Beyond the EU: DORA and NIS 2 Directive's Global Impact
ANIMAL FARM -GEORGE ORWELL
1. ANIMAL FARM - GEORGE ORWELL
A philosophy initiated by a pioneer redirects its course from the proposed ideology when the origin ceases
to exist. In this case, it happens to be the OLD MAJOR; an old wise pig. Staying by chance not by choice in
the setting of MANOR FARM; ‘the comrades of old major’ have accepted their lives to be no other way but
this, ruled and governed by man’s interests and luxuries. Mr Jones, the owner of MANOR FARM; exploits
these animals treating them ruthlessly up until one of them challenges and refuses to keep things the way
they were. He turns out to be the motivator for the herd inspiring them to change things around them;
convincing them about the fact that; to be born as an animal is not living a laborious life for the benefit of
human race. He infact states that “MAN IS THE ONLY CREATURE THAT CONSUMES WITHOUT PRODUCING.
REMOVE MAN FROM THE SCENE, AND THE ROOT CAUSEOF HUNGER AND OVERWORK IS ABOLISHED FOR
EVER”.
Few days later; after his death, the fellow beings continue living in the same scenario with the Major’s wise
words still ringing in the head, unaware of how to implement the revolt and when and why should it
happen if at all it has to. Anything that reaches its maximum level of tolerance backfires at the peak point,
No different are the animals who vouch for a REBELLION on being starved for the entire day by their self
centred master.
ANIMAL FARM as the name changes from manor farm is seen as the initial step of freeing the animals from
the shackles of humans. Being slightly more educated than the fellow beings, makes the pigs sit on the
position to decide the so called habitability for the rest of the farm. This scenario could very much draw a
parallel between animals and the way humans lead their life.
NAPOLEAN and SNOWBALL, obedient descendants of old major keep legacy maintained by taking the
lead and imparting reading and writing classes to the fellow beings. Characters that highlight several
2. behavioural aspects are the horses, dogs, cats, hens , sheeps and the fellow pigs .Boxer, the horse shows his
obedience by supporting every decision of those who happen to be the THEN masters; working hard
towards achieving their targets. Snowball, a pig, an innocent creative visionary who optimizes his wisdom
to give a futuristic vision to the animal farm. The cats who choose to be indifferent whatsoever goes on in
the commune. Active participants, the hens make their presence felt in every Sunday meet where
napoleon addresses commonly to all the animals. Jessie, the dog and clover, the horse looking forward to
every new step that takes them away from bondage of slavery. Mollie, the horse lures for the materialistic
things being bothered about her ribbon all through the while the storm goes on.
Squealer, a manipulative pig happens to join a yes in anything that napoleon says. Farm was getting
accustomed to the new face of change that started happening. By this time Jessie’s puppies, hen’s eggs,
the milk from cows starts disappearing where everyone is left baffled as to what exactly was happening. It
being a mystery; later unfolds that the pigs are whole and sole of the scam of things being misplaced.
Snowball proposed a windmill which could be made to operate a dynamo and supply the farm with
electrical power. This turned out to be a threat for him to stay in the farm later as napoleon did not
approve of his plan. Vouching for a voluntary vote system, the gang was to bifurcate into Snowball
followers and Napoleon followers. Napoleon strategically throws snowball out of the farm taking the
charge of the farm ruthlessly.
The novel also underlines the major principle of the mindset/herd mentality of - One leads and the others
blindly follow without the need to counter question the leader. ANIMALISM that primarily states the
commandment of ‘ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL’ and many such utopian slogans that ideally are formulated
for the well being of the fraternity ,is seen falling apart when rules are moulded for the personal gain and
hence community starts bearing the loss. Pigs start taking the charge exempting themselves from all the
commandments. Self centered vision of expanding the farm, they begin to have alliances with owners of
the neighbouring farms. Animals are misguided by napoleon in a way that they are made to doubt
snowball blindly for any thing that goes off the track in the farm. History repeats its course as there is still a
3. dominance and watch over animals as they are made to slog hard for the windmill night and day long.
They succumbed to the dictatorship Mr Jones earlier, and now he was replaced by the pig. An
authoritative shift is observed as they begin to live life after REBELLION. True sense of being a rebel is
experienced when they begin losing their fellow mates. Years pass by, pigs still remain pigs; with an
outsiders view animals are left in a position thinking this was not what they had set to achieve.
ANIMAL FARM is an inquisition to the self as it raises several issues about the society that one has been
staying in and chooses to stay in. It also throws light on the fact that one can never exist in detachment
from the society. Man’s deed impacts the society and society and city in turn affect the man. To bring
about reforms in the already existing scenario, one has to know the current society in totality so as to not fail
at the same point where the earlier system broke down. Animal farm views society through a larger as well
as focused lens showing the nuances of functioning of a commune, becoming unsuccessful, reaching the
peak and again going underground majorly due to the leader who envisions it.
It raises a deep introspection : How is it to be UN AWARE and HENCE not follow as opposed to CONSCIOUS
REBEL by knowledge, choise and ABSOLTE AWARENESS for a rule, religion, custom, vision, practice, law,
philosophy, belief, opinion, thought . . .
“TO BREAK THE RULE, KNOW THAT TO THE CORE FIRST, THEN SHALL THE REBELLION BE A WORTHY ONE IF NOT
A SUCCESSFUL ONE.”
