artists
shown all fall into this genre of music. Obviously
anyone can like any band no matter who they are,
but magazines try and attract the part of the
consumer that likes that style of music so uses the
stereotypes based around that genre and enhances
them to attract there target audience. I chose to do
two genres of music as I though it would broaden
my target audience and mean I could explore more
aspects creatively rather than be restricted by the
confines of one genre.
 To attract people into the magazine, the people who
like that genre of music need to feel a connection to
the artist or song type. This may be clothing style,
hair style or personality.
 When it came to clothes I based my model very
much on stereotypes that are connected to Indie
Rock, this meant using a leather jacket, slim jeans
etc. Most people can see an artist with a leather
jacket and make the assumption that they are some
form of rock artist. This is the idea of stereotypes
and how they show the social groups they belong
to.
 The way to appeal to certain social groups is to
become like them. My target audience is people
who enjoy Indie Rock magazine so I use
stereotypes of these sort of people to base my
product on. I found during my STA’s that Indie/
Rock artists are white, male, wild behaviour,
aggressive and use instruments. To appeal to my
target audience I used these to create my product.
To go against certain conventions I made my artist
female (also branching out to attract female
consumers) however other than that I stuck with the
conventions that I had found.
