28. As a second-generation entrepreneur, it was a matter
of great pride for Dr Rahul Mirchandani, the
Chairman and Managing Director of Aries Agro
Limited, to see how farmers across India had gained using
the Aries range of speciality crop nutrition solutions.
Both his parents used to take Dr Rahul with them to the
fields, and he accompanied them on business trips when, on
weekends and during vacations. Seeing their products being
used and the fields of Aries farmers full of bountiful
harvests showed Dr Rahul the impact their business had
created from an early age.
His higher education saw Dr Rahul specializing in the areas
of Business Management, Finance, Marketing and
Economics. This further deepened his understanding of the
world of work. Post his MBA in Australia, Dr Rahul joined
the business as a management trainee and worked his way
through various departments and functional areas. With no
fixed work desk or work cabin assigned till over six years
after he joined, most of his time was spent in the fields
across India, learning first-hand from farmers, dealers and
distributors. This was the most intense part of unlearning
and re-learning within the context of the complex and ever-
dynamic Indian agribusiness markets.
With his earliest experiences being roasted in the fields of
Punjab, with minimal technical knowledge, limited
linguistic skills and being unable to convince the discerning
rural customers, the best learning in Dr Rahul's early career
was to see how even the junior most salespeople were more
useful than he was – simply because of their perfect
understanding of market conditions and product benefits.
This made Dr Rahul spend the first half dozen years just
understanding every Agro-climatic zone, farmer attitudes
and rural consumer behaviour.
With every field experience, Dr Rahul became more
confident and aware of the ground realities, and with every
small change that he implemented for the benefit of the
teams, he became more accepted as a positive contributor to
the Aries family.
Dr Rahul shares, "The constant questions that I asked
myself were 'What have I achieved minus my surname?',
'What have I done which was never done before to create
incremental change for the company?', 'What did I do with
every blank sheet of paper that I had the privilege of
having?”
In an interview with CIOLook India, Dr Rahul told his
enthralling journey in the search for answers to the earlier
stated questions. The highlights of the interview are given
herein.
Dr Rahul, please tell us about the saga of your
entrepreneurship from the beginning.
Over the two and a half decades, one step at a time, I built
trust and credibility by attempting to build over 100
speciality agribusiness brands in ways never done before.
Innovative rural marketing was my calling, and 'shock and

30. awe' tactics became the Aries signatures. From India's first
loyalty programme for agribusiness to launching a mineral
product mined from the volcanoes of South America across
26 states in one single day…. From India's first rural flash
sale generating over two billion in orders in just 30 minutes
hosted at the iconic Bombay Stock exchange to getting
Aries farmers to pitch the company independently to
President Obama during his visit to India. We did
everything that no one else dreamt of doing!
Now with a presence in 26 states of India and six countries
globally and a manufacturing capacity of 1,50,000 MT
spread across our eight manufacturing units in India and
UAE, Aries has established its leadership in India's
speciality plant nutrition sector. Almost all of our 114
world-class brands are proudly Made in India, making
India's farmers 'Atmanirbhar since 1969'. Leading the Aries
team of 1200 highly skilled professionals at the forefront of
India's agribusiness sector has been a privilege. The
consistent growth is a firm testament of the world's best that
we deliver to India's farmers.
Over the past 15 years, beyond my business, I have also had
the opportunity to promote youth entrepreneurship as the
Founding Chairman of the Commonwealth Alliance of
Young Entrepreneurs (recognized as a best practice in the
Commonwealth of Nations) and being part of the founding
team for the G20 Young Entrepreneurs Alliance, hosting the
first Leadership Assembly in Delhi, leading to the signing
of the New Delhi Charter for the G20 YEA. I have also
created and led several verticals of the Confederation of
Indian Industry's Young Indians (Yi), including the National
Students' Network (Yuva), Yi Farmer network and CII
Industry Farmer Alliance, Yi Next Practices and Innovation
(as part of the India@75 Vision), Yi International as well as
Champions of Change (for Niti Aayog). I have also taught
and mentored over 1500 second and third-generation
entrepreneurs at the Centre for Entrepreneurship and
Family Business within two of India's top Business Schools
(NMIMS and SPJIMR).
What was your inspiration behind venturing into the
business arena?
My parents, Dr T B Mirchandani and Mrs Bala
Mirchandani, were the Founders of Aries. Both were
thought leaders and, in the 1960s, chose to leave their jobs
in multinational companies to build India's pioneering
speciality nutrition business. Their grit, passion, wisdom
and determination created today's Indian multinational.
Even today, the values and culture they instilled in the Aries
Family have been our true 'North Stars'. Known as the
Father of the micronutrient industry in India, my dad has
been the inspiration for many generations. With her
marketing savvy and intellect, my mom created the longest
and most successful of our flagship brands – Aries Agromin
and Chelamin. Over five decades, these remain India's most

My continuous travels into rural areas across every
conceivable part of India and meeting farmers using their
deep native intelligence to cultivate and feed a nation of

innovative solutions for specific problems they face in the
fields. Serving this most discerning set of rural buyers and

What were the initial challenges you had to surmount to
ensure Aries Agro Limited's success rate reached
greater heights?
Aries has grown its revenues 35 times since I took over the
organization's marketing function 23 years ago. We faced
many challenges along the way, the most crucial being
working capital management – with rural areas facing
weather uncertainty and expecting extended credit cycles
and a wide product line necessitating high inventory levels.
The slow and tedious process of demand creation for
speciality product concepts was also a high-cost choice that
we had to make constantly. However, the determination to
invest on demand creation for 100+ brands without
spending a single rupee on mass media campaigns has been
the cornerstone of Aries' success. We built trust from the
bottom up, from the farmers giving testimonials from their
fields. Not by high decibel campaigns and anonymous
media interventions. Though time-consuming, the
reputation and credibility of being known by the brands we
create have been invaluable.
What leadership skills, values, and qualities do you
think your clients admire in you and Aries Agro the
most?
I believe Aries is admired for being an organization with a
unique identity – a speciality plant nutrition company

As an experienced professional, what would you like to
advise the budding aspirants willing to enter the
business world?
India is the world's biggest opportunity, and Rural India is
the crucible of growth for the Indian economy. Since 1969,

made in India. Anyone wishing to enter the world of
business must realize that there is a demand for new
products and services in India that serve unique needs and
fit the specific habits of Indians. However, this is also the
world's most 'value seeking' market; hence, attaining cost

How do you envision Aries Agro's operations with the

Digital applications are used in all markets to train farmers

Aries Dealer locators, mobile coupons for farmers and AI-
enabled soil testing and product usage recommendations.
Aries is also the first to have received a DGCA license for
micronutrient application using drone sprays and has built

39. Being a successful entrepreneur requires a lot more
than fortune. Because fortune favours those who
pursue their dreams whatever may come their way.
They adapt to changing times by moulding themselves
accordingly.
They tenaciously follow up on their pursuit of seeking
excellence in anything and everything they do. Harshal
Dilwali’s entrepreneurial journey began at a very young age
before he became the Director and CEO of Clarissa
Resorts Private Limited. He is from a business-oriented
family, so he always had the ambition to become an
entrepreneur.
He was preparing for engineering and got admission to
some prestigious colleges in India before destiny had
something else for him. Suddenly his family business
drifted towards the hospitality sector (Hotels and Resorts)
and they opened their first resort in 2014 in Jim Corbett
National Park, Uttarakhand with the name Clarissa Resort.
To run that business in the future, Harshal had to give up
engineering and take up a Hotel Management course. He
gave competitive exams for IHMs and luckily got selected
in the most reputed college in Delhi NCR.
From there Harshal’s new life from becoming an engineer
to becoming an entrepreneur started. He graduated with a
bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Hotel Administration,
but the three years journey was not easy. He had to go
through lot many departments which were very new to him
and had no prior idea about it.
Harshal recollects, “The initial few months were tough for
me to cope with because it was a government institute and
had no similarity with my previous studies. But I never give
up and made it very clear that if I have to become a
successful Hotelier in the future, I need to excel in this
course.”
He topped his college throughout the year. During that time,
he used to practically implement things in the business that
he used to learn in college. That gave him tremendous
results and boosted his confidence.
Harshal started gaining more and more experience while
working and studying together. Over time in 2017, he lost
his biggest support, his grandfather. However, soon had
been appointed as the director of the company at the age of
19, becoming one of the youngest directors in Uttarakhand
in 2017.
The responsibility was huge and Harshal was very excited
to join the business as soon as he graduated. But the journey
doesn’t end there. His parents did not allow him to join the
business until he completed his master’s. That frustrated
him initially but started preparing for his master’s soon
after.
Harshal did MBA with Gold Medal in Marketing and
Entrepreneurship and also did specialization in Digital
Marketing from Finland, where he again topped and got
featured in many newspapers and interviewed by news
channels.
Soon after completing his master’s, Harshal was appointed
as the CEO of the company along with the Director’s
responsibility in the year 2020. But that was not it, the
storm came, and just after two months of his joining as the
full-time CEO of the company everyone was hit by the
pandemic, and the hospitality sector had to face a major
crunch.
That was when Harshal’s patience and persistence were
tested. He along with his team prepared the first web check-
in technology software for their resort and Clarissa became
one of the first resorts in India to provide web check-ins to
all its customers. This reduced the infection risk of COVID.
Harshal also moved ahead in digitalizing the whole
company by introducing more advanced technology and
software. This concept worked very well and was a big
success. Later by God’s grace, everything went well.
Harshal along with his parent’s support expanded their
business and opened two more Hotels in Goa in the year
2021 and Mukteshwar, Nainital, in the year 2022
respectively. Harshal says, “Now after almost 9-10 years in
this business as an entrepreneur, I feel very passionate and
motivated with my never give up attitude, and continue to
learn more skills.”
Clarissa Resorts has been featured in various newspapers,
magazines, and media sites. It has also been awarded the
Travel’s Choice Award back-to-back for the year 2020-
2021. Harshal adds, “Recently we also introduced our
flagship company Clarissa Residency offering our
customers high-end villas to have their second home.”
Apart from this Harshal always aspired to become a speaker
one day. In 2020 during the pandemic, he got the
opportunity to explore his skills more and he professionally
completed his certification courses in Public/Motivational
speaking and got featured on more than 500+ news media

Harshal is now a professional and certified

he has been Awarded as the Youngest Entrepreneur of the

was awarded twice as the Entrepreneur of the Year 2021-
2022 by Fanatixx India Awards.
In an interview with CIOLook India, Harshal spoke in detail
about his inspiration, the challenges he faced, and his plans
for Clarissa Resorts. Highlights of the interview are given
herein.
What was your inspiration behind venturing into the
business arena?
As people say there is always an inspiration behind every
venture, similarly, I also had many people whom I
considered my idols, my inspiration, and from whom I have
learned a lot in my life.
First would be my grandfather who has inspired me the
most and generated that trust and confidence in me to
become an entrepreneur like him. Next would be Mr. Rattan
Tata sir who inspires all youth with his simplicity and
achievement, Mr. Warren Buffet would be another
inspiration. They both taught me the true meaning of
Entrepreneur and how to become an entrepreneur.
But the most important people behind my inspiration were
my parents. Their constant efforts and pillar-like support
were true reasons behind my becoming an entrepreneur
today.
What were the initial challenges that you had to
surmount to ensure your enterprise’s success rate
reached greater heights?
Challenges are part of one’s life. I also faced many
challenges during my journey. Some challenges were
emotional and some were physical. The emotional
challenges were mostly because of the education and work.
I had to be mentally strong to take up a course that was
totally different and new for me.
Secondly after joining the company biggest challenge was
the age gap and experience between me and my employees.
I used to think in a dynamic and more advanced way as a
young generation but the staff used to think conventionally
and found it tough initially to adjust to each other’s
mindset. It took a lot of time for me to gain their trust in me
because I was younger and less experienced than them.
Also, getting them familiar with the new technologies
introduced. The last challenge was the societal pressure,
and criticism from relatives and friends, but my parents
stood next to me as a pillar. People never believed in me
and really had no hopes that I will ever be successful in the
future.

and most important never allow failure to be an option.
I possess a down-to-earth personality and follow a simple
lifestyle. I believe that the real reason behind any success is
one’s hard work, passion, and dedication to his work.
How do you envision Clarissa Resorts’ operations with
the emerging technologies and automated tools that are
revolutionizing the business world by enabling
innovations?
As I always say that this world has turned more dynamic
and technology upgradation is an integral part to sustain the
market. Clarissa is a highly technology-equipped firm right
from its PMS (Property Management Software) to its first
web check-in website. Clarissa Resorts became one of the
first to turn 100% digital during the pandemic time and
reduced as many touch points as it could.
We introduced QR codes for ordering the food. By just
scanning the QR code, the whole menu gets displayed on
our customers’ phones and they can order their desired food
and beverage.
Not only this, but they can also reserve their table in our
restaurant from anywhere. We offer our guest express
check-ins through our first web check-in website where
they fill in the information before the check-in and they do
not have to spend time at reception waiting for their rooms
to get allotted, their rooms are ready even before their
check-in. We also introduced QR codes for quick and swift
payments.

On 19th May 2020 we were recognized with a Startup India
Certificate. Startup India is an initiative of the Government
of India. The campaign was first announced by Indian
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his speech on 15
August 2015. The action plan of this initiative is focusing
on three areas: Simplification & Handholding, Funding
Support & Incentives, and Industry-Academia Partnership
& Incubation.
We were continuously rising. Then arrived the COVID
pandemic which destabilized the whole world along with
us. Like many others, I too lost my father who was the
founder of this company. It was a very tough time for me to
move forward. But I never lost my patience and remember-
ing his dream I have started again to carry forward his
legacy.
The COVID pandemic gave a boost to the tech industry.
Today, we have our three physical branches and we are
giving service all over India along with 10+ foreign
countries.
What was your inspiration behind venturing into the
business arena?
My father who was the founder of this company is my
biggest motivation since childhood. As already mentioned, I
never wanted to work for others. Also being from a small
town, I have faced many problems on which I kept working
and solved those problems easily.
Furthermore, I believe that business is something which is
not only for one but also for future generations. Thus, I
always wanted to establish a business that will be there for
my coming generations too.
What were the initial challenges that you had to
surmount to ensure your enterprise’s success rate
reached greater heights?
As a startup, there are many challenges but some of the
major ones were,
Building a team: because without a team, we cannot move
forward. And as per the current scenario, where daily
startups are opening and shutting down, it is quite challeng-
ing to convince employees to work in a startup, which is
something we can accomplish.
Establishing your brand: After building a team it is time to
establish yourself in the market and make your place where
there are many old and big brands. We are again emerging
as a trusted brand in the IT solutions place.
Managing finances: Running a business successfully is a
game of managing investments, expenses, costs, salaries,
payments, losses, and profits. This is where we as a
company shine, as our books are healthy and sound.

The most important thing our clients admire in us is that we
do not give a common solution to our clients. Rather, we
always try to understand clients' requirements and then give
