Sachit: Good evening everyone, my name is Sachit and along with my fellow teammates Ashmitha and Claudia, we are the Too Hot to Handle Group. This evening we will be discussing the physiology of overheating. We can’t wait to show you what we have planned so let’s get started
Sachit: I’m sure that everyone has been in a place where you have felt extremely uncomfortable with how hot it is. I know that I have. Atlanta is now perpetually hot all the time! For most of us, excessive heat is just a minor inconvenience. However, for individuals who have to work in environments where they are exposed to this level of heat on a chronic basis, there can be significant problems as you might imagine!
Heat stroke is when an individual’s body temperature rises extremely quickly in a short period of time to the point where they are unable to cool down. As a result, it can cause loss of consciousness, confusion, and extreme nausea/vomiting. It requires emergency treatment and if delayed can lead to further complications. Many of you have probably experienced heat exhaustion, but that is not the same thing as heat stroke! Heat exhaustion is losing severe amounts of water and electrolytes, due to the body’s attempt to rapidly cool itself off. Whereas, with heat stroke, an individual is unable to control their internal body temperature. So basically, a person is overheating, with no way to cool themselves off!
Sachit: The necessity for Heat stroke preventive clothing was especially depicted during the Covid - 19 Pandemic. Healthcare workers had to wear Personal Protective Equipment to protect themselves from getting infected. However, since PPE is so thick and has so many layers, it reduces the rate of heat outflow. As a consequence, 80% of workers said it impacted their job performance, and prolonged heat stress and exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. Thus, it becomes crucial to prevent heat-related illnesses, so that healthcare workers and other essential workers in society can perform their duties safely and efficiently.

We will now introduce the traditional beekeeping suit.
The typical beekeeping suit is comprised of three main components, a multi-layered net at the waist, a mesh head hat, and secured pant legs. The multi-layered net at the waist is designed to allow for proper air circulation and prevent overheating, while the mesh head hat provides ample ventilation and protection against bee stings. The secured pant legs prevent bees from entering the suit and causing harm to the wearer.

Next, we will introduce the Ultra Breeze suit, an alternative to the traditional which aids with further heat stroke prevention.
Heat strokes are prevented in beekeeping suits by using materials and designs that promote thermoregulation through the use of breathable fabrics, ventilation systems, and insulation materials. These designs help regulate body temperature, reduce heat exhaustion, and prevent the accumulation of sweat, thereby minimizing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Even so; however, these mechanisms can only do so much to prevent heat stroke. At some point, unfortunately, if an individual is exposed to extremely high temperatures for long enough, they run the risk of overheating in such a short period of time that their body cannot bring down their temperature. Because of this, action and steps still have to be taken to not only better prevent Heat stroke, but also address it and mitigate it when it gets out of control.

Researchers at Georgia Tech have been looking into ways to reduce the incidence of heat stroke (paramount figure). One thing that they have found is that with the creation of a sensor system, through the utilization of a cloud based sensor system, this can be accomplished. Trust me, this technology is way too much for me to understand! However, the gist is that they will be able to obtain information about changes in soldiers’ temperatures over significantly large distances. Too large of a heat increase in too short a time will still be a problem. Make no mistake! However, the hope is that if a rapid heat increase is detected before it becomes an extreme issue, a soldier can get the help that they need to prevent complications. This is especially true with the use of local networks, which should be able to tell a soldier whether there are any soldiers in close proximity to them that can assist them.

You might think that heat exhaustion and heat stroke are the same thing, but knowing the difference is very important. Heat exhaustion is losing severe amounts of water and electrolytes whereas heat stroke is when one is unable to control their internal body temperature
With this difference in mind, knowing how and when to treat it is crucial. If left untreated, it can lead to muscle, kidney, heart and even brain damage. All of this can eventually be fatal. In order to prevent heatstroke, one should be drinking enough fluids, looking out for health related problems with medications, sunscreen application and avoiding overworking in the heat.
