Pungency of chilli is due to : Capsicutin
3. IMPORTANCE :
Chillies widely used as vegetable and spice
Chilli is often cross pollinated crop
It is also known as hot pepper
4. BOTANY :
Often cross pollinated vegetable crop
The flower is protogynous
Anthesis in chilli occurs between 6.00 and 9.00 hr
Flower remains open for 2 to 3 days

6. Season : June – July , February – March and
September – October
Seed rate : seed requierd for one hectare is 500 g to 1
kg for variety
: for hybrid : 250 g seed per hectare
7. LAND REQUIREMENT :
There are no land requirement as of previous crops , but
the land should be free from volunteer plant .
Generally areas affected by wilt or root rot may be avoided .
Crop rotation must be followed to avoid endemic
solanaceous pests .
8. NURSERY :
Sow the seeds in raised nursery bed of 20 cm
height , in row of 5 cm gap and covered with sand .
8 to 10 nursery beds will be sufficient to
transplant one acre .
Apply 2 kg of DAP 10 days before pulling out of
seedling
9. TRANSPLANTING :
The seedling of 30 to 35 days old are ready
for transplanting .
Transplanting may be done on the ridges in
the evening .

13. MANURING :
Apply 50 tonnes of FYM /ha for irrigated crop .
Basal 0:70:70 kg of NPK .
50 kg N at 15 days after transplanting and 50kg N
at 45th days after transplanting
14. ROUGING :
Field inspection and roughing should be done for varities
and hybrid at different stage based on the plant height and its
stature ,flower colour and pod characters .
The plant affected with leaf blight , anthracnose and viral
diseases should be removed from the seed field .
15. PEST MANAGEMENT:
Chilli thrips : Scirtothrips dorsalis
• Inward curling of leaves is a typical symptoms .
White flies: Bemisia tabaci
• It is responsible for transmission of chilli mosaic
virus
16. • Both white flies and thrips can be
managed by spraying of any systemic
insecticides i .e. Acephate @1.0 ml /liter of
water
• Imidacloprid @ 0.5 ml /liter of water

19. HARVESTING AND
PROCESSING
Harvesting should be done in different picking .
1st and last one or two picking can be harvested for vegetable purpose .
The well ripened fruits with deep , red colour alone should be collected
in each picking .
The harvested pod are to be dried under shade for 1 to 2 days and then
under sun for another 2 to 3 days .
The seed are extracted from graded dried pods .
20. The seeds are cleaned by winnowing and dried to
10% moisture content over tarpaulin .
Then seeds arte processed with BSS 8 wiremess
screens .
SEED YIELD : 50 -80 Kg/ha
21. SEED CERTIFICATION:
Number of inspection: a minimum no. of 3 inspection shall be
made as follows :
I. The 1st inspection shall be made before flowering on order to
variety isolation .
II. The 2nd inspection shall be made during flowering to check
isolation , off type.
III. The 3rd inspection shall be made at maturity and prior to
harvesting .
