We do that through the products we offer, and by engaging ourselves in the debate about and activities to promote prevention and early detection of NCDs. That is why we participated in the UN high-level on NCDs last year in New York, that is why we are engaged in better understanding patient and doctors attitudes through the DAWN program, and that is why we support numerous education and screening activities around the world. But we also take our own medicine, so to say, when it comes to preventing chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease NovoHealth is Novo Nordisk’s worldwide employee health programme seeking to develop a workplace culture that promotes and supports healthy living for all employees – an opportunity for Novo Nordisk to practise what we preach. NovoHealth inspires healthy living among Novo Nordisk employees as a means to prevent type 2 diabetes and other lifestyle-driven diseases. NovoHealth is focusing on promoting a healthy lifestyle among employees and the programme is built on four global standards, ensuring that Novo Nordisk staff has access to healthy food, a smoke-free work environment and smoke cessation, physical activity and individual health checks. The Global standards are implemented with respect to local culture and norms, so they help to drive a lot of engagement among employees. For instance, our Brazilian affiliate have offered inspiring dancing lessons to employees for a number of years, and with a slight modification we have now adopted this approach in Denmark, and it has been an enormous success. Sharing best practises is an important parameter of having a global program like NovoHealth. Three years ago we invested in commuting bikes at larger affiliates in Denmark, to promote healthy environmental friendly transportation between sites. We could just have bought normal bikes from a normal bike shop, but instead we found a way to actually make a difference in Africa with our company bikes. We teamed up with a social entrepreneur who is improving transportation in Africa, primarily Tanzania. They have set up local bike repair shops in Tanzania and then ship used bikes from Denmark to Tanzania, where they are fixed and improved to fit local needs. So the bikes that our employees are using will after 2½ years be sent to Tanzania, where they will be rebuilt and used to transport medicine, food and people – we just shipped the first batch of bikes to Africa.
We have now made these voluntary health checks for almost a decade – and completed up to four rounds since the start in Denmark 2004. For legal and confidentiality reason, each program is implemented differently in different countries – except that they all are voluntary, free and implemented by a third party. The difference in local design prevents us from consolidating results at global level. But I have the opportunity to give you some insight into the health checks carried out in Denmark. These checks are the longest running and largest - measured by number of participants; more than 7000 employees completed the health check in 2009-2010.
So - one thing doing the measurements – and allowing the individual employee to getter a better understanding of his or her own health status. This empowerment of the individual is worth while in itself. But the health checks also allow for a broader analysis across the organisation, comparison with other companies and comparison between rounds – so we can assess whether the general health status is improving or not. And we can look into some of the reasons for these changes – in the right or the wrong direction. Let me give you some insights into the findings we have made when comparing more than 4,000 individuals from the two most recent rounds. NN employees have an overall well-being that is better than a benchmark of similar companies in Denmark We also see that there is a strong link between self-perceived physical and psychological health and the actual measurement – in other words: most employees who participated have a pretty good ideas about their health status.
