3. INTRODUCTION
The pulmonary route has gained increasing importance in the
recent development of drug delivery system , due to its unique
advantages than any others routes. Pulmonary route has been
used to treat various respiratory diseases like asthma, COPD
(Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases),respiratory infection
etc.
Using devices like dry powder inhalation (DPI), pressurized
meterd-dose inhalation(pMDI) , Nebulizers for the delivery of
drug.

5. ADVANTAGES OF PDDS
Delivery of high concentration drug directly to the diseases
site.
Rapid clinical response.
By pass the barriers like poor gastrointestinal absorption and
first-pass metabolism in the liver.
It is a non-invasive, needle free delivery system.
Suitable for wide range of substance.
Less harsh for low enzymatic environment.

6. DISADVANTAGES OF PDDS
Aerosol devices might be difficult to use.
Drug absorption may be limited by the physical barrier of the
mucus layer.
Drug can be interaction with the mucus membrane.
Drug particle size matter too much.
6
7. ABSORPTION OF DRUG
1. Through intercellular junctions.
2. Transcellular diffusion.
3. Transport mediate absorption.
4. Vesicle Mediate transport.

8. DEVICES USED FOR PDDS
A. Dry Powder Inhalation (DPI) devices
B. The pressurized Meter Dose Inhalation (pMDI) devices.
C. Nebulizers

9. DRY POWDER INHALATION DEVICES
(DPI)
A dry powder inhaler (DPI) is a device that deliver drug molecule to the lungs in
the form of a dry powder. DPI are commonly used to treat respiratory diseases
such as asthma, copd etc.
The drug formulation must be contain as free flowing powder form, which can be
prepared by spary-drying or micronize blending method & should be deliver by
a suitable inert carrier.

10. PRESSURIZED METER DOSE INHALATION
(pMDI) DEVICE
The pressurized meter dose inhaler (pMDI) are use to treat diseases like asthma,
copd etc. The metering valve is designed to deliver a precise aerosol amount
(20-100 micro. L.) at each time.
The key components of the pMDI device (propellants, formulated solution,
metering valve size and actuator) all play role in the delivery of drug molecule or
in medication.

11. NEBULIZERS
Nebulizer is a device, which is used for delivery of drug product into the
pulmonary route.
It use oxygen, compressed air or ultrasonic power to break up solutions and
suspensions into small aerosol droplet that can be directly inhaled from the
mouth-piece of the device.

12. CONCLUSION
From the Ancient time, we use inhalation therapy
included the use of various leaves from plants, vapour
from aromatic plant like balsam, myrrh etc.
The large surface area of the human lung, along with its
rich blood supply, rapid onset of drug action with high
bioavailability, and other physiological advantages,
make it a potential route for treating asthma, COPD,
and other pulmonary disorders.
