1. INTRODUCTION : DEFINITION
● False ceilings are often secondary ceilings that are hung below
the main ceiling with the help of suspension cords or struts.
● These ceilings are crafted from a wide range of materials such
as POP (plaster of Paris), gypsum board, asbestos sheets,
particle board, aluminium panel, wood etc.
● They are also known as dropped ceiling or suspended ceiling
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

2. HISTORY
● Dropped ceilings and ceiling tiles were being used in
Japan for aesthetic reasons as early as the Muromachi
Period (1337 to 1573). Blackfriars Theater in London,
England, built in 1596, had dropped ceilings to aid
acoustics
Initially modern dropped ceilings were built using
interlocking tiles
and the only way to provide access for repair or
inspection of the area above the tiles was by starting
at the edge of the ceiling, or at a designated "key
tile"
●

2. HISTORY OF POP CEILING
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
● First used in the 1700s due to large quarry deposits of gypsum located
in Montmartre, a district of Paris, which was a leading center of plaster
● It is a mixture of calcined gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate), sand
and water
● plaster of Paris is when dry, it is still soft enough to be sanded and
carved.
● The use of finely ground gypsum plaster to create decorative molding
was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries.
5
3. PURPOSE OF FALSE CEILING
● To enhance the beauty of Room Interior
● To conceal electrical wires and cables
● To Manage height of too high ceiling
● To provide Sound and Thermal Insulation
● To install light and other fixtures
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
6
● Adds dimension without necessarily
overwhelming the space
● Available in a variety of colors, shapes, textures
and lighting options to draw the eye upwards
immediately
4 . Types of false ceiling Designs
Single-Layered false ceiling Multi-Layered false ceiling
● In larger rooms, a multi-layered ceiling becomes the focal point and
creates drama with the touch of grandeur
● If they are laid out touching the edges of the space volume, they are more
likely to make the space look wider by revealing its expanse
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
7
● Constructed completely out of POP, the elements
protrude out of a regular false ceiling or, by contrast,
are tucked into it
● Revolves around space geometry
4. Types of false ceiling Designs
Plus-Minus POP false ceiling Coffered false ceiling
● Coffers are sunken square or boxy panels that are flexed into a ceiling
● creates the illusion of higher ceiling height and multiple dimensions
within one room.

Gypsum false ceilings:
● Gypsum, a hydrated sulphate form of calcium, is one of the most
commonly used false ceiling materials.
● Gypsum false ceilings are pre-designed. Once the desired shape,
size, and design of the false ceiling are decided upon, it can easily
be installed.
● It sports a smooth, seamless finish and is known to absorb heat
and noise.
● Being lightweight, it can easily be hung from an iron board from
the original ceiling.
5. False Ceiling Material:

Plaster of Paris false ceilings
● Gypsum is heated to form Plaster of Paris (POP), which is then mixed with
water to form a paste.
● the POP false ceiling can be moulded into any shape, therefore, allowing
immense versatility to POP false ceiling designs.
POP is maintenance free and highly durable besides being good insulators
of cold and heat

Wood false ceilings
Wooden false ceilings
● Wooden false ceilings have excellent natural patterns and textures and are
most suited for cold climates
● Wooden panels can come in the form of hollow blocks, boards or panels.
● They are durable but are susceptible to termite attacks and warping.
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
10
Fibre false ceilings:
● Fibre false ceilings appear in the form of tiles. They are made of natural and
synthetic materials including wood, stone, tar, and other material.
● These false ceilings are strong, durable, budget-friendly, and resistant to
both heat and noise.
● Due to its ability to prevent heat and noise and low cost, false fibre ceilings
are usually used in commercial places and buildings.
Metal false ceilings:
● They comprise aluminium and galvanized iron due to their durability,
strength, and ability to absorb noise.
● Metal false ceilings are also available in different designs and shapes and are
easy to maintain.
● false metal ceilings are expensive in comparison to gypsum or POP false
ceilings.

Glass false ceilings:
● Owing to its transparency, false glass ceilings are enchanting.
● One can get beautiful floral designs can be carved on the glass or completely transparent
allowing an unrestricted view of the sky and surroundings.
● Their transparency can be used effectively to make small spaces look bigger
PVC false ceilings:
● PVC false ceilings are mostly installed in washrooms, kitchens, garages, and other places.
● They are lightweight, easy to maintain, and light on your pocket as well.
Fabric and synthetic leather false ceilings:
● Fabric and Synthetic leather false ceiling generally use a cloth or leather
● . These can be moulded and designed with ease. However, they are not meant for long
term use and are generally created for a specific occasion.
● They are prone to dust and damage.

6. Types of Grid False Ceiling
1. Exposed Grid
● these ceilings are easily identified by the fact that the
grid work supporting the tiles is exposed
● The exposed grid system is suspended from the soffits
using pre-tensioned suspension wire, rigid angle, rigid
hangers and threaded rod
● There are four main types of exposed grid systems:
1 Tee section
2 Linear slotted tees
3 ‘C’ profile main runner
4 Bandraster section
tee section C’ profile main runner / cross runner sections

6. Types of Grid False Ceiling
2. Concealed Grid
● With this type of ceiling, the grid work supporting the tiles or membrane is concealed and only
the ceiling tiles are visible
● The tiles or membranes can be metal, mineral wool, gypsum, calcium silicate, stone wool and
glass wool
● Mineral wool and gypsum-This type of ceiling employs a method of interlocking panels into
each other and the grid with the use of small strips of metal called 'splines'. Normally, these
type of ceilings will have a ‘key panel’ (usually in the corner) which can be removed, allowing
for the other panels to be slid out of the grid (a series of metal channels called 'Z bars') one by
one, until eventually removing the desired panel.
● Metal- The metal tiles can be either clipped into, hooked over or held in place with torsion
springs into the supporting grid work

6. Types of Grid False Ceiling
3. Semi-Concealed/Partially exposed grid ceiling
● Some systems are a mixture of concealed and exposed
grid, where part of the supporting framework can be
seen from the underside of the ceiling.
● Sometimes the tile forms the two long supporting
edges while some have additional sections that form
part of the system
● The tiles and panels can be manufactured from mineral
wool, stone wool, gypsum, metal and timber.

1. Beautiful Room :
False ceiling turns your ordinary room into extraordinary room.
It gives your room interior an elegant finish.
2. Control Room Temperature :
The best thing is thermal insulating features. It makes your home cooler
via thermal insulation properties and reduce excessive heat.
3. Mess free electric wire :
Another best thing is, it helps us to declutter our home by concealing electrical
wires and services. It reduces visual electric wire clutter.
4. Lower power cost :
It helps us to cut our electricity bills by reducing air conditioning loads.
11. Advantages Of False Ceiling
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
38
1.It may get claustrophobic
● Construction of a ceiling panel usually causes the height of ceilings to
decrease from 12 feet to 10 feet or lesser.
● Results in a more closed area with less space for air circulation
● Large space enabled better cross-ventilation.
● With air conditioners being widely used these days, the need for
cross-ventilation has decreased, which has made rooms less airy.
2.Overhead trouble
● Unprofessional false ceiling contractors poorly affect installations as
well.
● Poor construction and use of substandard material often cause a major
accident..
● Additionally, it is also difficult to check for leaks and cracks in the false
ceiling, which is why it is important to contact experienced false ceiling
contractors for installation.
12. Disadvantages of False Ceiling
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
39
3.Prone to natural calamities
● The false ceiling is not concrete ceilings like the traditional ones
● . They are crafted on ceiling panels, which are attached to the
main ceiling with screws and rods.
● During earthquakes, they may become unstable and even
collapse when the ground starts to shake
● . The installed fixtures on the ceiling might also loosen up and
move over time due to poor installation, which then eventually
break the false ceiling.
4.Plug in the gaps
● The hidden gaps in the false ceiling are often prone to
uninvited guests such as parasites, cockroaches, and other
fungal activity.
● If not maintained, the room may start stinging.
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
40
Maintenance
No special maintenance is required. For any dust accumulation it can be cleaned with broom or a smooth rug, just like other interiors
and avoid water contact.
Accessibility
Accessible ceilings consists of wood panels supported by a grid that allow you to take any panel out and put it in again as many
times as you want. This type of false ceiling is ideal for integrating accessories such as air vents, fire or safety sensors, lighting,
speakers, etc. and, while the same time, hiding other elements such as ventilation ducts, electrical or data wiring, pipes, etc.
13b. ACCESSIBILITY
13a. MAINTENANCE
GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Multiple factors are involved while calculating the cost of false ceiling per sq. ft. These include:
● Design: More complex the design of the false ceiling, the costlier it gets.
● Size: The price is low for a larger ceiling area as the materials required can be purchased at
wholesale prices in bulk.
● Quality: If you go for high-quality materials, it is pricier. But as high-quality materials are
durable, it has a higher return on investment (ROI).
● Availability: If the materials you are using are easily available in the market, transportation and
logistic costs can be cut.
● Additional cost: This includes the cost of finishes, fittings, cutting, lighting, accents etc.

  • 3. 1. INTRODUCTION : DEFINITION ● False ceilings are often secondary ceilings that are hung below the main ceiling with the help of suspension cords or struts. ● These ceilings are crafted from a wide range of materials such as POP (plaster of Paris), gypsum board, asbestos sheets, particle board, aluminium panel, wood etc. ● They are also known as dropped ceiling or suspended ceiling GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 3
  • 4. 2. HISTORY ● Dropped ceilings and ceiling tiles were being used in Japan for aesthetic reasons as early as the Muromachi Period (1337 to 1573). Blackfriars Theater in London, England, built in 1596, had dropped ceilings to aid acoustics Initially modern dropped ceilings were built using interlocking tiles and the only way to provide access for repair or inspection of the area above the tiles was by starting at the edge of the ceiling, or at a designated "key tile" ● GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 4
  • 5. 2. HISTORY OF POP CEILING GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ● First used in the 1700s due to large quarry deposits of gypsum located in Montmartre, a district of Paris, which was a leading center of plaster ● It is a mixture of calcined gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate), sand and water ● plaster of Paris is when dry, it is still soft enough to be sanded and carved. ● The use of finely ground gypsum plaster to create decorative molding was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries. 5
  • 6. 3. PURPOSE OF FALSE CEILING ● To enhance the beauty of Room Interior ● To conceal electrical wires and cables ● To Manage height of too high ceiling ● To provide Sound and Thermal Insulation ● To install light and other fixtures GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 6
  • 7. ● Adds dimension without necessarily overwhelming the space ● Available in a variety of colors, shapes, textures and lighting options to draw the eye upwards immediately 4 . Types of false ceiling Designs Single-Layered false ceiling Multi-Layered false ceiling ● In larger rooms, a multi-layered ceiling becomes the focal point and creates drama with the touch of grandeur ● If they are laid out touching the edges of the space volume, they are more likely to make the space look wider by revealing its expanse GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 7
  • 8. ● Constructed completely out of POP, the elements protrude out of a regular false ceiling or, by contrast, are tucked into it ● Revolves around space geometry 4. Types of false ceiling Designs Plus-Minus POP false ceiling Coffered false ceiling ● Coffers are sunken square or boxy panels that are flexed into a ceiling ● creates the illusion of higher ceiling height and multiple dimensions within one room. GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 8
  • 9. Gypsum false ceilings: ● Gypsum, a hydrated sulphate form of calcium, is one of the most commonly used false ceiling materials. ● Gypsum false ceilings are pre-designed. Once the desired shape, size, and design of the false ceiling are decided upon, it can easily be installed. ● It sports a smooth, seamless finish and is known to absorb heat and noise. ● Being lightweight, it can easily be hung from an iron board from the original ceiling. 5. False Ceiling Material: Gypsum false ceiling GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 9
  • 10. Plaster of Paris false ceilings ● Gypsum is heated to form Plaster of Paris (POP), which is then mixed with water to form a paste. ● the POP false ceiling can be moulded into any shape, therefore, allowing immense versatility to POP false ceiling designs. POP is maintenance free and highly durable besides being good insulators of cold and heat Plaster of Paris false ceiling Wood false ceilings Wooden false ceilings ● Wooden false ceilings have excellent natural patterns and textures and are most suited for cold climates ● Wooden panels can come in the form of hollow blocks, boards or panels. ● They are durable but are susceptible to termite attacks and warping. GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 10
  • 11. Fibre false ceilings: ● Fibre false ceilings appear in the form of tiles. They are made of natural and synthetic materials including wood, stone, tar, and other material. ● These false ceilings are strong, durable, budget-friendly, and resistant to both heat and noise. ● Due to its ability to prevent heat and noise and low cost, false fibre ceilings are usually used in commercial places and buildings. Metal false ceilings: ● They comprise aluminium and galvanized iron due to their durability, strength, and ability to absorb noise. ● Metal false ceilings are also available in different designs and shapes and are easy to maintain. ● false metal ceilings are expensive in comparison to gypsum or POP false ceilings. • 12. Glass false ceilings: ● Owing to its transparency, false glass ceilings are enchanting. ● One can get beautiful floral designs can be carved on the glass or completely transparent allowing an unrestricted view of the sky and surroundings. ● Their transparency can be used effectively to make small spaces look bigger PVC false ceilings: ● PVC false ceilings are mostly installed in washrooms, kitchens, garages, and other places. ● They are lightweight, easy to maintain, and light on your pocket as well. Fabric and synthetic leather false ceilings: ● Fabric and Synthetic leather false ceiling generally use a cloth or leather ● . These can be moulded and designed with ease. However, they are not meant for long term use and are generally created for a specific occasion. ● They are prone to dust and damage. • 14. 6. Types of Grid False Ceiling 1. Exposed Grid ● these ceilings are easily identified by the fact that the grid work supporting the tiles is exposed ● The exposed grid system is suspended from the soffits using pre-tensioned suspension wire, rigid angle, rigid hangers and threaded rod ● There are four main types of exposed grid systems: 1 Tee section 2 Linear slotted tees 3 ‘C’ profile main runner 4 Bandraster section tee section C’ profile main runner / cross runner sections linear slotted base a bandraster section with widths of 50-150mm GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 14
  • 15. 6. Types of Grid False Ceiling 2. Concealed Grid ● With this type of ceiling, the grid work supporting the tiles or membrane is concealed and only the ceiling tiles are visible ● The tiles or membranes can be metal, mineral wool, gypsum, calcium silicate, stone wool and glass wool ● Mineral wool and gypsum-This type of ceiling employs a method of interlocking panels into each other and the grid with the use of small strips of metal called 'splines'. Normally, these type of ceilings will have a ‘key panel’ (usually in the corner) which can be removed, allowing for the other panels to be slid out of the grid (a series of metal channels called 'Z bars') one by one, until eventually removing the desired panel. ● Metal- The metal tiles can be either clipped into, hooked over or held in place with torsion springs into the supporting grid work GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 15
  • 16. 6. Types of Grid False Ceiling 3. Semi-Concealed/Partially exposed grid ceiling ● Some systems are a mixture of concealed and exposed grid, where part of the supporting framework can be seen from the underside of the ceiling. ● Sometimes the tile forms the two long supporting edges while some have additional sections that form part of the system ● The tiles and panels can be manufactured from mineral wool, stone wool, gypsum, metal and timber. semi concealed grid partially exposed grid GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 16

  • 38. 1. Beautiful Room : False ceiling turns your ordinary room into extraordinary room. It gives your room interior an elegant finish. 2. Control Room Temperature : The best thing is thermal insulating features. It makes your home cooler via thermal insulation properties and reduce excessive heat. 3. Mess free electric wire : Another best thing is, it helps us to declutter our home by concealing electrical wires and services. It reduces visual electric wire clutter. 4. Lower power cost : It helps us to cut our electricity bills by reducing air conditioning loads. 11. Advantages Of False Ceiling GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 38
  • 39. 1.It may get claustrophobic ● Construction of a ceiling panel usually causes the height of ceilings to decrease from 12 feet to 10 feet or lesser. ● Results in a more closed area with less space for air circulation ● Large space enabled better cross-ventilation. ● With air conditioners being widely used these days, the need for cross-ventilation has decreased, which has made rooms less airy. 2.Overhead trouble ● Unprofessional false ceiling contractors poorly affect installations as well. ● Poor construction and use of substandard material often cause a major accident.. ● Additionally, it is also difficult to check for leaks and cracks in the false ceiling, which is why it is important to contact experienced false ceiling contractors for installation. 12. Disadvantages of False Ceiling GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 39
  • 40. 3.Prone to natural calamities ● The false ceiling is not concrete ceilings like the traditional ones ● . They are crafted on ceiling panels, which are attached to the main ceiling with screws and rods. ● During earthquakes, they may become unstable and even collapse when the ground starts to shake ● . The installed fixtures on the ceiling might also loosen up and move over time due to poor installation, which then eventually break the false ceiling. 4.Plug in the gaps ● The hidden gaps in the false ceiling are often prone to uninvited guests such as parasites, cockroaches, and other fungal activity. ● If not maintained, the room may start stinging. GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 40
  • 41. Maintenance No special maintenance is required. For any dust accumulation it can be cleaned with broom or a smooth rug, just like other interiors and avoid water contact. Accessibility Accessible ceilings consists of wood panels supported by a grid that allow you to take any panel out and put it in again as many times as you want. This type of false ceiling is ideal for integrating accessories such as air vents, fire or safety sensors, lighting, speakers, etc. and, while the same time, hiding other elements such as ventilation ducts, electrical or data wiring, pipes, etc. 13b. ACCESSIBILITY 13a. MAINTENANCE GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 41
  • 42. Multiple factors are involved while calculating the cost of false ceiling per sq. ft. These include: ● Design: More complex the design of the false ceiling, the costlier it gets. ● Size: The price is low for a larger ceiling area as the materials required can be purchased at wholesale prices in bulk. ● Quality: If you go for high-quality materials, it is pricier. But as high-quality materials are durable, it has a higher return on investment (ROI). ● Availability: If the materials you are using are easily available in the market, transportation and logistic costs can be cut. ● Additional cost: This includes the cost of finishes, fittings, cutting, lighting, accents etc. 14a. Cost Calculation GROUP 1 VISVESVARAYA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 42
