2. What is pragmatics?
• Pragmatics is the study of meaning as
communicated by a speaker (or writer)
and interpreted by a listener (or
reader)
3. The kinds of pragmatics
• There are many kinds of pragmatics
such as deixis, inference,
presupposition, implicature, speech
acts, politeness and so on.
4. Deixis
• Deixis is certain function word that
refers to parts of the physical – social-
temporal context of the speaker or
writer and their referents can only be
known that context (it can only be
interpreted through their contexts).
5. The kinds of Deixis
• There are three kinds of deixis;
1. personal deixis
2. spatial deixis
3. temporal deixis.
6. First is Personal Deixis
Personal deixis is the form word that can
be used to indicate person. E.g. I, you,
they, we, and so on.
7. Second is Spatial Deixis
Spatial Deixis is the form word that can
be used to indicate location. It refers
to adverb ‘’here’’ and ‘’ there’’, and
the demonstratives ‘’this’’ and ‘’that’’.
8. Third is Temporal Deixis
Temporal deixis is the form word that
can be used to indicate the time, such
as now, then, yesterday, today,
tomorrow, last week, and so on,
9. Speech Act
The utterance can be used to perform
the act.
There are three things in speech act;
Locution, Illocution and Perlocution.
10. Locution, Illocution, and
Perlocution
- Locution :the actual word uttered
example = what time it is?
- Illocution : the intention behind the
words uttered
example = wanting an
apology/explanation for someone being
late.
- Perlocution : the influence of the words
on the istener
example = listener apologises/explains
11. • Politeness is defined as using
communicative strategies to create
and maintain social harmony.
This can be done in various ways:
- being contextually appropriate
- following social and cultural norms
12. • Impoliteness is defined as engaging in
aggressive facework in particular
contexts to cause social disruption.
This can be done in various ways:
- the speaker intentionally attacks face
- the listener perceives a face attack
13. • Implicature is defined as "the implied
meaning generated intentionally by
the speaker. These meanings are often
made covertly, hidden using politeness
strategies.
