1. Read the following text and make a 120 words summary about it, make sure you
paraphrase the information and take into account punctuation, orthography,
syntax, formal language, coherence and cohesion. The conclusion of the
summary needs to express your opinion and make sure you use using certainty
adverbs. (5.0)
A POLLUTED WORLD
The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways
are water, land and air pollution. Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by
human activities. It can be harmful to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water
pollution occurs when wastes are discharged from waste water treatment plants. Other
SUGESTIONS FOR TAKING THE TEST
1. Respect the time of the test: 40min.
2. Avoid comments or judgments to say out loud.
3. Create a silent, reflexive and constructive space.
4. Avoid any type of fraud intention.
5. Do not go out of the classroom while taking the test.
6. Do not use your cellphone while presenting the test.
7. Read very carefully each question and statements.
8. You can use the dictionary to help.
9. You can only have on your desk a pencil, sharpener, eraser
and the test.

known causes are factory wastes or leaking
underground tanks. These can be chemical
substances that are toxic. The polluted water can
cause cholera and typhoid fever. Water pollution
has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people
daily.
Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often caused by human
activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of
land for planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds
of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Land pollution also
brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides.
Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous
materials are released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide
gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released
from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage to the
environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the long
term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease.

Create a 120 word summary about the reading using
adequate punctuation, orthography, syntax, formal
language, coherence and cohesion. Besides, a
conclusion of it where you need to express your
opinion using certainty adverbs.

Nature of the assessment: Is for being developed at the end of the first semester.
Purposes of the assessment
 To check students’ progress about their writing skill during the term.
 To collect information about student’s strengths and weaknesses in order to plan coming
lessons.
 To certify students’ achievement for the term report.
Stage in the teaching sequence: End of the first term.
Assessment task: Students will read an article about polluted world. Then they have to summarize in
a 120 word text the main ideas of the article, including their own opinions in the conclusion paragraph
of the summary.
Assessment process: A rubric for assessing punctuation, orthography, syntax, formal language,
coherence, cohesion and certainty adverbs.
Using the information: With the information gathered by the students’ performance the teacher will
be able to recognize students’ weaknesses and strengths towards writing and reading in order to plan
mini lessons to fix those problems. For example: that students’ write without following punctuation
marks which affects the understanding of their ideas. In addition, the teacher will grade the product as
the final grade of the term.
Feedback: Furthermore the ongoing feedback in the term the teacher will provide individualized
suggestions, comments and strategies to overcome the weaknesses and remark the strengths.

The conclusion of the summary needs to express your opinion and make sure you use using certainty adverbs. (5.0) A POLLUTED WORLD The environment has been polluted in many different ways. The three major ways are water, land and air pollution. Water pollution is the contamination of lakes, caused by human activities. It can be harmful to organisms and plants which live in the water. Water pollution occurs when wastes are discharged from waste water treatment plants. Other SUGESTIONS FOR TAKING THE TEST 1. Respect the time of the test: 40min. 2. Avoid comments or judgments to say out loud. 3. Create a silent, reflexive and constructive space. 4. Avoid any type of fraud intention. 5. Do not go out of the classroom while taking the test. 6. Water pollution has led to the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily. Land pollution is the destruction of the earth’s land surfaces. It is often caused by human activities such as careless disposal of wastes, over-mining of minerals and wrong use of land for planting. All these will affect our health in the long run. They will lead to all kinds of diseases such as cancer, heart disease and breathing problems. Land pollution also brings about natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides. Air pollution is also the result of human activity where chemicals and other dangerous materials are released into the air. This happens through the release of carbon monoxide gas from exhaust pipes of motor vehicles. Other gases such as sulphur oxides are released from the burning of coal and oil. High air pollution levels can cause damage to the environment. It also brings discomfort to humans and other living organisms. In the long term, air pollution can cause serious breathing problems, lung cancer and heart disease. Besides, a conclusion of it where you need to express your opinion using certainty adverbs. Nature of the assessment: Is for being developed at the end of the first semester. Purposes of the assessment  To check students’ progress about their writing skill during the term.  To collect information about student’s strengths and weaknesses in order to plan coming lessons.  To certify students’ achievement for the term report. Stage in the teaching sequence: End of the first term. Assessment task: Students will read an article about polluted world. Then they have to summarize in a 120 word text the main ideas of the article, including their own opinions in the conclusion paragraph of the summary. Assessment process: A rubric for assessing punctuation, orthography, syntax, formal language, coherence, cohesion and certainty adverbs. Using the information: With the information gathered by the students’ performance the teacher will be able to recognize students’ weaknesses and strengths towards writing and reading in order to plan mini lessons to fix those problems. For example: that students’ write without following punctuation marks which affects the understanding of their ideas. In addition, the teacher will grade the product as the final grade of the term. Feedback: Furthermore the ongoing feedback in the term the teacher will provide individualized suggestions, comments and strategies to overcome the weaknesses and remark the strengths. Uses the punctuation marks but the writing could get a little confused. Does not present any punctuation marks at all. ORTHOGRAPHY Most of the words are written correctly. Few words are not written in a correct way. The whole summary presents significant misspelling words. SYNTAX The structure of the tenses use are well use. The structure of the tenses use has mistakes but doesn’t affect comprehension. The summary presents lack of structure and it is not understandable. FORMAL LANGUAGE The whole summary is written using a formal language. Parts of the summary is written in a formal language. The summary presents lackof formal language,it is completely informal. COHERENCE & COHESION The ideas and the structure of the writing are connected and easy to comprehend. The ideas and the structure are well connected but comprehension could be affected. The writing presents lots of ideas that are not connected and it is difficult to comprehend. USE OF CERTAINTY ADVERBS Certainty adverbs are correctly used based in their meaning and structure. Certainty adverbs are correctly used but the structure of the sentence is not well developed The writing presents lack of certainty adverbs at all.
