Commenting on the challenges that
BBH had to face during the peak
periods of COVID-19 pandemic, Dr
Thomas says, “BBH has faced with
the challenging task of providing
care/treatment to the COVID
patients. Additional infrastructure
was made. Patient beds were
purchased. Partnership and support
of many well-wishers helped us to
sail through this. COVID did not stop
our services in the hospital and in
the villages. Apart from acute care
for COVID patients in the hospital,
our community outreach team
continued reaching out to
disadvantaged communities as
well.”
Bringing his leadership experience
into the spotlight, we asked Dr
Thomas on what advice would he
give to aspiring doctors and
healthcare enthusiasts who are
stepping into the healthcare sector,
to which he replied, “Medical
practice is a service to mankind. It is

both a skill and an art. You must train
yourself to become the best in your area of
expertise. You must selﬂessly give yourself
into this. Your reward is the satisfaction that
your patients experience when healing
occurs in their body and mind.”

In the past century when World War I was
still going on which precisely started in
January 1918, a deadly influenza virus
was identified for the first time in Kansas. It
lasted 36 months, that is till December 1920.
The virus infected over 500 million people
which was around one third of the world’s
population at the time. The death toll has had,
and still has, a rough estimate of at least 25
million people, but possibly even up to 50 or
more.
There is reason to believe that virus attacks
may become more common in the near future.
In any region, but especially in the health
sector, prevention and preparedness are critical.
This article uses India’s dramatic experience
with COVID-19 to address the core aspects of
the role of health technicians. The health
technicians that were in partnership with
management and medical staff, have responded
to the ever-changing demands by ensuring
appropriate care facilities for contaminated
patients while also ensuring the safety of all
patients and operators.
With the rapid dissemination of COVID-19,
hospitals have been forced to reorganise their
network and assistance activities in order to

respond to the health emergency in a matter of days, if not
hours. To accommodate the ever-increasing number of
patients, hospitals started to convert many of their wards
into acute, sub-intensive, and inpatient sections. The
healthcare sector should expect a slowdown in growth as
the planet grapples with a global epidemic triggered by the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Governments will re-allocate funds to fund healthcare
programmes and determine the viability of immunity cards,
mass vaccines, and scaling up touch tracing as the short-
term need for COVID research and the search to discover a
vaccine intensifies.
The rapid spread of the infection, as well as the unexpected
influx of people at high risk of infection, necessitated an
urgent increase in bed capacity, especially in intensive care
units, which were housed in specially equipped wards with
separate routes and dedicated teams.
Inside a hospital, enabling a section or pavilion for the
management of positive COVID-19 patients involves
transferring whole units, creating multi-professional teams,
ensuring the availability of Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE), even a hundred times more than normal, educating
the dressing and undressing teams, and recognising various
dirty/clean content paths. Reminding all personnel, urgently
upgrading the electrical grid, oxygen system, and room
ventilation, obtaining negative pressure, if possible,
installing all equipment, and in parallel separating the
pathways and finding locations for the other patients
(transplants, oncology, etc.) to ensure the continuity of
treatments will be necessary.
Key health administrators, teams of professionals, directors
and coordinators of the divisions and programmes
concerned, nursing care, technical services, pharmaceutical
engineering, risk control, pharmacy, and others is
fundamental and must function in harmony. The cumulative
effect must be close to that of an orchestra, resulting in
complex “machine control” in motion in the sector.
There will be many changes in the future due to the
pandemic. Some of them forecasted are mentioned below:
With more than 200 percent growth since the pandemic,
India’s telehealth markets have reached a tipping stage.
Following the pandemic, automated meetings with
healthcare providers will become the normal form of
treatment delivery. Reimbursement, medical preparation,
and network scalability, on the other hand, would be crucial
in recalibrating telehealth.
Informatics and artificial intelligence (AI) applications for
process automation and organisational analytics will expand
at a rate of 100 percent. For example, GE Healthcare’s
FDA-approved Critical Care Suite AI tool can assist
radiologists in prioritising critical cases. The resumption in
imaging for the backlog of elective procedures in Q3 and
Q4 will result in teleradiology and AI-based solutions
gaining from new investments. Scale-up in capacity,
flexible payment options, and redistribution of the workload
will accelerate partnerships.
The United States will have an excess of 100,000
ventilators, while Western Europe will buy another 30,000
to 50,000 ventilators. This geographic gap could reshape
non-hospital and home critical care models, while
embedded analytics solutions will resurrect the mature
tracking device segment post-pandemic. Resmed’s cloud-
based AirView app for home treatment has introduced a
remote control solution for ventilators in the United States
and Europe.
In-vitro diagnostics (IVD) research in a healthcare
environment is currently unable to satisfy unparalleled
demand. The $5 billion point-of-care monitoring industry
for infectious diseases will accelerate the imminent
revolution in service models by the end of 2020, with
alternative testing sites such as pharmacy being permanent
ecosystem participants.
The cultural transformation was not as fast as the
technological one. And in order to benefit from the
technological growth we experienced, healthcare
participants must leapfrog cultural transformation.

Battling the Pandemic Effectively

same was affected”, states team FEHI.
Supply chains were disrupted, medical travel for global
patients was put on hold, a separate designated area had to
be built for COVID patients, and all resources were
dedicated to ensuring the pandemic was controlled. The
OPD footfall was affected as it dipped to 15-20%, the
infrastructure was redesigned with the end objective of
ensuring the virus did not spread, elective surgeries were
postponed, and many heart patients did not get the care
they needed at the right time.
The hospital staff had to be regularly quarantined, making
the workforce sparse, and some hospitals had to give
monetary bonuses to staff to encourage them to come to
work despite the risk. This led to a marked deterioration in
their health. “However, from the second quarter of 2020,
we started to witness improvement in the results. We did
this by focusing on patient centric care and through the
usage of information technology”, adds team FEHI.

After a tough year managing the pandemic, FEHI is
moving forward as a stronger entity with its core values,
focusing on its work as a responsible and reliable

1. Kindly talk about different care packages and services
offered by your hospital.
The mother’s womb is the first institute to personality and
intelligence development. Tatva Health & Care a.k.a. THC
offers unique healthy progeny antenatal services based on
Yoga, Ayurveda, Diet and Meditation.
Tatva Health & Care is a place where authentic
Panchakarma treatment is given for weight loss and other
health related issues. Along with physical fitness, THC also
handles mental health with psychological counseling.
2. What is the vision and mission of your hospital?
Vision: To provide healthy progeny to our patients and
always prefer to implement Health Beyond Medicine
aspect.
Mission: Awakening of Ayurveda and promotion of yoga
practices including benefits of a diet for the betterment of
the healthy individual.
3. What kind of challenges has your hospital and its
team faced at the time of its inception?
In this modern world, people are more oriented towards
modern medicines with the quick relief phenomena. We are
not yet convinced of traditional medicine and therapies and
this was our toughest challenge. Eventually, as we started
implementing our concept of “Health Beyond Medicine”,
slowly the vision of individuals changed, and they
understood the true benefits of traditional treatment. THC
has eventually handled most of the patients which have a
history of several modern medicinal treatments.
In today’s world, as new diseases like Covid are emerging,
we need to be ready for these kinds of pandemic/epidemic
situations. Unidentified variations in diseases and
identifying the treatment for these is the biggest challenge.
4. How the technological advancements and innovation
in the healthcare space has influenced your hospital’s
daily operations?
Innovations in traditional medicines are providing simple
options to patients including the prepared form of formulas,
churna, etc., and a systematic approach towards
Panchakarma procedures. Highly modified instruments like
steam therapy equipment, the shirodhara arrangement has
provided great relief and confidence to the patients. This
eases the implementation of procedures daily.
5. What does the future look like for your hospital in
terms of growth and expansion?
As we all are aware the Covid Pandemic compelled us to
explore alternatives to modern medicines. This helped us to
think beyond the present medicinal world and we
discovered few untouched alternatives, Indian Yoga and
Ayurveda is one of them. Indian Yoga and Ayurveda with
changing world vision is slowly building a platform to
resolve future endures of mankind. And hence THC
visualizes a better tomorrow.
6. We all know the Covid-19 pandemic has created a lot
of workload for caregivers and ancillary healthcare
service providers. But what problems your hospital has
faced specifically in this ongoing pandemic?
As the pandemic situation spread lots of fear in the people’s
minds, it was an uncertain situation in the clinic. The
treatment protocol was not in place and hence the managing
patients were difficult. THC took an initiative and trained
the staff to handle the covid patients. “Awareness” was the
most critical aspect, and we handle it well. Still, the hidden
fear of Covid and lack of knowledge kept the normal
patients away from the clinics.
7. According to you, why is patient engagement
necessary when it comes to enabling prompt healthcare?
How IoT is changing the healthcare paradigm by
leveraging patient engagement and delivery of care-
related services?
Yes, THC believes patient engagement is necessary
preferably we count on those who are proactive about their
health. We built their trust by educating them with factual
knowledge of Yoga and Ayurveda to get a cure. so patient
faithfulness drives them to schedule more and more
necessary appointments. (e.g., Preventive care
appointments and those needed to manage chronic

has opened a myriad of possibilities to improve

facing various challenges today, from rising healthcare
