This document contains the results of a questionnaire given to the target audience of 15-25 year old males for a spy thriller film. The questions gauged preferences around music, violence, character personalities and designs for the film trailer and poster. Key results included a preference for intense but upbeat music in the trailer, a witty main character, high levels of violence, a seductive and smart female lead, central character positioning on the poster, dark color schemes for both the poster and magazine. These results will influence design choices for the film promotion across different media.

3. How a Film Poster Use and
Challenge ConventionsThis film poster challenges the typical conventions you would
normally have for a poster. One way it challenges the
conventions is by the using the whole character image of their
face to set the mood of the poster rather than adding a location
behind them. I think this was done to tell the audience that this
is the main character seeing as it dominates all the space on
the poster but it also creates some mystery by making the
audience curious about what is behind the character and what
the environment/world looks like and it sets the tone for a
comedy type of film cause you can see it as the character is
trying to take the spotlight. It uses conventions by using
simplistic design to cater to its target audience which would be
children because having a simple design for children can keep
more concentrated with the low attention span they have.
The poster uses conventions as well by having the character
image in the middle like they always do even though he
dominates all the space by using matching colour all the way
around the poster , this shows that he is the main character as
well by having him be the center of attention. And like the
majority of posters it has the film title at the bottom in the poster
and it stands out as well by having it big and in a colour that
makes it noticeable. And another way is the use of its Tagline
by referencing another film made by the same people, this will
attract fans of the last movie want to watch it and it also
advertises the film in the tagline for people who like the Lorax
4. How a Film Poster Develops,
Challenges & uses Conventions
This poster develops the conventions by having the main
character image facing backwards from the audience where it is
a miner change from the usual character facing forwards and
also dominating most of the space in the poster as well. Another
way this poster develops conventions is by adding depth in the
location/background by having images get smaller and smaller
this is different from a usual location because a usual one
normally feels flat to have the character image stand out more.
The Poster for the Hunger Games also challenges conventions
and example of it doing this is by how it pleases multiple images
of two characters in the location, how the character images are
lined also challenges conventions by having them in a row.
It uses poster conventions by using by implementing the logo of
the franchise to catch its target audience which would be people
who have read the book and know of the hunger games. It also
makes the logo stand out as well by making it the center, bright
with the use of a fire effect and make all the characters to face
the logo as well to make it the focus. It also uses conventions by
its use of the tagline which goes well with the overall theme of
the poster with the posters looking into the same direction. It
also gives the audience high expectations with a claim like that.
5. How a Film Magazine front cover
uses Conventions
This cover uses variety of film magazine cover conventions.
One way it does this is how everything is located on it an
example being the main image being in the middle and
taking up most of the composition on the cover but like
most magazine covers the text overlaps the main image to
get people to actually read it, the masthead is located
directly beneath the skyline and it is also in very big bold
writing, the cover line is at the bottom like usual and you
have the anchorage text on the side of the magazine cover
which also uses the conventions. The magazine covers
locate all these conventions in this way so they can lead
the eyes of the reader in a way that they can read
everything that is on the page.
They also have a puff that sticks out with the use of
shapes, this uses conventions along with it also linking and
promoting other magazine issues as well. This gets the
reader informed with other issues linked to the movie to get
them to buy it, this kind of develops conventions due to it
promoting other magazine issues related to the film rather
than other films.
6. How a Film Magazine front cover
Challenges & Develops Conventions
The magazine cover for guardians of the galaxy
challenges and develops the conventions of a magazine
cover immensely. Examples of this is by having two puffs
on the magazine cover, with one of them overlapping the
masthead this challenges conventions because it is
something that doesn’t usually happen on a film cover.
The main image develops the conventions by having
more than one character included on the magazine
cover, it only develops because the image is still in the
middle and dominates most of the space. A weird one
that completely challenges the conventions is the fact
that the barcode and issue number are not in any of the
corners which makes the cover look a bit bizarre in a
good way.
The way that they have chosen a different colour text for
the skyline challenges the conventions of a film
magazine which sort of breaks the colour scheme, The
character image also overlaps a bit of the skyline which
challenges conventions a lot. And finally you have Cover
lines (title of film) fade in a bit which also challenges
conventions because you would normally want it to be a
bit more prominence.
7. How a Film Trailer uses, develops
and Challenges
This challenges conventions by
having dialogue from the movie
drive the narrative of the trailer
rather than have a voiceover being
of someone that is not included in
the film at all.
The parallel mood music uses
conventions by going in tune with
the imagery to impact the viewer
more, it uses deep sounds when
revealing something big like most
trailers do nowadays.
8. How a Film Trailer uses, develops
and Challenges
And the trailer develops
conventions of a film trailer
including a billing block rather
than including the names of the
actors along with the characters
in the film. It probably does this
because it uses very well know A
list actors so it kind of just uses
the billing block as a reminder
9. How 007 Casino Royale Uses, Develops
and Challenges Conventions of a
Spy/Crime Thriller Trailer
The camerawork in this trailer challenges the
conventions of a spy thriller film. It does this by
introducing slow paced transitions between each shot
as dialogue being exchanged between characters.
This technique allows the audience to be eased into
the film trailer in preparation for the intensity of the
action to come. This is atypical of the spy thriller genre
which would usually begin with an establishing shot
and fast paced action from the outset.
The editing uses the conventions of a spy thriller
trailer. It does this by getting fast paced when the
action scenes come along with scenes lasting shorter
due to quicker cutting as well. What this does is
emphasizes the impact of the fighting to make it more
painful which is a typical way of doing this for a spy
thriller because they focus more on the mystery and
infiltration than the action its self so it makes sense
for the fighting scenes to be edited so quickly.
10. How 007 Casino Royale Uses, Develops
and Challenges Conventions of a
Spy/Crime Thriller Trailer
The voice over in the trailer develops the
conventions of a spy, thriller film. It does this by
using dialogue from the film from multiple
characters. This is how the narrative of the film is
explained, it’s slightly different from a usual spy,
thriller film which would of used dialogue for
exposition than explaining the narrative of the film.
The colours used in this sequence use the
conventions of a spy, thriller film with the use of
exotic colours that are vibrant and lush this makes
the location feel more tropical. The lighting
challenges the conventions by being more bright
this makes the film feel more revealing than
secretive and mysterious which spy films normally
are.
11. How 007 Casino Royale Uses, Develops
and Challenges Conventions of a
Spy/Crime Thriller Trailer
The pacing uses the conventions of a spy thriller
by being quite slow, it also does this by at times
smoothly transitioning to the next scene with a
fade to ease the scene. This makes scenes
more easy to analyse so the mystery can be
figured out which is something you would see in
a spy thriller film, it has the odd fast cuts to
emphasise the action but that too follows the
conventions like I said before. This sets the
mood of the type of film it is.
12. Film Magazine and Poster
Technologies
Physical Technology
These are devices that allow people to capture the moments they see and want to show or edit in
the future, the results can come in the form of images.
Example: CANON EOS 750 DSLR Camera
This camera is used for poster and Magazine making because it can take highly detailed pictures
that would look sharp and professional. They also have a variety of settings to allow for the picture
to be edited there and then examples being you can change the colour, focus, lighting and many
other things.

Technologies
Printing
This is getting the picture that has been edited digitally onto paper as a physical copy.
Printing process:
One printing process is Gravure and this is used for printing high end magazines, newspapers and packaging. This where an image is
engraved into a printing cylinder which is full of ink and that ink transfers to the paper.
Printing Hardware:
These are high end printers that allow the industry to print magazine issues at a very fast pace meaning that a lot could be produced
for the public. They also print in top quality with a glossy feel to the paper and with the image being identical to what was on the
computer so no colour saturation.
16. Film Trailer Technologies
Physical Technology
These are devises that allow you to capture and edit a video in real time.
Video Cameras:
The industry would use high end cameras that allow you to film in 4k or at least 1080p which is high quality
to make the video look much better b allowing you to swap lenses, they would allow you to change the focus
and light balance and various other ways to edit the scene. They would have a viewing screen so you can
see what is being recorded and also various other types of settings.
Microphone:
These allow you to block out background noise and the wind so the sound and dialogue sounds nice and
crisp, this also makes editing sound easier too.
17. Film Trailer Technologies
Digital Technology
These are devices that allow for post production to be viewed and for that work to be saved and sent
Computer Hardware:
These allow for people to make edits to the videos, images captured. For example the monitor would
allow for people to view what they would be editing. The industry would get big monitors with high
resolution to allow for mistakes to be spotted easily with the high resolution and the big monitors allow for
a big viewing angle. There is also some internal memory that allows you to save work.
Input:
Input devices are devices that connect to you computer to extend its functionality. So example being a
mouse that would allow you to navigate your way through the computer screen and lets you use tool in in
editing software for videos like trailers. It also includes things like USB sticks or external hard drives that
would allow you to move your edited trailers around.
18. Film Trailer Technologies

21. Analysing my Film Promotion
Questionnaire
My target audience is 15 – 25 year old males
Question 1
Question 1 was “What type of music would be best for a spy thriller trailer?” I had asked this
because I wanted to know the type of atmosphere my audience would want. They preferred for it to
feel intense and slightly up beat, my audience would want it to be instances because then they
could have that senses of excitement with the adrenaline feeling, making them engage more in the
movie. This question has influenced me in the type of soundtrack I can implement into my trailer.
Question 2
What I asked for this one was “What type of personality would you like for the main character to
have in a spy film trailer?”. I chose this to just know the type of actor I could cast for my film and It
could also help me decide the looks of the character as well. My audience chose for my character
to be Witty and I feel like they chose this trait because it adds a light atmosphere to the intenseness
that would be present. This will influence who I cast for my trailer.
Question 3
For question 3 I asked “how violent would you like the spy thriller trailer to be with 1 being not
violent and 10 being extremely violent with lots of blood?”. With this I wanted to find out if violence
is what would keep my audience engaged in the film trailer or not and the results say that they
would prefer it to be a 10 which is the most violent. They probably chose this because violence
excites men stereotypically and makes them feel masculine when watching. It would help me set
the tone of the film.
22. Analysing my Film Promotion
Questionnaire
Question 4
Question 4 was “What type of personality would you expect from a female love interest in a spy
thriller?”. And it helped me understand the personality of a female love interest my audience would
like, this makes me have an Idea of who to cast. My audience picked for her to be seductive and
smart they probably chose her to be like that because that is the preference they have for a females
personality. I will use this question to cast people that can cater to my target audience.
Question 5
Question 5 was “Where would you like to have the character positioned on a spy thriller trailer and
why”. This helped me to know what type of design they like from their posters and they chose it to
be in the center because they felt like it made the character look more powerful and in control. I will
use this by positioning my character in the center of the poster.
Question 6
Question 6 was “What type of colour scheme would you like for a spy thriller poster and why?”. I
wanted to know what type of atmosphere they would like form the colours. They chose for it to have
dark pallets like black and gray. They chose because it gives the poster that intense fell and follows
conventions for a spy thriller. I will implement a dark colour scheme to my poster because of this.
23. Analysing my Film Promotion
Questionnaire
Question 7
For this one I asked “What type of words would you expect on a spy thriller
poster?”. This helps me to know the types of words I could implement whether they
be similar to my answer or those exact words it tells me how my audience
perceives a thriller poster to look. They chose words like danger, blood pumping,
survival and thrilling. They chose these because they are words that have grit to
them just like a thriller would.
Question 8
I asked “what type of colour scheme would you expect from a thriller magazine?”.
This would make adding the colour to the magazine easier because I could add
the colours that would pleas my audience whilst following the general theme of my
trailer. The answers were dark colours. They chose these because most if not all
thriller films feature dark saturated colours.
