determination of other aspiring professionals that
gets a major boost.
One such charismatic leader who has conquered
countless challenges in his professional journey and
has been immensely successful in grabbing the
eyeballs of the business community is Amitabh Ray.
As the Managing Director of Ericsson Global
Services – India, he manages global operations in the
areas of services delivery, R&D, product
development, pre-sales & sales support and a number
of global shared support functions. He is also a noted
TEDx speaker & contributor and is passionate to
build the next generation of leaders with a moral
compass. This Cover Story edition showcases his
overall journey that undoubtedly stands to be an
inspirational saga for the budding entrepreneurs.
The Journey had a Modest Start
Coming from a very humble background Amitabh
had a very modest start to his career, completing his
graduation and MBA, he was determined to put his
best foot forward in whatever assignment was given.
While his Father has served the Indian Armed
Forces, his Mother was a central government
employee. Hailing from a middle-class family, hard
work, sincerity of purpose, and having a moral
compass were the family values that Amitabh learned
long ago. His mother had played a prominent role in
encouraging him to learn new things that had a
promising future. Amitabh firmly believes that
values are not to be taught – as everyone grows with
these values until it becomes hardwired in the DNA!
Right from his first job and till date, he emphasizes
to align himself with the organizational goals and
internalize them rather than focus on creating a
personal road map. Giving priority to the
organization before his ambitions is what he has
followed through both good and challenging times.

15. The initial projects and assignments gave him the
confidence that steered his career path ahead. As a team
member, leading a team or being at a leadership position,
he has always stuck to his principles that have been
hugely appreciated. He adds - “You cannot win if your
team is losing, is what I have believed in and will
continue to do so till the end.”
A Talismanic Leader
Being associated with global companies like PwC and
IBM in the past, managing leadership positions, Amitabh
has always worked towards inspiring professionals to
break the shells and be innovative to the core! He says -
“the only way one can keep growing as a leader is
through the constant cycle of learning, unlearning and
relearning. The ability to put this knowledge and
information into perspective is what helps a leader to
mature”. While he joined Ericsson India Global Services
in 2010 as the Vice President & Head of Consulting and
System Integrations, in 2014 he was promoted as the
Managing Director.
He feels fortunate to have been involved in the
transformation journeys of three very large global
organizations all of which were centurions. For Amitabh,
more than the results, what matters is enjoying the
workplace, being ethical, and giving your best shot in
whatever task you perform. Be it a Monday or any
weekday, he is always there to assist his team and
continues to excel in contributing to attaining the
objectives of the company. Despite his overwhelming
success, he is firmly grounded and always focusses on
delivering customer delight through flawless execution
and above all encourages his mates to become leaders in
the process. He’s focussed on excelling in executing the
job without thinking of the rewards or recognition that it
might fetch. Career success is just a by-product of giving
your best every day in any job you have to deliver to
support the organization’s goals.
Building Castle against the Tide
Talking about facing challenges, Amitabh has drawn
inspiration from the initial days of his professional life.
He remembers the time when he managed his family on
survival wages in a foreign land to fight back prejudices
to prove his mettle, and this period prepared him to
tackle the future hardships. Successfully overcoming the
most adverse conditions was the defining moment of his
life as it shaped his career path. Rejections, success,
appreciations, criticisms and a lot more, these real-life
experiences were the most important learnings of his life
that continue to be a decisive factor in every professional
assignment he completes.
Ericsson – A First-of-its-kind Company
Not many are aware that the Founder of Ericsson – Lars
Magnus Ericsson opened a small factory in 1876 which
eventually evolved as one of the most talked-about
organizations across the globe. With a global workforce
of 94,580 employees, it is headquartered in Stockholm.
As the leading providers of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) to service providers,
with about 40% of the world’s mobile traffic carried
through their networks. It enables the full value of
connectivity by creating game-changing technologies
and services that are easy-to-use, adapt, and scale,
making our customers successful in a fully connected
world. For more than 140 years, its ideas, technology,
and people have changed the world: real turning points
that have transformed lives, industries, and society as a
whole. The comprehensive portfolio ranges across
Networks, Digital Services, Managed Services, and
Emerging Business; powered by 5G and IoT platforms.
Research & Development (R&D) is at the heart of the
business and with more than 49,000 granted patents, the
brand has one of the strongest intellectual property rights
portfolios in the industry.
Marking the Present & Crafting the Future
Being responsible for the delivery centres located in
India, Mexico, Romania, and China – Amitabh and his
team work towards exploring innovative strategies
through embracing technology. These centres are not
only focused on cost arbitrage but driving innovation
through Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and
finding every day some smart ways of performing the
tasks. Aligning with the organizational goals, Amitabh
looks forward to nurturing the new talents to be
responsible for bigger roles.

16. In terms of the prospects and future roadmap, Amitabh is
confident that the telecom technology plays a
foundational role in Industry 4.0 making possible the
connectivity between everything. Technologies like 5G
with its promise of low latency, massive bandwidth
would transform the manufacturing industry, with the
vision of highly efficient, connected and flexible
factories of the future quickly becoming a reality in
many sectors. Healthcare, retail, logistics &
transportation, media & entertainment, banking &
financial services, in short, every industry vertical will be
transformed.
He further depicts that as more devices get connected
generating massive amounts of data, analytics will
become critical to find new value propositions in Big
Data. The exponential increase of computing power,
cloud storage will enable organizations and government
to use Artificial Intelligence to forecast events with >
95% accuracy in many cases. New technologies and new
players have always been business as usual and
eventually greater competition is good for the company
and for its esteemed clientele.
Illuminating up Young Mind
Ending the excerpt on a high note, Amitabh advices the
aspiring young professionals to stay humble, focused and
not measure your success with only financial metrics. He
adds, “The only way to stay ahead is to learn, unlearn
and relearn. This is the only way to stay relevant in
present days. Always remember that outcome is more
important than income.”

experience and self-confidence. Working far from home
made me more responsible as a person. I came across
initial hurdles and home sickness but slowly and steadily
I evolve as a person and identified myself as more calm

impact on personal commitments.
IS: How does your family contributes to your

22. in the field of customer support backed by AI. Being a
relatively new field, it offered lots of exciting
opportunities and challenges. Abhimanyu feels, “The
technological barrier in the AI world is being pushed
back every day. A lot of times, it is us doing the pushing -
creating entirely new approaches and solutions which
solve problems for people around the world. That’s one
of the most satisfying things about this job.”
Agara Labs comprises of data scientists, engineers and
designers building next-level solutions for problems that
enterprises are faced with. It builds products that
automate the entire customer support function in
enterprises. Using cutting-edge deep learning, it builds
intelligent virtual agents which can understand and
resolve customer queries without any human assistance.
Due to the vast amount of data and training that goes into
building these products, it has the ability to resolve
customer queries faster and more accurately. These
solutions have a double-fold advantage:
• For customers, that means no more holding the phone
line for 20 minutes or struggling with unhelpful agents.
• For enterprises, that means providing meaningful and
fast support that customers have come to expect from
brands.
Artificial Intelligence – A Technology to Bank on
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming multiple
industries from its core. Chatbots and conversational UIs
started this revolution by attempting to resolve low-level
queries in a self-serve mode. A similar, powerful
transformation is seen happening in customer support
“
It is said that sometimes we need to lose ourselves in
order to find ourselves. And what better way to lose
oneself than a road trip. Abhimanyu spent over 13
years in multiple roles and industries. The initial five
years of his career saw him in the role of an investment
banker. He then spent a year on the road, riding his
motorcycle and working with NGOs in some of the most
remote parts of India. Back from the trip, he had a choice
to make, settle down with another job or start something
afresh. Abhimanyu chose to branch out and founded his
first startup ‘Copper Sky Journeys’. The company dealt
with the travel space which eventually fizzled out, but he
got to learn a lot. Next two years saw him working at
Stayzilla as VP of Product where he built out a national
network of over 25,000 alternate accommodations. But
his prime was yet to come.
Agara Labs

level of automation by handling far more complex
queries as well as emulating other actions of agents.
Abhimanyu is hopeful when he says, “We expect the
trend of increasing complexity to continue unabated.
Improvements in technology and the increasing
propensity of brands to spend on technology-powered
experiences are going to accelerate the adoption of such
solutions. We expect the AI-powered customer support
industry to grow to be a $10bn+ market over the next 5
years.”
On a Journey called Life
An entrepreneur on his journey goes through several
zenith and nadir. Abhimanyu’s story is similar. The key
challenge, he believes, is not being overwhelmed by
failures and setbacks. He feels that everyone fails at
some point and whether or not you get back in the race
determines your future. In such stages when things are
not as expected, support from immediate family is
incredibly important. He shares, “My wife has been a
pillar of confidence especially when things tend to go
sideways. She has ensured that in the quest for building
the company, I do not ignore my health, my family and
my other passions. Her steadfast beliefs are a key part of
my success.”
Having set two ventures himself, he advises budding
entrepreneurs to, “Persevere. More than anything else,
the one quality that defines a successful entrepreneur is
perseverance in the face of adversity.” He also feels that
there’s a lot to technology than what is being harnessed
currently. According to him, “While we have pushed a
lot of technology, we have not given enough attention to
user experience, usability and friendliness of interfaces.
With the rapidly accelerating pace of technological
change, it is even more important that we simplify and
customize experiences to the user instead of throwing
more options at them.”
Towards the Destination
The market today, is highly competitive with new
technologies being introduced all the time. Folks at
Agara expect that trend to continue and become stronger
over time. As machine learning becomes more
commonplace, it also expects a wider variety of players
to enter the market. It intends to continue investing
heavily in R&D to ensure Agara maintains a
technological edge over its competitors. Coupled with a
widening roster of products, it will continuously evaluate
and enter new markets as the situation demands. For
Abhimanyu, this trip will see its destination when he can
look back and state, “I built something that improved the
lives of people around the world.”

26. There is a saying which goes ‘rough sea always
makes a skilled sailor’. Similarly in establishing
any business, challenges can be many; but true
leaders surpass all the challenges with proficiency and
come out as an inspiration for others. Meet Abhishek
Dutta, a young and ambitious entrepreneur who believes
in pushing his limits to the next level every time. “The
fear of losing keeps me active and running every day. I
hate missing my smallest commitments even, so it is
always important for me to keep up with my dates”, Says
Abhishek
Diving into business World
Abhishek completed his graduation in computer
engineering. Later, he completed MBA in marketing. He
is instrumental in both building applications and
marketing the same across a wide range of existing client
base and probable target clients. Abhishek always
wanted to start something on his own. So he founded D-
WEB CONSULTANTS PVT. LTD. to deliver quality
software services to its clients. “It all started with a zeal
to be my boss but now it's more about responsibility
towards my employees, investors, and clients to meet up
their expectation and continue the goodwill of our brand.
So practically the journey started with me but now it’s
about we, that is driving me every day”, Says Abhishek
Delivering Exceptional Services
In 2011, the company was established as DWEB

products and services to MIS, ERP Modules, CRM,

Bosco School, Berhampore, Delhi Public Secondary

Overcoming Hurdles Proficiently
Like every other entrepreneurial journey, Abhishek’s
journey is also filled with a lot of challenges. Initially,
the company had faced numerous challenges in terms of
higher value projects, better manpower, client base and
investment in R& D and own client portal. Financial
Challenge to take up higher-value projects and better
manpower was a big challenge at that time. Initially, as
the company is into the B2B segment, the Target Group
is limited. The company ventured into various IT
products and services to increase its TG. Today, the
company has an ample number of clients because of its
quality services. “Investing in our client portal to
automate the process so that we can manage maximum
clients via our limited team base was also a challenge to
us, we had to redo the job 3 times, to get the one which
maximized the manpower utilization with min. client
complains”, Says Abhishek.
With each passing day, the company overcame all the
challenges and emerged as the company which manages
client requirement in detail with zero communications
drops.

30. Rohan ShravanDelivering Enriching Tech-Enabled Solutions
n an exclusive interview with Insights Success
Imagazine, Rohan Shravan, Founder & Director of
Inkers talks about his overall journey and the current
industry scenario.
IS: Kindly brief us about yourself, your initial journey since
the beginning of your career?
Rohan: I was born to a lower middle class family, so since
the beginning I knew that there is no alternative for hard
work. I had a curious mind, so instead of playing with toys
or musical instruments, I would rather open them and learn
how they worked. The journey for me has been nothing less
than spectacular, and full of highs and lows. I started my
first business when I was in 8th grade, and since then
always wanted to be an entrepreneur, solving complex
challenges. I also believe that the plan B should always be
to not have a plan B, and have stuck to it. For example
when I wrote IIT-JEE, I did not fill in any other form. It’s
risky but works most of the times, and requires intense
dedication.
IS: What drives you every day to work? Or what is your
motivation which pushes you to enhance your
performance?
Rohan: I have a vision of how the world would look in
2040, and believe unless I am doing what I am doing I
might not see that world. I have a wish list of things I want
to do before I go away, and that's the biggest motivation for
me. I also look at time differently. When you look at a week
not just as 7 days, but close to 2% of the whole year, you
feel an urge to work on things immediately. One month and
close to 9% of the year is gone!
IS: Kindly talk about the most memorable moments along
with the challenges you have been through?
Rohan: We were unknown when we started Notion Ink. We
knew we have what world wants to see and it will impact
everything. I took the risk and went to Las Vegas to attend,
uninvited, CES. A day before the official launch, NVIDIA’s
CEO Mr Jensen Huang was practicing Tegra 1 launch.
Unfortunately none of the devices, which his ODMs had
made, were working. Some had touch panel issue; some
were not booting up, etc. Only device which was working
was in my hand, our first device known as Adam. I
proposed it to him, and he used it to launch NVIDIA,
introducing Adam from Notion Ink as the next generation
of computing device.
We had shipped Adam to 88 countries, including people on
US’s naval ship USS America LHA6. And our 6th device
was ordered by Apple Cupertino (when Steve Jobs was
alive) before Apple iPad was launched. These are some of
my favourites.
IS: How does your family contribute to your success? Talk
about your family values, the culture which has strongly
impacted your professional journey?
Rohan: Many times you have to make a choice, work or
family. And unless you have a family which understands
this, everything might break. Fortunately my family
understands this. I saw my mom and dad as entrepreneurs,
and learnt from them that no one would treat their work or
child as they would. They would leave at night to put
posted about their business on the walls to promote it. I saw
them following a disciplined regime and saw how
wonderfully it worked. They worked hard and taught me,
that whenever you will take a shortcut, it will come back to
haunt you one day.
IS: How has tech domain transformed over the years?
Rohan: Time passes by fast, so we don’t feel much
difference, but everything is connected and getting smaller
and faster exponentially. Things which were impossible just
few years back are in our hands now. What is getting
difficult is to stay relevant. These new technologies are
being built on decades of engineering, and to make
something background is must now. We are increasingly
going towards autonomous machines, and that I find
threatening to a large segment of population. I feel we do
not realize that at the speed at which we are moving, we
might not be relevant to contribute back to the society
anymore.
28 September 2019|
31. IS: How are you foreseeing the future in terms of
expansion of your business, the advent of new
technologies and increasing players in the market?
Rohan: Inker is doing tremendously well.
Everyone today thinks they are doing AI, but AI is
not easy, and most are actually using the term to
re-name data analytics. When we compete with our
competitors, we see a clear edge, and have been
able to impress our customers across the globe.
Competition is fierce, especially from Western
countries, and consolidation has already started
happening. I feel privileged to be able to work with
an extraordinary team which has allowed us to
keep an edge w.r.t. the competition.
IS: Where do you see yourself in future? Or, what
is your ultimate professional objective of your life?
Rohan: Since childhood, I have hated the fact that
machines are forcing us to learn to use them. I find
machines using us and not the other way round. I
see myself solving this to make sure machines do
the actual work, and we humans can start focusing
on explorations and discovering’s. Ultimately I
want to teach as many people as I can, all I know. I
see myself as retiring to become a professor and
inspire students to look beyond what they think is
possible.
IS: Share your views on the current tech-enabled
business scenario in India.
Rohan: India has not yet crossed the digitization
phase. We have a habit of skipping things. We
skipped landline telephony and jumped to
wireless/mobile. We skipped manufacturing and
jumped to services directly. We might also skip
building roads all together and adopt flying cars
(hoping this becomes true one day). I feel same
thing will happen w.r.t. tech in industry. We will
skip digitization phase, and directly adopt AI/ML
enabled machines and related technologies. But
this is a big concern. These modern technologies
will usher us in an age of productivity and low
costs but will also take away mundane, repetitive
jobs, and India is full of such jobs currently. We
are under-estimating the amount of re-training
which Indian workforce would need within next 5-
6 years.

Mr. Ayush Lohia
CEO
Lohia Auto Industries
30 September 2019|
33. Mr. Ayush Lohia – CEO,
Lohia Auto Industries
introduces us to his vision
of electronic cars in India and explains
the current market conditions that are
favouring the growth of electric
vehicles.
IS: What do you think is the future of
electric vehicles in India?
Answer: The future of EVs in fact
looks quite promising for electric cars,
electric bikes and e-rickshaws plying
on Indian roads with government’s
aims to make India a 100% electric
vehicle nation by 2030. These
machines not only help users save
money, but also promote a safe and
clean environment which is the biggest
health concern today.
Therefore future is electrifying as it
will reduce fossil fuel dependence and
pollution, and prove beneficial for both
consumers and the nation in the long
run.
IS: What are the driving factors for the
growth of Electric Vehicles in the
country? Where are we at present
compared to other countries?
Answer: The segments growth in the
Indian market is led by the growing
need to curb the air pollution levels
and the rising incentive schemes by the
government to support manufacturing
as well as use of electric two wheelers
and three wheeler. Moreover,
consistently increasing affordability of
electric two wheelers and three
wheeler vehicles is also boosting their
adoption across the country. Increasing
investments by electric vehicle
manufacturers to develop more
advanced, efficient and affordable
electric two wheeler and three wheeler
vehicle is likely to fuel growth in the
coming years.
Currently the market share of electric
cars is only 0.06 per cent when
compared to 2 per cent in China and 39
per cent in Norway as indicated by
Economic surgery. But there is a long
way to go considering the optimistic
environment for this sector. Electric
vehicles will soon be seen ruling on the
Indian roads
IS: What challenges do you face in this
niche industry in India?
Answer: Customers don’t foresee the
benefits of buying these electric
vehicles, due to lack of proper
infrastructure. And capital required to
create charging infrastructure
requirement to meet the demands of
mass market EV adoption is another
challenge. Hence, lack of infrastructure
poses big challenge as this leads to
poor consumer interest.
IS: Where do motorcycles fit in your
electric vehicles portfolio?
Answer: Lohia Auto is working on
new products development in which
we are working on new scooter
platform and new motor cycle
platform. So very soon we will be
launching our new product range
which will have both the segments.
IS: How do you plan to manage the
production, sales and distribution to
meet the government’s 100% electric
vehicles by 2030 target?
Answer: To increase its manufacturing
capacity, the company is planning to
set up a new state of art plant in one of
the states in southern and western
India. Moreover the new plant will also
boost the company’s presence, reduce
logistics time and cost. The new plant
will be equipped with the sector’s
latest technology.
IS: Do you have any plans to introduce
any exciting performance electric
motorcycles in India? If yes then
when?
Answer: Yes, we are hoping to
showcase some exciting performance
electric motorcycles but it is too
premature to discuss the same right
now. We are hoping to speed up, so
that we are able to roll out some
communication at the earliest possible.
IS: Which product has the highest
numbers/demand?
Answer: Two wheelers have the
highest demand
IS: Are these vehicles designed and
produced in India or with some partner
abroad?
Answer: At present the designing of
Electric Vehicles is done in India. But
we are exploring and looking for
ventures to design from outside.
IS: What is the capacity of your
existing facility in Kashipur,
Uttarakhand and will it require any
changes or expansion to fit into your
electric and clean fuel vehicle future?
Answer: Current capacity of existing
facility is over 100 thousand vehicles
per annum. The existing capacity does
not require any major change and
expansion to fit our existing portfolio
of electric vehicle and clean fuel
vehicle in future. Also as we
mentioned earlier, we are looking for
expansion by setting up a new plant in
south. With this we will be geared the
future growth and to meet demand.

38. PRIYA GEORGEHarnessing AI to Power Security Testing
ata is the new gold. The connected world generates
Dhuge volumes of data used by enterprises across
the globe. Given the sensitivity of the information
being procured and processed, it is essential that
information be kept safe and secure. As security technology
advances, cybercriminals are not lagging behind. Our data
is under constant threat.
Financial institutions, corporations and other organizations
are working to stop hacks, spending a large chunk of their
budgets on cybersecurity. They are faced with increasingly
complex issues, particularly as banks add new ways to
interact with their customers. Assisting them in their fight
against such security threats is Artificial Intelligence (AI),
Cybersecurity, and a FinTech company ‘NIMIS
Cybersecurity’. Their security testing, called ‘NIMIS’,
helps financial institutions and other enterprises conduct
security testing with the scale and accuracy required to
match the current threat environment.
A Transformative Leader
Priya George is the CEO and Co-founder of NIMIS
Cybersecurity, a Techstars backed company. Based in
Melbourne, Australia, Priya is a pioneer in machine
learning business applications. Prior to NIMIS, Priya was
the CEO of Necessary Security & National Cybersecurity
Institute; a security consulting company focused on security
architecture and evaluating emerging cybersecurity
technology solutions. However, cybersecurity wasn’t
Priya’s initial career choice. She started in business strategy,
consulting within M&A and significant enterprise-wide
transformations. Priya led significant transformation
projects in technology, organizational restructuring, and
people engagement. These large-scale projects were drawn
from industries such as mining, energy, water, financial
services, technology and government.
Her first entrepreneurial endeavour was a machine learning
and video software company that came out of two years of
technology research and development (R&D). She has
founded other innovative companies with her business
partner, Daniel Johns, Chief Technology Officer (CTO),
NIMIS Cybersecurity. He previously worked in Defence
Intelligence in Australia; at the National Security Agency in
the U.S.; and built AI systems for Defence companies.
Finding the calling
For Priya, the move to Cybersecurity was driven by her
intuitive understanding of complexity. She says, “I am
comfortable challenging status quo and this is one of my
strengths. Status quo is the way things are done, legacy
products, outdated values and systems. In my early twenties
I realised I am more suited and interested in the complex
matters, so my career showcases this with initially M&A
and transformation projects, then moving into technology
applications, and in the last 7 years Cybersecurity and
Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
She believes Cybersecurity is essentially a mission. A
mission to protect the data of companies, and thereby
protect them and their customers from financial loss and
harm. She is - advancing cybersecurity and serving
humanity at large.
More about NIMIS
NIMIS is a next-generation penetration testing platform that
uses advanced artificial intelligence. It enables enterprises
to conduct security testing with the scale and accuracy
required to match the current threat environment.
She understands that enterprises have reached a tipping
point whereby the increasing volume of security data can
no longer be handled effectively by available tools. To add
to this problem, there is a global shortage of cybersecurity
professionals. NIMIS is able to replicate tasks currently
completed by people, enhancing security teams in order to
36 September 2019|
39. increase security, and provide a cost reduction for clients.
NIMIS is built to match the speed and scale of technology
growth.
Priya and her team see Artificial Intelligence as the key to
web application security. This has a significant application
in banks, financial institutions, and any sector conducting
online transactions. She says, “The cybersecurity
community is increasingly turning to AI and machine
learning in its search to improve detection and response
capabilities to security threats.”
Seek, Learn, Cultivate
As a founder of multiple businesses, Priya advises the
entrepreneur to “start your business in an industry you
know a lot about, build a team and suppliers you trust and
who share your work ethic. Seek and learn from the best
mentors you can – who have experience doing what you
aim to do. Apart from that cultivate consistency, resilience
and patience in the face of challenges would be my advice
to budding entrepreneurs.”
Facing the Future
In November 2017 NIMIS completed Techstars Adelaide
Defense and Security accelerator and since then spent some
time in San Francisco. The company attracted mentors with
experience in building fast-growing technology companies
in the U.S. It is also speaking with a range of partners on
opportunities in Asia, particularly Singapore with its
increased focus on ‘virtual banking’. The complexity
involved means script-based solutions can’t stop the
breaches; AI has reached the capacity to solve the problem.
Priya is all positive when she says, “My team and I are
excited to be at the forefront of this exciting era, so we can
make a significant contribution to the security of our clients
and the community at large. We expect to expand into the
U.S. in 2020, with a foothold in New York as a global hub
in financial services.”
Although our product is
essentially technology;
the problem we are solving
is more about people -
protecting companies
and positively impacting
the lives of people

wills, the one who stands tall in all odds creates a
stigma that remains incomparable. The everlasting legacy
a person can leave behind derives from their laser focus
efforts and ability to do things differently. One such
extraordinary person, driven with passion and imparting
excellence throughout the country is Shivendra Kumar.
As the CEO and Co-founder of Chipmonk
Technologies Pvt. Ltd., Shivendra has made his mark in
the Tech-industry. Being an avid reader in technology
trends, his expertise in telecommunications makes him a
tech-evangelist and a true business leader. What makes
him suited to create innovative solutions for customers is
a very good mix of technology, delivery and extensive
sales experience. Shivendra is known for being a people
person and his drive makes him apt for building strong
and long-term relationships with the clients.
He was very interested in Math and Physics since
childhood. He hails from a village and that didn’t stop
him from attaining a rank of 2180 in IIT JEE. After
attending Bachelor’s in Geophysics in IIT Kharagpur for
two months, he changed his mind and opted to study
electronics and communications in NIT Warangal where
his interests lied. After graduation, he went on to work
with ABV and spent a brief stint. With a disappointing
experience he left ABV and joined Wipro for working on
AT&T class five switches. Shortly, he went to USA and
worked there for a certain amount of time. He also
worked on satellite communication system and optical
fiber network in Wipro after coming back from the US.

43. Shivendra’s wish to do something on his own was too
great and he wanted to build new IP’s from India. This
wish resulted in the birth of Chipmonk Technologies.
The Journey of Chipmonk
With the help of some of his colleagues, Shivendra
established the company in 2013. Now, he spearheads the
business by building, maintaining and executing
customer relationship. With a total of 14 employees, the
firm is headquartered in Bangaluru, Karnataka.
“We at Chipmonk, pride ourselves with cutting edge IOT
and AI solutions, by building a smart city, smart
appliances and Industrial IOT solutions,” says
Shivendra. Claiming to be big in IoT and AI Innovation,
Chipmonk has a partnership with the largest company in
India for deployment of the smart city solutions. It is also
partner to Swiss lighting company involved with
intelligent office lighting system. “We are expanding our
horizon, while developing AI solutions for a UK-based
Company right now and growing simultaneously,” adds
Shivendra.
The company built its first industrial IoT product in
September 2015 which was for fault prediction and
condition base maintenance, built in analytics at that
time. Chipmonk’s main focus was on four different areas
namely smart city, smart things, industrial IoT and
artificial intelligence. Now, the complete attention has
been shifted towards AI and building predictive modeling
for smart appliances. It is also involved in energy saving
charge, energy forecasting with fault reports and drill-
down of fault reports along with prediction of faults.
The Up-hill Battle
With each passing day, India is witnessing tech-enabled
advancements like never before. Flooded with
noteworthy opportunities, running a tech start up in the
country is not an easy task. Investors like to invest in
E-commerce and other business yet for more practical
reasons; they avoid putting money in tech-based
industries. “The journey has been quite challenging,
sometimes raising funds has been a big challenge,”
claims Shivendra discussing the issues faced by him as a
tech-entrepreneur. One of the key issues encountered by
Shivendra was financial backing for the sustenance of the
company. The other problem was acquiring long term
customers in which the firm was quite successful. “But
we are still looking forward to acquiring few more long
customers,” tells Shivendra.
All The Way Up
“What drives me to work every day is to build great
solutions for customers,” informs Shivendra while
talking about the motivation behind his success. He
considers himself fortunate enough to imbibe excellence
as a culture and to deliver it in his workplace quite early
in the business. He took a lot of inspiration from his
grandfather who was a great doctor from BHU. His
grandfather received a lot of respect from all around and
this became the driving force for Shivendra to strive for
success. “I am married and have a beautiful daughter
named Tia. She obtains gold medals every year in Math
and Science Olympiad. I am very proud of her. I can see
she is carried on that consistency of excellence,” rejoices
Shivendra while telling this story.
Industry Dynamics with Sage Advice
According to Shivendra, last few years in India has been
kind of mixed as per the industry scenario. There have
been momentary challenges such as demonetization and
application of GST for medium and small businesses in
India. The environment MSME’s have been very difficult
and lots of small scale enterprises have closed down due
to this. There needs to be better environment for MSMEs,
particularly for startups.
For the next generation of entrepreneurs - Shivendra
establishes some ground rules by saying, “Be a tough
nut. Before you start your business, you have to be
technically capable and self-sufficient. Also, you have to
be legally and financially savvy so that no one can take
advantage of you. You have to be everything when you
are an entrepreneur. It is not easy and not for the faint-
hearted, definitely. But once you take up the journey go
full throttle, go all the way; be willing to give your 100%
and more. Then only you will see success.”

alignment. I work with employees at all levels to be
aligned on our companies' larger goals, and those goals
are broken down to a smaller scale to ensuring that they
remain engaged in day-to-day operations.” He lists
down a few important points that are helpful in the
successful alignment of company goals:
42 September 2019|
45. • Consistent Feedback to help keep employees to focus
on their performance. Feedback acts as a reminder to
keep employees from getting too caught up in their daily
tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture.
