TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
BETTER NOW – POST
MALONE (IDEA 1)
This song is about improving and becoming better at
something, so it could be interpreted to the main
character in the music video becoming better at sport, it
can show their progression and training throughout
practice and towards the end it shows them becoming
professional. This suits the target audience (age 16 – 24)
because it spreads quite a motivational message to carry
on going and to not give up. This is good for this age
group because lots of people who this is aimed at could
be in education and they may enjoy playing sport and it
shows they can make progress and become better. This
music video would probably be filmed outside or in a
hall, with the main character being the most important to
the storyline.
IDEA 2
This music video could also be interpreted in a music
way. The main character could be an artist or learning an
instrument, and it could show their progress and how
they’re “better now” at their instrument, or even better as
an artist. This suits the target audience because many
people age 16 – 24 could want to become an artist or a
performer and it could help them and motivate them to
make progress and to work on their music. This music
video could be filmed anywhere. But most likely inside
with some props to use (instrument, microphone etc.)
IDEA 3
This song could have several flashbacks to when a big
artist was younger whilst they’re performing and it could
be the main character remembering all the big events
they’ve had to show their progress in their music career.
This main target audience (16 – 24) are teenagers /
young adults, so this would show them to work hard so
they can be successful in the future. This music video
would have a lot of effects for the flashbacks and it could
have a lot of close up or over shoulder camera shots to
show the artists facial expression and emotions.
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
1 – DRAKE (FEATURING LIL
DURK) – LAUGH NOW CRY
LATER
This is Drake’s latest music video and is filmed in the
Nike Headquarters. It has lots of different camera angles
and movements including over shoulder, close up,
panoramas, medium shots, longshots, POV etc. In this
music video lots of different scenes take place, Drake
goes round in a Nike store, plays golf, basketball and
rides a jetski. Jeremy D. Larson described the music
video as ‘effortlessly cool and simple’. Which is because
it is a fun, easy to watch mainstream music video for the
purpose of Drake promoting Nike’s brand and for his
new album.
2 – STORMZY (FEATURING ED
SHEERAN AND BURNA BOY) –
OWN IT
This music video came out in November 2019 and is a
very mainstream and popular music video for Stormzy’s
album. It was filmed in several locations in London. This
music video included several camera angles and
movements such as close up, medium shot, zoom outs,
etc. It uses natural lighting at the start and also green
lights throughout the music video in the club scenes.
This music videos purpose was for a mainstream music
video for a single from Stormzy’s album, Heavy Is The
Head.
3 – KENDRICK LAMAR, SZA –
ALL THE STARS
This song was made for the Marvel film ‘Black Panther’. A lot of
CGI and editing went into this music video. It was made for a
film with a very big budget so the music video also had a big
budget behind it. In one of the scenes, Kendrick Lamar was
walking through a forest with several black panthers behind
him, to connote this music video is linked with the film. During
SZA’s singing, she was edited into a background with lots of
stars (which links to name of the song), which also proves the
music video had a lot of time and editing into it. It has lots of
medium shots, over shoulder, close up shots etc.
4 – DRAKE – TOOSIE SLIDE
This song and music video was for his mix tape he released in
2020 called Dark lane Demo Tapes. Due to the pandemic, the
music video had to be filmed in Drake’s house. This music
video was for mainstream purpose because of a celebrity called
Toosie created his own dance for it, which Drake re-created in
his house in the music video. This music video had several
medium shots and over shoulder shots as the camera follows
Drake around his house. The lighting in the music video was
his house lighting, which is why towards the end of the music
video he went outside and the music video was quite dark
(because it was filmed at night), with fireworks in the
background.
5 – AJ TRACEY (FEATURING
MABEL) – WEST TEN
This music video was released at the start of July 2020. This
music video was filmed in England. It has lots of colourful and
different lights throughout the music video which contrast with
the dark night background (the music video was filmed at
night). It also has a lot of flashing lights and bright lights
throughout the music video, which fits with the theme because
it is a song made for summer. It has several camera shots like
close up, longshot, medium shots and colourful lighting. Also,
it is quite a fast paced music video which suits the song
because it is quite a fast, hip hop, pop style song. It is a very
mainstream music video, especially because it has stayed in the
official charts for a while.
6 – POST MALONE
(FEATURING TY DOLLA SIGN) -
PSYCHO
This music video was released in march 2018 and in this music
video you can tell that they had a big budget for it, Post Malone
is riding an armored personnel carrier and is filmed near an
aircraft wreckage. The last part of the music video is filmed
where it is snowing, which is a contrast to the first part, being
in a sandy desert. It uses several camera angles such as a
medium shot, longshot of Post Malone in the armored vehicle,
and several close up shots. It has 3 point lighting towards the
end, as it is filmed at night in the snow location. Also, natural
lighting is used mostly in the desert scenes.
7 – POST MALONE
(FEATURING SWAE LEE) -
SUNFLOWER
This music video was released January 2019 and is a single for
the ‘Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse’ soundtrack. The music
video is a black and white, live action video. It shows Post
Malone and Swae Lee in the studio making the song, and them
during a live performance. There is several close-up shots of
them in the studio recording the song into a microphone, and
over shoulder shots and medium shots whilst they’re on stage
performing.
POTENTIAL SONGS
Drake – Gods Plan, this song is about Drake’s success
and how he got to where he is in his career now. I can do
this in a sport way, showing the main character (acting as
a professional) and how he got to where he is now.
POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Flashbacks, this is because the main storyline will have
flashbacks to when the main character was practicing
and training, and it shows how they got to where they
are now.
POV shots, this is because it will show their point of view
playing football, so the audience can focus on what the
main character is doing.
Panoramas, so the audience can see where the music
video is set.
Various camera angles such as; medium shot, long shot,
over shoulder etc.
Also, various camera techniques such as; pan, zoom etc.
CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
The flashbacks can be in slow motion and maybe black
and white, to show it was in the past. Also, it will have
text on the screen to show that it is a flashback, for
example ’two years ago’ in the bottom
When a goal is scored, the background of the scene
could change colour, this make the music video stand
out and be brighter.
Slow motion could be used when a goal is about to be
scored to build up suspense.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
It could start off with panorama shots of the field and the
setting, to show the setting to make it clear for the
target audience.
It could have several flashbacks to when the character
was practicing at football and losing.
The main character could be playing football so it shows
the progression throughout the music video with
flashbacks, this suits my target audience because
football is a popular sport for ages 16 – 24.
Spreads a positive motivational message to carry on
practicing.
SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
It spreads a positive message to carry on practicing, which is good
for my target audience
It will need someone else in the music video to film some parts and
to be in it.
It could have bright effects when a goal is scored to make it quite
bright more detailed.
It will have several editing techniques such as, slow motion, black
and white, text on screen, etc.
It could have a wide range angles and shots, including, medium
shot, close up, longshot, panoramas, POV, etc.
The lighting will be natural lighting, as the music video will mainly
be filmed outside.
SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
We will make sure we can film in a field/ area where it is
set.
I will need 1 extra person to film some scenes and be
one of the characters.
I will need to make sure we get lots of different scenes
because it is a 3 minute song.
The weather, if it is bad weather we may not be able to
film some scenes.
FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist – Gods Plan by Drake
Brief biographical background – This hip hop, pop track
by Drake is the lead single from his album Scorpion in
2018. The song is about his success and fame in his
career. It was released January 19, 2018.
Links to other artists – Other artists Drake is linked to
are: Jeremih, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz,
PartyNextDoor and more.
Genre info – This song is a hip hop / mixed with pop
song.
FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The song is 3 minutes 18 seconds and is a song about
Drake’s success, so the summary of my music video is a
successful sport player who gets flashbacks to when he
couldn’t play well and when he was practicing and
training to be better. This idea links to the song lyrics
about him becoming successful. This spreads a positive
message for my target audience too. The song isn’t that
fast paced, so the shots and editing will be normal
paced, so the music video can match the song.
FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
My music video has a narrative to it, as the song is about
Drake’s success, I’ve interpreted this music video to be
the success of the main character, who is a successful
sport player. The narrative will be the main character will
be playing football and he will think about when he was
training to be better and practicing, these will be the
flashbacks. I will need to get a wide variety of shots and
camera angles and movements so I can put them into the
3 minute track. I will need to film most of it before the
week of editing outside of college.
TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
I will be making a music video for the song Gods Plan by
Drake, this was a hit song in 2018 for his album
Scorpion.
The track is about Drake's success in his career, so I will
be interpreting the music video in a different way, it will
be about a group of people who will going to play
football and it will show the flashbacks to when
they were practising and they weren't that good. The
song isn't that fast paced, so the music video will be
medium paced, it will have some longer shots and some
quicker shots combined. The flashbacks will have text on
screen to make it clearer.
We will need my phone for a camera, to film the music
video. We will also need a football and suitable clothing
to wear depending on the weather that day.
LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
We will be filming the music video in a park in Norton, it
is easily accessible and free to enter. The weather
shouldn’t be too much of a problem, it might just change
the suitable clothing we will wear.
EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
To film my music video we will need my phone to use as
a camera, we will also need appropriate clothing for the
day of filming depending on the weather. Also, we won't
need any resources from college, I will have all my
equipment (such as a football, tennis racket, basketball,
baseball). I will also be using a car for the first part of the
music video, which I will film at home. We will also need
Adobe PremierPro to edit this music video, which I will do
in college.
FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I will edit my music video in college on the Mac's using
Adobe PremierPro. I will do this by uploading all my
music video shots to OneDrive, so I can access them on
the college mac to edit all the footage to make the music
video. Also, I wont need any other specialist facilities.
PERSONNEL
My team is me and my friends (myself, Karl Shepherd
and Sam Smith) on Saturday 17th October afternoon,
everyone is available on this day. We can all get to the
location of filming so this will be quicker and easier for
us to film on the day. All of us will be actors in the music
video.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The props we will be using are several sports items I
have, such as a football, basketball etc, also I will be
using a car at home for one of the shots at the start of
the music video (I won't be driving). We will also be using
two football goals, but they're already at the park. We
will be wearing casually clothing, depending on the
weather of that day. If it is warmer weather we'll be
wearing shorts or a t shirt, whereas if the weather is
worse we will wear jeans, a hoodie or a coat etc.
TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
 Pre-visualisation and concept boards
 Storyboarding
 Shot list
PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:
http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for-
hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
PRE-VISUALISATION
- The lighting we will use will be natural lighting. Filming
this music video in a park in the afternoon will mean it
will be light for the music video, this also gives off a
realistic effect to the music video.
- I will be bringing all the props to the area of filming on
the film day, these will include a football, cricket
bat, basketball etc. I will be filming some POV shots for
the start of the music video at home, which will include a
car (won't be driving it).
- There will be a clear divide between the flashbacks and
the present time, it will be obvious with text on the
screen, and the present time scenes will have more
vibrant editing, such as the sky will change colour for a
few seconds, this is a technique I have seen in a few
music videos before, when something big happens.
- Casual clothing, suitable for the weather.
RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
(I don't have the accessories to do this in self isolation,
work from home)
STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.

STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
 http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
 http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
STORYBOARD 1ST PART
Due to the website
only allowing 6
slides at a time, I
did the storyboard
across 2 separate
storyboards.

SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

TASK 3.2 Organisational
Planning
PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Toby Jackson – Director, actor, editor. Toby-
Jackson@student.yorkcollege.ac.uk
Karl Shepherd – Actor. Karl-
Shepherd@student.yorkcollege.ac.uk
Sam Smith – Actor.
LOCATION INFORMATION
The location we will be filming my music video at will be
the park at the bottom of The Chase (in Norton). Due to
doing this PowerPoint at home in self isolation, I can't
take any photos of the location, but on Google Earth you
can see the park in this photo on this slide. We have
permission to film at this park during the day because it
is a public park area, it never is busy, so we should be
able to film it here. The different scenes will be shot in
different areas of the park, for example, the football
scenes will be filmed at the football goal posts, whereas
the other scenes with different sport equipment will be at
the other side of the park.
The Plan B location is the park near Tesco Express in
Norton, it has two goalposts and a lot of space which
would be needed for this music video
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
RISK ASSESSMENT
One risk of the location is the weather conditions, we're
filming it in a park with grass so if the weather is bad, we
could fall or it could cause injuries, also this could cause
damage to any equipment or the camera too. To avoid
this we need to make sure we wear appropriate clothing
and footwear and check the weather before. Another risk
is the storage being too full on my phone, so I will check
that I have the right amount of storage left to film the 3
minuite music video on there. Another risk is damaging
any equipment, this could be by losing any equipment
(e.g. the tennis ball going over the fence etc). To avoid
this I will need to be careful with where abouts in the
park we will film to make sure this doesn’t happen.
CONTINGENCY PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
CONTINGE
NCY PLAN
PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
SCHEDULE
Saturday 17th October 2020, filming day. Throughout
the day we will be spending a few hours filming at the
location. 1pm – 4/5pm.
Monday 19th October 2020, editing day in college. I will
spend this day (from 10:45 – 4:30) editing my music
video on Adobe PremierPro
Tuesday 20th October 2020, editing day in college. I will
also be editing on this day too (9:00 – 2:45)
Wednesday 21st October 2020, last editing day in
college. This will be my last day editing as it is my last
day in college (9:00 – 4:30). I will need to make sure all
the editing is finished on this day
CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form

  • 2. GUIDANCE This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video Assignment It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and share it with your group so you always have a copy – some sections require you to delete the information on the slide and replace with your own work Add more pages to each section where necessary [you should be doing this!] Add visuals as you see necessary This document will be added to as you progress through the pre-production phase. Delete this slide when complete
  • 3. TASK 1 Idea Generation and Research
  • 4. RESEARCH & IDEA GENERATION Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!] Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles, techniques and conventions that we have looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the song differently using different methods You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images, mind maps, etc For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate these
  • 5. BETTER NOW – POST MALONE (IDEA 1) This song is about improving and becoming better at something, so it could be interpreted to the main character in the music video becoming better at sport, it can show their progression and training throughout practice and towards the end it shows them becoming professional. This suits the target audience (age 16 – 24) because it spreads quite a motivational message to carry on going and to not give up. This is good for this age group because lots of people who this is aimed at could be in education and they may enjoy playing sport and it shows they can make progress and become better. This music video would probably be filmed outside or in a hall, with the main character being the most important to the storyline.
  • 6. IDEA 2 This music video could also be interpreted in a music way. The main character could be an artist or learning an instrument, and it could show their progress and how they’re “better now” at their instrument, or even better as an artist. This suits the target audience because many people age 16 – 24 could want to become an artist or a performer and it could help them and motivate them to make progress and to work on their music. This music video could be filmed anywhere. But most likely inside with some props to use (instrument, microphone etc.)
  • 7. IDEA 3 This song could have several flashbacks to when a big artist was younger whilst they’re performing and it could be the main character remembering all the big events they’ve had to show their progress in their music career. This main target audience (16 – 24) are teenagers / young adults, so this would show them to work hard so they can be successful in the future. This music video would have a lot of effects for the flashbacks and it could have a lot of close up or over shoulder camera shots to show the artists facial expression and emotions.
  • 8. RESEARCH Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started, make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides, screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc and how this might link to your production Hint! You’ve already done this in your case study, so you can summarise that here where relevant
  • 9. 1 – DRAKE (FEATURING LIL DURK) – LAUGH NOW CRY LATER This is Drake’s latest music video and is filmed in the Nike Headquarters. It has lots of different camera angles and movements including over shoulder, close up, panoramas, medium shots, longshots, POV etc. In this music video lots of different scenes take place, Drake goes round in a Nike store, plays golf, basketball and rides a jetski. Jeremy D. Larson described the music video as ‘effortlessly cool and simple’. Which is because it is a fun, easy to watch mainstream music video for the purpose of Drake promoting Nike’s brand and for his new album.
  • 10. 2 – STORMZY (FEATURING ED SHEERAN AND BURNA BOY) – OWN IT This music video came out in November 2019 and is a very mainstream and popular music video for Stormzy’s album. It was filmed in several locations in London. This music video included several camera angles and movements such as close up, medium shot, zoom outs, etc. It uses natural lighting at the start and also green lights throughout the music video in the club scenes. This music videos purpose was for a mainstream music video for a single from Stormzy’s album, Heavy Is The Head.
  • 11. 3 – KENDRICK LAMAR, SZA – ALL THE STARS This song was made for the Marvel film ‘Black Panther’. A lot of CGI and editing went into this music video. It was made for a film with a very big budget so the music video also had a big budget behind it. In one of the scenes, Kendrick Lamar was walking through a forest with several black panthers behind him, to connote this music video is linked with the film. During SZA’s singing, she was edited into a background with lots of stars (which links to name of the song), which also proves the music video had a lot of time and editing into it. It has lots of medium shots, over shoulder, close up shots etc.
  • 12. 4 – DRAKE – TOOSIE SLIDE This song and music video was for his mix tape he released in 2020 called Dark lane Demo Tapes. Due to the pandemic, the music video had to be filmed in Drake’s house. This music video was for mainstream purpose because of a celebrity called Toosie created his own dance for it, which Drake re-created in his house in the music video. This music video had several medium shots and over shoulder shots as the camera follows Drake around his house. The lighting in the music video was his house lighting, which is why towards the end of the music video he went outside and the music video was quite dark (because it was filmed at night), with fireworks in the background.
  • 13. 5 – AJ TRACEY (FEATURING MABEL) – WEST TEN This music video was released at the start of July 2020. This music video was filmed in England. It has lots of colourful and different lights throughout the music video which contrast with the dark night background (the music video was filmed at night). It also has a lot of flashing lights and bright lights throughout the music video, which fits with the theme because it is a song made for summer. It has several camera shots like close up, longshot, medium shots and colourful lighting. Also, it is quite a fast paced music video which suits the song because it is quite a fast, hip hop, pop style song. It is a very mainstream music video, especially because it has stayed in the official charts for a while.
  • 14. 6 – POST MALONE (FEATURING TY DOLLA SIGN) - PSYCHO This music video was released in march 2018 and in this music video you can tell that they had a big budget for it, Post Malone is riding an armored personnel carrier and is filmed near an aircraft wreckage. The last part of the music video is filmed where it is snowing, which is a contrast to the first part, being in a sandy desert. It uses several camera angles such as a medium shot, longshot of Post Malone in the armored vehicle, and several close up shots. It has 3 point lighting towards the end, as it is filmed at night in the snow location. Also, natural lighting is used mostly in the desert scenes.
  • 15. 7 – POST MALONE (FEATURING SWAE LEE) - SUNFLOWER This music video was released January 2019 and is a single for the ‘Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse’ soundtrack. The music video is a black and white, live action video. It shows Post Malone and Swae Lee in the studio making the song, and them during a live performance. There is several close-up shots of them in the studio recording the song into a microphone, and over shoulder shots and medium shots whilst they’re on stage performing.
  • 16. POTENTIAL SONGS Drake – Gods Plan, this song is about Drake’s success and how he got to where he is in his career now. I can do this in a sport way, showing the main character (acting as a professional) and how he got to where he is now.
  • 17. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES Flashbacks, this is because the main storyline will have flashbacks to when the main character was practicing and training, and it shows how they got to where they are now. POV shots, this is because it will show their point of view playing football, so the audience can focus on what the main character is doing. Panoramas, so the audience can see where the music video is set. Various camera angles such as; medium shot, long shot, over shoulder etc. Also, various camera techniques such as; pan, zoom etc.
  • 18. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO USE The flashbacks can be in slow motion and maybe black and white, to show it was in the past. Also, it will have text on the screen to show that it is a flashback, for example ’two years ago’ in the bottom When a goal is scored, the background of the scene could change colour, this make the music video stand out and be brighter. Slow motion could be used when a goal is about to be scored to build up suspense.
  • 19. MIND MAP OF IDEAS [SUMMARY OF IDEAS] It could start off with panorama shots of the field and the setting, to show the setting to make it clear for the target audience. It could have several flashbacks to when the character was practicing at football and losing. The main character could be playing football so it shows the progression throughout the music video with flashbacks, this suits my target audience because football is a popular sport for ages 16 – 24. Spreads a positive motivational message to carry on practicing.
  • 20. SUMMARY 5 opportunities of your ideas It spreads a positive message to carry on practicing, which is good for my target audience It will need someone else in the music video to film some parts and to be in it. It could have bright effects when a goal is scored to make it quite bright more detailed. It will have several editing techniques such as, slow motion, black and white, text on screen, etc. It could have a wide range angles and shots, including, medium shot, close up, longshot, panoramas, POV, etc. The lighting will be natural lighting, as the music video will mainly be filmed outside.
  • 21. SUMMARY 5 restrictions to your ideas We will make sure we can film in a field/ area where it is set. I will need 1 extra person to film some scenes and be one of the characters. I will need to make sure we get lots of different scenes because it is a 3 minute song. The weather, if it is bad weather we may not be able to film some scenes.
  • 22. FINAL IDEA – ARTIST/TITLE/INFO Name of track / name of artist – Gods Plan by Drake Brief biographical background – This hip hop, pop track by Drake is the lead single from his album Scorpion in 2018. The song is about his success and fame in his career. It was released January 19, 2018. Links to other artists – Other artists Drake is linked to are: Jeremih, DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, PartyNextDoor and more. Genre info – This song is a hip hop / mixed with pop song.
  • 23. FINAL IDEA – TRACK SUMMARY Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace and style of the song] The song is 3 minutes 18 seconds and is a song about Drake’s success, so the summary of my music video is a successful sport player who gets flashbacks to when he couldn’t play well and when he was practicing and training to be better. This idea links to the song lyrics about him becoming successful. This spreads a positive message for my target audience too. The song isn’t that fast paced, so the shots and editing will be normal paced, so the music video can match the song.
  • 24. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc] My music video has a narrative to it, as the song is about Drake’s success, I’ve interpreted this music video to be the success of the main character, who is a successful sport player. The narrative will be the main character will be playing football and he will think about when he was training to be better and practicing, these will be the flashbacks. I will need to get a wide variety of shots and camera angles and movements so I can put them into the 3 minute track. I will need to film most of it before the week of editing outside of college.
  • 26. GUIDANCE: PRE-PRODUCTION ASSESSMENT You need to assess the viability of your production and investigate what is required to enable you to make your music video Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will need to investigate standard costings for such a production and apply these to your planned production considering which equipment you would need and resources, etc Resources to support this are in the Pre-production assessment folder on Blackboard Delete the questions on each slide and insert your responses
  • 27. TITLE OF PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION OUTLINE Summary of intended production I will be making a music video for the song Gods Plan by Drake, this was a hit song in 2018 for his album Scorpion. The track is about Drake's success in his career, so I will be interpreting the music video in a different way, it will be about a group of people who will going to play football and it will show the flashbacks to when they were practising and they weren't that good. The song isn't that fast paced, so the music video will be medium paced, it will have some longer shots and some quicker shots combined. The flashbacks will have text on screen to make it clearer. We will need my phone for a camera, to film the music video. We will also need a football and suitable clothing to wear depending on the weather that day.
  • 28. LOCATIONS You need to identify locations and plan a recce. What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will you manage this? We will be filming the music video in a park in Norton, it is easily accessible and free to enter. The weather shouldn’t be too much of a problem, it might just change the suitable clothing we will wear.
  • 29. EQUIPMENT What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When? Look at equipment hire places, etc To film my music video we will need my phone to use as a camera, we will also need appropriate clothing for the day of filming depending on the weather. Also, we won't need any resources from college, I will have all my equipment (such as a football, tennis racket, basketball, baseball). I will also be using a car for the first part of the music video, which I will film at home. We will also need Adobe PremierPro to edit this music video, which I will do in college.
  • 30. FACILITIES Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other specialist facilities…? I will edit my music video in college on the Mac's using Adobe PremierPro. I will do this by uploading all my music video shots to OneDrive, so I can access them on the college mac to edit all the footage to make the music video. Also, I wont need any other specialist facilities.
  • 31. PERSONNEL My team is me and my friends (myself, Karl Shepherd and Sam Smith) on Saturday 17th October afternoon, everyone is available on this day. We can all get to the location of filming so this will be quicker and easier for us to film on the day. All of us will be actors in the music video.
  • 32. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC The props we will be using are several sports items I have, such as a football, basketball etc, also I will be using a car at home for one of the shots at the start of the music video (I won't be driving). We will also be using two football goals, but they're already at the park. We will be wearing casually clothing, depending on the weather of that day. If it is warmer weather we'll be wearing shorts or a t shirt, whereas if the weather is worse we will wear jeans, a hoodie or a coat etc.
  • 33. TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
  • 34. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL PLANNING This section is concerned with the visual planning of your music video You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the track itself and create a structure for you to follow when filming It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you make it; it will make filming and production a more streamlined process The following tasks are part of your visual planning  Pre-visualisation and concept boards  Storyboarding  Shot list
  • 35. PRE- VISUALISATION/CONCEPT BOARDS Tool for exploring the direction and visuals Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel” Presents key moments in your video A means to sketch/plan ideas Information on colour/lighting Defining the “mise-en-scene” Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the production, the following slides have been left blank for you to approach in your own way, add more as you need to Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this: http://io9.com/5941145/this-directors-video-pitch-for- hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
  • 36. PRE-VISUALISATION - The lighting we will use will be natural lighting. Filming this music video in a park in the afternoon will mean it will be light for the music video, this also gives off a realistic effect to the music video. - I will be bringing all the props to the area of filming on the film day, these will include a football, cricket bat, basketball etc. I will be filming some POV shots for the start of the music video at home, which will include a car (won't be driving it). - There will be a clear divide between the flashbacks and the present time, it will be obvious with text on the screen, and the present time scenes will have more vibrant editing, such as the sky will change colour for a few seconds, this is a technique I have seen in a few music videos before, when something big happens. - Casual clothing, suitable for the weather.
  • 37.
  • 38. RIP-O-MATIC You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic test reel using existing footage to convey the type of video you want to make (I don't have the accessories to do this in self isolation, work from home)
  • 39. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to each section You can use this as the master template for your production, then add more shots to each section when you develop your full visual plan You should create a slide showing all the sections of the song, then add a slide for each section with timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots You could storyboard and shot list each section as you go, to break up the process.

  • 42. STORYBOARDING Your storyboard should bring your idea to life Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video Provides a basis for production Suggested online storyboard creators are:  https://www.storyboardthat.com  http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]  http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images] Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
  • 43. STORYBOARD 1ST PART Due to the website only allowing 6 slides at a time, I did the storyboard across 2 separate storyboards.
  • 46. SHOT LIST Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video It should work in partnership with your storyboard It will be your working document when you film It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production folder.
  • 51. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO Include names, contact info, and defined roles at difference stages of production, using a table is suggested Toby Jackson – Director, actor, editor. Toby- Jackson@student.yorkcollege.ac.uk Karl Shepherd – Actor. Karl- Shepherd@student.yorkcollege.ac.uk Sam Smith – Actor.
  • 52. LOCATION INFORMATION The location we will be filming my music video at will be the park at the bottom of The Chase (in Norton). Due to doing this PowerPoint at home in self isolation, I can't take any photos of the location, but on Google Earth you can see the park in this photo on this slide. We have permission to film at this park during the day because it is a public park area, it never is busy, so we should be able to film it here. The different scenes will be shot in different areas of the park, for example, the football scenes will be filmed at the football goal posts, whereas the other scenes with different sport equipment will be at the other side of the park. The Plan B location is the park near Tesco Express in Norton, it has two goalposts and a lot of space which would be needed for this music video
  • 53. RISK ASSESSMENT Risk Assess each separate filming location using the table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point Completing a generic filming assessment would be a start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as you progress your production Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document, you should evaluate if anything changes in production and when you put control measures in place You should add the table to each call sheet for each location
  • 54. RISK ASSESSMENT One risk of the location is the weather conditions, we're filming it in a park with grass so if the weather is bad, we could fall or it could cause injuries, also this could cause damage to any equipment or the camera too. To avoid this we need to make sure we wear appropriate clothing and footwear and check the weather before. Another risk is the storage being too full on my phone, so I will check that I have the right amount of storage left to film the 3 minuite music video on there. Another risk is damaging any equipment, this could be by losing any equipment (e.g. the tennis ball going over the fence etc). To avoid this I will need to be careful with where abouts in the park we will film to make sure this doesn’t happen.
  • 55. CONTINGENCY PLANNING Things go wrong Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to minimise the effect on production You should consider the following areas: Technical, Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues for each] Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
  • 57. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for production, that is for the filming and editing of your project. You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
  • 58. SCHEDULE Saturday 17th October 2020, filming day. Throughout the day we will be spending a few hours filming at the location. 1pm – 4/5pm. Monday 19th October 2020, editing day in college. I will spend this day (from 10:45 – 4:30) editing my music video on Adobe PremierPro Tuesday 20th October 2020, editing day in college. I will also be editing on this day too (9:00 – 2:45) Wednesday 21st October 2020, last editing day in college. This will be my last day editing as it is my last day in college (9:00 – 4:30). I will need to make sure all the editing is finished on this day
  • 59. CLEARANCE AND PERMISSIONS Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of your video must have a completed form Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and insert here
