CONCEPT OF GENERATIONS OF WAR
William S. Lind
❑Concept or theory of generations of war 1980s.
❑Conservative right wing American writer &
analyst.
❑He writes for American defense and military.
❑He divided the wars in 4 generations.
GENERATIONS OF WARS
First Generation
❑ First-generation warfare refers to Ancient and Post-classical
battles.
❑First generation warfare" refers to battles fought with massed
manpower, using line and column tactics with uniformed soldiers
governed by the state.
❑ Treaty of Westphalia, thirty years war.
❑ Nation state system was introduced after this era because of thirty
years long war it was impossible for the small regions to fight
without state.
❑ The power to fight wars was given to states.
❑Example: English Civil War, Anglo Spanish War, American
Revolutionary War, Mexican War of Independence.
GENERATIONS OF WARS
Second Generation
❑Second generation warfare is the tactics of warfare used after the
invention of the riffled musket and breech loading and counting
through the development of machine gun and indirect fire.
❑Second generation war developed by French army in world war 1.
❑Mass fire power.
❑Centrally controlled fire power was introduced to control the
enemy.
❑Guns
❑Examples: American civil war, Boer war, World war 1, Spanish
civil war.
GENERATIONS OF WARS
Third Generation
❑Third generation warfare is a term created by the US military in 1989,
referring to the tactics of warfare used after the Wehrmacht’s
development of the Blitzkrieg.
❑Third generation was developed by Germans in world war 1 and world
war 2.
❑German army decentralized the concept and gave more importance to
speed, psychological and physical dislocation.
❑Tanks, helicopters, missiles.
❑Aircraft and motorized Infinitary.
❑More destruction.
❑Examples: World war 2, Korean War, Vietnam War, 2003 Invasion of
Iran.
GENERATIONS OF WARS
Fourth Generation
❑Fourth-generation warfare (4GW) is conflict characterized by a
blurring of the lines between war and politics, soldier and civilian.
❑William S. Lind, to describe warfare's return to
a decentralized form.
❑William s. Lind wrote in 1989 that the monopoly of states on war
will vanish again.
❑The equipment's tactics and trainings will be of no use.
5th GENERATION OF WAR
Concept was introduced
by David Axe in 2009 in
wire magazine.
❑American analyst.
❑Former Senior Advisor
to the President.
◦
WHAT IS 5TH GENERATION WAR?
❑War using media.
❑Soft war.
❑Non-conventional war.
❑New generation war.
❑It’s a conflict, war or battle of perception and information.
❑It is the war in which enemy changes the perception and perspective of the nation of it’s enemy.
When their perspective will change the nation will stop loving its country. This is what India is doing
in Pakistan.
❑Make people think what you want them to think.
❑To show manipulated and controlled view of the world.
Cont.
❑This war is a silent war that doesn’t seem like a war.
❑It’s a move from conventional to non-conventional war.
❑Your enemy act as your friend.
❑To wash the minds of the nation and set their perception according to yourself.
❑e.g. what India is doing with the youth of Pakistan.
❑India is using media to change the perception of people of Pakistan.
5TH GENERATION WAR ALSO INVOLVES
Psychological war
❑Making a nation depressed. The main reason is the sexual abuse ( child abuse, rape, harassment ).
❑Making people of a country hate themselves and their country.
❑Making people of any country psychologically weak.
Propaganda war
❑Facts are manipulated
❑Change the reality
Cont.
Cultural War
❑Changing is culture of a country.
E.g, People of Pakistan are influenced by the culture of west and India. Wedding and dowry
culture from India, cloths preferences from west.
Political War
❑Create an unrest environment in the country so that the government won’t be able to work
properly for the betterment of the country.
E.g, India and west are backing some groups in Pakistan that are causing political unrest
through protests etc.
Cont.
Economic War
❑To impose economic pain, make country economically weak. E.g, COVID-19
Cyber War
❑ The data is snatched.
❑Negative use of cyber space.
E.g, Many accounts are being operate by India or Israel to spread information against Islam and
Pakistan.
OBJECTIVES OF 5TH GENERATION WAR
❑Weaken enemy resistance without fighting.
❑Political unrest, protest, destruction, converting people of Pakistan against Pakistan.
❑Prevent enemy to pursue military objectives ( to involve enemy in many problems that they
forget to pursue their military objectives and their defense system gets weak).
❑Impose economic pain ( to make a country economically weak ).
❑Not letting your enemy survive.
Cont.
❑Spread anarchy (a state of disorder) among masses ( like fake news about polio vaccine that it
is causing health danger, this anarchy was spread by India).
❑Change public narrative ( to change the perspective of the people of your enemy).
❑Not immediate defeat but erode enemy morale ( kill your enemy slowly by defaming them in
front of the whole world and destroy them from roots).
TOOLS OF 5TH GENERATION WAR
❑Propaganda
❑Deception ( false or invalid )
❑Terrorist attack
❑Snatching data
❑Media campaign
❑Diplomate and conventional secret military support ( there are many groups in Pakistan that
are supported by west or India and these groups work against Pakistan.
Cont.
Irregular forces.
❑Insurgent groups, rebellion, Taliban.
❑It is the most important tool used in 5th generation war.
❑These organizations are not owned by the state.
Regular forces.
❑State owned organizations.
IMPACT OF 5TH GENERATION ON PAKISTAN
❑Destabilized Pakistan economy.
❑India is not letting Pakistan to be stabilized at international level.
❑Declare Pakistan as terrorist state.
❑India is spreading the image that the Pakistan is the safe heaven for terrorist and because of
that the image of Pakistan in front of whole world is getting weaker and weaker.
❑Defame Pakistan army.
❑E.g Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
❑Push Pakistan to isolation.
Cont.
❑India is trying to declare Pakistan as a terrorist state in front of the whole world so that the whole
world will isolate Pakistan.
❑After this there would be no foreign investment in Pakistan and Pakistan will go down in economy.
❑Create domestic unrest.
❑Such as stop polio campaign.
❑Trigger ethnic conflict.
❑Shia Sunni conflict.
❑Insurgent groups ( living in Pakistan and working against Pakistan ).
IMPACT ON PAKISTAN’S YOUTH
❑India pursue comprehensive plans through media warfare and create negative propaganda.
❑Trying to paralyze youth minds.
❑Creating their perception.
❑ Buildings their minds against their country.
❑Making youth of hate their government and army.
❑The main target of India is to remove the ideology of Pakistan from the minds of the youth
of Pakistan.
