2. GURKUL SYSTEM OF EDUCATION IN
ANCIENT TIME:
Gurukul was a type of school in India, residential in nature, with pupils living
in proximity to the guru. In a gurukul, students resided together as equals,
irrespective of their social standing, learnt from the guru and helped the guru
in his day-to-day life. At the end of his studies, the pupil offered dakshina
(fees) to the guru. The gurudakshina is a traditional gesture of
acknowledgment, respect and thanks.
3. India has a long history of organized education. The Gurukul system of education
in which students were taught orally and the knowledge was passed from one
generation to the next. The gurukul system is an ancient learning
method. Gurukulam has existed since the vedic age. Their main motto is to
develop the knowledge and they were highly focused on education. The Gurus train
their students with meditations, yogas and other standards. The gurukul system
was the only education system known at the time. The students gained their
education with the in-depth knowledge. Not only the education but also they had
been taught essential aspects for their cultured and disciplined life. The Shisyas
lived under the gurukul roof with the good brotherhood and there was a good
humanity, love and discipline.
4. ROLE OF GURU:
Guru is made up of two words Gu and Ru where Gu means Darkness and Ru
Means one who removes darkness of ignorance through the light of knowledge.
• The scriptures say that Brahma the creator Vishnu the preserver Siva the
destroyer
• Destroys the effects of bad karma
• Eternal relationship and Responsible for attain moksha (liberation)
• Preserves the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of the disciple
• Indian culture puts special emphasis on the guru-disciple relationship. Real
guru is one who has attained Self-realization.
5. ADVANTAGE OF GURUKUL EDUCATION SYSTEM:
They were taught impeccable manners and values that life is
based on
Along with practical knowledge they also received knowledge on
various aspects of life.
Children from all classes of society lived under the gurukul roof
as brothers.
6. CONVERSION OF INDIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM TO
WESTERN EDUCATION SYSTEM:
The English Education Act was a legislative Act of the Council
of India in 1835 giving effect to a decision in 1835 by Lord William
Bentinck Governor-General of British India, to reallocate funds
the East India Company was required by the British Parliament to
spend on education and literature in India. Formerly, they had
supported traditional Muslim and Hindu education and the
publication of literature in the native learned tongues
(Sanskrit and Persian); henceforward they were to support
establishments teaching a Western curriculum with English as
the language of instruction. Together with other measures
promoting English as the language of administration and of the
higher law courts (replacing Persian), this led eventually to
English becoming one of the Popular languages of India, rather
than simply the native tongue of its foreign rulers.
7. The process of indian education system now is followed by four
major steps.
1st: A child is put into in a Kindergarten School
2nd: Secondary Education
3rd: Higher Secondary Education
4th: Graduation(with a major subject)
Then further education contains Post Graduation,Phd,Post Doc.
8. Cultural Crisis:
It is also true that that cultural crisis is turning the importance of education into
a turmoil.People are being educated by just whatever is mentioned in syllabus
apart from that they feel no requirement of literature, cutural aspects, music and
even art.Dr. Freud mentioned a peson can be grown in different fields but if he
does not care about Humanities there is no need to be literate.
Indian parents also nowadays are stubborn to their superstitious belief that
merely they can think there is future if their son or daughter reads
humanities, they should be in science because it gives work, and others like
poet, painter,a musician just dies with no work.It is true that we are in huge
cultural crisis and that surely decays our literacy.
9. Nowadays one can hardly recall a personality who is graduating on a subject and
he/she is creative also in whatever he/she is studying .
Apart from studying if that theory of pages can also be reflected in real world,it
truely touches mind of an individual who is pursuing that course and also the
pressure reduces immensely.
It is always necessary to work happily than to work hard.
A mechanical engineer must also know how to repair a water pump in his home
if it gets damaged than only being a tagged engineer who will seek for high
profile jobs later on.He is not particularly bound to perform such operations
back in his home but The basic things are the most important things if you
are creative.
10. Suicide of Students:
In 2016 the number of suicides had increased to 230,314. Suicide was the most common cause
of death in both the age groups of 15–29 years and 15–39 years.
About 800,000 people commit suicide worldwide every year, of these 135,000 (17%) are
residents of India,a nation with 17.5% of world population. Between 1987 and 2007, the
suicide rate increased from 7.9 to 10.3 per 100,000, with higher suicide rates in southern and
eastern states of India. In 2012, Tamil Nadu (12.5% of all suicides), Maharashtra (11.9%)
and West Bengal (11.0%) had the highest proportion of suicides.Among large population
states, Tamil Nadu and Kerala had the highest suicide rates per 100,000 people in 2012. The
male to female suicide ratio has been about 2:1.
Estimates for number of suicides in India vary. For example, a study published in Lancet
projected 187,000 suicides in India in 2010, while official data by the Government of India
claims 134,600 suicides in the same year.
11. Learn Freely !!!
Proper system cannot make education boring, education is something that one
should feel by their own,it cannot be injected just by providing immense
pressure. In Bolpur,Shantiniketan students are taught freely beneath the trees
that also make them feel close to natural life.Once a child in Bolpur was
asked,’do you like study?’
The child replied,’ We play all day long so we get bored and start reading.’
This is what should be applicable,it is not necessary to increase the statistics on
literates just to be compared with other countries, but it is necessary to construct
an education system where one can be really enjoy the process of being literate
and of course an education system cannot be justified with only marks.
12. What System Actually Wants:
Little learning is a dangerous thing !!!
The statistical increment of literates is not necessary it can be helpful for the
sytsem administratives but not for us ,we may face lots of hardles to be properly
educated because the system actually believes ‘The more they read, more they
know and the less they care about the system.’
