• First education commission of indepedent India
• Appointed in 1948 by Government of India
• Chairman – Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Former VC of Banaras
Hindu University and Second president of India
• Inaugurated by Abdul Kalam Azad, the then minister of
education
• Consisted of 10 members including Dr Radhakrishnan, Dr Zakir
Hussain and Dr Lakshmanswami Mudaliar
• Submitted the report in 25th August 1949

Reconstruction of universities was essential for the socio-
economic development after independence.
• To study the problems of university education in India and to
suggest improvements for the development of university
education.
