CERTA L2 Developing Study Skills
• Pop Art was a brash, young and fun art movement of the 1960's.
• Pop Art coincided with the globalization of Pop Music and youth culture.
• Pop Art included different styles of painting and sculpture but all had a common interest in mass-media, mass-production and mass-culture.
• Although Pop Art started in Britain, it is essentially an American movement.
• Pop art was strongly influence by the ideas of the Dada movement.
• Pop Art in America was a reaction against Abstract Expressionism.
• The art of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg is seen as a bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art.
• The artist who personifies Pop Art more than any other is Andy Warhol.
• Warhol's paintings of Marilyn Monroe are the most famous icons of Pop Art.
• Roy Lichtenstein developed an instantly recognizable style of Pop Art inspired by the American comic strip.
• Claes Oldenburg was the greatest sculptor of the Pop Art movement, creating many large scale public works.

This piece (created by Roy Lichtenstein) is a playful take on pop art, which appears to look like frames on a comic strip. This
design choice would appeal to a widespread audience, due to its relatable appearance of which the younger demographic will
also resonate with, as comic books tend to be a favorable entertainment medium within the younger community. Furthermore
the way in which the title is displayed within the piece itself, is another example of the creative freedom allowed when using
this art form, as it just fits so well with the action taking place, being a fighter plane blowing up. On top of that, the vibrant
colours used entice a large audience, with the bright reds and yellows being the main cause of attraction.

This particular art piece constructed by Sir peter Blake, shows off the variety of methods one can use to create a pop art piece.
It contrasts greatly from the previous piece by Roy Lichtenstein, in how all the pieces mould together to create a full and final
image. The artist has used real life images to make up this piece, whereas Lichtenstein has used actual painting utensils to
form a make believe scenario. This tells me that one doesn’t have to be particularly handy with a pencil or paint brush, but can
use more obscure methods to come out with a final piece.

• Nothing of the plan was massively altered or changed, I just looked
back on it every lesson as to make sure I was keeping on track, within
the allotted time scale.

• Whenever a mistake was made on Photoshop which turned one of
the pieces into a visual nightmare, all I had to do was press ‘command
Z’ which reverted the problem.

team and this benefited the project
• 1 I worked well alongside my partner when we had to pick out a selection
of books from the L2 library, of which helped us greatly deciding upon a
couple art pieces which influenced our creations.
• 2 when one of us wasn’t entirely sure about how particular tools and/or
editing techniques worked, we would both strive to help one another
achieve the ideal outcome.
• 3 we both transferred ideas to one another, as to improve on our creations.
Such as how certain things could be digitally altered, through colour or
texture to make our pieces just that little bit more impressive.

• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project
• I was struggling to fit two images together (specifically Donald
Trump’s head and Donald Duck’s bill), so Scott showed me how to
transform the head using the transform tool on Photoshop, as to
stretch his head to reach both ends of the bill.

• An interaction with a learning environment that allows students to
progress towards more expert performance.
• Through active engagement, both me and ben listened intently to one
another, as to take in criticism and praise for our work. Which in turn
improved our work overall, because we had made something to appeal to
others rather than just ourselves.

• You take your chosen books to the main desk in the library, give them
your lanyard id and they will stamp your book, giving you a week
before you have to renew it all over again.

• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK questionnaire
results in tutorial]:
• Highlight key information- as to differentiate the useful information from the less
than useful facts.
• Using computers- I can type up my work at a faster pace, plus I can research any
essential information using the internet.
• Asking questions in class- seeing as the tutor is head of the class, you would think
that they could answer any queries surrounding the topic at hand.
• Participating in activities- working with other people allows for all your ideas to
form together, which in turn means you don’t have to use all your brain power to
achieve a final singular idea.

• What makes it hard for you to study?
• I tend to procrastinate a lot, due to the countless technological
distractions surrounding my work space.
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
• Plan ahead of time to complete a certain amount of work in an
allotted space of time and then take a short break.
• Remove all distractions from sight and push through as much work as
mentally possible.
