Utilization in Construction Industry
Sub-research area: Steel Slag Utilization
Preamble: Steel slag is an industrial by-product of steel manufacturing, composed
of highly calcareous, siliceous and ferrous materials. The chemical composition of
steel slag showed potential for use as cementitious component. However, the
increased initial setting time and low early strength limits its widespread application
in cement and concrete industries.
Rationality: (i) Improvement of Initial setting time and low early strength of steel
slag by using various alkali activators (NaOH, Na2SiO3, Na2SO4, Na2CO3).
(ii) Performance study of concrete made of activated steel slag and waste glass.
Expected Outcome: (i) Activated steel slag would be utilized as a partial
replacement of cement in concrete.
(ii) Concrete made of activated steel slag and glass is expected to yield superior
mechanical and fire resistant properties.
