AP World History
Essential Questions Assignments
Task: All advanced placement World History students will create a year long electronic portfolio.
For every period of study students will research each of the following essential questions and
compile their research and responses throughout the course. Students should focus of historical
thinking and argumentation while referencing primary and secondary sources. For each
essential question students should do the following:
A) Type a short historical argumentative paragraph responding to the question
B) Include or embed a primary or secondary source
a) Pictures, video, text, etc...
C) Use both content and disciplinary vocabulary
D) Type in complete sentences
Students may use the following to create their class portfolio
A) Create a wiki page using Haiku
B) Google Sites using their Lemont High School Google account
Period 1 Essential Questions (Due September 1st)
1.1​ ​Archeological evidence indicates that during the Paleolithic era, hunting­foraging bands of
humans gradually migrated from their origin in East Africa to Eurasia, Australia, and the
Americans, adapting their technology and cultures to new climate regions.
1.2​ ​Beginning about 10,000 years ago, the Neolithic Revolution led to the development of more
complex economic and social systems.
1.2.1​ ​Agriculture and pastoralism began to transform human societies.
1.3​ ​Core and foundational civilizations developed in a variety of geographical and
environmental setting where agriculture flourished, including Mesopotamia in the Tigris and
Euphrates River Valleys, Egypt in the Nile River Valley, Mohenjo­daro and Harappa in the Indus
River Valley, Shang in the Yellow River Valley, Olmec in Mesoamerica, and Chavin in Andean
South America.
1.3.1​ ​The first states emerged within core civilizations in Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley.
1.3.2​ ​Culture played a significant role in unifying states through laws, language, literature,
religion, myths and monumental art.
Period 2 Essential Questions (Due September 22nd)
2.1 Codifications and further developments of existing religious traditions provided a bond
among people and an ethical code to live by.
2.1.2 New belief systems and cultural traditions emerged and spread, often asserting universal
truths.
2.1.3 Belief systems generally reinforced existing social structures while also offering new roles
and status to some men and women. For example, Confucianism emphasized filial piety, and
some Buddhists and Christians practiced a monastic life.
2.1.4 Other religious and cultural traditions, including shamanism, animism, and ancestor
veneration, persisted
2.2.1 The number and size of key states and empires grew dramatically as rulers imposed
political unity on areas where previously there had been competing states.
2.2.2 Empire and states developed new techniques of imperial administration based in part, on
the success of earlier political forms.
2.2.3 Unique social and economic dimensions developed in imperial societies in Afro­Eurasia
and the Americas.
2.2.4 The Roman, Han, Persian, Mauryan, and Gupta empires encountered political, cultural,
and administrative difficulties that they could not manage, which eventually led to their decline,
collapse and transformation into successor empires or states.
2.3.1 Land and water routes became the basis for interregional trade, communication, and
exchange networks in the Eastern Hemisphere.
2.3.2 New technologies facilitated long­distance communication and exchange.
2.3.3 Alongside the trade in goods, the exchange of people, technology, religious and cultural
beliefs, food crops, domesticated animals, and disease pathogens developed across extensive
networks of communication and exchange.
Period 3 Essential Questions (Due October 31st)
3.1.1 Improved transportation technologies and commercial practices led to an increased
volume of trade, and expanded the geographical range of existing and newly active trade
networks.
3.1.2 The movement of peoples caused environmental and linguistic effects.
3.1.3 Cross­cultural exchanges were fostered by the intensification of existing, or the creation of
new, networks of trade and communication.
3.1.4 There was continued diffusion of crops and pathogens, including epidemic diseases like
the bubonic plague, throughout the Eastern Hemisphere along the trade routes.
3.2.1 Empires collapsed and were reconstituted, in some regions new state forms emerged.
3.2.2 Interregional contacts and conflicts between states and empires encouraged significant
technological and cultural transfers, including transfers between Tang China and the Abbasids,
transfers across the Mongol empires, transfers during the Crusades, and transfers during
Chines maritime activity led by Ming Admiral Zheng He.
3.3.1 Innovations stimulated agricultural and industrial production in many regions.
3.3.2 The fate of cities varied greatly, with periods of significant decline and periods of increased
urbanization buoyed by rising productivity and expanding trade networks.
3.3.3 Despite significant continuities in social structure and in the methods of production, there
were also some important changes in labor management and in the effect religious conversion
on gender relations and family life.
Period 4 Essential Questions (December 9th)
4.1.1 In the context of the new global circulation of goods, there was an intensification of all
existing regional patterns of trade that brought prosperity and economic disruption to the
merchants and governments in the trading regions of the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, Sahara,
and overland Eurasia.
4.1.2 European technological developments in cartography and navigation built on previous
knowledge developed in the Classical, Islamic, and Asian worlds, and included the production of
new tools, innovations in ship designs and an improved understanding of global wind and
currents patterns – all of which made transoceanic travel and trade possible.
4.1.3 Remarkable new transoceanic maritime reconnaissance occurred in this period.
4.1.4 The new global circulation of goods was facilitated by royal­chartered European monopoly
companies that took silver from Spanish colonies in the Americans to purchase Asian goods for
the Atlantic markets. Regional markets continued to flourish in Afro­Eurasia by using
established commercial practices and new transoceanic shipping services developed by
European merchants.
4.1.5 The new connections between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres resulted in the
Columbian Exchange.
4.1.6 The increase in interactions between newly connected hemispheres and intensification of
connections within hemispheres expanded the spread and reform of existing religions and
created syncretic belief systems and practices.
4.1.7 As merchants’ profits increased and governments collected more taxes, funding for the
visual and performing arts even for the popular audiences, increased along with an expansion of
literacy.
4.2.1 Beginning in the 14​th​
century, there was a decrease in mean temperatures, often referred
to as the Little Ice Age, around the world that lasted until the 19​th​
century, contributing to
changes in agricultural practices and the contraction of settlement in parts of the Northern
Hemisphere.
4.2.2 Traditional peasant agriculture increase and changed, plantations expanded, and demand
for labor increased. These changes both fed and responded to growing global demand for raw
materials and finished products.
4.2.3 As social and political elites changed, they also restructured ethnic, racial and gender
hierarchies.
4.3.1 Rulers used a variety of methods to legitimize and consolidate their power.
4.3.2 Imperial expansion relied on the increased use of gunpowder, cannons, and armed trade
to establish large empires in both hemispheres.
4.3.3 Competition over trade routes, state rivalries, and local resistance all provided significant
challenges to state consolidation and expansion.
Period 5 Essential Questions (Due February 23)
5.1.1 Industrialization fundamentally changed how goods were produced.
5.1.2 New patterns of global trade and production developed and further integrated the global
economy as industrialists sought raw materials and new markets for the increasing amount and
array of goods produced in their factories.
5.1.3 To facilitate investments at all levels of industrial production, financiers developed and
expanded various financial institutions.
5.1.4 There were major developments in transportation and communication, including railroads,
steamships, telegraphs, and canals.
5.1.5 The development and spread of global capitalism led to a variety of responses.
5.1.6 The ways in which people organized themselves into societies also underwent significant
transformations in industrialized states due to the fundamental restructuring of the global
economy.
5.2.1 Industrializing powers established transoceanic empires.
5.2.2 Imperialism influenced state formation and contraction around the world.
5.2.3 New racial ideologies, especially social Darwinism, facilitated and justified imperialism.
5.3.1 The rise and diffusion of Enlightenment thought that questioned established traditions in
all areas of life often preceded revolutions and rebellions against existing governments.
5.3.2 Beginning in the 18​th​
century, peoples around the world developed a new sense of
commonality based on language, religion, social customs, and territory. These newly imaged
national communities linked this identity with the borders of the state, while governments used
this idea to unite diverse populations.
5.3.3 Increasing discontent with imperial rule propelled reformist and revolutionary movements.
5.3.4 The global spread of European political and social thought and the increasing number of
rebellions stimulated new transnational ideologies and solidarities.
5.4.1 Migration in many cases was influenced by changes in demographics in both
industrialized and unindustrialized societies that presented challenges to existing patterns of
living.
5.4.2 Migrants relocated for a variety of reasons.
5.4.3 The large scale nature of migration, especially in the 19​th​
century, produced a variety of
consequences and reactions to the increasingly diverse societies on the part of migrants and
the existing populations.
Period 6 Essential Questions (Due April 7th)
6.1.1 Researchers made rapid advances in science that spread throughout the world, assisted
by the development of new technology.
6.1.2 During a period of unprecedented global population expansion, humans fundamentally
changed their relationship with the environment.
6.1.3 Disease, scientific innovations, and conflict led to demographic shifts.
6.2.1 Europe dominated the global political order at the beginning of the 20​th​
century, but both
land­based and transoceanic empires gave way to new states by the century’s end.
6.2.2 Emerging ideologies of anti­imperialism contributed to the dissolution of empires and the
restructuring of states.
6.2.3 Political changes were accompanied by major demographic and social consequences.
6.2.4 Military conflicts occurred on an unprecedented global scale.
6.2.5 Although conflict dominated much of the 20​th​
century, many individuals and groups –
including states – opposed the trend. Some individuals and groups, however, intensified the
conflicts.
6.3.1 States responded in a variety of ways to the economic challenges of the 20​th​
century.
6.3.2 States, communities, and individuals became increasingly interdependent, a process
facilitated by the growth of institutions of global governance.
6.3.3 People conceptualized society and culture in new ways; rights­based discourses
challenged old assumptions about race, class, gender, and religion. In much of the world,
access to education, as well as participation in new political and professional roles, became
more inclusive in terms of race, class and gender.
6.3.4 Popular and consumer culture became more global.

  • 1. AP World History Essential Questions Assignments Task: All advanced placement World History students will create a year long electronic portfolio. For every period of study students will research each of the following essential questions and compile their research and responses throughout the course. Students should focus of historical thinking and argumentation while referencing primary and secondary sources. C) Use both content and disciplinary vocabulary D) Type in complete sentences Students may use the following to create their class portfolio A) Create a wiki page using Haiku B) Google Sites using their Lemont High School Google account Period 1 Essential Questions (Due September 1st) 1.1​ ​Archeological evidence indicates that during the Paleolithic era, hunting­foraging bands of humans gradually migrated from their origin in East Africa to Eurasia, Australia, and the Americans, adapting their technology and cultures to new climate regions. 1.2​ ​Beginning about 10,000 years ago, the Neolithic Revolution led to the development of more complex economic and social systems. 1.2.1​ ​Agriculture and pastoralism began to transform human societies. 1.3​ ​Core and foundational civilizations developed in a variety of geographical and environmental setting where agriculture flourished, including Mesopotamia in the Tigris and Euphrates River Valleys, Egypt in the Nile River Valley, Mohenjo­daro and Harappa in the Indus River Valley, Shang in the Yellow River Valley, Olmec in Mesoamerica, and Chavin in Andean South America. 1.3.1​ ​The first states emerged within core civilizations in Mesopotamia and the Nile Valley. 1.3.2​ ​Culture played a significant role in unifying states through laws, language, literature, religion, myths and monumental art. Period 2 Essential Questions (Due September 22nd) 2.1 Codifications and further developments of existing religious traditions provided a bond among people and an ethical code to live by. 2.1.2 New belief systems and cultural traditions emerged and spread, often asserting universal truths.

For example, Confucianism emphasized filial piety, and some Buddhists and Christians practiced a monastic life. 2.1.4 Other religious and cultural traditions, including shamanism, animism, and ancestor veneration, persisted 2.2.1 The number and size of key states and empires grew dramatically as rulers imposed political unity on areas where previously there had been competing states. 2.2.2 Empire and states developed new techniques of imperial administration based in part, on the success of earlier political forms. 2.2.3 Unique social and economic dimensions developed in imperial societies in Afro­Eurasia and the Americas. 2.2.4 The Roman, Han, Persian, Mauryan, and Gupta empires encountered political, cultural, and administrative difficulties that they could not manage, which eventually led to their decline, collapse and transformation into successor empires or states. 2.3.1 Land and water routes became the basis for interregional trade, communication, and exchange networks in the Eastern Hemisphere. 2.3.2 New technologies facilitated long­distance communication and exchange. 2.3.3 Alongside the trade in goods, the exchange of people, technology, religious and cultural beliefs, food crops, domesticated animals, and disease pathogens developed across extensive networks of communication and exchange. Period 3 Essential Questions (Due October 31st) 3.1.1 Improved transportation technologies and commercial practices led to an increased volume of trade, and expanded the geographical range of existing and newly active trade networks. 3.1.2 The movement of peoples caused environmental and linguistic effects. 3.1.3 Cross­cultural exchanges were fostered by the intensification of existing, or the creation of new, networks of trade and communication. 3.1.4 There was continued diffusion of crops and pathogens, including epidemic diseases like the bubonic plague, throughout the Eastern Hemisphere along the trade routes. 3.2.1 Empires collapsed and were reconstituted, in some regions new state forms emerged. 3.2.2 Interregional contacts and conflicts between states and empires encouraged significant technological and cultural transfers, including transfers between Tang China and the Abbasids, transfers across the Mongol empires, transfers during the Crusades, and transfers during Chines maritime activity led by Ming Admiral Zheng He. 3.3.1 Innovations stimulated agricultural and industrial production in many regions. 3.3.2 The fate of cities varied greatly, with periods of significant decline and periods of increased urbanization buoyed by rising productivity and expanding trade networks. 3.3.3 Despite significant continuities in social structure and in the methods of production, there were also some important changes in labor management and in the effect religious conversion on gender relations and family life.

Period 4 Essential Questions (December 9th) 4.1.1 In the context of the new global circulation of goods, there was an intensification of all existing regional patterns of trade that brought prosperity and economic disruption to the merchants and governments in the trading regions of the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, Sahara, and overland Eurasia. 4.1.2 European technological developments in cartography and navigation built on previous knowledge developed in the Classical, Islamic, and Asian worlds, and included the production of new tools, innovations in ship designs and an improved understanding of global wind and currents patterns – all of which made transoceanic travel and trade possible. 4.1.3 Remarkable new transoceanic maritime reconnaissance occurred in this period. 4.1.4 The new global circulation of goods was facilitated by royal­chartered European monopoly companies that took silver from Spanish colonies in the Americans to purchase Asian goods for the Atlantic markets. Regional markets continued to flourish in Afro­Eurasia by using established commercial practices and new transoceanic shipping services developed by European merchants. 4.1.5 The new connections between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres resulted in the Columbian Exchange. 4.1.6 The increase in interactions between newly connected hemispheres and intensification of connections within hemispheres expanded the spread and reform of existing religions and created syncretic belief systems and practices. 4.1.7 As merchants’ profits increased and governments collected more taxes, funding for the visual and performing arts even for the popular audiences, increased along with an expansion of literacy. 4.2.1 Beginning in the 14​th​ century, there was a decrease in mean temperatures, often referred to as the Little Ice Age, around the world that lasted until the 19​th​ century, contributing to changes in agricultural practices and the contraction of settlement in parts of the Northern Hemisphere. 4.2.2 Traditional peasant agriculture increase and changed, plantations expanded, and demand for labor increased. These changes both fed and responded to growing global demand for raw materials and finished products. 4.2.3 As social and political elites changed, they also restructured ethnic, racial and gender hierarchies. 4.3.1 Rulers used a variety of methods to legitimize and consolidate their power. 4.3.2 Imperial expansion relied on the increased use of gunpowder, cannons, and armed trade to establish large empires in both hemispheres. 4.3.3 Competition over trade routes, state rivalries, and local resistance all provided significant challenges to state consolidation and expansion. Period 5 Essential Questions (Due February 23) 5.1.1 Industrialization fundamentally changed how goods were produced.
  • 4. 5.1.2 New patterns of global trade and production developed and further integrated the global economy as industrialists sought raw materials and new markets for the increasing amount and array of goods produced in their factories. 5.1.3 To facilitate investments at all levels of industrial production, financiers developed and expanded various financial institutions. 5.1.4 There were major developments in transportation and communication, including railroads, steamships, telegraphs, and canals. 5.1.5 The development and spread of global capitalism led to a variety of responses. 5.1.6 The ways in which people organized themselves into societies also underwent significant transformations in industrialized states due to the fundamental restructuring of the global economy. 5.2.1 Industrializing powers established transoceanic empires. 5.2.2 Imperialism influenced state formation and contraction around the world. 5.2.3 New racial ideologies, especially social Darwinism, facilitated and justified imperialism. 5.3.1 The rise and diffusion of Enlightenment thought that questioned established traditions in all areas of life often preceded revolutions and rebellions against existing governments. 5.3.2 Beginning in the 18​th​ century, peoples around the world developed a new sense of commonality based on language, religion, social customs, and territory. These newly imaged national communities linked this identity with the borders of the state, while governments used this idea to unite diverse populations. 5.3.3 Increasing discontent with imperial rule propelled reformist and revolutionary movements. 5.3.4 The global spread of European political and social thought and the increasing number of rebellions stimulated new transnational ideologies and solidarities. 5.4.1 Migration in many cases was influenced by changes in demographics in both industrialized and unindustrialized societies that presented challenges to existing patterns of living. 5.4.2 Migrants relocated for a variety of reasons. 5.4.3 The large scale nature of migration, especially in the 19​th​ century, produced a variety of consequences and reactions to the increasingly diverse societies on the part of migrants and the existing populations. Period 6 Essential Questions (Due April 7th) 6.1.1 Researchers made rapid advances in science that spread throughout the world, assisted by the development of new technology. 6.1.2 During a period of unprecedented global population expansion, humans fundamentally changed their relationship with the environment. 6.1.3 Disease, scientific innovations, and conflict led to demographic shifts. 6.2.1 Europe dominated the global political order at the beginning of the 20​th​ century, but both land­based and transoceanic empires gave way to new states by the century’s end. 6.2.2 Emerging ideologies of anti­imperialism contributed to the dissolution of empires and the restructuring of states. 6.2.3 Political changes were accompanied by major demographic and social consequences.
  • 5. 6.2.4 Military conflicts occurred on an unprecedented global scale. 6.2.5 Although conflict dominated much of the 20​th​ century, many individuals and groups – including states – opposed the trend. Some individuals and groups, however, intensified the conflicts. 6.3.1 States responded in a variety of ways to the economic challenges of the 20​th​ century. 6.3.2 States, communities, and individuals became increasingly interdependent, a process facilitated by the growth of institutions of global governance. 6.3.3 People conceptualized society and culture in new ways; rights­based discourses challenged old assumptions about race, class, gender, and religion. In much of the world, access to education, as well as participation in new political and professional roles, became more inclusive in terms of race, class and gender. 6.3.4 Popular and consumer culture became more global.
