THE STATE OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN
SAUDI ARABIA
9. RATIONALE
• Nowadays most students are socially active by using social
media
• Little is known about the benefits .
• There is little research done in the developing countries.
• This study can be used as a foundation .
9
10. OBJECTIVES
To assess the pattern and extent/ frequency of
SM use among medical students.
To compare the male and female medical students use
of social media.
To identify the reasons/ perceptions for using
SM among medical school students.
To evaluate the impact of social media use on students
learning academic performance(GPA score).
10
11. METHODOLOGY
Study design:
Cross sectional descriptive study.
Study setting:
The study was conducted at King Saud University, College
of Medicine, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 2013-2014.
Sample size:
• A sample of 306 students (95% confidence level & 5%
margin of error)
• 400 students included (with expected non response rate
30%).
• All study years and two sexes. 11
12. 12
Sampling technique:
The excel program was used to randomly select the study
population.
Data collection methods:
• Data was collected by sending an an on-line
questionnaire to the randomly selected students through
(the survey monkey)
• The non-respondent students were approached to fill a
hard copy of the form.
Target population:
The medical students attending the College of Medicine at
the King Saud University
13. 13
Instrument:
A questionnaire was developed to collect data. The
questionnaire consisted of 35 items. It has two sections
• Basic characteristic of the study population.
• Types and patterns of SM use, reasons for SM use,
Perceptions about SM use and practice of SM use.
Pilot study:
Done on 20 students to test the logistics of data collection,
suitability of data collection tools, estimation of timing for
data collection.
14. DATA ANALYSIS PLAN
• Golden Survey Monkey plan was used for the data
analysis.
• Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages,
mean, and standard deviation were calculated.
• Comparisons were made between different categorical
variables using chi-square t-test.
14
15. RESULTS
Demographic
• 100% respond rate.
• 99% of students were
single
• The majority (65.3%) of
the students were in the
age group (20-22 years)
15
Total number of students= 400
19. MALE STUDENTS
19
• A statistically significant association between the male
sex and the usage of YouTube (p=0.003) and Facebook
(p=0.006).
20. FEMALE STUDENTS
20
• A statistically significant higher use of Instagram
(p=0.001), Path (p=0.001) and Twitter (p=0.04) among
female students compared to their male counterparts
21. THE SOCIAL MEDIA SITES THAT ARE
FREQUENTLY USED BY STUDENTS FOR
LEARNING PURPOSES
21
22. CHECKING SOCIAL MEDIA
The majority of students checked their social media on a
daily basis more than four times.
22
24. 24
• This study found that college students with lower
(GPA scores) use SM more frequently at lectures.
(p=0.04)
25. 25
PUT A CHART FOR THIS
• A larger proportion (71.9%)of the top-performing
students (GPA>4.5) than lower performing students
(66.1%) were checking their SM sites more than four
times per day, however, no significant association was
found.

‘Social media’ (SM) are tools that support conversation. “There is no single recognized definition of social media”[1]. Oxford Dictionary describes it as "websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking"[2]. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010) suggest, SM are “a group of internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content”. [3] Social media were basically arranged into different categories: collaborative projects: wikis such as Wikipedia, blogs; content communities for text (Bookcrossing), photographs (Flickr), videos (YouTube) and PowerPoint presentations (SlideShare); social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace; virtual game worlds such as World of Warcraft; and virtual social worlds such as Second Life [3].

However, there is little research done in this field in the Middle East and Arab countries.]. To date, the data is scarce on the extent to which medical students in the Kingdom use social networking sites and apps . Therefore, we typed these keywords Social Media AND learning AND (Middle East OR Saudi Arabia OR GCC OR Developing countries) using the Mesh function of the PubMed and found 102 results and none of them was relevant ot the study topic The results of this study could help towards the goal of informing the student community about the impact of SM on their learning, while providing an empirical insight into the emerging phenomenon of SM usage.
The widespread use of SM is potentially a cause for concern, particularly when attending to the gradually increasing time people spend online
Social media phenomenon is continuing to grow at a fast pace
Social networking is attracting the attention and interest of academicians and researchers all over the world. Little is known about the benefits of its use for specific purposes (e.g., learning, and/or student engagement).

Figure 1 shows that almost all the respondents use social media sites (98.0%). (Table2)
99.4% of the female students and 97% of the male students have a social media account (table3).
while (61%) reported that they are addict to it. (Table2)
Respondents were also asked to rank social media sites that are frequently used by students, overall results show that WhatsApp (87.8%) emerged as the favorite application for college students, followed by YouTube (60.8%), and twittwe(51%). Blogger.com (0.5%) was the least favorite.
The (Fig. 2) shows the distribution of responses. There was a statistically significant association between the male students and the frequent usage of social media in the following sites YouTube (p=0.003), and Facebook (p=0.006). Also, a statistically significant association was found in female students who used Instagram (p<0.001), Path (0.001) and Twitter (p=0.04). (Table3)
The social media sites that are frequently used by students for learning purposes were YouTube (83.5%), WhatsApp (35.5%), and Twitter (35.3%).
There was a significant association between female students and their usage of WhatsApp (p=0.001) and Google+ (p=0.02) for learning purposes. (Table3)

There was no statistically significant association between student’s checking their social media accounts while at lectures and (sex and study year)

I don’t think there is need for this slide and there is 2 pic whish one ?
Social media use is very popular among college students .
WhatsApp and YouTube emerged as the most popular websites among students in general as well as for learning purpose.
Students are using social media websites even during lectures , which is a cause of concern.
College students primarily use social media for entertainment and socializing.
Participation in online SMSs has a negative connection to student achievement reflected by their GPA.
Excessive social media usage, especially at lecture was found to be associated with their lower GPA score.
As its been a proved in this research students who’ve been distracted by SM during lecture have lower GPA due to that Students should be inform about the subsequences and maybe
A study skills course for students is needed to overcome the obstacles, and also it could help in the process of learning by educating students how to use social media as a study tool with an affective time management skills
To bridge the gap between faculty expertise and student needs, institutions should start faculty development programs and provide systematic support to develop and maintain their own fluency in information technology (FIT).
Universities and Colleges have to provide accounts in the most popular social media sites to support E-learning.
