This document discusses interactive surfaces that can dynamically change shape and interact with physical objects. It describes how these surfaces work using over 1,000 individually controlled plastic rods and motors. A Kinect sensor detects motion over the surface and the computer controls actuators and rods to transform the surface's shape accordingly. Applications include interactive 3D platforms, physical game boards, human-computer interaction, and reconfigurable surfaces like pin beds.
