Editor's Notes
The multi-slice SENSE reconstruction model is from Alan Chu’s multiband fmri paper. X is the image domain signal of different slices, and s is the signal from all the channels, c is the sensitivity, Q is NUFFT, and M is the phase modulation pattern, which will be explained later. In order to get signal from multiple slices simultaneously, just replace the z-direction single band pulse with multiband pulse and achieve simultaneous excitation.
In our case, we acquire three slices simultaneously, and there is concentric ring in the x-y plane, and three points in kz direction. It will start from kz plane, repeating on the first ring and record the FID, and then go to a positive kz, acquiring a ring with different radius, then go to negative kz, go back to zero plane, and repeat this process, For the corresponding single band pulse sequence, there won’t be encoding in the z direction, so it goes backs to 2D k-space with three sets of interleaves. In the parallel imaging scenario, the kz can be interpreted as gradient inducing phase modulation, which is a similar concept as blip CAIPI. So when kz=0, no phase modulation, kz 1/6, in our case, top slice will be phased by 120, and bottom slice will be phased by -120. It is similar when kz=-1/6 Now you can see the different phase modulation pattern of the three slices, which will induce FOV shift in case of cartesian k-space, but here it will induce image transformation9
